for dinner some evening at Rudy’s Hideaway,
Lobsterhouse and Grill, on Folsom Boulevard
in Rancho Cordova, chances are excellent you
will run into Jean Payne. In fact, if you had
gone to Rudy’s anytime in the last three-anda-half decades it is likely you would have seen
the friendly British import.
“It will be 35 years in April,” the Citrus
Heights resident and career waitress said.
Long ago it was common to have the same job
for a working lifetime. In this era of job insecurity, 35-years of continuous employment is
a newsworthy span of time. Most people today
either leave the job for another one or—more
likely—their job leaves them.
“Too lazy to look for another job,” she said
with a chuckle.
Absolutely no one would describe Payne as
“lazy,” least of all her employer. She has been
at Rudy’s through two ownerships and three
managers, including the original owner, the
late Rupert “Rudy” Rudis, then his son, Rich,
and the current owner, Steve Ryan, who can’t
say enough good things about Jean.
“She’s always here early,” Ryan said. “If
we’re real busy, Jean never complains if she is
assigned extra tables.”
The admiration is mutual. Payne said she
and Steve have a great employee-employer
relationship.
“I could have retired years ago, but they
treat me good,” Payne said, traces of her
British accent still present.
She came to the U.S. as a nanny in 1962.
She stayed in that job for just two years and
has been in this country ever since. “I wanted
to travel,” Payne said. America is as far as she
got.
Her work at Rudy’s is hard sometimes, but it
is also recreational because of her relationship
with customers. “I enjoy the job. I go down to
socialize more than anything else.”
Ron Radford is also a long-time Rudy’s
waiter. “Eighteen year May First,” Ron said.
“It’s a pleasant place to work.” Most of the
other employees have also been there for a
long time, although Payne holds the record.
Especially unique when you realize that personnel turnover is estimated at 200-percent in
the food service industry.

- National Volunteer Week is
about inspiring, recognizing,
and encouraging people to seek
out imaginative ways to engage
in their communities.
Rancho Cordova has hundreds of volunteers that support
local businesses, nonprofit organizations, annual events, service
clubs, and more.
The City of Rancho Cordova
created a volunteer program in
2012 to give citizens another
opportunity to give back locally.
The program logged over 4,000
service hours last year, which is
the highest since the program was
formed.
This year, the City highlighted
its Volunteers in Neighborhood
Services (VINS) that formed in
2007 and has doubled in size the
past few years.
The volunteer group has
approximately 25 members and
help with City ribbon cuttings,
Council Meeting receptions,
Cordova Pride Program, community trash clean-up events,
residential feedback with City
ordinances and other community
service projects. Plus, they have
reported over 400 hours from
their group alone this past year!
The Rancho Cordova City
Council and City staff presented
a special plaque to the VINS this

