Burnley recognises that businesses are the core
of the town’s regeneration and wealth creation,
that’s why Burnley Council actively supports local
business growth, and secures funding for new
schemes to encourage business growth and
attract new business to the town.

assisting business growth in Burnley, and creating
new business start-ups. This funding is set to
support, attract and create many more new
businesses over the next three years, generating
scores of new jobs for the borough.
All this activity is set to build on Burnley’s reputation
as a place to do business, offering a diverse
business base, attracting new business, generating
new entrepreneurs, creating a centre of education

Good council services, and improving the local
environment, are also a key priority to improve
business performance and create the right
environment for investment.
Cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods, investment
in infrastructure, and campaigning for better
transport links are just some of Burnley Council’s
key priorities, to improve our local area and the
image of the town, which in turn will enhance the
town’s investment potential.
We are developing strong links with our local
businesses to understand issues they are facing,
and through this joint working we are adapting our
communications and services to help them prosper.
The council’s business support services, provided
by the Regeneration & Economic Development

Calico Enterprise is the charitable arm of
Calico Housing Ltd and was established in
2007 to provide apprenticeships, job opportunities,
and support for local people.
So far, Calico Enterprise has developed more than
100 job opportunities. Our Building Foundations
programme trains around 50 people a year and finds
local apprenticeships for hardworking trainees.
Calico Enterprise projects are all designed to provide
support, training and personal development for the
community:
Building Foundations provides intensive training in
buildings, maintenance and construction skills, and a
long-term future for people who wouldn’t ordinarily be
accepted onto an apprenticeship programme.
Calico Interiors offers a value-for-money service to
the community whilst providing a groundwork for
apprenticeships and new careers.
Challenging young people to
make more of themselves
The Calico Partnership delivers floating support
services to more than 250 vulnerable people across
the region. Working alongside key partners, we assist
those people who need support to live independently.
“We want to contribute to the reinvention of Burnley as a
vibrant and prosperous town, with opportunities for all its
people. We are helping to build neighbourhoods people
want to live and thrive in – not just for today’s generation,

£10 million investment by UCLAN in a University
Centre as part of the overall £83m investment
which will also create a Sixth Form Centre and a
Skills and Adult Centre for Burnley College.

The new campus will create the most

incorporating a sixth form centre and
a separate skills and adult centre. For
the first time, the development will also
bring a university directly into Burnley,
as UCLAN will be a key third element of
the campus.
The new College is located on a 10acre site on Princess Way on the edge
of Burnley town centre, providing an
impressive presence on a key gateway
into Burnley. The campus will be easily
accessible by both bus and rail and
from the motorway network.

All of Burnley’s current secondary

Home Sweet Home
Whatever you imagine your ideal home
to be, Burnley will have it. Executive
homes, traditional cottages, converted
barns, modern bungalows, or large
garden fronted Victorian terrace houses.
New developments are underway to
replace the older housing stock and
houses are being built with the family in
mind, close to parks and schools.
You could own a four-bedroom
detached house in rural setting for
the price of a two-bedroom flat in
the South, with the advantage of
countryside on your doorstep and
stress free journeys to work.
City workers have discovered that
Burnley has plenty to offer when it
comes to buying a home and a good
lifestyle. Many have moved to Burnley
since the M65 was completed, which
links directly to the M6, making access
to Manchester and surround towns
much easier.

P ro u d h e r i t ag e
Burnley is a town rich in industrial
architecture, but whilst the town is
extremely proud of its industrial ‘cotton’
heritage, the perception of the area
as being one of mills has long been
inaccurate and a distorted reflection of
the vibrant modern town of today.
King Cotton
The second half of the 19th Century
saw Burnley’s development into the
most important cotton-weaving town in
the world.
In 1850 there were some 9,000 looms
in the town, all belonging to firms whose
main business was spinning. By 1900
Burnley had 79,000 looms, the majority
owned by firms engaged solely in
weaving.
One of the main reasons for this
change was the introduction of the new
technique of ring spinning in Oldham
during the 1880s. This made it cheaper
for Burnley manufacturers to buy yarn
rather than spin it themselves.
By 1886 it was claimed that Burnley
was producing a greater length of
cotton cloth than any other town in the
world. For more information on Burnley’s

Delivering Burnley’s Vision
The History of the House
Rosehill House Hotel was built in 1856, for wealthy cotton mill owner Adam Dugdale.
The house went through several changes of ownership, including the mayor of Burnley,
Mr Sam Taylor, and was also occupied by the home guard during the second world
war. Rosehill House was then converted into a hotel in 1963. Many of the elaborate
features of the original decor have been retained, including a number of beautifully
ornate ceilings, which give the hotel a unique charm and character.
The Restaurant
Inventive and creative, choose from our extensive range of modern English cuisine.
For that formal but intimate occasion it must be Dugdales, within the wood-panelled
dining room where quality is the hallmark. Our head chef offers the finest dishes from
the freshest ingredients, created with flair and imagination.
The Bedrooms
The Rosehill house welcome males you feel as though you are living in your own
country house, with all the facilities that implies. The hotel features 34 individuallydesigned bedrooms.
Each room has a character of its own and whether staying in the main house or the
splendidly restored coach house, there are fine antiques, exquisite soft furnishings
and yet all the modern-day facilities that you would expect from a first-class, familyrun, country house hotel. The rooms and suites combine today’s comforts with an
opportunity to feel the history that the rooms have experienced.
