Welcome to our bigger issue. We have more content to satisfy – bringing more on beauty via Beauty Box, our sister magazine.
This issue is LOADED! Not even bragging. It’s the issue of MORE.
Living is about aspirations. As we get older, there are things we want and work towards having and there are things we
would probably never get in our lifetime just simply because the opportunity to do so never arises. There are also some things
we
would acquire that for generations to come would remain a great investment because of its appreciating value.
Our cover girl, the beautiful Ajoke Ogunlaja is a wife, a mother of two as well as a career driven woman
with great determination. Ajoke, is part of a company that builds stylish and affordable homes for a living.
Speaking of beauty, we have included our sister magazine Beauty Box, from page 33, kicking off with
Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim in a swimsuit as the cover girl. Packed in Beauty Box are tutorials,
news, health, an interview with Yvonne ‘Vixen’ Ekwere on how she achieves her gorgeous red
carpet looks and more. The men haven’t been left out of this. Men, taking care of your body isn’t
just a metrosexual thing, INVEST in great skin from today. You would always look good for it plus
your women would thank you for it. With that in mind, check out BB MAN (page 40), with 8 steps
to Achieving a healthy looking skin and after shaves to buy before the year runs out at least.
There are many music artists in the Nigerian entertainment industry today but there aren’t a lot
with great staying power. With that in mind, we didn’t go too far. We implored the crown prince of
African R&B, the lovable Banky W(who is CF’s first cover star to appear twice – first appearance was
with media personality Adora Oleh in October 2010) in our ‘Bankable Investment’, who after over
10years in the business is still churning out hits and getting better like fine wine. Pick up Banky’s old
albums or look for songs like ‘My Regret’ or the newly released ‘Jaiye Ori Mi’ and you’ll agree with us
he is the perfect combination with our cover girl.
We love our interpretation of modern art in Complete Fashion extra, as we teamed up with furniture
artisan, Grant Quartermaine, and model extraordinaire Aisha Bello (Isis Model Agency) bringing
extra pizzazz to beautiful wooden structures in WOOD MOOD. Each piece in this collection was
lovingly made with extra special attention given to the curves, layers and design

series with a friend and after joining Ebony Life television

to Nigeria and getting a grip of how things work in the
country is a milestone she’s proud of achieving. “The
hardest things for me so far, is coming to Nigeria and
having to adapt to how things work here because you have
to adapt. Lagos would teach you that there’s a way to do
things and you should follow that way. The differences
in the culture, the differences in the way people work
professionally and the differences in the industry because
our entertainment and media industry here is different
from that of outside. And just trying to convince people
that there’s a different way to work, there is a different way
to be a presenter, you don’t have to be like everybody else,
you can be different, you don’t have to talk in a different
way, and your style can be different. That’s how I think I
come across to people because I’m not like everybody else.”
One of Zainab’s major markers this year, is being the
brand ambassador for the colossal Dark and Lovely brand.
Did she see this coming? “No I didn’t at all. Even when
I heard that L’Oreal and Dark & Lovely was in Nigeria, I
was like oh wow this is a big movement because for a huge
international brand such as L’Oreal to come to Nigeria it
means that there is potential here, it means that they value
what we have here and they want to be able to just add to
what we have. I didn’t see it coming but I can definitely
say that I appreciate being noticed because they could have
chosen anybody, so I appreciate the fact that they’ve seen
my work and they like my work and they think that I can
bring something to the brand. So I’m looking forward to
seeing what our partnership would be like. I’m looking
forward to inspiring other women to let them know that
the things that I have done to get me here could definitely
take them to the next step.”

Does she see a reflection of herself in the woman that
Dark and Lovely is trying to build? “Definitely! I see
myself in the spirit of the Dark and Lovely brand, there’s
something very homely and warm about Dark and Lovely,
it’s almost like it’s you and a friend, it’s definitely not very
intimidating because there are lots of brands out there that
show you pictures of women and you look at it and say,
‘this woman doesn’t look like me’ ‘I don’t feel that I can
be that woman’. Whereas when you look at a woman on
a Dark and Lovely brand you’re like, ‘yes this woman is
black and I can be that woman.’ So I definitely believe that
the brand is very aspirational and we can all reach that
potential and level.”
Focusing on an international brand needs a huge sense
of commitment and Zainab is all for it. “Right now, Dark
and Lovely is my focus but I’m definitely open to pushing
forward any cause that’s in line with what I believe in,
such as empowering women and inspiring the youth into
the creative market as well as making the media industry
a lot more polished and as professional as it can be. My
focus is being with helping the brand to make its mark in
the African market and helping women understand that
there is a Dark and Lovely woman inside of them.”
Like everyone else, Zainab has regrets but she doesn’t
dwell on them. “Everybody has regrets, you don’t ever
not have regrets. There are so many but I’m not going to
list them down but what I like to do is, I take the mistakes
that I make and try to learn from them as much as I can
even though sometimes I don’t want to. I’ve made a lot of
mistakes, I’ve made a lot of wrong decisions but the most
important thing for me is to move forward so, I never like
to sit in one place and think, oh gosh, I did this wrong. It’s
about pushing forward and moving to the next position in
life.”
Winging a career as big as hers, it’s hard to envision if she
maps out time for fun. “I’m actually very playful which
you can probably see on my show but I like to have fun.
I’m like an introvert-extrovert. I go through phases where
I’m very quiet and keep to myself and in my room, just
working and chilling out. And I have moments where I
just go out and have a good time. To have fun, I love to eat
so going out to eat is like super fun for me, I like to cook as
well and hang out with my friends. Going out to an event
and just chilling out or being in the beach too. I love being
in a bikini and being in the sun. If I could be paid to travel,
that’s what I’d do with myself.”
Zainab is famous for her lovely skin, piqued with the
curiosity to know her beauty regimen, I’m eager to jot
down. “My beauty regimen is actually very simple because
the skin on my face is a lot more sensitive to anywhere else
on my body, so I keep it very simple. I steam my face once
a week and I do the basic cleanse, toning and moisturizing.
I use a really simple cleanser with a wash pad and then I
steam my face. After that, I exfoliate and just get all the
dirt out and use a moisturizer. I don’t like to wear makeup when I’m not working so the most you’ll see me wear
if I’m outside and not working is my eyebrows done with
a bit of concealer. I let my skin breathe because I wear so
much make-up
at work. What might work on
me, might not
work on someone else so it’s a