MEMORIAL NOTICE
David Michael Dacy
October 16, 1957 to April 4, 2016
David Michael Dacy, 58, of
Rancho Cordova, CA, passed
away Monday, April 4th after an
8- year battle with Alzheimer’s.
David was born in Chico, CA on
October 16, 1957 to Michael and
Kay Dacy. David graduated from
Cordova High School of Rancho
Cordova in 1975. He married
Dawn Elizabeth Burnett on April
18, 1981. David took great pride
in his work at Home Depot,
Target Corporation, and his own
construction business. In his
spare time, David loved playing
softball, camping, hunting, trips
to Idaho, and doted on his fourlegged children, Abby Normal
and Charlie Brown. He loved
living by the river and taking his
dogs on long walks. David was a
true outdoorsman. David’s father,
Michael William Dacy, whom he
loved very much, predeceased
him in January 2000. David is
survived by his loving wife, Dawn
Dacy of Rancho Cordova, mother,
Kay Dacy and brothers Kevin
(Patty), John (Randee), Bob
(Beth) and numerous nephews,
nieces, great nephews and
great nieces. David’s greatest
achievements in life was adoring
his loving wife Dawn, being an
awesome big brother and son,
being a fun and crazy uncle,
being a constant friend, and his
incredible smile that could light
up a room. David loved life and
always rolled with whatever came
his way. Our family is grateful for
the love, support and care given
by so many, especially during the
last few years.
A celebration of Dave’s life
will be April 22 at 1:00 PM at
the Mather Sports Complex,
3755 Schriever Ave, Mather, CA
95655. We will celebrate David’s
life, have a meal, and hit some
balls out in the ball park. Dress
casual with your baseball attire
(preferably SF Giants), and bring
your bats and baseball gloves. In
lieu of flowers, Dawn asks you to
consider making a donation to the
UCSF Aging and Memory Center,
Aphasia Group (www.memory.
ucsf.edu and select DONATE).
war in Vietnam was a nightmare for most, but its memory
brought together veterans in
the Rancho Cordova City Hall
where they finally received the
“welcome home” not extended
to them during the conflict.
The City of Rancho Cordova
honored about 100 Vietnam
veterans at the April 4th
city council meeting. The
city became partners of the
United States Vietnam War
Commemoration program
launched in 2008 by an act of
Congress. The Commemoration
has honored Vietnam veterans
since 2012 and will continue
until Veterans Day 2025. The
Commemoration and its partners honor veterans who served
between 1955 to 1975, the
timeframe of the Vietnam War.
“It brought back a lot of emotions and I had a hard time
keeping it together up there,”
said Jerry Hayes, a United
States Air Force veteran who
served between 1969 and 1973.
Hayes, 64, said public sentiment toward veterans has
changed greatly since his tour
of duty. While he remained
stateside during his service,
he had run-ins with people
against the war. Once during
a seven hour flight layover he
considered changing out of his
uniform into civilian clothes to
prevent being targeted.
“I couldn’t believe how people were jeering at us as we got
off the plane,” he said.
He said his favorite memories from the war were his
down time, like watching
the sunset from the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge in Wash, while
he was stationed at McCord
Field Air Force base.
“The pressure cooker of the
war was enough to drive anyone insane,” he said.
The city currently has a

two year partnership with the
Commemoration, from 2015 to
2017. The partnership entails
two events per year must be
dedicated to Vietnam War veterans, said Stacy Delaney, an
Air Force veteran in the city
manager’s office.
“When Vietnam veterans
returned from the war — in
California or elsewhere — I
think they did not receive the
recognition they deserved,”
Delaney said. “What we were
hoping for with this event is to
say ‘welcome home.’ ”
A little more than 3,000
Vietnam veterans live in
Rancho Cordova, according
to U.S. Census estimates. In
Sacramento County there are
a total of about 90,000 veterans including those who served
during Vietnam, according to
CalVet.
City Councilman Robert
McGarvey, a former Vietnam
serviceman himself, presented each veteran with a
lapel pin designed by the
Commemoration. The pin features an eagle representing
courage, honor and dedicated
service and other recognizable
symbols on the front and the
message “A Grateful Nation
Thanks and Honors You” on
the back.
“I think the generation who
didn’t really honor veterans
and called them ‘baby killers’
kind of grew up,” McGarvey
said. “I think when we had
the Gulf War in ’91 people
started paying more attention
to veterans.”
McGarvey said he makes a
point to represent the needs
of veterans living in Rancho
Cordova through his position
on the city council. He served
in the Air Force between 1965
and 1967.
“It takes a while to get these
things done, but it’s worth it,”
he said.
Marilyn “Sue” Mellow, 70,
was another Air Force veteran honored at the meeting.
Mellow said the ceremony
made her proud to be a member of the Rancho Cordova
community, where she has
lived for the past 30 years.
“I thought it was an
extremely nice gesture,” she
said. “I’m very proud of that
pin and on Memorial Day,
Veterans Day and other special
occasions I’ll be wearing it.” H

