GRAYS HARBOR COLLEGE F O U N D A T I O N INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES Winter 2015 Happy Holidays to you, from us! Dear Friends of GHC Foundation, With our appreciation comes our holiday greeting and update of 2015 Foundation activities. It has been a great year. This year the Foundation board generously awarded $102,000 in appropriations to Grays Harbor College including First Year Experience, Bishop Summer Musical, Student Tickets, Library Projects, Exceptional Faculty Awards, GED Testing, Childcare Grants, Athletic Scholarships, Graduation Breakfast, Year End Awards, Modumath Software, Orkney Book Loans, Bishop Center Equipment, Commercial Truck Driving Ramps and GHC Employee Awards. Our 26-member board oversees more than 100 unique named scholarships. We also manage 33 endowed legacy scholarship accounts. During the 2015-16, year more than 300 students received scholarships totaling more than $600,000. Thanks to a major donor gift, we manage the Hughes Tool Scholarship program and awarded fifty five vocational students (Automotive, Carpentry, CDL, Diesel, Welding, and Nursing) tools necessary for their trade. The World Class Scholar program is a partnership between local students, their schools and the College. 129 students completed the requirements in 2015. 60 WCS students are on campus this year using $120,000 in awards. As we look ahead to 2016, we are optimistic as our scholarship list is growing. Students can begin applying to the online system starting 1/5/2016. The website is www.ghc.edu/scholarships. The deadline will be March 10. Thirty students received scholarships during the Fall Scholarship event, for a total of $70,000. New scholarships were funded by the GHC Trustees in honor of retiring trustee Randy Rust and the Aberdeen High School Class of 1973. As we pause to count our blessings we are thankful for our donors and your understanding of student expenses as they pursue educational dreams. The generosity of our GHC Foundation donors helps students succeed in so many ways. With appreciation, Jan Jorgenson, Executive Director Lynn Green, GHC Foundation Board member, awarding the Arthur E. & Mary Emma (Hyde) Cross Memorial Scholarship to Aliss Barre, Callee Douglass, Nichole Franks, Luis Silva at the Fall Awards. Welcome New Board Member Alumni Roundtable—March 15, 2016 Julianne Hanner, CEO of Hanner Enterprises which owns and operates several McDonald’s franchises in Grays Harbor and Pacific counties, recently joined the GHC Foundation Board. Julianne is an active community member, Aberdeen Rotarian, active supporter of the Grays Harbor YMCA Strong Kids and former development chair for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western WA. She served five years on Governor Gregoire’s Workforce Training & Education Board. The mother of three daughters, Julianne is a former High School teacher. Welcome Julianne! We are inviting all alumni to join us for an Alumni Roundtable on March 15, 2016. This will be a great opportunity for GHC alums to come on campus, see what is new and visit with friends. As part of the festivities when the new Schermer Instructional Building was dedicated, the GHC Foundation staff compiled alumni rosters for every year, starting with 1930 when the College first opened. More than 14,000 names were posted on the walls, alumni found their name and highlighted them. The earliest alum in attendance was Lou Messmer (Class of 1939 and longtime GHC instructor). If you are one of the 14,000 who attended GHC over the years, please let us know. It is a goal of the Foundation to gather as many alumni names as possible this year, our 85th! 1620 Edward P.
