Each year at Hoquiam High School,
the staff helps the senior class put on a
Mother’s Day celebration known as Mothers’ Tea. This tea allows the seniors to let
their moms know how much they mean to
them, plus a few secrets along the way!
Congrats
Grizzlies!
This year there were ten acts
including songs, skits, poems and dances,
each bringing tears to the eyes of those in
the audience. A Mothers’ Tea court was
selected from the senior class, a special
honor and last hurrah for those who have
yet to make one their senior year. This year,
the court included Queen Brittany Nations,
King Brenner Carlstrom, Princesses Mariah
Nelle, Brandi Creviston, Linda (Nikki) Poor,
Ana Talamantes and Princes David Molitor, Tachoy Ibabao, Josh Bishop and Tristan
Stutesman.
Senior Tanisha Bemis sang a classic
Taylor Swift song, “The Best Day” depicting
a little girl and her childhood growing up
with her mother, and Tim Hoover turned
to his softer side going for a poem all about
his mom and his appreciation for her! With
a few senior secrets revealed such as that of
Brandi Creviston who let her brother drive
her car or Joel Brydon staying up past 10:30
p.m. on a school night, all were able to leave
feeling appreciated and enlightened.
Thank you moms for being such
a big aspect of these seniors lives, and for
making them the amazing class that they
are. Whether you are a mom, grandma, aunt
or otherwise, you’ve done a terrific job and
Hoquiam will miss your amazing kids next
year!

A “Genuine Time”
Mr. Fantastic
Chandra Munger
Annually, the Mr. Fantastic pageant serves as a fundraiser for the Hoquiam High School cheer squad.
This year, with more attendance than we have had in the past few years the cheer squad was able to bring in
close to $1,700. With 13 sponsors and close to 250 people in attendance this was easily one of the most fun
events of the school year. The cheer squad was able to give away 13 prizes to each of the thirteen contestants,
who all participated in three phases of competition including beach wear, talent, and evening wear. Prizes were
awarded to the person who scored the highest in each phase, and to people who were voted best in several
categories by the audience.
The talent portion each year proves to be one of the most entertaining parts of the show because the
boy’s personalities really get a chance to shine. Each year the talent’s shown really surprises the audience because of the humor and talent that is able to be seen. Whether some of these boys can sing or not, they really
manage to put on a show. Evening and beach wear are also very humorous, in the sense that sometimes they
have more fun dressing like girls...or in Joel Brydon’s case, Joe dirt. With 13 strong acts and one amazing emcee the audience was easily engaged and entertaining for all ages.
The cheer squad greatly appreciates the dedication of the 13 men involved and the generosity of the 13
sponsors. Without these people the show would not have been able to happen, and the boys would be not have
been able to receive such great prizes. Thank you and congratulations to Mr. Fantastic, Tristan Stutesman!

Farewell
Farewell to Grizzly Days
Bryson Carley
As the next few days pass, plans are put into
place and farewells are told. Seniors can’t help but to
remember the days when we roamed the crowded
halls and pushed our ways into the memory filled
classrooms and crawled our way up into seniority.
So say goodbye to the crowded halls and the
strict teachers because ready or not high school has
come to an end. When we look back on the days that
we were the kings and queens of the harbor it will
bring back great memories. So from here the senior’s
days must end. So say goodbye to your fellow classmates and hello to new beginnings.
We were
seniors
when...
* Hoquiam High School was honored as a
“School of Distinction.”
* The U.S. ran out of Velveeta cheese.
* Seahawks were awarded for having the
loudest fans.
* The XXII Olympic Winter Games were
held in Sochi, Russia.
* Niagara Falls froze over.
* The United States Government shut
down.
* Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing.
* Seahawks won the Super Bowl!
* “Selfie” became a word in the dictionary.

Grizzly Pride
Farewell to a Leader
Alexis Franklin
“Let’s go Beast Mode!” Breaunna (Mogley)
Simpson came into the 2013-2014 school year with
a theme that could not be forgotten. Every student,
teacher, and “ready-to-be dissected frog” went “Beast
Mode” this school year with the legendary help of a
great president. Mogley is an extraordinary girl that
has played an extremely significant role in the success of Hoquiam High School this school year. She
was the Executive President, mascot, an All-League
Manager, and the school photographer.
The level of effort and devotion Mogley had
for Hoquiam High School is immeasurable. She went
to almost every game, match, or invite she could to
support Hoquiam teams. Her unparalleled spirit was
shone through countless appearances as the Grizzly
Mascot in her super-hero cape. She also participated
in games and other local community events to help
bring Grizzly Pride to all.
Mogley also took part in managing three different sports this year: Girls’ Soccer, Girls’ Basketball,
and fastpitch. She helped write down statistics, filled
water bottles, and was there for her teams every step
of the way. Every team showed a great deal of appreciation towards her when it came down to the end
of the season. One goal of Mogley’s was to become
an All-League Manager and she did it! She was given
that title during the winter and spring sports season.

Farewell to a Leader Cont.

Picture after picture was taken by Mogley. She
captured every important moment of the 2013-2014
school year through a lens. Although you may not
know it, Mogley submitted a large portion of the pictures that are featured in this year’s yearbook. She also
submitted several of her own pictures to be put in the
Gazette. Mogley has taken on the role of school photographer this year and has done an excellent job!
Being the school president is not easy. There
are countless jobs, meetings, and atrocious paperwork
that have to be done in order to maintain the school.
Mogley spent hours on a daily basis working on ASB
tasks. Students and teachers alike were constantly
watching her run around the school talking to people,
putting up posters, and performing “presidential
tasks.” Coming into the school year Mogley wanted
to make it a year to remember and she undoubtedly
succeeded. Pep assemblies were far more spirited and
exciting with her loud voice and commitment. The
school was represented exceptionally well every month
at school board meetings. The “Beast Mode” belt made
its first appearance. She also brought enthusiasm and
friendliness to every event she attended.
Breaunna (Mogley) Simpson brought “Grizzly
Spirit” back to Hoquiam High School and held on to
it with great pride. She has left legacy not only as an
excellent president but as a powerful contributor to
the community as a whole. She is a great friend to all
that accept her and will no doubt be very successful in
her post-high school career. Thank you for a great year
Mogley!

