In the local film annals, 2008 may be registered as significant as it was the year
that the Philippines made it back to Cannes after 24 years. Festival des Cannes
is, of course, the most prestigious of the world’s leading filmfests and the entry
to main competition of Brillante Mendoza’s Serbis was a major feat not to
be taken for granted. Prior to Serbis, there were only two instances that the
Philippines qualified for the main competition at Cannes: in 1980 with Jaguar
and in 1984 with Kapit sa Patalim. Behind both films was the late master
director Lino Brocka.
Serbis was just one of the year’s 36 standard releases easily outnumbered
by a flood of digital features, all with full theatrical run and no less limited
to those produced for Cinemalaya, Cinemanila Digital Lokal and Cinema One
competitions. e quantity, however, of the digital features was no indication of
their lucrative viability. e profitable ventures of the year were still confined to
the staple fare from the studios propelled by network television in manifestation
of the entertainment industry trend that may take an entire era to reverse.
Proving the point was Star Cinema as the most prolific production outfit
in the land with a total output of eight releases as challenged by nearest rival
Regal Entertainment with seven. e usual genres made their presence felt,

with comedy topping the list. Providing somewhat a breath of fresh air was the
entry of two animated features that must have proved a novelty in themselves.
Apart from the Cannes stamp, Serbis held another distinction as the only
one of the year’s regular releases to be slapped with an R rating by the Movie and
Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). Apparently, mainstream
producers had gunned for general patronage and shunned risks entailed by
sensitive material in the hope of a guaranteed return of investment.
It was the opposite case for digital features, especially with the proliferation
of gay-oriented titles catering to a dominant niche in the movie-going
population. All these instantly got Rs and practically, digital filmmaking in the
country came to be equated with them. e year closed with the 34th Metro
Manila Film Festival with a curious selection of eight entries all exuding the
temperament and sensibility that an accomplished film like Serbis precisely
sought to depart from and vanquish for all intents and purposes.
For this filmography, each entry contains: 1) the title of the film; 2) genre,
running time (in hours and minutes), MTRCB classification; 3) short synopsis;
and 4) production data. Abbreviations for the latter are: P = Production
Company, D = Director, ST = Story, OST = Original Story, SP = Screenplay, A
= Actors, PD = Production Design, C = Cinematography, DOP = Director of
Photography, E = Editor, M = Music, S = Sound, TS = eme Song, and OTS =
Original eme Song.