Career Waitress Serves
Community for 35 Years
Great Career Training
Programs in Less
Than a Year
Jean Payne (at right) has been a waitress at Rudy’s Hideaway in Rancho Cordova for 35 years. Shown here with
customers (left to right) Marie Lovell, Sheila Golden, and Garrett Lovell.
Continued from page 1
Some of the regulars ask to be
seated in Payne’s service area.
“People seek her out,” Steve
Ryan said. “Same with Ron.”
Ron Radford has been a waiter at
Rudy’s for 18 years. “We know
people who don’t come in if Ron
isn’t here. Both are very good at
remembering customers’ names,
their kids, their parents, their
dogs.”
Steve Ryan was asked what
life would be like for him if Jean
and Ron suddenly left Rudy’s.
He looked as though he had been
struck by lightning and could not
immediately come up with the
words. When he did, it was clear
that such a loss would seriously
impact business.
Payne has served some of her
regulars scores of times over the
many years she has worked at
Rudy’s and has gotten to know
many of them very well. “I know
their grandchildren,” she said.
Before moving to northern
California all those years ago,
she held the same job in Laguna
Beach and in celebrity-packed
Newport Beach. Her customers there included John Wayne,
Rock Hudson, Rose Marie,
Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra,
and gravel-voiced actor Andy
Devine, about whom she says,
“he was such a nice man.”
Her husband, Robert, is also
retired. That is another reason
she continues to work. “We can’t
be home at the same time,” she
said with a laugh. “You wouldn’t
want to be together 24/seven.”
Don’t expect to find Jean
Payne at work on Sundays,
Mondays, or Thursdays. “Those
are my days off,” she said.
Even a career girl who loves
her job has to have some time

And Another Thing ...
Genius Is Often Just Perseverance
“Genius, that power
that dazzles mortal
eyes, is oft but perseverance in disguise.”
- Henry W. Austin
There are many things we
have been able to do here in
Rancho Cordova that seem
to surprise many people
because many of us were told
that we would never be successful as a city. But Henry
W. Austin’s phrase seems to
fit. Genius is often just perseverance, and the people of
Rancho Cordova know how
to persevere.
The money we spent on
Folsom Boulevard so far
is $20.5 million. There is
money from grants, Measure
A, gas tax, and many other
smaller sources, but look at
what we have accomplished
in the last 13 years. What
Folsom Boulevard looked
like when we began was a
completely different boulevard. Now, Phase 4 of the
plans for Folsom Boulevard
will be another $5.5 million. That will be a total of
$26 million. Some of the
plans will include sidewalks from Kilgore Road to
Sunrise Boulevard, and then
from Rod Beaudry Drive to
the Rancho Cordova Public
Library. The plans can be
found on our website at cityofranchocordova.org, and you
can also learn more by listening to this past Monday’s
City Council meeting.
Four of your Council members went to Washington
D.C. with the Cap-to-Cap
group from the six counties
that comprise the Sacramento
Region. It was the 46th time
they have been going to talk
to Congress Members and
our U.S. Senators to get their
support for the plans we
bring with us. I have talked
about that in the past, but you
do accomplish much more
when you talk to your elected
officials face-to-face and
bring the completed plans
with you to present to them.
That was how we received
Congressional support to
build the International Bridge
over the Folsom South Canal
to Sunrise Boulevard.
I was on the transportation team at Cap-to-Cap,
and we met Congresswoman
Doris Matsui in her office
and the Undersecretary of
Transportation to see what
we are doing to improve the
whole Sacramento Region. It
was a very good meeting, and
we accomplished our goals.
There is more that needs
to be done, but you have to
be willing to spend some of
your time to complete what
the cities and counties need.
And another thing that perhaps you may want to do is
to go to Washington D.C. and
see the beautiful history of
our country, if you haven’t
been able to do so. The monuments that have been there
for a long time, and the new
ones, are all worth seeing if
you can. I don’t know when
I will be going back to D.C.
but I hope it won’t be too
long because the history of
our country and what people
have done to save it is worth
experiencing.
F ro m C o u n c i l m a n B o b
McGarvey, God bless, and see
you next time.