Zainab reveals a smidgen of what Dark and Lovely has in

When Zainab Balogun confesses to the challenges she’s
faced on her quest to reach the top, it’s obvious that the
stunning TV presenter, has never taken ‘No’ for an answer.
“There’s been a few times which not only have I not gotten
a job because they envisioned it for a man or a particular
type of woman. Sometimes, I lose out on opportunities to
men and I lose out opportunities because I don’t look a
particular way, I’m not fairer than the next person, that’s
another reason why I’ve lost certain jobs but that does
not stop me. My brand and who I am are different and I
want to be able to let other people know that you can be
different and you can still work. So far I’ve been able to
appreciate the people that have given me the opportunity
to be who I am, to not necessarily tow the line and still be
able to work just as well as the next person so whether
or not it’s a man, it’s a woman, it’s a dogs world, I’m still
going to be here doing what it is that I do.” She says with
deep conviction.

the way I handle my issues. For someone who works
in media and communications, sometimes I’m not very
good at communicating my feelings in the right way so
I’d like to be able to do that properly. I would like to use
my time better but if there’s anything I’d like to change
about myself physically, I don’t think so. Marks and
bruises on my body is a result of the life that I have lived
and it’s something that I celebrate so I’m happy with
who I am, and with the way I look. I wouldn’t want to
be any taller, shorter, lighter, darker, I feel like I’m in a
good position as a woman.”
On what she’s learnt on love and relationships over
the past few years, “I’ve learnt that you can’t change a
person, you have to accept people for who they are and
help them learn that they have the ability to be better.
As women we tend to see a man and say ‘I think he’d
look better this way or if he worked in this place and
stuff’. And that’s not how we should be, we should
encourage people to be better, so you can’t change
someone in a relationship. I would just say, being pure
at heart because you’re handling somebody’s heart and
feelings, it’s a very delicate thing and you have to be
very careful because when you are in a relationship and
feelings are involved you have so much power in your
hands to change that person’s perspective on life. So I’m
definitely saying, being careful with another person’s
heart, being trustworthy, loving, giving and time is
another important thing when you think about love.
Some people just throw gifts in relationships and think
that’s enough but spending time together is another
good thing for me and something that references what
love is all about.”

When she’s asked if she’s ever been in love, “I actually
say that all the time but I’ve never been in-love”, comes
the quick reply. “I’ve definitely been infatuated with
people but I don’t think I’ve felt what love is. I know
what love is for my parents, my nieces and nephews
but for a man, no! My ex-boyfriend would probably be
somewhere a little bit angry but not yet. I’m waiting for
that to happen.”
What qualities do you look for in a man? “I used to
have a long list that I used to pray about then I realized
that I had to cut the list down. Now it’s as simple as
somebody who makes me laugh, who has aspirations,
someone who is smart. I love being in relationships
with men that I can learn with, a man that makes me
go home and think, wait, I learnt something today and
I can share that information. Definitely a God-fearing
man, a man that loves me as much and if not more than
I love him. He doesn’t have to be the richest man in
the world so long as I’m happy and so long as he cares
about how I feel.”
Zainab is one stickler for fashion. On wardrobe raid,
“In Nigeria, Tiwa Savage.” She goes on, “If I was robbing
her house and I had to go for something, it’ll be the
shoes, I’ll take the shoes first then the clothes.”
It’s quite surprising but Zainab is an online shopper.
“I just stay at home and spend about an hour or two
clicking on things and then I see how it looks on the
runway and it just gets delivered to my house. It’s very
convenient.”
On designers she’s loving now. “Jewel by Lisa (now
Lisa Folawiyo), I also have an obsession with menswear
and a menswear designer that I really love is Tzar and

‘Fifty Shades of Black’ were the first words that Beverly uttered as
soon as the interview commenced, her eyes glowed at those words
and passion shone through. For the actress who is seen every
day on television, all thanks to Tinsel, the ‘Fifty Shades of Black’
campaign was founded to inspire young girls in the society to love
themselves no matter what.
“In our society today, some of us have issues with our skin tone
by that I mean, some people don’t know how to feel about their
complexion and to a certain degree there is this segregation going
on between dark skin, light skin and brown skin which allows
people to believe that one skin tone is more desirable or beautiful
than the other. I’m trying to push forward the fact that we are all
the same and we are all beautiful. We are all part of one racethe black race and that is what is
most important. I am currently
organizing a youth tour and this
is where I will visit different
secondary schools to speak to
young girls between the ages
of nine and sixteen about
self-love, confidence and
self-worth. I genuinely
believe that by empowering
the generation after us,
they will grow up loving
themselves and inspiring
the next generation and so
on. I am also working on a
documentary that deals with the
same issue.”
On
what fashion
means to her
“It’s the ability