College
College Essentials
Cody Loman
As graduation becomes closer and closer each day, the senior class of 2014 is preparing for college.
There are the very basics such as, laptops, cell phones, school supplies, etc. that are needed. However as a
large number of freshmen college students are finding out, these basics do not cover hardly any of their needs
during college. I have created a list of a few items that may have been overlooked by most while packing.
1) Refrigerator- This is nice
to hold drinks and foods
that need to be kept cold.
Mini fridges are the best to
use because they are small
and cheaper than a full size
fridge.
4) Walking Shoes- Walking
shoes for larger campuses is
a must have. Your feet will
hurt more if you are not
equipped with a proper pair
of walking shoes.
2) Fan- Another good thing
to have is a fan. A desk fan
will work fine. Some dorms
don’t have air conditioning
to cool your room on hot
days.
5)Towels/Shower SuppliesThese are nice since some
colleges don’t have towels to
use or soaps and shampoos
available to students.
3) Computer- A computer
is a great tool to have for
school work and typing papers for class. It is also good
for playing games to pass
time.
6) Snacks- Meals sometimes
are not enough to suit your
fancy. Most campuses will
have snack bars or vending
machines in them.

What is one secret you kept to
yourself all of high school?
Trey Bennett and Jaron Rose
Sammy Lowder– I’m not from Washington, I was actually born in Huntington Beach, California. I moved
here when I was around 10 years old.
Ariel Mendoza-Sigman– All of my friend’s secrets. I
don’t kiss and tell!
Kiona Goodman– I don’t have secrets, I’m an open
book.
Roxanne Sparks– I hated wrestling every second I was a
part of it (this is why I only stuck it out through freshman year).
Shawn Brand– I wanted to have no gender.
Rosie Valdez– I really like this place.
Curtis Hemenway- Every morning I think about putting on a dress but I put on a suit instead.
Dylan Darragh-Frank– I wasn’t always a good person.
Kenny Huffman- I don’t want to go to college.
Jordan Muhlhauser– I’m slightly dyslexic, but instead of spelling or reading things wrong, I do things
backwards. For example, if my dad says, “Put this on
the left,” I would put it on the right. Not on purpose
though.
Dylan Kaczmarczyk- I’m actually a “Magic” nerd.
Rain Braack– I am short.
Tim Hoover– The one secret I haven’t told anyone is
that I don’t really like a lot of people.
Brandi Creviston– I spilled Pringles on the bus my
freshman year.
Crystal Fullbright– I’m open, if you ask.
McKell Sansaver-Runsthrough– I don’t know exactly
how many half siblings I have, and I really don’t like
Native jokes…at all.
2
Cassandra Schroeder- I’m actually not that smart.
Richard Thompson– I’m not from Earth.
Ivan Salguero– That I wish I did wrestling.
Mario Joya-Fernandez– That I wanted to join the military.
Kelly Barr– It hurts that choir awards were hardly
recognized

Deciding Majors
Liberal Arts vs. Sciences
Tannim Salisbury
Liberal arts colleges and research universities
are common higher education schools for students who
have just graduated high school. Despite their diverse
similarities and differences, there are definite pros and
cons to each.
Liberal arts colleges usually lead to majors focusing on language, literature, business, and law. Students
are taught a broad curriculum over their first two years
before deciding upon a major. Some of the pros include
small class sizes. This means that the professors know
their students well. A liberal arts college is beneficial for
those planning to continue their education. Of course,
this type of college also has its drawbacks: with fewer
students, there is a lack of variety or diversity, and there
are fewer choices for a major.
Research universities tend to lean towards majors in areas of science and mathematics. These schools
often offer degrees all the way up to a doctorate. These
universities offer many benefits: a higher potential salary
for graduates, a wide range of majors, and more available
jobs in today’s world of technology. Cons of research
universities include tuition, which is generally greater
than that of a liberal arts college, and four to eight years
of greater workload than liberal arts students face.
Both liberal arts colleges and research universities have their benefits and drawbacks for aspiring
students. While liberal arts colleges are less strenuous
and offer an easy transition from high school to college,
research universities offer a wider range of majors and
more job availability. In the end, the choice is up to the
individual, as will more and more frequently be the case
for any student as their life goes on.

Advice
Teacher to Student Advice
Cody Loman
As the day of graduation nears, it is getting
even more real that the seniors are leaving school for
good. It is good to have knowledge or advice from
those around you that have already graduated. Teachers here at Hoquiam High School are a good example
of someone to get words of wisdom from. Several
teachers were asked if they had any words to say to
seniors.
Ms. Howard, the woodshop teacher, responded
with “Find something you love to do and make a job
out of it.”

Some of our Hoquiam High School seniors
plan on enlisting in one of the armed forces. Reasons
why they might want to join are: stability, respect,
adventure, education and much more. When in the
army, there is an opportunity to receive a fully-funded education. Some want to do it for the adventure
and respect for protecting their country, while others
do it for the steady paycheck that they earn.
The only two seniors that have enlisted or are
thinking about enlisting are: Shawn Brand who has
already enlisted to the National Guard and Angel
Mazariegos who wants to join the Navy and hopefully become a Naval Diver.