50 Years to Life and for First-Degree
Murder and 15 Years to Life for
Second Degree Murder
CASE: Luther Frazier
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District
Attorney Kevin Greene, Homicide Unit
The Honorable Helena Gweon sentenced Luther Frazier to 50 years to life
in prison. On March 10, 2016, a jury
convicted Frazier of first-degree murder. The jury also found true a use of a
firearm allegation.
Frazier purchased heroin from the
victim, Shaun Blechinger, over several
months. After a while, Frazier allowed
the victim to use his car in exchange
for heroin. When the victim wrecked
Frazier’s car, he would not pay for the
damage. Frazier then stole his father’s
gun and went over to the victim’s residence to collect the money. The two
of them met outside in an alley, where
they exchanged words. When the victim was walking back to his apartment,
Frazier shot him six times, killing him.
CASE: Montrell Woods
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District
Attorney Kevin Greene, Homicide Unit
The Honorable Allen Sumner sentenced Montrell Woods to 40 years to
life in prison. On February 8, 2016, a
jury convicted Woods of second-degree
murder in the shooting death of Kenny
Hernandez. Woods was also convicted
of being a felon in possession of a
firearm.
On January 22, 2014, Mr. Hernandez
was helping family members move into
an apartment on Ethan Way when he
bumped into Woods. The two got into
an argument. Woods then pulled out a

CASE: Ernest Salmons
PROSECUTOR: Deputy District
Attorney Thomas Asker, Homicide Unit
The Honorable Ernest Sawtelle sentenced Ernest Salmons to 15 years to
life in prison. On March 8, 2016, a jury
convicted Salmons of second-degree
murder.
Salmons was cellmates with Edward
Larson at the Sacramento County
Jail. On December 14, 2014, Salmons
informed jail staff that Mr. Larson was
not moving. Mr. Larson was cold to
the touch and stiff. Medical personnel
responded immediately, but efforts to
revive Mr. Larson were futile. There
was no apparent evidence of a struggle
or blood in the cell. When the cell was
processed with a latent blood reagent,
significant blood traces were revealed,
including a large pool of blood on the
floor along the wall next to the bunk.
Blood collected and tested by the
District Attorney’s Crime Lab confirmed it was Mr. Larson’s blood.
The coroner concluded Mr. Larson
died from blunt force injuries inflicted
by an assault. Among other injuries,
Mr. Larson suffered lacerations to the
liver, and sustained nine broken ribs on
his right side and seven broken ribs on
his left side.
In an interview with detectives,
Salmons indicated he slapped Mr.
Larson twice with an open hand and
kicked him once. He stated Mr. Larson
hit his head a few times by his own
volition.

SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG)
- Conductor Donald Kendrick
and the SCSO plan to cap
their landmark 20th season on May 14th at 8 p.m. at
the Sacramento Community
Center Theater with a performance featuring three
contrasting choral orchestral
works by Haydn, Vaughan
Williams, and Dvoràk. But the
celebration doesn’t end there!
The evening will also serve as
a huge CD release party as the
SCSO plans to unveil its 9th
professionally mastered CD
— Carmina Burana II — at
this year-end performance.
Haydn’s Harmonimesse will
serve as the evening’s main
musical fare, complemented
by Vaughan Williams’ An
Oxford Elegy, and Dvoràk’s
Psalm 149 on the first half of
the concert.
“The Harmoniemesse
will bring back so many
warm memories as this was
the amazing work that we
featured during our first selffunded European tour to
Munich, Prague, Vienna,
and Budapest in 2004,” said
Conductor Donald Kendrick.
Four outstanding soloists and
narrator Phillip Rider will join
the SCSO Team on stage for
this performance.
“A post concert reception,
projected supertitle translations, and Don Kendrick’s
electric and educational
pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.
will enhance the evening’s
enjoyment for our concert
attendees,” added SCSO
Board Member Charlene
Black.
According to SCSO
President James McCormick,
“Our new CD is a live recording of our very well-received
Carmina Burana performance
on March 5th, 2016 at the
Community Center Theater.
We’re thrilled that the CD will
also showcase the American
première of English composer
Jonathan Dove’s Psalms for
Leo. The amazing 12-page
color CD insert promises to
add great value to the CD
itself.”