gorgeous,
confident and
fearless”
On if she initiated the campaign to address the rising issue of
bleaching in the African society, Beverly says, “No, the campaign
is what I decided to do mainly because I wanted a means to give
back and felt that one of the best ways would be to empower the
minds of young black girls. It is not a direct attack on anyone who
bleaches at all. But I genuinely believe that if I can teach girls about
self-esteem, self-worth and self-love they would feel that they are
worthy and blessed no matter what they look like.”
In June 2014, Beverly woke up with an amazing idea which came
like an epiphany and with an introductory article which she wrote
on Bellanaija, ‘Fifty Shades of Black’ was born. From organizing
photo-shoots to featuring a host of talents, she strove to show that
one can be successful regardless of complexion.
What started off as a dream has finally become reality and from
her acting successes, coupled with a huge deal from the Dark and
Lovely brand which has had the likes of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland
and many other international talents as the faces of the product, the
actress tells us how fulfilled she is.
“Honestly, I am grateful for everything that I have accomplished
thus far, a lot has been achieved in such a short space of time. I
have been able to inspire a lot of people along the way which makes
me very proud but when push comes to shove, I know there’s still
a lot to do. I am nowhere near my peak which keeps the process
fresh and exciting. It has been a steady journey so far and I’m
not showing the world everything too early because then it would
become boring and redundant so I am definitely happy with where
I am but not fulfilled just yet.”
Not too eager to let the cat out of the bag, Beverly speaks on the
surprises she has in store for her fans with her new projects. “I’m
looking forward to revealing more of who I am with each day, with
each year. That’s the beautiful thing about me, I tend to keep parts
of me to myself and then reveal gradually. I’m diversifying, not just
acting anymore but producing as well. The ‘Fifty Shades of Black’
documentary will be produced by me, and it’s a huge step in an
amazing direction, quite exciting”
There’s been a huge shush about it but now it’s out in the open –
international hair brand, Dark and Lovely chose Beverly Naya to
represent its brand. On what her reaction would have been if she was
told years ago about her ambassadorship, Beverly says,
“I would have been surprised, probably would have said seeing is
believing. This is a stepping-stone for me, it’s wonderful and surreal
because I used Dark and Lovely as a kid, I used their relaxer then
and still use their hair products till today. It’s an amazing feeling to
be revealed as one of their ambassadors and not only that, one has to
consider the fact that Dark and Lovely is an international brand. So
I’m not just representing any hair brand but I’m representing Dark
and Lovely and that’s really surreal. It’s huge!”
2014 is one big year for the actress, and how she made this leap, she
attributes to God’s grace and faith. There are new shows which will
be airing on BET international and BET America in no distant future
and Beverly has been affirmed, part of these shows. “The show for
BET America is called ‘Passport’ and it centers around four university
students who come from different parts of Africa and moved to
Atlanta, it just deals with the problems that come with college life,
financially and socially too. It’s more of a sitcom and it’s quite funny
to watch. The one for BET international (God Willing) is called
‘Before Thirty’, it has received quite a buzz and it’s not even out yet,
it’s about four females who are best friends and they are all trying to
get married before they are thirty, that’s the ultimate goal really. The
show deals with their love lives from four different perspectives. It’s
funny, romantic and I’m sure a lot of people will like it, the fashion
lovers will enjoy it too. It’s a girls’ dream really.”
Model, actress and media personality, Zainab Balogun was chosen
alongside Beverly to be an ambassador to the Dark and Lovely brand.
This is the first time they would be working together and Beverly
speaks on her future relationship with the radiantly beautiful Zainab.
“Zainab is a great person and I’m looking forward to working with
her more especially where Dark and Lovely is concerned. What I
like about Zainab is that she knows what she wants, she’s a go getter
and she’s such a lovely person too and that’s how I see myself.
That’s why I feel that Dark and Lovely found a fantastic brand
ambassador in Zainab.”
On the challenging aspects of being an ambassador to such a
big brand, Beverly let’s out her thoughts. “I think that’s what
sets me apart, the fact that its international puts me in a good
place. I’ve always seen myself as a global brand and slowly
but surely that’s how I’ve been building myself. Now,
to be approached by a global brand to be their brand
ambassador is extremely humbling and it’s like a dream
come true for me.”
Beverly cannot disclose enough on her big dreams
which are gradually coming true, we shift the focus
to her personal life. This is probably not what
you expected to hear about the Dark and Lovely
Ambassador but here’s what she loves most about
herself.
“I love the fact that I’m ambitious, I know what I want
and no matter what, I keep going. I could face so many
issues in my life and keep going. Giving up is not in my
vocabulary and that’s what I love the most about myself.”

On her choicest trend this season, “Crop-Tops, I can’t get enough of the
trend.”
When Beverly moved to Nigeria, she was quite young and the years have
seen her grow into the woman she is today. At first she grappled with the
society and tried to understand the workings of the industry, now she says
she has a better idea of how it all works and she’s moving forward on her
own terms and doing what makes her happy.
On love and relationships, here’s how the founder of ‘Fifty Shades of Black’
reacts to the question, ‘Have you ever been in love?’
“Weirdly enough, no! I’m not even trying to give an obvious answer
or sound cliché but the truth is, I haven’t been in love and I’m looking
forward to the day that I do experience genuine love. I know it’s out there.
That’s why I really enjoyed playing the character on ‘Before Thirty’ it’s like
at the end of the day, yes, we are actors but it is also a fantasy at the same
time so whilst playing Nkem (on ‘Before Thirty’) I was able to experience
someone else’s life, and experience how they felt when falling in love. It’s
always nice experiencing love from a different perspective.
On passion for causes, Beverly is most passionate about bullying, she
was bullied as a child and strongly feels that no child should have to
experience any form of bullying, she urges young people to speak up if
they are victims of such a horrible situation. “The fact that I was bullied as
a child is partly what inspired my ‘Fifty Shades of Black’ project”.
Sometimes, fans get too close for comfort and even though Beverly never
feels too watched or trapped by the number of fans that flock to her in
recognition she says, “Especially now that I’m on Tinsel because it’s like
automatic visibility considering Tinsel’s huge followership and the fact
that I’m on television almost every day. But then it’s part of what I signed
up as an actor, I think it’s a beautiful feeling for the most part, so far as I
look good when recognized. ”She laughs. Beverly also throws more light
on reasons she never let what haters say on social media, get to her. “I
don’t really let negativity get to me because it’s pointless. I can’t get into
an argument with an anonymous person, someone that I’ll probably never
see in my life. A scenario is when you have no idea why they are negative
towards you, why bother? It could be the fact that you’re living out their
dream or doing something that they can’t do. There’s always something
so I don’t think it’s necessary to deal with negativity on social media.
Projecting as much positivity as possible is a much happier and wiser
option for me.” she says.
Fashion is one staple we love and Beverly pulls off every look effectively.
With new designers bursting at the seams with creative yet beautiful
designs spilling through the shops, here’s her quote on what fashion
means to her. “It’s the ability to be the woman I’ve always wanted to be;
gorgeous, confident and fearless. Being able to wear what I want and
feeling sexy, confident and stunning in whatever I’m wearing.” On if she
was the child who wore her mom’s clothing even when it was too big for
her. “When I was younger funny enough, I didn’t like my mom’s clothing.
You couldn’t pay me enough to wear any of her clothing but now that
I’m older, I now appreciate them. Mainly her bags and jewellery, I am
absolutely obsessed with my mom’s bags and she’s always teasing me
about those times as a teenager that I used to turn my nose up at them.”
Having just started to actualize her dreams here’s what the actress looks
forward to in the future. “I look forward to being the best version of
myself, having a family, achieving all of my goals and heart’s desires whilst
inspiring people along the way.”
To young girls whose dream is to follow her footsteps, Beverly says,
“Believe in yourself, that’s the first step to success and do whatever you
want to do with confidence knowing that you can achieve all of your goals
if you set your mind to it. Put God first in everything, it’s very important
to have faith because that’s how you actualize all of your dreams and
aspirations. Have a clear idea of what you want, once you have a definitive
idea then your path becomes clearer and you can walk along that path a
lot more smoothly*

This year the fifth edition of Africa Fashion Week New York took place during the famous New
York Fashion Week in September. AFWNY is the brain child of Adiat Disu (also owns Adiree, a PR &
communication agency) who started the event to create a structure around Africa’s fashion industry
and promote international economic partnerships while promoting brands from Africa on a global
scale for African designers – emerging and established in the international market. Designers who

Vogue Talents is an initiative which is cohosted by by Vogue Italia and thecorner.com – a
platform for designers scouted around the world

took place during the Milan Fashion Week at
Palazzo Morando, Milan. From Lanre DaSilva’s
(Nigeria) hand printed ‘Rock Delight’ which
was inspired by one of Nigeria’s biggest tourist
attractions, Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, Ogun
state to Sophie Zinga of Sengal’s ‘Abyssinia’ a
nod to old age Italian empire. Also showcased
were New York based Nigerian sisters William
Okpo, Omer Asim (Sudan) and Studio One
Eighty Nine (an ethical fashion brand owned by
Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah).

