SPRING 2011
Furr Ball Unleashed!
The Forsyth Humane Society is
celebrating 70 years of serving
Forsyth County with our first annual signature event, Furr Ball Unleashed! at the Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem,
on Saturday, November 12, 2011,
from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Don’t forget
to mark your calendars and bring
your friends and family!
Pacina
Hi, I’m Pacina! My pals and I were
surrendered because of financial reasons.
Combining the best of our past
fundraisers Art Unleashed! and
Furr Ball, our platinum celebration will be a fun evening of dinner, dancing and entertainment,
which will include live music by
Doug Davis & the Mystery Dates
and The Plaids. Emmy and Golden
Globe actress nominee and winner Rosemary Harris will be the honorary chairman and will host a special VIP
cocktail reception before dinner for those interested in visiting with her and
having a souvenir picture taken.
When I first came to the FHS, I was very shy
because I did not grow up around people.
Now, I love people! They take me on walks,
feed me and give me lots of love! I would
love a big fenced-in yard to play in and a
family that shows me lots of love and attention!
A live and silent auction will feature both a large and a small dog statue and a
large and a small cat statue, designed and decorated by the winning artist, as
well as some other wonderful one-of-a-kind items. An array of other special offerings will include memorabilia from such famous celebrities as Betty White,
art from national and local artisans, jewelry, personal services, and gifts for
yourself or to purchase just in time for holiday giving.

President’s Letter
How do you say goodbye to one of your best friends? How do you adjust to the hole in your life that is
left behind after your faithful companion has passed away? I certainly don’t have the answer, and I
imagine the answer is different for each person.
What I do know, though, is that a donation to FHS, in loving memory of that beloved pet, somehow
eases the pain of loss—if even just a little bit. There is something therapeutic about it. It helps to
know that the joy your side-kick brought into your life will live on through the work of FHS, and will
fill others’ homes as they welcome their new companion into their lives and their hearts.
My family’s lab, Bailey, recently crossed the rainbow bridge, and even though he lived a long life, full
of love and affection, his absence has still left a hole in our lives and an ache in our hearts. Bailey’s
passing has helped me, though, to pause, to take a few moments out of my fast-paced life, to reflect
on the evolution of this fine organization.

We have always had a relatively small staff, working out of a tiny building. As our staff and, fortunately, volunteer base, continues to grow commensurate with the needs of the community, we have
not forgotten our roots. On the contrary, we embrace our roots as the solid foundation upon which
to grow and expand into a new facility in the future. We are incredibly grateful for the thousands of
volunteers and donors who have supported FHS for the past 70 years. Each one of you is an integral
part of our history and, I hope, our future.

Colleen Byers, President
Furr Ball Unleashed! will raise funds and awareness for animals who are homeless, neglected and
in need, and will support the FHS no-kill Adoption Center, Educational Outreach Programs, Sick and
Injured Animal Fund, and Low-cost Spay/Neuter Voucher Assistance Program. By supporting Furr
Ball Unleashed! you can help end animal overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership in
Forsyth County.
This event will only be possible through the community support we receive from friends like you. We
would appreciate your help in continuing Forsyth Humane Society’s mission as a sponsor of Furr Ball
Unleashed! Your gift will allow us to continue to provide for the welfare of homeless animals, provide
a voice through advocacy and education, and give a second chance to both humans and animals.
For information on sponsorships, tickets, and details for the event please call Darla Kirkeeng at 336546-1364, or visit us online at www.forsythhumane.org.
We look forward to seeing you there!

After I became disabled, I decided to offer my time to
volunteer at the Humane Society. Houdini, now “Dino,”
was dropped off in Ardmore with his leash attached but
no tags or microchip. The Humane Society took him in
thinking the owners would show up to rescue their Akita.
Weeks passed and Dino was still at the kennel.
I was asked to foster him because Dino needed space and
socialization. We bonded right away. He was intelligent,
funny, beautiful, and serious when needed. He became
my special friend since I moved back to my apartment,
and our relationship continues to grow. Then the best gift
was given to me. Someone whose heart was generous,
someone I may not meet, changed my life. The appreciation I feel is hard to explain, but if you see us walking in
Ardmore, you will witness our love.

