It’s been a wonderful (and crazy at times) year at Haircare Australia and as we bring you our 37th issue, we ask that you take five with us to reflect on the year that was, to celebrate with us and immerse yourself in the joys of summer and travel. Many a milestone has been reached as 2015 draws to an end; an Australia-wide Tour, our first Business Summit and of course, an impressive 40 years in business. To the Gauvin family, we raise a glass as we celebrate their passion and contribution to the industry. Embarking on their unknown journey all those years ago, Jan and Geoff’s story inspires us to take risks, to work passionately and most importantly enjoy the adventure. "Our passion and love for the industry is incredible and we'll love everything about it until the day we die – and oh the fun we've had; we've had so much fun." - Jan Gauvin. So while we look forward to a busy Christmas period, we also look forward to the upcoming year. Wherever this year has taken you, and wherever your destination lay this summer, we wish you a safe and happy festive season and look forward to another adventure with you in 2016. KIM KARADASHIAN’S SAVING GRACE Everyone knows about Kim Kardashian's recent blonde transformation but what remains a mystery is why she didn’t use Olaplex to make the dramatic change. Making her transition from dark to light without the one and only, proven form of colour insurance has understandably caused Kim’s locks to suffer. In a recent interview Kim announced that she has been introduced to Olaplex and uses it to help rebuild her hair. Her hot tip is sleeping with Olaplex No.3 in her hair, and is seeing stronger, healthier hair as a result. I was introduced a treatment called Olaplex. When your hair is really damaged, if you sleep in that, it really works. I notice a huge difference! – Kim Kardashian's hot tip for using Olaplex No.3 to repair her hair. H oused in a large, bright, industrial space that oozes minimalist modern chic, is boutique hair and beauty salon Neon Beauty. Paying homage to the luscious tropical surrounds of the Gold Coast, leafy plants adorn the walls providing the ultimate escape, a place to indulge the senses. Built from the ground up, Neon Beauty is the product of passionate owner, Kristin. Starting out life as a single-owner operator business focusing on lashes and hair extensions, Neon Beauty has not only grown in size, but also in offering. What do you love most about being a hairdresser? Every day is a new challenge and every day we get to create something new. I will never get tired of that, plus there is something so satisfying in making guests feel confident about themselves. What is the one piece of advice you always give your clients? Quality over quantity… full stop. What pieces of clothing could you not live without for spring/summer? I love my Ford + Harris ‘Spike Jonze’ succulent silver necklace pendant, it dresses up every outfit I own. Also my Valley ‘Sabbath’ sunglasses that I had transformed into specs, they will definitely get some wear this season. What is your favourite evo product and why? The product we use the most in the salon would have to be love touch shine spray – it is literally the icing on the cake for finishing any client’s hair. neonbeauty.com.au @neon_beauty /NeonBeautyExtensions Why would you recommend being part of the Prestige Partners program? Since becoming a Prestige Partner our salon staff feel a part of a nationwide family who cares about the success of each salon they work with. HCA has provided us with confidence in the products they offer with an exceptional education program and has allowed us to network with other like-minded hair stylists and business owners, keeping us connected and up-to-date with the industry. The brainchild of Prestige Partner creator, Ward Gauvin, the Business Summit is a conference offered to members of HCA's Prestige Partners program designed to provide practical strategies to help businesses grow. The two-day event was held in the unique, creative setting of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), 12km out of Hobart – a venue that showcases the largest private art collection in Australia. A perfect blend of wine, food, art and business, the weekend signified the ultimate sensory experience. The industry-leading line-up included social media specialist, Troy Townsend of Tiger Pistol, Marketing Consultant Amanda Stevens, plane-crash survivor Allana Corbin and Leesa Smith of Beehive Creative. Supporting these inspiring speakers was an expert panel consisting of Haircare Australia’s Creative Director Lauren McCowan, Lorna Evans, Paul Dare of Dare Hair and Belinda and Carl Keeley from Chumba Hair Concepts & Salon. Amanda Steven’s presentation on strategies for doubling salon retail results proved to be one of the most talked about aspects of the Summit, alongside Troy Townsend, co-founder of Tiger Pistol’s session on equipping small businesses with the tools to make big noise in the social media space. Not to mention the inspiring Allana Corbin delivering a message of pure strength whilst the expert panel ignited thought and passion for the industry as a whole. No conference is complete however, without the chance to mix with like-minded individuals that share a common interest. Our Prestige Partners were treated to a private guided tour of MONA, an intimate wine tasting at