At the MBNYFW Spring/Summer
2015, the line-up included mother and daughter
duo from Nigeria, Deola Sagoe & CLAN showcasing
super feminine pieces in unique ‘adire’ prints and
simple but striking silhouettes with pretty cutouts
and butterflies while CLAN presented sporty chic
in the form of mesh, thigh high slits and cut off
shoulders. South Africa’s David Tlale was all about
beautifully cut bejeweled ankara pieces and a
nod to the Victorian era as well as flowing peach
toned garments. Nigeria’s Lisa Folawiyo formerly
known as Jewel by Lisa showcased pretty clashing
prints whilst still sticking to her beading signature
in fashion-forward separates. Others at MBNYFW
were Cameroon’s Kibonen New York who debuted
vivid ankara print jackets for men and dresses for
women and Kenya’s Suno whose brightly coloured
stripes were feminine yet cool.

e sat in a well shaded area at the
captivating Centro Mall, Lekki,
where our photo shoot was to take
place, talking about random issues
while we expected our pretty,
multi-talented cover personality,
Eva Alordiah, who is known
simply as EVA. A few minutes
into our random discussions and
observations of Centro mall’s
shops, a car arrived with our cover talent greeting us with her super
friendly smile.
‘Eva is here! Eva is here!’ announced the Editor in order to gather her
glam squad. Like her usual happy and daring self, her excitement to be a
Beauty Box cover personality was literarily written all over her face, and
she didn’t fail to throw out her smile to everyone, as is she had known us
all for ages.
Just as she settled to get prepared for photographer Moussa and his lens,
and also awe us all with her makeup skills, my mind couldn’t help but
wonder where her inspiration to do makeup so well had spring up from,
“As a child I to drew a lot in school. I was a good fine artist. As I grew
older, I fell in love with fashion. My mum introduced me to fashion. She
taught me how to sew when I was between 8 and 10. And when I fell in
love with fashion, the part of me that was drawing pictures and drawing
fine art evolved into makeup artistry, which is why I do makeup so well.
My inspiration comes from a lot of things. I watch a lot of TV, fashion TV,
music videos. I am always in touch with high fashion, I love high fashion
makeup. Inspiration really is a buildup of a lot of things that we have
acquired from learning. I never stop learning because you never know
where inspiration can hit”.
The rapper will wow you with her good sense of humour when you have
a close encounter with her. She had us all caught up with laughter at her
jokes and mannerisms.
Surely Eva is a rapper, but she has other talents you might not have known.
She’s a Computer Science graduate, she writes songs, a make-up artiste
and a fashion designer. She revealed to us how these talents where able
to spring forth. “I got my hands in a lot of things and my mum was very
flexible with my experiments, whether it was music, stage play, fashion,
makeup, writing or dancing. My folks where very supportive parents and
encouraged my artiness.” One lesson for all parents, let your kids do what
they want and get multi-talented Eva-like kids.
Most multi-talented people derive fulfilment from one talent more than
the others, but not Eva. She finds fulfillment in all her God-given talents.
“They all serve their purposes. I get different gratifications from each of
them”.
Known for her witty, dynamic lyrical ability, a flawless on-stage flow,
provocative fashion sense and a face to her music that commands respect,
Eva is working tirelessly to bring us more, and as 2014 progresses, we

won’t be left waiting for long. “I work every day. I feel there’s much more to achieve as long as
I have breathe in me. I’ve been so busy, from studio to various shoots, the video for her single
DEAF dropped in early 2014 and the reception has been massive”.
I draw inspiration from every interview, and Eva surely gave me one. On whether she’s
satisfied with the current pace of her music, Eva doesn’t see that on her page, “I don’t think any
human being should ever be satisfied, I think we should all strive for more. If I was satisfied, I
would have stopped doing it. So, no I’m not satisfied.’’
She gives a peek into ‘Eva and writing’. “I love fiction, especially horror and thrillers, and these
are the kinds of movies I love as well because they are usually suspense-filled. I currently write
anonymously for magazines, blogs and other websites asides my website. They really request
me to write fashion, makeup and motivational stories for them. When I am not writing, I get
down to my business”.
As a celebrity, (though she is modest about it), she always does her makeup no matter how big
the event is. Photo shoots, videos, red carpets etc, the rapper only trusts herself to do justice
to her makeup. “I feel like this is a makeup artist problem, where you trust yourself so much
that you don’t trust somebody else. I haven’t met anybody yet that I’m convinced will do my
makeup better than I can. Maybe if I meet Jay Emmanuel or Sam Fine. But so far, I always do
my makeup”. One thing Eva is always particular about is ensuring she has perfect eyebrows, I
couldn’t help but take several glances at it, wishing she could help make mine perfect as well.
“Makeup products I can’t do without include, Revlon Colour Stay Foundation, Coastal Scent
Bronzer, Contour Cake and my Brow pencil. I love to do my brow perfectly every day”.
Eva is one daring diva who strives for uniqueness. She has an eccentric look, which adds some
character to her beauty. Her looks is definitely not the regular ones Nigerians are comfortable
with. “It doesn’t help when people pass negative comments about my looks because I’ve come
to understand that we all have different purposes. I can’t please everybody, and if everybody

likes me, then there’s a problem. Everybody did not like Jesus you know, I have to have people
that do not subscribe to the things I do, or the styles I wear. It doesn’t get to me at all, it
actually makes me want to be better. The thing with beauty and style and fashion is as long
as you’re comfortable, you shouldn’t really bother about what other people say. Be yourself!
That’s really what style is about. I’m very comfortable in my skin, I’m very comfortable with
who I’ve created as Eva, so I’m fine.”
Sure there’s the makeup side of Eva you’ve never known, I’ll be happy to divulge to you that
our Eva has a makeup outfit, Makeup by Orsela. One inspiring thing about her makeup outfit
is that she derives joy from teaching people, thereby touching lives. “The company, Makeup
by Orsela was founded in 2010 officially. But prior to 2010, I had been doing makeup for such
a long time, ten years to be exact. I started doing makeup professionally about 5 years ago.
What I really wanted to do with the company was create amazing looks and have a company
that people can trust for great makeup looks all the time. But the most exciting thing about
the company Makeup by Orsela, was the makeup school extension. I have my interns that
work with me, they do the job when I am not available. I have to separate it from music and
give it my all because when I’m doing makeup sessions and teaching, I cannot have enough
time for music. The biggest joy is knowing I’ve helped somebody start a business of their own
because the beauty business is such a multi-million dollar business, and it’s amazing that more
Nigerians want to tap into that.”
Eva’s professional makeup skills has graced the faces of celebrities such as, “I’ve worked
with Toke Makinwa, Toolz, Yvonne Vixen and Chidinma. I’m looking forward to working
with more of them. I’d really love to do Tiwa Savage’s makeup. She has such an amazing
face structure. Also, I’d really love to do Waje’s makeup. Waje would be a challenging and
interesting personality to work with. I’d love to do Muna as well. For outside Nigeria, I’m a