Cooley Pushes Legislation
to Reduce DUI Relapse
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
Assemblyman Ken Cooley’s
AB 2367 passed unanimously
out of the State Assembly’s
Public Safety Committee this
week. AB 2367 creates a statewide “24/7 Sobriety” program
designed to give counties who
wish to participate another
mechanism to address DUI
recidivism.
In California, forty percent
of all traffic-related fatalities involve alcohol—this is
higher than the rate nationwide.
Critically, nearly one-third
of those convicted for driving under the influence (DUI)
re-offend. More than half of
convicted impaired drivers continue to drive on a suspended
license and only a small fraction of DUI episodes result in
arrest. In an effort to add to
the toolkit of options available
to judges, this bill authorizes
a court to order a person convicted of multiple DUIs to
successfully complete a qualified “24/7 Sobriety” monitoring
program. 24/7 Sobriety programs require individuals
to abstain from alcohol for
normally 90-180 days and participants are subject to frequent
testing. If they test positive for
alcohol use, there are swift,
certain and modest sanctions—
typically a day or two in jail.
“This bill addresses the relationship between alcoholism
and repeat DUI offenses,”
said Assemblyman Cooley.
“24/7 sobriety programs have
demonstrated success at combating DUI recidivism rates and
California should invest in any
program that saves lives.”
24/7 Sobriety began as a
pilot program in South Dakota
in 2005 and required those
convicted of alcohol-related
offenses to take twice-a-day
breathalyzer tests or wear a
continuous alcohol monitoring
bracelet. It is now a statewide
program in South Dakota,
North Dakota and Montana,
with pilot programs in several
other states.
In addition, Congress recently
approved the Fixing America’s
Surface Transportation (FAST)
Act. Part of the FAST Act provides incentive grants for
states utilizing 24/7 sobriety
programs.
24/7 sobriety programs have
been widely studied by several organizations, including
the RAND Corporation, and
evidence strongly suggests
that the number of repeat driving under the influence arrests
and arrests for domestic violence are significantly reduced
in jurisdictions operating a 24/7
program.
“The 24/7 Sobriety Program
is a novel and promising
approach to combatting alcohol-involved crimes,” said
Gregory Midgette, a RAND
Corporation researcher who
testified about the program
Tuesday. “RAND’s research
has found that swift, certain and
modest sanctions can be a credible deterrent to drunk driving.”
Assembly Bill 2367 will
now head to the Assembly
Transportation Committee.
Assemblyman Ken Cooley
represents the 8th Assembly
District which includes the

Carmichael, Citrus Heights,
Rancho Cordova, Rancho
Murieta, Rosemont, Wilton and
other portions of unincorporated Sacramento County. For

those beautiful flowers. After
all, we survived winter and
we’re sick of gray and ready for
sunny colors.
A good rule of your green
thumb is Plan, Prepare,
Purchase,Plant. If you try to
prepare and plant at the same
time, you’ll poop out and then
those plants that you’ve taken
into your care face possible
death. Of course it’s not premeditated, but the plants will be
just as dead.
Death by good intention
Have you ever seen a honey
bee that’s got so much pollen
on her feet and thighs that she
can barely fly? I often wonder
if some of them never make it
back to their hives they’re so
overloaded; kind of like when
you’ve eaten way too much.
But like those bees, we can
get carried away buying more
than we can plant. We fly home
with our trunks full of flats of
flowers and the optimism we’ll
plant them all TODAY. But so
often we poop out in the middle
of the plant and the remaining purchase is at the mercy of
our next planting mood which
can easily result in death of the
remaining purchase.
Four Keys all start with a P
Key 1 Plan~
Divide your yard into zones.
When you divide up a project into manageable parts you
won’t get overwhelmed. Figure
out what you’d like to have
brighten each zone and write
down how many of each plant
you want. It’ll be like a grocery
list. Don’t plan another zone
until you’ve finished planting one you’ve planned. I like
to add at least one perennial
each year (those are the plants
that come back) in each of my
zones.
Key 2 Prepare~
Prepare the soil and even dig
the holes before you head to the
nursery. This is a crucial P!
Key 3 Purchase~
Take your list and limit what
you buy to the amount of holes