underground winery, Moorilla, followed by a cocktail dinner party at Franklin restaurant; complete with a private showing of ‘The Shadows Calling’ exhibition by Patricia Piccinini and Peter Hennessey. EVENT “The whole thing was so well put together. What an amazing experience. We are so thrilled to be a part of the Haircare family. The best part was meeting and mingling with so many other successful salon owners that were all happy to share their experiences and knowledge.” Some of the biggest news from the Summit this year was the announcement that Haircare Australia founders Jan and Geoff Gauvin were celebrating 40 years in business. At a formal dinner held at the Henry Jones Hotel, Jan and Geoff were presented with a certificate to mark the momentous occasion by the Premier of Tasmania. A chance for all to reflect on how far the hairdressing industry has come and the Gauvin family's contribution. "The boys are taking HCA to another dimension. The accolades belong to them, they are Haircare. It's Brad, Garth and Ward. We're just on the side now - it's not us, it's them" says Jan upon recieving their award. The perfect end to what had been an insightful couple of days, our Prestige Partners left the weekend feeling inspired and reminded that they belong to a truly rewarding industry full of like-minded and passionate people, and what's more, part of the Haircare Australia family. Haircare Australia’s Prestige Partner’s program is one driven by partnership and a commitment to growing salon business. With some new and improved business tools on the horizon, the Prestige Partners program in 2016 is sure to be the biggest yet. For further information about joining this exclusive program please contact 1300 437 436. HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA 13 F E AT U R E SALON STUDIO B HAIR DESIGN CRONULL A FOCUSED ON PROVIDING AN UNRIVELLED SERVICE, STUDIO B TAKES INSPIRATION FROM THEIR HAIRDESSING PEERS AND KEEPS ABREAST OF THE CURRENT COLOUR AND STYLING TRENDS. S tudio B is the ultimate success story of young hairdressers, turning dreams into a reality. Co-owners Brooke and Amanda partnered with mutual passion for the beauty industry and a collective vision to build a sustainable successful salon business whilst raising young families. Together, the coowners complement each other; with Brooke driving the creative team and Amanda focused on business management and marketing. The team at Studio B work out of a new sleek, modern boutique salon located in the beachside suburb of Sydney’s south. What do you love to do most in salon? We are a colour studio, we live and breathe colour and are obsessed with anything new and on trend. Most of our colour work tends to be balayage and we do a lot of painted hair techniques, being located in a beach suburb our clients love to be blonde and natural looking. What is the one piece of advice you always give your clients? Colour is upkeep, blonde is maintenance. Don't expect that after a few months your hair colour won't change (even for a balayage). You need to come in at least every 4-6 weeks for a fresh toner and make sure you use proper homecare. 14 HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA What is your big hair trend prediction for summer 2015? Multidimensional, iridescent colour and loads of pastels. Hairstyles will be much longer this season with soft long layers and the "lived in" look will be just as big. What is your favourite Lakmé product and why? 0/00! We literally cannot keep enough of this product in our salon. If you haven't played with this product (comes in gloss and collage) you are missing out on some serious hair magic. We have found so many uses for it: removing colour build up, cleaning out old brassy blondes, blending out any harsh lines when hair painting, balayage and removing bright vivid colours. Too often it's tempting to reach for bleach, this product in many cases alleviates that need. Being a Prestige Partner salon, why would you recommend the initiative? The program has a holistic approach which is great. Our HCA rep Fati is so accommodating which has meant that our business is performing better than ever. The support from education both in-salon (Billy is incredible) and from brand educators, along with the exclusivity of the luxe brands we stock are why we love being connected to the Haircare family. studiobhair.com.au @studiobhairdesigns /StudioBHairDesign STEP BY STEP GET THE LOOK 1 tarting with clean hair, apply Moroccanoil Root S Boost directly to the roots and comb through. It has boosted our social media profile and brand awareness. Traffic to our website had a huge increase while our goals and targets for online bookings increased beyond our expectation. Social media is a powerful tool for brand awareness and being a busy salon, it’s one area that is really difficult to consistently be on top off. HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA 29 F E AT U R E PRODUCT TRACEY CUNNINGHAM talks SINCE LAUNCHING IN AUSTRALIA ONLY A FEW SHORT MONTHS AGO, THE UNIQUE CHEMISTRY HAS MADE ITS MARK AS ONE OF THE MOST INTEGRAL ITEMS IN EVERY SAVVY HAIRDRESSERS ARSENAL. A true Olaplex advocate, Tracey Cunningham is no stranger to voicing her love of the single ingredient she dubs her “super power”. Taking time away from the likes of J-Lo, Drew Barrymore and Khloe Kardashian, Tracey recently visited