Executive Director’s Letter
For as long as I can remember I have always loved spring. Longer
days and warmer weather have always pushed me out the door.
Those short walks with my dogs each day gladly become extended journeys through the neighborhood. These journeys allow me
the opportunity to talk to old friends and meet new neighbors. It’s
also a great time to bond with the family. I fondly remember long
walks with my family as a child; I hope my kids have the same fond
memories.
Our two family dogs, Bailey (15 year old lab mix) and Lucy (7 year
old basset mix) always provide the entertainment. Both girls love
to walk, but as the years add up for Bailey and I think Lucy is just
sympathetically lazy, we’re required to make several rest breaks.
What used to be brisk 5 mile runs with Bailey have been replaced
by very slow walks with several rests and maybe even a nap thrown
in, if I start talking to someone too long. I’ve met more people in the
neighborhood through these “rest” breaks than through any of our
many neighborhood social events.
Mardene Morykwas
The Forsyth Humane Society was deeply saddened to
learn of the passing of Mrs. Michael J. (Mardene) Morykwas
The bond between a family and their dog(s) can really be an amazing thing. Our daily walks solidify this bond for our family. It also
provides priceless opportunities to just hang out with our kids and
simply walk and talk. One of the highlights of my job now is when
I see a family find that perfect pet. The excitement in a child's eyes
never gets old, to them a new family dog or cat is a huge deal. I like
to think our adoptions start new family traditions that will mean as
much to these families as our long, lazy walks means to my family.

raised significant money for the Forsyth Humane Society, including funds that assisted low-income residents
with spay/neuter vouchers and assistance with sick or
injured pets. Her passion for animal welfare has helped
thousands of Forsyth County residents and their pets,
and continues to do so today.
In appreciation of Mardene’s devotion to animals and
passion for helping others, The Forsyth Humane Society named our current adoption center, at 61 Miller

Mardene’s continual support and generosity will leave
a lasting legacy.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Dr.

Mardene will be greatly missed by many.

great care of me. After I got all my vaccines and a thorough check-up, I
was ready to come to the FHS. Now I’m just waiting to find my forever
home! I would prefer to be the only pet in my new family’s household
because I hate to share the spotlight! I am sweet, fun, and would love
for you to take me home!

Aster
Alex Prior writes: It was very nice to meet you a few weeks ago when we picked up Marilyn. Wanted to give you a bit of an update: We’ve decided to name her Aster, and she is a really
sweet pup. It’s clear that the volunteers at the shelter or the family she was with before going to
the shelter spent some time with her—she’s a happy and healthy pup and has been a charm to
train. She’s very good with housebreaking, easy to kennel, knows sit, shake and just loves to play.
Thanks for all your organization does, and for giving us a very loving addition to our family.

Suzie
Tammy Reilly writes: Suzie is doing great and is very happy with us. She loves playing with our
kids and going for runs/walks with me. She has made a lot of progress in the past two weeks…
she used to not want to walk very much because she was scared of the cars in the neighborhood.
But now she is comfortable walking with us. She is still afraid of men but has been adjusting and
going up to my husband more and more. Suzie has even gone hiking in Pilot Mountain with us.

Cali
Anna West writes: This is the proud and happy new owner of Clover the calico kitten, who we have decided to call Cali. She is
doing very well here at my apartment, and she seems very content and happy to be living here with us. Her health is also very
good: She is eating well and drinking plenty of water, and she takes a lot of catnaps. She is such a joy in our lives and we are very
happy to have her as a new addition to the family! She just purrs and purrs when she is around my spouse and me and shows us
so much love! Thank you staff and volunteers at Forsyth Humane Society. Rocco
Brenda Whitehead writes: Oliver's name has been changed to Rocco. He is doing great. House
training is going well. He weighs 26 pounds now! I forwarded you a picture of his graduation from

addition to our family.

everyday. We really appreciate all of the Forsyth Humane Society's compassionate employees and

Grozz
Kevin writes: It has been a wonderful week, and I am amazed that I never did this sooner—of
course if I had I would never have met the little fella that has captured my heart. He is a bundle
of joy that has done wonders for my life. I knew going into it that there would be some major
changes in my routine and priorities, but those changes have been so minor compared to the
wonderful things he has brought into my home.
I was alone—never really lonely—but that has changed, and being greeted at the door with his
adorable face and excitement for seeing me again has truly filled a void that I really didn't know
was there.