50’s 60’s 70’s girl, so I’ll go back to Grace Jones, and do a lot of contouring. I absolutely
love contour”.
Eva is known for her signature Mohawk style, and this year her hair look has been
redefined. She attributes the inspiration for her new hair to her mum’s love for Grace
Jones. “My hair is not signature anymore, it was a Mohawk before, now I’ve just scrapped
one side. I grew up loving everything my mum loved, so I connected to that era of Grace
Jones and Madonna. I can’t stand long hair, I would do it for a shoot only. You’ll mostly
find me wearing short cuts, the longest hair I’ve done is shoulder length”. Despite always
wearing her unique hair style, she sees everyday as a bad hair day and her natural hair as
the best she can ever have on. “The thing is I’m not a diva, so I always have bad hair days.
My natural hair never has a bad hair day. But as soon as I have weave and extension on,
every day becomes a bad hair day. I use shea butter and honey on my natural hair”.
With her makeup well done, pose well put out for the camera and ever smiling face, she
captured all eyes as the shoot progressed. Her beauty routine which I know you all can
steal from is. “I use Pure Rose Water, black soap, shea butter, vaseline, sugar and honey.
Exfoliating is a beauty routine I cannot do without. I exfoliate my face, my leg, and my
body. So, it’s either Shea butter and Sugar or Honey and Sugar. To keep your skin healthy
and glowing, exfoliating is key. I really love the avocado one, because it makes your face
smooth and tones your skin. Avocados are very good and cheap as well, so if you mash it up
in sugar, it becomes an exfoliating lotion for your skin.” This is one beauty tip that would
be easy for you to steal and practice while at home. Her beauty philosophy is unique, the
smile is the real secret to beauty. “I believe that beauty is in the smile. No matter how much
pancake or lipstick you put on your face, if you don’t have a beautiful smile to go with it,
there is really no point, and I feel like people should smile more. There’s so much hate in
the world right now, I can’t even understand the level of hate that’ll we are dealing with,
I feel like we have to get to the point where we can just love each other effortlessly, share,
give and just smile”.
I had to grab one last make-up tip from the expert herself. “Always ensure that you use
a primer before applying a foundation. Lots of people don’t know this, and they still
don’t subscribe because primers can be expensive sometimes. But it’s actually very good
investment because your foundation will stay in place all day long, and it’ll apply smoothly
and effortlessly without creasing when you use a primer. Second tip, when you fill in your
eyebrows, ensure that you create a perfect eyebrow by concealing unnecessary pencil or
powder strokes on your brows. What I do is use a lighter foundation or concealer and an
angled brush. That’s how I keep perfect eyebrows all the time. Last makeup tip, you have
to buy brushes. There’s no point doing makeup if you don’t have the proper tools, so buy
proper makeup brushes.” That’s it with super star Eva, hope this makes you feel like now
know Eva personally.

The hair, skin and nails are all variations of protein and moisture that is called keratin. The variations are between 19 -22 amino acids that are commonly known as ‘moisture’ and ‘protein’. Hair is
approximately divided into 80%protein and 20%moisture while skin is 80%moisture and 20% protein. Hence, the fact that the skin being the largest organ in the body makes it vital for humans to
drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to operate at optimum physical level. These percentages are also good indications of what is best absorbed by skin or hair, contrary to what we have been led to
believe or think we know. The hair trend presently in Nigeria is for women to wear their natural hair without chemicals, using totally natural ingredients for maintenance. This combination does not
necessarily produce good results. This has led some into using natural food ingredients on their hair with the belief that it would work and give them the sleek, lustrous hair they need. Below are lists of
natural edible ingredients that are either good or bad for your hair and why it is so.

healing properties with vitamins and
minerals. Aloe Vera is an excellent
cure for sunburn, eczema, wounds
and scars when the natural gel is
massaged onto the skin.

the hair or scalp.
Calcium Hydroxide: The chemical which is
found in (‘Kit relaxer’), which everyone believes
damages hair and skin is not a very fair
assumption. If the Calcium Hydroxide damages
the hair then it is due to lack of knowledge;
when used correctly Calcium Hydroxide is
gentle on the scalp but it will never straighten
the hair the way Sodium Hydroxide would.
Lack of knowledge of development time and
the ability to straighten hair results in burnt
skin, which looks like dandruff and may lead
to real dandruff which then takes at least six
weeks to heal.

igeria’s Queen of soul Lami Phillips, is
out and about working on new material
and promoting her videos and upcoming
album; ‘Pieces of Love’.
She has two portions to her album: a
portion of it was recorded live in the UK,
with a famed producer of Amy Winehouse
and George Benson, while the rest is being put together in
Nigeria.
It’s interesting to see how Lami’s total look reflects the two sides
we hear of in her album: the soft glam afro soul lady, and the
funk rock chic!
From TV interviews with other artistes, to behind
the scene shots from her soon to be released video
“Romantic Boy”. We see how Lami maintains a standard
of class and uniqueness in her total look.
Speaking on the making of “Romantic Boy” featuring K9,
STWO media, the producers and directors of the video
shares “Lami also told us she wanted to incorporate a
story into the video with flashbacks as well as some
celebrity cameos. We reworked the script to tell the
story of a young boy and young girl parting ways in
primary school only to find each other again in their
teenage years. We secured the school and the two
children who would be the young K9 and the young
Lami.”
Lami said “I’ve had my share of fashion faux pas in the past. I
haven’t always gotten it right. Even with makeup artistes. But I’m
learning what works for me. I totally love the black dress from
Tiannah Styling. And I’ve gone back to shopping for myself and
maintaining my preference. In the end, I like feeling elegant yet
sexy, and still comfortable”.