Australia, touring the country with us to share her Olaplex story. Why do you think the hairdressing industry has been so welcoming of Olaplex? The dramatic results. It changes nothing when colouring, but changes everything at the same time. It gives people superpowers to do things they could never do without Olaplex. Hairdressers are always asking about new things and the latest crazes. Olaplex isn’t just a craze, it gives immediate real results. It’s insurance and protection for salon work, and that’s why the industry is rallying behind it. What do you love about Olaplex? Every single thing about it. You can use any form of colour or bleach and Olaplex still provides the same amazing results. You can use Olaplex as a pre-colour-treatment, during a chemical or colour service or simply as a stand-alone treatment. As hairdressers, we finally have the protection we’ve always been looking for. Who should be using Olaplex? Any client that walks through the door. Virgin, compromised or chemically treated, Olaplex can help! It’s even great for people that have curly hair that have lost elasticity due to thermal or chemical damage. Olaplex softens and smoothes hairs texture, so it’s perfect for women going grey as well. Which celebrity hair should we draw inspiration from this season? I specialise in natural wearable colour, brunettes, blondes and redheads – they’re great for every season. One of my clients, Lily Aldridge has one of the most requested ombré looks. Her colour has really opened the door for brunettes. Balayage ends give brunettes bright pieces to frame their face and haircut while dark roots allow for minimal maintenance without stripy highlights popping out at the roots. Bryce Dallas Howard provides great inspiration for anyone looking to go red. She’s a natural red-head so I tend to just top up her colour with a few baby lights to soften the look. Charlize Theron is also a great go-to blonde. I find that less is more when highlighting, so I always pick up the same pieces to maintain the dimension and prevent the hair from going too blonde. What recommendations should a colourist be making when creating these types of look? Always do a partial highlight from the root and apply a gloss to soften highlights at the scalp to give a more natural look, of course using Olaplex during lightening. Clients should always be sent home with Olaplex No. 3 to keep the hair in the best possible condition. What are the top three things you should be discussing with your clients when they go lighter? 1. Be clear on how long it will take to reach their desired shade depending on the colour and condition of the hair. 2. Always discuss which shades of blonde will best suit their complexion. 3. Talk about the maintenance regime, make sure they understand how to upkeep the look. Follow Olaplex updates at @olaplexau #olaplexau 30 HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA BEFORE AFTER What was the inspiration for Sam’s look? Sam’s hair needed a little TLC. She has super fine hair and I know with all her modelling they use a lot of heated styling tools on her. We started with a complete Olaplex treatment to repair existing damage and give us the best possible foundation to work from. Then I lightened the hair around her face. This look accentuates her youthful complexion and gives a rich manageable depth to her shorter hair. AFTER BEFORE What were your biggest considerations when transforming Jodi’s hair? When using Olaplex there really are no concerns. Working with girls at my LA salon that have very similar hair to Jodi made her lightening a no brainer. Olaplex acts like insurance, I don’t have to worry about damaging her hair when we lighten. As soon as I saw her and talked with her on what I felt would work, she just enjoyed the transformation. Even during a Sydney winter, the subtle lightness of her hair keeps that warm seasonal feeling. I see her going even lighter this summer. We sat down with fabuloso pro’s International Educator, Jay Kownacki to give us the low-down on this utterly fabuloso system. 1 4 Tell us a little about the fabuloso pro colour refresh and maintenance system... fabuloso pro is an amazing colour concept that allows you to refresh clients hair in-between full colour services and provide clients with a perfectly matched, personalised colour maintenance conditioner. What is your favourite aspect of the system? My favourite aspect is the retail side of the system. Being able to send every permanent and demi permanent colour client home with a perfectly matched colour maintenance conditioner ensures the longevity of the clients hair and its condition. 2 5 Why would you recommend a salon implement this system? The system itself allows you to offer new, unique services into your salon and creates client loyalty through customised retail. Tell us a little about shine temptress. Temptress is a 3-in-1 treatment. It strengthens the hair, moisturising it internally giving back the hair elasticity and manageability, and seals and smooths the cuticle locking in the colour and resulting in a glass like finish. 