Kaiser
Harry Payne writes: Kaiser is doing very well, and we are proud of his development. He is one
week away from graduating from his obedience training and will finish at the top of his class.
Also, he is all caught up on his vaccinations, and is receiving preventive medication for heartworms. He is still growing rapidly, but most importantly, he is maturing. He is phenomenal in his
demeanor towards people and other dogs. Everyone loves him at first sight, and he responds by
licking their hand and lying on his back to get a belly scratch. Thank you, again, for making this
all possible.

Jarrett Oliveri writes: Calvin and Beatrice are doing fantastic! They loving running throughout the
house playing hide and seek. Calvin devours his food like a he’s training for an eating contest...
FAST! He’s always the first to crawl in my lap after a long day of wrestling with his sister. Beatrice
is the calm and collected one but isn’t afraid to make her voice heard, literally! They both love
their vast array of toys, especially the squeaky ones! Everyone that sees the two of them falls
head-over-heels in love and wants to take them home.

Crate training and housebreaking is making progress daily. In fact, Beatrice has already learned
to run to the door when it’s time to potty. So far they both know sit, stay, off and come, and both
received a clean bill of health from the vet last week! I’ve attached some pictures for you to share
with everyone. Thanks again for making this adoption possible.

One Lucky Lady
In 2005, a man approached the Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) with
three puppies he found on his property. After signing over the puppies, they were given new names to start off their new life; one of
which was named Priscilla. She was so adorable that Priscilla was
put on the FHS brochure, and her cute face was known amongst the
FHS community. In the mean time, dog trainer Crystal Smith was
looking for a new puppy to add to her household. Smith visited the
FHS, saw Priscilla, and immediately knew Priscilla was the dog for
her. When Smith took Priscilla home, she gave the puppy a new
name: Jen’s Lady in Black Pearls, or Lady for short.
Smith has grown up with pedigree dogs for a majority of her life.
Her father raised British Labrador Retrievers and her grandfather
bred American Kennel Club (AKC) certified Boston Terriers. When
Smith brought Lady home, Smiths’ other rescue dog, Kara, welcomed her with open paws. Kara’s full name is: Kara White Paws
of Cherokee, TDIA, CGC; “TDIA” stands for “Therapy Dogs International Active.” Kara has her therapy dog license and is laid back and
nurturing; which makes her a perfect role model for a growing pup.
Lady was housebroken in record time and did not teethe as much
as a normal puppy. When Lady was 3-4 months old, Smith enrolled
her in the Beginner 1 class at the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club
(WSDTC). After completing the Beginner 1 class, Lady moved on to
the Beginner 2 class. At 17 months of age, Lady injured her hind leg;
Smith took Lady to the vet, after a few tests the vet concluded Lady
had a Luxating Patella. A Luxating Patella is when the dogs’ kneecap
slides to the inside of the knee in one of the hind legs, which locks
the leg. It is very painful and requires immediate attention in the
form of surgery. Smith got the $2,200 surgery for her beloved Lady;
Lady spent three days in the Intensive Care Unit at the vet, and
three months re-cooperating at home. After re-cooperating, Lady
was re-enrolled into the WSDTC Beginner 2 class and passed with
flying colors.
10
tions is to enroll your dog into the WSDTC training program. They
have many professional dog trainers who are available to teach you
and your dog the skills necessary for competing. In order to help
Lady focus, Smith would receive permission to take Lady into places such as: home improvement warehouses, pet stores, and loud
events with PA systems. While at these places, Smith would practice Lady’s base skills so she would learn to solely focus on Smith
instead of any other distractions that may occur at a competition.
Lady was one lucky pup to be given the opportunity to perform to
her potential. She loves the roar of the crowd, the flash of the cameras, and performing for Smith and the judges. Lady’s next competition will be the Greater Columbia Obedience Club trials May 14-15th
at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds. To learn more about the
Winston-Salem Dog Training Club and how to get your dog enrolled
in their classes, visit their website: wsdtc.org. If you are curious
about the American Kennel Club (AKC) Rallies, Obedience, or Agility qualifications, please visit: http://www.akc.org/. If you are interested in learning more about the Association of Pet Dog Trainers
(APDT), you can visit: http://www.apdt.com/.
Lady went on to receive her AKC Canine Good Citizens Award (CGC).
According to the AKC website, this award is given to any dog who
demonstrates good manners at home and in the community. Smith
explained that Lady has great tracking skills, which made Smith
want to enter her in an advanced tracking class. Out of the number
of other dogs in the class, Lady was one of two dogs to graduate
from the class. By 2008, Smith believed Lady was ready to compete
against other dogs, but the AKC did not allow mixed breed, or All
American, dogs to compete. So, Smith entered Lady in a few competitions offered by the WSDTC and the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). Finally in 2010, the AKC allowed All American dogs to
compete and it was Lady’s time to shine. In her first competition,
Lady scored a 98 out of 100 and placed third; first place scored a
100, and second place scored a 99. Lady received her AKC Canine
Partners Certificate so she could start to compete in the AKC Rally,
Agility, and Obedience trials. Lady was now ready to receive AKC
titles, and started off by receiving her AKC Rally Novice (RN) title.
In order to get this title, Lady had to receive a score of 70 or above in
three different Rally Novice competitions. Currently, Lady is working on getting her AKC and APDT Rally Advanced titles, which is a
step up from the Rally Novice title. The Advanced title involves the
dog taking direction from the handler off the leash versus the Rally
Novice where the dog is on their leash. In all the competitions Lady
has entered, she has never scored lower than an 85 out of 100 and
has always placed either first, second, or third. Now on all her certificates her name reads: Jen’s Lady in Black Pearls, RN, CGC.

