All proceeds will be donated by Akerson to Habitat for Humanity Detroit and its efforts to rebuild the Morningside Commons neighborhood located just east of GM’s Renaissance Center world headquarters in downtown Detroit. “The 1958 Corvette is pure American ingenuity and creativity and the free spirit that Chevrolet represents to me. I love the car – but I think it’s probably better purposed somewhere else,” Akerson said. “The need for Habitat for Humanity is so great that I thought, ‘Wow, maybe I could really make a difference in a whole different way.” The 1958 Corvette featured a 245-horsepower V-8 and included new body and instrument panels and new upholstery. External highlights included dual headlamps – a Corvette first – and twin chrome trunk spears. Chevrolet built 9,168 Corvettes for the 1958 model year, but only 510, or just over 5 percent, were painted Regal Turquoise. Akerson’s Corvette is a hardtop convertible and is considered scarce among remaining 1958 models. Learn more on the Barrett-Jackson website here. From Your National Corvette Museum Ambassador C6.R Makes Pit Stop in Bowling Green Today the Corvette Racing #4 hauler stopped by the NCM. Dave James is the driver of the truck and a pit crew member. “I could fly to races but I don’t like flying that much. Besides, this is a nice truck to get to drive and the fan reactions that I get along the way are always fun.” He’s been with Corvette Racing since 2000 and can’t hide the smile when he thinks back on his life so far. “Getting to go to France is great, and every time I step out onto the track there it still gives me chills. Being a part of the team that wins the greatest race on earth—there’s no feeling like it.” He was impressed with the Museum, and despite being a part of the Corvette story he was surprised by how much he learned along the way. “I found myself in the Corvette Racing exhibit!” Dave was on his way back from testing in Austin, Texas, at the Circuit of the Americas when he stopped by the NCM. “A good thing about adding Texas to the schedule,” he says with a grin, “is that the National Corvette Museum and the Assembly Plant are on the way home. We’ll get a chance to stop by more often now.” Another excuse to come here will be the NCM Motorsports Park. “That’s exciting. I can’t wait until it is done. It’s not that far from us, and having a track here to test on with all of the major turns from all of the major tracks we race at will be great for the team and great for the fans who want to come out and watch. That is going to be a real draw and a lot of fun.” NCM 20th Anniversary Celebration and National Corvette Caravan Registration Labor Day weekend 2014 marks a major milestone in Corvette and Museum history; Corvette, the longest running single marque, is in its 7th generation and the Museum, a member driven organization, celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Grand Opening. In keeping with tradition, which is one of the hallmarks of the Corvette world, the kick-off to the celebration starts with thousands of Corvette enthusiasts from all over the world making their way to Bowling Green, Kentucky in evergrowing caravans converging on the home of Corvette for 3+ days of exciting Corvette lifestyle. Although months away from finalizing the on-site activities, planning for the National Corvette Caravan has been underway for several years. In one significant change from the past there will be only a single registration for both the 20th Anniversary Celebration and the National Corvette Caravan. Base registration is for the on-site event and there are options to add your Caravan selection, the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, event shirt and, for Lifetime members, the Lifetime/VIP dinner. See more regarding National Corvette Caravan at http://www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com/ As activities are finalized and an agenda created updates will be posted to this page and announcements will appear in eNews and on Caravan Chat. eNews: http://www.corvettemuseum.org/ncmenews/index.shtml and Caravan Chat: http://maillist.corvettemuseum.com/cgi-bin/wa.exe? But will the handling and performance of the seventh-generation 2014 ChevroletCorvette, plus the improved interior and redesigned exterior, make for a substantial upgrade over the outgoing--and very capable--car? The shape of the C7, as well as its return to the Stingray sub-title, hint at the past of the Corvette, bringing the best of its formative years into modern focus. Free of any played-out retro feel, while paying homage to its own history, the 2014 Corvette has managed a subtle balance--with not-so -subtle design cues. The round tail lights are gone, replaced with a set that's more reminiscent of the Camaro; the hood is vented and finned. The rear fenders flow into the rear bumper with almost supercar-like vertical details. There's a lot going on all over the car--and fortunately, most of it works. The profile still looks a lot like the last-generation C6 Corvette, though the rear of the car is much more of a fastback shape, and wit the sum of the new details, the result is a completely new look. Materials have been significantly upgraded over the previous Corvette, which basically required an upgrade to the optional leather package to be adequate. Now, the standard package is much more detailed, and build quality is noticeably improved--leather-wrapped surfaces and high-quality plastics abound. An advanced instrument cluster provides a high-tech feel for the driver's view, and improvements to the technology and infotainment features bring the Corvette fully into the modern era, placing it on equal footing with rivals from Germany and Japan, as well as its American competition, the SRT Viper. A large and thoroughly modern infotainment display is mounted in the driver-focused center stack, the instrument panel has its own display, and the angular, stylized look of the exterior is reflected in the shapes of the dash, the controls, and other aspects of the cabin. A multi-function steering wheel puts the controls at the driver's finger tips, without getting in the way of the thick, sculpted rim. Under the hood of this Corvette Stingray launch model is the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 enginewe've known about for several months now: at a base of 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, even the "standard" Corvette will be a serious contender for fast lap times; stepping up the range just adds to the dynamic impact. Sam Houston Corvette Club Volume 1 Issue 11 JANUARY 2013 S.H.I.I.P. SAM HOUSTON INDIVIDUAL INCENTIVE POINTS AWARDS PROGRAM A point system to stimulate attendance and participation from the entire club has been adopted by the board and goes into effect immediately upon the start of the August 3, 2012 meeting and will run until June 30, 2013 just before our 20 th anniversary as a club in July. Listed below are the categories and point values for each. At the end of the program all members’ in good standing will have their points tallied and the persons with the top three most points will be awarded prizes. The grand prize is a SHCC club jacket currently valued at $75.00. Second place is a SHCC voucher for club apparel valued at $50.00. Third prize is a free entry into one of the SHCC car shows. The board members and their spouses are not eligible for the prizes mentioned above but are compiling the same points to compete among themselves to win a $25.00 gift certificate at a local restaurant. It is of the opinion that board members and/or their spouses may have an unfair advantage by attending most all events and this program is intended to help promote other club members to get involved more. Point system values for attendance and participation are as follows: Attend Monthly Meeting = 1 point Attend SHCC Monthly Drive = 2 points SHCC Event Participation = 3 points (i.e.; Xmas party, bowling, Halloween party etc.) SHCC Car Show Participant = 4 points (i.e. worker) SHCC Pre-Run Participant = 5 points (wild flower & fall foliage only) SHCC Car Show Participant WITH Car Entry = 7 Head Up a SHCC Event or Drive = 10 points Please note there may be from time to time BONUS Points awarded but it will be announced in advance so everyone will have fair notice to attend.