They nodded. Yes, by mutual
consent a worthy subject.
“With me,” Dud continued, “it
wasn’t so much my job as my
hobby. Writing that book.
I’m claiming it as the best part
of my job, anyway.”
The assembled were still waiting to read “Murder in the Soggy
Bottoms,” as it had yet to see
print, and was really a work in
progress.
“Of course I’m retired now,”
said Bert, “but when I was running the pawn shop, my favorite
part of the job happened when
a customer found something in
there he really needed and ended
up paying much less for it than
he thought he’d have to.”
“And you made more on it

too,” said Doc. Bert grinned and
nodded.
“Yep. That was good too.
Dewey?”
“The best part of the fertilizer
business,” Dewey said, “is seeing the difference it makes in
the flower gardens around town.
Maybe it’s just my imagination,
but I kinda like to take a little
credit for a prettier town.”
“You deserve it, Dewey,” Doc
said kindly. “Well, with me it’s
a little different. I have doctoring skills, of course, and it’s
good when I can help someone,
but these days the most satisfying part of my job is to check
someone out thoroughly and find
there’s absolutely nothing wrong
with them. Now that’s special.”
They looked at the tall cowboy, Steve.
“Digging postholes,” he said.
“What? That’s your favorite?”
“Sure,” and Steve grinned.
“That’s the only job a cowboy
ever has where he can start at the
top and work down.”

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
Twice in a week, the Cordova
High School baseball team was
involved in a one-run game.
In Tuesday’s Sierra Valley
Conference road game at Galt,
the Lancers had good pitching
and timely hitting that led to a
6-5 win over the Warriors. The
win keeps Cordova at 5-5 in the
SVC and 6-9-1 overall and still
in the hunt for one of the conference’s three playoff berths.
“It looks like it will come
down to who plays the best
in the final five games,” said
Cordova head coach Doug
Hughes.
On the mound, the Lancers’
Jarrett Harris went the distance;
The other one-run game took
place at the Lancers’ field on
April 14th.
The game was in the Lancers’
favor, 3-1, going into the top
of the sixth inning. The visiting Cougars scored a run but
Cordova hung on for the victory.
And pitching was also a factor as well. The Lancers’ Austin
Smith also went the distance,
striking out three Cougar batters,
walked none and gave up only
three hits.
Buck and Appino had two hits
each in the game. One of Buck’s
hits was a double, which plated
Appino in the bottom of the third
inning.
Yesterday, Thursday, Cordova
hosted Galt to complete their
home-and-home series.
Next Tuesday, the Lancers
host Liberty Ranch. Game time
is scheduled for 4 p.m. H
Wins Continue for Lady Lancers
By Mike Bush
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
Three wins in four games. That’s
what the Cordova High School
softball produced in seven days.
The one game that the Lady
Lancers didn’t win was on
Monday in a Sierra Valley
Conference contest. Playing at
Liberty Ranch, the hits were
there for Cordova (3-3 in the
SVC, 7-8 overall), but the Lady
Hawks pulled out an 8-3 win.
The game was tied 2-2 after
the first inning. But Liberty
Ranch (record) scored two more
runs in the second and three
more in the third frames for a
7-2 lead. Cordova scored its final
run in the top of the sixth.
Cordova finished with nine
hits in the game. Leading
the offense was Nikki Jones,
who went 2-for-4 with a double. Samantha Lutman also
went 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Traci Mahony also had an RBI.
Liberty Ranch had 10 hits.
“Liberty Ranch has our number (on Monday),” said Cordova
head coach Tracy Cole, whose
squad plays the Hawks again
this month.
Cordova 22, Galt 6
In an SVC game home game
on April 15th, the Lancers had
the Warriors’ number.
Cordova banged out 21 hits
in the game that was called
after five innings because of
the 10-run mercy rule. One of
those hits was a grand slam from
Mason Pittaro, who clubbed
her second home run against El
Dorado on April 11th.
Mahony and Joycelyn Brown
had four hits each for the
Lancers; Mahony had a double,
three singles and two RBIs while
Brown also had two RBIs. Sierra
Reyes joined the Lancers’ hitting circle by going 3-for-4 that
included a double and two RBIs.
Other Lancer hitters were
Samantha Lutman, Pittaro and
Kai’lee Cole with two hits each.