On March 22 and 23, BOOKMARKS
and a/perture cinemas hosted the
screening of My Dog Tulip, followed
by a discussion with John Woestendiek moderated by Forsyth Humane
Society. John Woestendiek is a blogger, Pulitzer Prize winner, and the author of Dog, Inc.: The
Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man’s Best Friend, which provides a close look at the first successful commercial cloning
of a canine, Booger—delivered in 2008, along with a slew
of compelling questions about the boundaries of science,
commerce and ethics.
John maintains two blogs: ohmidog! (ohmidog.com) and
Travels with Ace (travelswithace.com). Each of them praises dogs, the relationship between people and their dogs,
dog-friendly travel locations, stories of canine courage, and
even therapy dogs around the country.
What are the secrets to Lady’s success? Smith describes how good
training starts with a solid foundation of base skills. Teaching the
dog to sit, stay, come, and heel are very important base skills and
there are a few different ways to get your dog motivated. Smith explains how Lady’s motivators are toys and animation; animation
requires the owner to use a specific tone in order to get the dog excited. Every dog has a specific motivator and it’s up to the owner to
figure out if a dog is food, toy, or praise motivated. Once these base
skills are in place, all a dog owner has to do is build on these skills.
The best way to get your dog ready for the AKC and ADPT competi-

Leadership Potential
Elementary students’ project benefits FHS
Ask the Vet
The Youth Leadership Council at Forest Park Elementary School,
comprised of twelve students who are student council members
or classroom representatives from third to fifth grade, has been
meeting every week since January 2011 in order to learn about
leadership skills through creating and designing their own community-service projects.
In this special edition of Ask the Vet, Dr. Tonya
Sparks, DVM addresses important questions about
breeding and spay/neuter.
There is a lot of debate regarding the perfect age for spaying
or neutering a pet. First things first: “to spay” an animal is
to remove the ovaries and uterus of females, and “to neuter” is to remove the testicles in male pets.
The students learned about the five-step method to creating a service project and implemented each step throughout their work on
an animal-welfare project. Students completed research after a guest-speaker visit from the
Forsyth Humane Society. They created a survey, which was distributed to fellow students school-wide regarding their knowledge of
pet care.
The most important consideration is the safety of the puppy
or kitten to withstand anesthesia for the procedure, meaning that their lungs, liver and kidneys are fully developed
to metabolize the sedatives. There are many proponents of
“pediatric spaying/ neutering,” meaning pets as young as
6 months of age, in effort to curb the pet overpopulation.
These procedures, for the most part, are very safe.
During the planning phase, students worked on logistics, brochure
design and marketing. The action component of the project was creating cat blankets and puppy toys for FHS. Students loved making
these items because they knew they were helping an animal that
was currently without its own family.
In fact, many veterinary colleges currently teach that spaying and neutering can be done safely at any age. The majority of veterinarians, however, still recommend spaying or
neutering between 5–6 months old, as long as the individual animal is healthy at the time. Keep in mind that some kittens may go into heat as early as 4 months of age, so spaying
should happen at the first signs of heat in these cases. Most
dogs are at least six months old before they go into heat for
the first time.
During the reflection phase of the project, students (with the help of
a volunteer) finished work on a brochure that explained the results
of the survey, the cat blanket project, explained what they learned
and even provided resources to others regarding spay/neuter, vaccinations and where to turn for help with building a fence for your dog.
During the celebration component of our project, the students practiced public speaking by telling partygoers what they learned while
working on the first project of the YLC. Puppy Erin stopped by to
celebrate the YLC’s accomplishments with the children as well as
parents, friends, teachers and volunteers.
While you really can’t spay or neuter too early in a pet’s life,
it certainly can be done too late. It is very well documented
that spaying an animal before the first heat prevents the
development of mammary gland tumors later in life. Additionally, unspayed females are at risk for life-threatening