D Denrele literally jumps into the studio in his super elevated
‘akpolas’ heels. He is wearing a dark silk shirt and pants, while his
eyes are covered up in shades. With an extended hair that stands
in the spikiest style, Denrele has long out-grown the character,
‘Dubem’ a role he played on Kiddy Vision 101 when he was eleven
years old. TV presenting did not take a back seat in his career and
even though he for a while, ventured into modelling, campaigns
and even featured in music videos, Denrele is still one of the best
presenters, television has ever had.
After watching him on Speak Out, Tales by Moonlight and Kiddy
Vision 101, the biggest shows for Nigerian kids during the nineties,
Denrele delves in on how it all started. “I remember clearly that it
was in April 1995 and I was in SS1. It was quite funny because my
cousin originally hinted me in the house about a girl in her class
who was in Kiddy Vision 101 and who had invited her to be a part
of the recordings. She invited me to go with her to NTA for the
auditioning. They both came from Lagos City College in Yaba and
I was in St. Gregory’s college Obalende. I remember waiting for
them after school till three pm and because it was Friday, we closed
school at one o’clock. Eventually, they showed up and we went on
to NTA at Ahmadu Bello way Victoria Island. On getting there, we
saw a lot of students from many schools and they were all making
noise so we joined in. I guess that at that point in time, we weren’t
aware of competition so, we were all chatting up and trying to be
louder than the next person.”
Denrele was instantly chosen for a role in the Kiddy Vision 101
show when the producer of the show, Immaculata Etta, who was
popularly called Aunty Etta by the children, gave him a script to
read since he refused to keep quiet as she had admonished. “I knew
that I had gotten into trouble but continued talking and when she
said ‘you this boy, keep quiet’, I said ‘na wah’ she beckoned to me
and brought out a script which she gave me to read. I read it so
well to her surprise as well as my mates and there she said to me,
‘you’ve gotten the part’ and to all the students there she said ‘you
can all go home’.” Denrele describes his first role as an actor with
a deep sense of nostalgia, he all of a sudden, grew nervous when
he came on set for the first time and there he realized that it was
a different ball game. Three months down the line, he bagged the
lead role and started earning eight hundred naira per episode
which was more than any of the children actors on the show
earned. “Kiddy Vision101 opened doors for me, plus it landed me
my first cover on TV Guide which had the most interesting caption,
‘Denrele , Veteran Kid Actor’ I was so excited.” He says.
Even as a child, Denrele had teeming fans as he was recognized
for the most part of his childhood life. He recalls a day he went
swimming with friends where a man recognized him and gave him
a gift of five hundred naira all because he was a popular face on
television.

On if he thinks he is where he’s supposed to be considering the
reality that he has been on television since childhood, he says.
“Well, I’m human so I’ll say I wish I was way-above where I
am now because I feel that if I was in Hollywood, I would be on
another level. Coming down to reality, this is Naija and I am glad
because I’m at this level and here’s why, most of all the actors
and actresses on Kiddy Vision 101 didn’t continue in the media.
The only people I can remember that are still in the industry right
now are Wole Ojo who won AMBO and Emmanuel Sunday who
currently works for NTA. Overall, I’d say maybe I’m hoping to be a
little higher but I still thank God that I’m relevant today.”
From the media to even the corporate world, Denrele has been
described in so many terms, however here’s what the entertainer
says of himself. “I’d like to say that I am fun, a lot of fun actually.
I am abnormally abnormal, maybe one of life’s unexplainable
mysteries and I like to think that I am the 8th world wonder. But
overall, I’d like people to know that I’m just a regular person in
and out, I think that’s what a lot of people don’t know. They judge
from the clothes, from physical appearance, from the outlandish
behavior and say ‘he’s eccentric, don’t go near him’ but if you look
beneath all of that you’ll just see a regular Yoruba boy from Ebutte
Metta Alagomeji.”
CAST AWAY
So successful has Denrele’s career been that his extended family
who once turned their backs on him, are now proud of him.
“Family is the best gift anyone can have and if your family doesn’t
stand by you, then get another career! My family has stood by me,
my dad is proud of me and I would judge from my dad’s outlook
on life because my dad is Nigerian. So considering the fact that he
is a Yoruba man and we have Yoruba values and societal cultural
norms that we must follow, my dad never ever turned his back
on me. I remember that my extended family members will wake
up every morning and call my father ‘Alaba ooo omo iti ya were’

meaning, Denrele is going bizarre, they’ll call grandmas from
Port Harcourt who would come home to cry to my father to do
something. I was in the choir in the church then and I remember
that I went to church one day and they told me not to come to
church again until I cut my hair short, like really short and I was
excommunicated from church. The reception from society was very
negative and I was just cast aside but with family, they completely
understood. When we go to church, my church members would
call my dad and tell him, ‘Alaba can’t you see your son? What kind
of example are you setting?’ and when he comes home, instead of
rebuking me, he would laugh at what the people have been saying.
Then, I used to cut my father’s shirts when I didn’t have much
clothes, whilst I was hustling. If there were no shirts for me, I’ll take
my father’s shirt and cut off one of the sleeves and when he attempts
to wear it he’ll find out that I have cut off a sleeve, he’d be like
‘the boy has cut it again.’ All the way I owe him all the ‘glory and
honour’ if I can put it that way. But now in my extended family’s
opinion, ‘Denrele is our child’.”(Laughs)
“I cannot sing to save my life.” Denrele said when asked if he might
delve into music in the future. It’s common knowledge that Denrele
is one huge fan of appearing on music videos. “I used to be in the
choir and I was an amazing treble singer till my voice broke. What I
used to do in the choir then was, I used to dance so well so everyone
just assumed that I was a good singer, so I was given awards, from
best chorister, to best singer and dancer until one day I was asked
to do a duet with someone. So when the organist played the keys
on the board, everyone was alarmed that I could not sing. I really
couldn’t sing eventually when the organist kept pressing the keys I
kept singing off key, and that’s how I ended up singing my way out
of the choir. For music, I’m not too sure. I have had artistes approach
me like, Ruggedman, Terry G and some other artistes but that’s a
different ball game all together. I love featuring in music videos
though. I wish I did a song like Pharell’s Happy, but if I get the right
song and maybe I’m taken to a studio where a vocal enhancer would
be used to disguise my horrible voice, then I might give it a try.”
When asked if he has any advice to give to up-comers in television
presenting, he says. “First and foremost, if you’ve never travelled
out of Nigeria, please drop the accent. Originality is key, if it’s your
style, all well and good. Secondly, I’d love presenters to do a lot of
research, it’s one thing to be on the red carpet interviewing someone
and then you don’t know who the person is. Always get a brief about
the event, this is Nigeria and I know that everything is last minute
and you might not get a brief but you should do your brief when you
are there, it’s important to know who is who. And again one thing
I have noticed about television in Nigeria is that presenters should
make the people they are interviewing feel very comfortable with
them in a matter of seconds. Throw them a compliment, people want
to feel like the 8th world wonder. Appreciate them, say something
and make the person feel like a million bucks. Lastly, as a TV
presenter it doesn’t end on action and cut, no way! There is life after
television and you should get into the industry, get to know as many
people as possible and market yourself, social media is key. I think
overall with time we’ll learn and we will get to do our best.”
It’s no surprise that Denrele has been quite busy, he has suddenly
turned ‘author’ with a new book which hasn’t been completed yet.
“I’m writing a book, I’m putting finishing touches to my manuscript.
From 1995 to 2015 that’s twenty years in the industry and it’s been
turbulent and filled with good things and disappointments. I have
been let down so many times. I have had points in life when I had
nothing and I had doors slammed in my face but I never gave up.”
He says.
What makes Denrele stand out from other presenters? “I am not an
entertainer who needs to take on many things to get out there and
be as efficient as possible. No! I go out there because I love my job
and for me it’s not just about going out there and selling my brand
or creating the ‘Denrele was here’ effect. It’s not about the figures
as well. It’s about going out there and making people happy and
building success stories. Overall, it’s the fact that I put a smile on
people’s faces.” He says cheerfully.
Having no recorded dull moment, Denrele speaks on transcending.
“Not only did I start from Kiddy Vision 101 but Speak Out as
well, and I did a bit of Tales by Moonlight then I moved on to
modelling. I remember that I was one of the first models for
house of Kesse Jabari with Annie Macaulay-Idibia. I used to
model with the likes of Linda Ikeji who was the hottest super
model back then. From modeling, I moved to campaigns, I
was the face of Fanta pineapple for two years after which I
moved to Hi-malt, then Mentos sweet, and Orange Drugs.
I danced for Ruggedman in the ‘Baraje’ video, I danced
for Jazzman Olofin and Laura Ikeji when she used to be
an artiste. I also danced for Charly boy’s wife- Lady D
and Iroko band which was handled by a veteran film
maker Dr. Ola Balogun who started out with Herbert
Ogunde in those days. I remember one time, we came
from AIT and there was no space in the car so I hung at