3 6 What makes fabuloso pro different? There is nothing like fabuloso pro on the market. The ability to create endless semi permanent colours and customised maintenance conditioners for your clients is limited only by your imagination. How do the new shampoos fit into the range? Prime and preserve, the fabuloso pro shampoos, have been specifically formulated to work with the unique technology in the colour and ensure the best possible results. Prime preps the hair for maximum colour deposit and Preserve gently cleanses the hair ensuring that the colour lasts as long as possible. HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA 33 F E AT U R E EVENT RECOGNISED FOR THEIR EXEMPLARY BARBERING SKILLS, WORLD-FAMOUS BARBERSHOP AND UNRIVALLED RANGE OF POMADES, SCHOREM BARBERS, LEEN AND BERTUS HAVE SHAPED THE FACE OF MODERN-DAY BARBERING AND HAVE STOPPED AT NOTHING TO SHARE THEIR PASSION AND LOVE OF THE INDUSTRY WITH AUSTRALIA. Presented by: Leen & Bertus (Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier) Photography: Jelle Mollema F rom the heart of Rotterdam, Scumbag barbers Leen and Bertus hit Australian shores to bring us their Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour. In a two-week long tour of Australia and New Zealand, the barbers shared their somewhat unconventional yet amazingly brilliant approach to all things business and barbering. While providing us with an insight into their world, we shared a bit of good old Aussie culture and gave them an insight into our flourishing barbering scene. Kicking things off with a bang, we took the renowned barbers on a tour of Melbourne’s top barbershops in a bid to showcase the different styles of barbering; the standard of which left even these great barbers humbled. Throughout the tour, Leen and Bertus visited many barbershops, giving them the ability to experience the Australian barber culture first hand and see how the Schorem and Reuzel legacy is extending across the globe. » HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA 35 Amongst parties, brewery visits, sightseeing, tattoos and barber battles, the Schorem Boys put on four impressive live shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland. With four incredible venues and performances, each audience was given an insight into the spirt of barbering according to Leen and Bertus. An eclectic mix of classic style and boyish banter, there were no better people to depict such an interesting tale. Taking it back, the boys, mainly Bertus, the chattier of the two, gave us glimpse into what life is really like at Schorem. From chewing the fat with clients to the intricate detailing that went into the creation of Schorem, there was no stone left unturned. From the outset, we were told that the shows weren't about the haircuts and any talk of ‘hair shows’ was forbidden. Leen and Bertus are firm believers that what they do isn’t worthy of a show, all they want to do is share their story and passion for providing men with a place to escape, a place that brings back the essence of being social. The most basic ideal portrayed throughout the shows was that good old fashioned conversation needs to be at the heart of every barbershop. “Everyone these days is on social media, but to me that’s anti-social. Sure, people come to us for a haircut but it's social interaction they need” claims Bertus. If it’s social interaction you’re looking for then Bertus is your man. The self-proclaimed ‘creative one’ immerses himself into chatting with his clients, and in the case of the Cute and Cuddly Creatures Tour, audiences of 200 plus. While Leen powers through a number of cuts on stage, amidst the jokes and storytelling Bertus is able to complete one. It’s clear to see who the businessman in the relationship is, making a truly perfect pairing. » 36 HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA With the help of a few carefully placed props, a few beers and the hilarious improvisation from the Scumbags themselves, the audiences were given the chance to experience that famous Rotterdam barbershop for themselves. Everything about the shows exuded authenticity, in the same way their carefully created shop and range of pomades do. In a room full of hairdressers and barbers alike, inspiration was rife, if not from the cutting, then from the passion that brought Schorem to fruition. The inspiration of building success from something you love. The word Schorem roughly translates to ‘assholes’ in Dutch, yet the dedication and professionalism this dynamic duo show is more genius than ‘asshole’-like. Leen and Bertus are the first to admit that they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but they embrace it. Their mission is to be the most authentic versions of themselves and hope that they inspire at least one person to follow their passion and love what they do. A mission that they have proven to be hugely successful in so far. @reuzel @schorembarbier #schoremlive #pigsontour HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA 37 F E AT U R E ARTIST 15 MINUTES WITH JULIE ISOBE EVO’S INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION DIRECTOR AND ADMIRED HAIRDRESSING SUPER STAR TALKS ABOUT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM EVO IN THE COMING MONTHS AND THAT ONE TIME IN IBIZA…. Where did it all start for you? What made you become a hairdresser? I’m a born hairdresser! It’s all I ever wanted to do. I used to throw tantrums at age 5 as I would take ‘looks’ into the salon and make them cut my hair a certain way - I had a Lady Di hair cut at age 5. I would beg my mum to leave me in the salon to sweep hair when she went grocery