pyometra (an infection within the uterus that can lead to
sepsis), ovarian/uterine cancer and unplanned pregnancy,
of course. Non-neutered (or “intact”) males are more at risk
for an enlarged and inflamed prostate, testicular cancer
and undoubtedly, wandering away in search of an in-heat
female. This increases the risk of them getting lost permanently, being injured by cars or fighting with other males,
potentially leading to the spread of infectious diseases,
such as FIV, as well.
If you’re still uncertain about the benefit of spaying or neutering your pet, consider this: it will increase his/her chance
of a longer and healthier life. Altering your canine friend will
increase his life an average of one to three years, and in felines, three to five years. Last but not least, it will help to reduce the pet overpopulation problem that is endemic in this
country and ease the burden on our overwhelmed shelters.

Changing Lives
A New Leash on Life Continues to Thrive!
The New Leash on Life program at the minimum-security Forsyth Correctional Center continues to change the lives of both men and dogs.
Angels 4 Paws
Christi Eley, founder of Angel Bear
Yoga, has developed a wonderful new
humane education program designed
to teach children about being kind to
animals. The program is called Angels
4 Paws and is designed to educate children about character traits such as
kindness, compassion, and patience
through movement. Children are read
stories about animals and are then
asked to do some fun stretching with
“paw poses” such as moving like a curious cat or a playful puppy. The combination of education through
stories, character development, and
movement and seeing through the
eyes of an animal provides a wonderful learning experience for young
children. Christi is looking to take the
program to preschools this year and
potentially to K-2 public and private
schools this fall. Her four-part class
series will also be featured at the Children’s Museum this fall.
On April 5, we graduated our tenth group of dogs. They were an interesting mix: Ty, a sweet
hound Retriever mix who just needed some basic manners; Joker, a very spirited soul in
need of a little tough love; Spunky, a great energetic dog who, inexplicably, hadn’t found a
home from his previous session in the program; and Lindey, one of the shyest, most traumatized dogs we’d ever seen. Midway through the session, a fifth dog joined us: Chloe, a Great
Dane who had been in the program before, but was surrendered back to FHS when her owner
could not adequately care for her.
It was a fascinating ten weeks, especially watching Perry, our lead inmate-trainer, work
with Lindey. She entered the program an emotionally troubled dog who was so “shut down”
she was unwilling to even get out of her crate. Through patience, understanding, discipline,
and oceans of love, Perry, guided by our volunteer professional trainers, brought her slowly,
slowly out of her shell of fear. She eventually learned to run the agility course and all the
basic obedience commands.
We weren’t sure Lindey would even be able to attend graduation, to say nothing of going
home with a family. But… she did: an understanding family with two kids and two other
dogs. Spunky, too, found a family who loves him for his adventurous spirit and smarts. Chloe
is now home with experienced Great Dane owners, and with two other dogs to play with
(one a Great Dane even bigger than she!), and sweet Tyler now lives with a gentle couple, who
will give him all the love he needs. Joker, our rambunctious smarty-pants, “re-upped” for the
program to continue his training, and he’s now in our current, eleventh group at the prison.
We had filmmakers this spring, too! Two different groups—one from UNCSA’s cinematography program and one from UNCG’s film program—shot footage for two different documentaries about our local New Leash on Life. We’ll look forward to sharing news of both these
films as they transform from hours and hours of footage to edited documentaries.
FHS’s New Leash on Life now has a dedicated website. Please visit newleashonlifefcc.org
to learn more about the dogs and how to adopt them, to buy New Leash on Life gear, and
perhaps to make a much-needed donation. The program receives no state funding, and is
dependent on contributions.
FHS is very fortunate that Christi is
supporting us by donating 10% of the
proceeds to FHS. Her program really
supports the goals and mission of FHS
by educating young people about being kind to animals. It also gives FHS a
wonderful opportunity to reach more
families and invite them to visit FHS
to adopt or volunteer. FHS is also very
glad that Christi’s daughter, Erin, volunteers with us!