game in Sacramento on April
14th, the Lancers led 11-0 after
the first inning. The game was
called after five innings, also
because of the mercy rule.
Cordova had 25 hits.
Cordova 8, Rosemont 3
In an SVC home game
on April 13th, the visiting
Wolverines led 3-1 going into
the bottom of the fifth inning.
That’s when the Lancers’ offensive production took command.
Cordova, which scored its first
run in the first inning, plated
seven runs that led to the win.
“We batted our whole lineup,” said Cole of his team’s
attack in the fifth frame. “They
just let loose.”
The Lancers had only five
hits, plus took advantage of
four Rosemont errors to get the
win. Reyes, along with Cooper,
Brown, Mahony and Cain, had a
hit each for the Lancers.
On Wednesday, Cordova,
which was sitting alone in third
place in the SVC, hosted first
place Union Mine, which is
7-0. Today, Friday, the Lancers
will host El Dorado and next
Monday play at Rosemont. Both
games are scheduled to start at 4

like a broken record, but
the formula continues to
be a winning one for the
Folsom Lake College
(FLC) baseball team:
great pitching, good
defense, and timely hitting have propelled the
Falcons to a 6-0 record in
April.
A recent 12-1 rout of
Yuba College at Falcon
Field was the perfect
demonstration of why the Falcons are rolling. Starter
Josh Moore allowed just one unearned run on four
hits over seven innings. In his last three starts, Moore
has pitched 24 innings while allowing just one
earned run, an ERA of 0.37.
Meanwhile, the offense rapped out 19 hits, highlighted by a pair of three-run home runs. Catcher
Mason Allen went deep in the sixth inning giving the
Falcons a 9-1 lead, then designated hitter Kale Leach
went yard in the eighth inning to make it 12-1. Six
Falcon hitters got at least two hits a piece — Mike
Majeski and Tyler Kaim each had four — while five
Falcons had a least two RBI.
The win was the Falcons’ sixth straight — they’ve
yet to lose in April –— and 10th win in their last 12
games dating back to March 19th.
At 15-5, they’re currently two games behind Bay
Valley Conference leader Laney College and just
half a game behind second-place Los Medanos.
The remaining four games are all on the road,
beginning with Mendocino on Thursday before
playing at Contra Costa on Saturday.
Upcoming Sports Schedule:

Sat April 23rd: Baseball at Contra Costa,

OF
THE
There’s No Place Like Home
When you have been away for
a few days and you’re on that long
ride home but closing in on familiar
territory a certain feeling starts seeping into a temporarily vacated space.
The sensation gradually expands
as you take that usual turn off the
highway and work your way back
to the neighborhood. As you pull
into the driveway and shut the motor
down you feel it and maybe even say
it out loud, “It was great to get away,
but it’s so good to be back home.”
It’s good to be in that “happy
place” where you have settled down,
that place where you keep all of
your stuff and know exactly where
all of it is (most of it, anyway). You
know what you have in your own
refrigerator, except for a couple of
unrecognizable items that got shoved
to the back a couple of weeks ago.
It’s nice to relax in the backyard
for awhile or put your feet up in the
recliner in your cozy, homey living
room, and it is going to be so fine to
sleep in your own bed. You’re back
in your comfort zone.
Nobody in sports seems to have a
comfort zone quite like the Golden
State Warriors, unless it is the San
Antonio Spurs. As the relatively
ugly first round of the NBA Playoffs
progresses it is rather clear why
everybody has tabbed the Warriors
and Spurs as the favorites to meet in
the Western Conference Finals and
ultimately to be crowned champions:
Nobody can beat them on their home
floors unless they do it to each other.
The Warriors lost only twice at
home during the regular season, the
Spurs only once. The Spurs’ loss
came at the hands of the Warriors
in their penultimate home game of
the schedule. That 92-86 Golden
State victory, the Warriors’ first there
after 33 consecutive losses at San
Antonio (dating back to Feb. 14,
1997), snapped the Spurs’ 49-game
home win streak, the second-longest all-time. The longest all-time
belongs to the Warriors, also set this
year as both teams surpassed the
20-year-old mark of 44 straight set
by Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
Golden State’s 54-game Oracle
Arena streak was finally broken late
in the year by the Boston Celtics
and that pesky little Isaiah Thomas,
the former Sacramento Kings point
guard and “Pizza Guy.”
After their second home loss of
the year, surprisingly to the lowly
Minnesota Timberwolves, the
Warriors were faced with the task
of winning their final four games,
two of them against the Spurs, to
break the Bulls’ record of 72 victories in a season. The win at San
Antonio was No. 72 and the mission
was completed at home with a 125104 blowout over the injury-depleted
Memphis Grizzlies, before the usual
raucous crowd that has the reputation for creating the most dominating
home-court advantage in the NBA.
Golden State (73-9) and San
Antonio (67-15) are expected to
promptly dispose of their first-round
playoff opponents, Houston and
Memphis, respectively. But they
would not face each other until the
Western Conference Finals. The
Warriors would also have to get past
either Portland or the L. A. Clippers,
while the Spurs would have to beat
either Oklahoma City or Dallas.
The two teams last met in the
playoffs in 2013. That season the
Warriors had won both regular-season matchups in Oakland and took
Game 2 of the WC semi’s in San
Antonio. But the Spurs returned the
favor twice, winning Game 3 and the
decisive Game 6 at Oracle and eventually reached The Finals, but lost to
LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco
Giants must be quite happy to be
settling into their first extended
stay at home of the new season,
a 10-game stretch at AT&T Park,
after playing nine of their first thirteen games on the road, going 7-6.
In their only home series to that
point, the Giants took three of four
from the L. A. Dodgers. The Giants
returned home after losing two of
three in L. A.
It’s the Dodgers the Giants will
have to catch in the NL West. The
Dodgers have won three straight
division titles, but the Giants have
won three World Series titles in five
seasons, 2010, ’12 and ’14. The
Dodgers have not won a Series since
1988. So there.
The Giants went 47-34 at home
last year but finished second, eight
BY
GERRY SCHOLL
games behind L. A. In an effort
to return to the playoffs, SF has
remade its starting pitching rotation, adding free agents Johnny
Cueto and Jeff Samardzija to fill
in the No.2 and No. 3 slots behind
Madison Bumgarner. Cueto is off
to an impressive 3-0 start, while
Samardzija has been solid in his
three starts as the pair gets comfortable in their new home. They have
All Star catcher Buster Posey to help
them along with that.
It has often been suggested that
Posey’s wear-and-tear due to his
time donning the “tools of ignorance” should be reduced, thereby
possibly improving his offensive
production, by having him play
more games at first base. But as
one of the best defensive catchers
in the game today much of his value
revolves around managing the pitching staff. He insists he is a catcher
first and he is most at home behind
home plate.
Home, sweet home is where the
heart is.
But there is always some exception to any rule. Right now that is
the San Jose Sharks.
The Sharks, squaring off with the
L. A. Kings in the first round of the
Stanley Cup Playoffs, were the top
road team in the National Hockey
League this season. The Sharks finished 28-10-3 on the road, but only
18-20-3 at home after a 5-12 start at
SAP Center. The slow start could
partly be attributed to an early-season injury to star forward Logan
Couture, who missed thirty games in
all during the season.
Despite winning the first two
playoff games at L. A., the Sharks
must be wary of the Kings, for it has
been the Kings that have knocked
the Sharks out of the playoffs in San
Jose’s last two appearances. In 2013
and 2014, the Kings won sevengame series. In 2014, L. A. became
only the fourth team in NHL history
to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win a
series and in doing so outscored
the Sharks 18-5 over the final four
games. The Sharks may have to feel
a little more at home on home ice to
prevent something such as that from
happening again.