shopping. I was a Saturday girl at 12 ½ years of age. What drives your passion for hairdressing? I have passion because I believe. I believe this is the greatest industry in the world – we can do so much and touch so many people. I believe in hairdressers, it’s a hard unglamorous job, we touch all walks of life and come from all walks of life, we are day makers, and we help people see beauty. It’s easy to have passion when you have a strong belief. What have been some of your career highlights? First and foremost being blessed enough to travel and work all over the world which has allowed me to see the difference in hairdressing in every country. What is your favourite thing about the hair industry? The hairdressers. We are many and we are one. We are different tribes. We walk in all kinds of shoes and are strong and have opinions. We can spot each other in the grocery store. What do you love about evo? The list is too long. Truth, beauty and justice – it’s freeing. I’ve been a part of the development of many products and I have to say that evo products are the best I have ever used. The humour in the marketing and because we do tell the truth and are not into gimmicks; along with the passion of the family. What can we expect to see from you in the New Year? It’s a very exciting time for evo. Grant (Norton) has done a great job with the education program to date. It’s exciting to be able to build from what was already created. You will see big changes to evo education classes, totally different content that’s taught in a more interactive way. And a new range for evo, ssshh! The rest you will have to wait and see… 38 HAIRCARE AUSTRALIA "I believe this is the greatest industry in the world" What is your big hair trend prediction for summer 2015? Product. Gel specifically, it's coming back strong. Used for a more sophisticated wet look and on purpose hair. Hair that's been ‘done’ but just slightly. People are using more tools. What don’t we know about you? I used to be a gogo dancer in Ibiza in summer 1996. What 3 things would you take to a desert island and why? Does it have wifi? If it has wifi a smart phone. Gotta keep connected. evo bubbles (pink) they make me happy and smell great; and my family because I can face anything when I have my man beside me. If I can’t have my phone it would have to be SPF100. What’s the worst hairstyle you’ve ever had? Honestly I don’t think at the time of the hairstyle I’ve ever had a bad one - but looking back? Frosted 80’s hair with a huge fringe… or that time I was blonde on top and red at the nape. Where is your favourite place to travel? Home… ahhh. I love Asia. Anything and anywhere. I actually think I am Asian. I married one and grew one inside my tummy, that makes me Asian. I love how you can smell Asia when you fly into any country. HOLLANDS FINEST POMADE Designed to do exactly what the tin says, Reuzel’s quartet is the perfect pomade compliment to any barbershop. I n an industry so focused on supporting traditions, Reuzel sits at the helm with its cult-like following. Maintaining it’s old school charm and iconic character Reuzel has earned it’s place on every barbershop shelf. Reuzel was born as the result of Schorem Haarsnijder En Barbier founders, Leen and Bertus creating their own pomades after their globally sourced, niche pomades became increasingly harder to source. The pair needed a product that would stand the test of time, just as the classic cuts they create every day do. Something to complement their work and preserve the traditionalisms that run through the Schorem blood. Digging deep into the history of pomades, Reuzel came to be as a big fat wink to the days when barbersurgeons were using pomades made out of animal fat to close wounds after bloodletting and amputations. Once scented with apples to masque the smells of animal fats and blood, Reuzel has carried on tradition with the subtle hints of apple throughout the range. This once putrid combination of apples and pig fat are what has shaped the pomades that we all know and love today. These impeccable quality pomades are now a four strong offering with the addition of the Pink, a heavy-hold counterpart of the Green and the Blue, the strong-hold of the Red. The new pink pomade is a wax and oil based pomade that smooths, provides a medium shine and flawless heavy hold. It’s the perfect pomade for creating barbering classics like pompadours, quiffs, contours as well as the latest fashion textures. Suitable for normal to think hair, Reuzel Pink provides a heavy, strong hold that completely transforms hair, making it easy to mould into any shape. In keeping with tradition, the Pink is scented with signature pomme fragrance with a hint of salsa. Reuzel Pomade in the Blue can is packed with high shine and strong hold, it’s a water soluble pomade that holds like a heavy wax yet rinses out as easily as a gel. This super concentrated pomade works on any hair thickness or texture and creates a polished look for any hair style. From high pompadours and quiffs to tight slick backs, Reuzel Pomade Blue can handle it all. Reuzel Pomade Blue retains its pliability in the hair throughout the day and never hardens or flakes and is perfectly blended with a subtle warm vanilla wood. Once only available at Schorem, the Green, Red, Pink and Blue are now available to discerning gentlemen and crazy scumbags worldwide.