The Time is NOW
You can help unchain Forsyth dogs
•
During an Advisory Board public meeting more than 100
people came in support, and only eight spoke in opposition.
• Similarly, an online survey by the Winston-Salem Journal
resulted in 64% of the public in favor, with a record-breaking
number of people responding.

We feel that the tethering issue has been given more than a fair hearing, and that the community has clearly and overwhelmingly spoken
in favor of restrictions against the 24/7, permanent tethering of dogs.
Our understanding is that the matter is now in your hands, and that
the next step is the presenting of a draft ordinance to the Board of
Commissioners during one of its Thursday briefings.
Dear Mr. Watts:
On behalf of our organizations, we respectfully request that you facilitate this process at your very earliest convenience. Thank you for
your time and assistance.
Thanks to the work of the Forsyth County Animal Control Advisory
Board, the plight of permanently tethered/chained dogs has finally received the much-deserved support of our community. We are
proud that our organizations have had several representatives serve
on the Advisory Board, and we look forward to seeing a proposed
tethering ordinance brought before the Board of Commissioners as
soon as possible.
Yours truly,
For The Board of Directors of:

As far back as 2009, the Advisory Board has discussed the need for a
countywide ordinance regulating the permanent tethering of dogs.
On April 15, 2010, the Advisory Board reached a consensus to recommend a tethering ordinance in its 2010 Annual Report to the Board
of Commissioners. At that meeting, former Animal Control Director
(and then Advisory Board member) Jerry Canady praised the county for moving in this direction. More importantly, our current and
highly respected Animal Control Director, Tim Jennings, shares his
sentiments.

At the request of county management, the Advisory Board, with several new members, once again took up the tethering issue at its January 20, 2011 meeting. The chairperson polled each board member for
votes. Much to our delight, the new board voted eight to two in support of an ordinance, although two members were subsequently reported in the Winston-Salem Journal as having “changed their mind.”

Consequently, the Advisory Board was again asked to review the issue. On March 17, 2011, the January meeting minutes, including the
original 8/2 vote, were approved. A footnote was made in the March
minutes reflecting that two members stated that they were “confused” and wanted to change their vote.
Pawsitively Good News Readers: Please help us advocate
on behalf of all the chained dogs in Forsyth County! You can
send an email or call the County Board of Commissioners and
politely ask them to vote a chaining ordinance. Email contact
information is found at www.forsyth.cc/commissioners, or you
can access their voicemails via 703-2020. Please do this today!
Thus, on three occasions the Advisory Board has shown support of a
tethering ordinance and this is very consistent with the wishes of the
citizens of Forsyth County:
• As a result of a 30-day public poll by our Animal Control
Department, over 1,500 county residents stated their support
of an ordinance and only 80 opposed it.