the back of his jeep, from Alagbado to Yaba. I held
on to the rungs at the back of the car and I said ‘Father
Lord, if I fall this hustle na wah ooo.’ In 2005 I got my first
big break with presenting, Tajudeen Adepetu called me 6th of
June 2005, to come the following week, I auditioned, did series of
screen tests, got a job and the rest is history.”
FASHION AS A FORM OF EXPRESSION
Unable to deny his love for fashion and style, Denrele gives us his
personal description of fashion. “Fashion fades but style is eternal.
Everyone can buy fashion but style, you have to own. Fashion is in
the clothes, style is in the wearer. I think without fashion, I’d just be
a walking ghost or zombie. Fashion is everything that I live for. I
sleep, eat, and drink fashion. I totally soak up fashion because I love
everything that fashion has to offer. I don’t follow trends and I cannot
afford the extravagant labels that we see out there, but to think about it,
for the past couple of years, I haven’t bought anything with my money,
everything that I wear is a gift, that’s the perks of the job. Fashion is an
expression of individualism mixed with charisma.”
For very unique and daring fashion-sense, Denrele deserves an
accolade at least for winging what many would call an ‘impossible feat’.
Has he ever been caught stepping out in simple T-shirts and pants?
“I think that one of the most historical moments would have to be,
shooting for Complete Fashion. I would say that when I am stepping
out of the house, it’s not just about wearing the clothes and shoes and
feeling like I’m on top of the world. Naaa! I tell people, ‘this is an
identity. Sow a thought and reap an act, sow an act, you reap a talent,
sow a talent, you reap a character, sow a character, you reap and
identity.’ I’ve been sowing from day one, this identity is going nowhere.
If I’m stepping out of the house, I look the part. At times I sleep in my
shoes because I’m tired and I’ve worked all day. I have flat slippers
somebody made with my name on it, that’s why I wear it all the time.
So I think that today, doing this shoot and wearing some wonderful
clothes that I usually would not wear, has been that fashionable
moment in the history of style and showbiz in Denrele’s life.” He says
with aplomb.
Does Denrele wear make-up? “Yes I do, I wouldn’t deny that.” From
make-up to hairstyles, the ace presenter is notorious for doing what
best suits him. “I use Clearasil to wash my face and scrub it. Once I do
that, I moisturize with L’Oreal and then I use primer after which I use
concealer and then, powder. It took me very long to find my shade
of powder that’s why everyone thought I was bleaching because all
my powders were always ten shades lighter than my shade. Finally,
I found my shade at the Mac store and that’s what I use all the time
because for me, I’m never caught unawares, even if I’m leaving a show
or going to the airport, I’ll look the part. This is an industry and a job
that puts food on my table and it will feed my future generation.” On
hairstyle inspirations, “I have a lot of hair, thank God and thanks to
my mom who is half Indian and half Mauritian. Over time I got bored
with it’s natural afro kinky look, so I started experimenting on and off
even before Lady Gaga started singing, I’d started wearing heels and
colouring my hair. People say I’m copying Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj.
I’ve always liked to experiment and I feel life is short, I live each day
like it’s the last. If I wake up in the morning and want to go purple, I

will do it. I’ve even added extensions to my hair. I had an experience with Brazilian hair when
I went to Port Harcourt for a show. I didn’t know that there was a special serum and comb for it
and I didn’t have all that, so the day I got to Port Harcourt, I looked like a ‘gangbanged’ person,
the hair was standing in an awkward manner. I’ve done it all, even lace wig, I did that recently
for the fun of it but it itched so I took it off. Many people say, I’m going extra miles with my
hair to catch a sugar daddy but it’s not true. What sugar daddy do I intend to catch, looking like
a Halloween costume?” He says.
In the next three to five years, Denrele sees himself building more success stories, having a
positive outlook on life more than ever, discovering in-depth happiness and doing more of what
he loves to do best. “There’s no stopping me! Tsunami Denrele ! Hurricane Denrele ! Right now,
I’m ready to blow you all away!”

Denrele’s doesn’t design his shoes and neither does he buy them. “My shoes are gifts from
people who appreciate what I do. Peter of Psquare got me two pairs of shoes from the UK and
that’s how I get gifts.” How does he walk on heels without falling especially his elevated ones
which he is now so well known by? “I love uncomfortable shoes. For me, I think I sacrifice
comfort for fashion because I have a pair that make my feet feel like they want to rip apart but
I still wear them. I’ve had blisters on my feet but now I think I’ve conquered all the shoes so
there’s nothing that I’ll wear that’s uncomfortable right now. My shoes are so heavy to ship in,
the left pair of my ‘rock gladiator’ shoes came into Nigeria in January and the right pair came in
March because it was so heavy to ship in together. I’m not wearing them to stand out or arrest
attention, I just like them.”

hen Gideon signed up for a role in ‘A Place in the Stars’a film inspired by the late Dora Akunyili- he never
expected the overwhelming response the movie has
garnered thus far. Kim Dakim, a character played by
Gideon Okeke, is his most challenging role yet as it not
only changed his perception of life but for five years, has
grown on him. In his recent tete-a-tete with Complete
Fashion, the actor delves into the movie’s cause – the fight against fake and adulterated
drugs; the inspiration behind the film and the unique directing technique of awardwinning director, Steve Gukas. Gideon stars alongside veteran actors, Dejumo Lewis
(Mr Dakim, Kim’s father) and SegunArinze (Diokpa Okonwo – the villian) as well as
Yemi Blaq, Femi Branch, Matilda Obaseki, Julian Mcdowell, Armajit Deu and Amaka
Mgbor.

What do you think would be your fans reaction to the movie, ‘A
Place in the Stars’?
They would be as shocked as I am or as I would be, myself. It’s
my first movie and I read the script seven years ago. We started
filming in 2009 and wrapped filming in 2012. It’s a film that has
grown on me and that I have grown on and my expectation is that
it would grow on the audience too.
Do you see a reflection of your persona in the character, Kim
Dakim?
The actor always has to bear in mind that he’s doing it for the
character and not necessarily for himself. So yes, it’s Gideon
playing it but it’s Kim’s two-dimensional thoughts that have been
brought to life by Gideon. Most of the work that I put in ‘A Place
in the Stars’ was already in the script so it’s just a little from me
because most of it was in the detailed eye of the director.
In your words tell us about ‘A Place in the Stars’
It’s a legacy tale, it’s a father son story about a young lawyer who
is caught at the crossroad of making a choice between making
money and keeping a good name. There’s an antagonist (Segun
Arinze’s role) who’s a drug peddler and he ships in substandard
drugs for sale and this young lawyer (role played by Gideon) gets
a win on the fact that there’s information that he could take up
and it’s either he makes good bread from that or he saves lives by
clamping down on the drug cartel.
Do you think that ‘A Place in the Stars’ has set a bar for Nigerian
movie production?
Kunle Afolayan is a huge reference in Nigerian film, he is a man
I admire and respect. Regardless of what people say that quality
is a matter of choice, Kunle Afolayan has done it three times over,
he has done big budget films and still delivered in ‘our kind of’
Nigerian time. A peculiar challenge to ‘A Place in the Stars’ was
the fact that we had cash constraints at some point, hence the
reason we had to go and come back again but in that, it’s given
me a long hard lesson in patience which is why I feel that this is
the way it should be done and not hastily. Imagine from Steve’s
point of view when he engaged the project himself, when he
commissioned the writers to write the story which was probably
seven or nine years ago. This he started and had to keep going till
he got to the end, that’s a long hard lesson in patience and it tells
you a lot about Steve and it tells you a lot about his character as
well. I see him as a man who starts out on his dream and doesn’t
let it die as he follows through to the end. I think that a lot of film
makers should emulate that but to their credit it’s also not their
fault because they are trying to make returns to their investors,
which I understand. It’s striking that balance between creative
freedom and letting a film run it’s natural course which is exactly
what the film ‘A Place in the Stars’ was doing.
What do you feel will be the reaction of film critics after seeing ‘A
Place in the stars’
came back with training. It’s not an excuse but you are going to
see different levels of Gideon and I hope that the story resonates
with the average Nigerian on the street because what we are
gunning for is the idea of ‘A Place in the Stars’ becoming popular
culture. I hope that this film will seat in the minds of people whose
catchphrase is, being a good Nigerian.
What’s the catch in the movie, ‘A Place in the Stars’?
It’s a story based on perpetration of fake drugs and its effect in the
society and funny enough you’d reckon with me that few Igbo’s
travel to other parts of the world and make substandard products
so I feel that I can be the poster boy saying, ‘you can stop that,
you can go to school and you don’t have to end up in Onitsha as
a trader, look at me, I did good’. It’s just about change. When I
engaged in the project I wasn’t thinking like this, I was thinking
about the money but I like the underline subject matter of the
movie, I like the writing, I love how it was played out and I like
how Steve was telling the story. It’s a movie with a cause and I
hope that the cause sits in the minds of the audience.
I hope that they get their pens out and really write from a genuine
sincere place. I also want to be critiqued, I am laying myself naked
to be torn down but I’ll set a premise first before that is done. What
you are going to see in ‘A Place in the Stars’ is a very young Gideon,
an untrained Gideon because the truth of the matter is I started
out as a raw talent on the project and it took that long a time
in principle photography. I had to go to drama school between
making the film so I got my training in between making the film.
So whilst I started the film, I was untrained and at some point, I

I got a gig with the Discovery Network, it’s a youth sensitization
show. It’s a talk show, called Discovery Plus 234. Discovery
network is doing this across three countries, Nigeria, Kenya and
Ghana, so you’ll see 233, 234, and 254 to identify the countries. Its
aim is to make young people understand that learning, inspiration,
and knowledge is fun. The underlining is called, ‘Discovery
Learning Alliance’. I also have films due for release in October
and January 2015 and I’m back on Tinsel, so there’s quite a bit
happening for me right now.
What is your perception of the late Professor Dora Akunyili?
I think she was one of the bravest of her time.

The Fayrouz Expression Show
This year, Nigeria’s premium soft drink Fayrouz, created a platform
for young undergraduates with unique creative talents to showcase
original works as a team of four – Model, Designer, Photographer
and Make-up artist. The competition started with a team of 10
shortlisted from online entries who showcased their works in a
battle at regional shows in Lagos and Enugu under the judges Sylvia
and Olivia Enekwe of Gozel Green, Adebayo Oke-Lawal of Orange

Akanni Oyefusi (an ex-president of fashion Designers Association
of Nigeria - FADAN) and catwalk choreographer, Warebi Martha.
For the grand finale, the judges were Mai Atafo, Kunbi Oyelese of
April by Kunbi and Caaterian of Kinabuti. Contestants who made it
through to final battle/grand finale showcasing 12 piece collection
each were Team Elan and Loud Tribe. The winning team who won
based on commercial viability, originality and creativity, Team Elan,
walked away with $20,000 and an automatic entry to present their
collection at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2014. The 2nd
team, Loud Tribe walked away with $4,000.
