Information Package
Kecskemét, 2010
Welcome to Kecskemét
Thank you for your interest in studying at the Kecskemét
College. We would be very happy to welcome you in Kecskemét,
should you decide to follow a foreign student's course here.
This guide gives you general information on Kecskemét,
it's college and the programmes and courses taught in English and
Hungarian at the Teacher Training Faculty. The information
package has been designed to provide our international students
with optimum information about their stay here. Exchange
students can choose to be full-time or part-time student, or pick
courses from several different programmes to form their
individual study program. This guide contains, however,
information primarily for undergraduate students.
A brochure like this will not be able to answer all your
questions, of course, and if you have further queries you should
not hesitate to contact the International Office at our College. To
have more information about Hungary we suggest that you visit
the homepage of the Hungarian Tempus Public Foundation
(http://www.tpf.hu/) where you can find the User's guide to
Hungary for international students in three languages.
We will do our best to make sure that your time in Kecskemét
is as enjoyable and academically rewarding as possible .
About Kecskemét - in General
Kecskemét town - seat of Bács
Kiskun County - is situated in Central
Hungary, on the Great Hungarian Plain,
85 km south of Budapest, 85 km north of
Szeged town, and roughly the same
distance (40 to 50km) from the two
largest rivers, the Danube and Tisza.
Though part of the Great Plain, the
region around the town, (the so-called
Kiskunság (Minor Cumania) has a
face of its own), Kecskemét is
characterised by a diversity of forms.
The area west of Kecskemét is covered
by something once known as
migrating sand, a couple centuries
ago, it was stopped by planting forests, fruit trees
and vineyards. In the east, a large area of sandy loess
joins the Minor Cumania, providing excellent soil for
the plough-lands.
Kecskemét is the seat town of Bács-Kiskun, the
largest county in Hungary (with a population of
540,000). Its importance in terms of economic
geography is due to its advanced and many-sided
transportation infrastructure. It would also deserve
the title of 'The Hungarian Town of Ideal Location'.

Kecskemét is the financial centre of the SouthPlain Region. The South-Plain Region consists of
Bács-Kiskun, Csongrád and Békés Counties.
Kecskemét has secured an important role in the
new system, since the South-Plain Regional
Council of Development has founded its financial
cabinet in our town under the leadership of János
Szász, (Regional South-Plain Director of OTP
Bank Rt). This decision “officially” reflects it’s
long-existing state, namely that the financialeconomic centre of the region is Kecskemét.
Besides the National Bank of Hungary OTP, the
largest commercial bank also placed its regional
headquarters here. The first task for the
Financial Cabinet is to prepare various resource maps. They wish to assess the credit and support
possibilities, but as these are only available if applicants can produce a certain amount of own
resources, the Cabinet also gathers information about the property situation of local governments and
explores investable, normal and venture capital.
5
The Cabinet wishes to present a
realistic picture of the situation of
banking services by exploring what
kind of improvements should be made
in the future.

Kecskemét College
Kecskemét College came into existence by the decision of
Hungarian Parliament on 1st January, 2000, trough the integration
of the following three institutions.
Technical College of Mechanical Engineering and Automation
Kecskemét Teacher Training College
Horticultural College Faculty of Horticultural and Food Processing University.
The colleges above are declared to be college
faculties after the integration. Therefore
Kecskemét College functions as a higher
educational institution with three Faculties
(Horticultural College Faculty, Mechanical
Engineering and Automation College Faculty and
Teacher Training College Faculty) and is
authorized to grant college degrees. Kecskemét
College was founded as the biggest multifaculty college of Central Hungary of which faculties and
departments gathered an intellectual Capital .
The determined goal of the college is to meet the
requirements which are valid in every European
higher educational institution: modern
education, scientific research and development,
technology transfer and consulting. The college
achieved EN ISO 9001:2000 certificate in
2003.
Due to the accepted Institutional Development Plan and the Capital Investment Plan a new student
hostel, the Ecology Institution, and the Infor mation Technology Institution were established to serve
the teaching programme, research activities and the welfare of the students.
7
Our region went trough a considerable table progress in
the last decade and after establishing modern infrastructure
numerous companies using modern technologies (several
with foreign interest among them) settled down in the region.
We think Kecsekemét College has great opportunities in
future cooperation with industrial and economical
organization.
We hope that the expectable growth in the economy of
Southern Plain Region will have a beneficial effect on the
development of Kecskemét College and on qualified experts'
chances of finding job.

What is ECTS?
ECTS - the European Credit Transfer System - was developed by the European Commission in order
to provide generally valid and accepted procedures for the recognition of study qualifications gained by
students on courses outside their home country. It is also intended to provide more binding conditions,
more flexibility and a greater degree of clarity in the organizing and running of courses for foreign
students. ECTS gives students the opportunity to clarify definitively with their home university how
many courses or classes they should attend while they are abroad and under what conditions the
qualifications they obtain will be recognized by their home university upon their retur n.
How does ECTS operate?
Kecskemét College has undertaken to participate in ECTS within the framework of the LLP (Lifelong
Learning Programme). This means that both students from universities outside Hungary and students
of Kecskemét College have the opportunity to receive from their home institutions official and binding
recognition of study qualifications obtained abroad. For this to be done, a Learning Agreement must be
concluded between the student and the home university before he or she starts to study abroad. The
Learning Agreement is drawn up by the home university. The table below shows how many ECTS points
in which types of class can be obtained at the Kecskemét College Teacher Training Faculty. Classes are
listed in the table shown in the chapter titled ' Opportunities for study', and categorized according to
type: lectures, seminars, practical classes etc. Category abbreviations are given in the following table.

Independent academic assignments and projects are given ECTS points depending on the work
involved. The weighting in individual cases is arranged by agreement between Kecskemét and the home
university. In addition to the Learning Agreement, a further important document is the Transcript of
Records. When you have completed your courses in Kecskemét, your results are entered on a Transcript
9
of Records and sent to your home university. The transcript shows the names of the classes you have
attended, the number of ECTS points acquired, the Hungarian marks and grades given to you by the
lecturers, and the ECTS marks, which allow your home university to convert your results into the form
normally used in your home country.

ECTS grade scale
At the start of the semester you should always ask your Hungarian lecturers what you must do to
obtain a grade for the particular classes you wish to attend. Requirements for individual classes are not
regulated in a general or overall way by the College, but are decided on by the particular lecturer
concerned. If you have any questions on these points, please contact Dr.. Ágnes Horváth, Rectorate.

Information for student visitors
Registration procedures
Police-Registration
If you travel with an Erasmus-scholarship to Hungary, you might need a study visa,
despite the fact that people coming to Hungar y from most European countries do not need a
visa. Often they can stay here for three months without getting a residence permit. An entry visa
called TM 6 is required for every foreign student arriving to Hungary to study who wishes to
study for more than 3 months. We suggest that you consult the Consulate or Embassy of the
Hungarian Republic, or a body accredited to represent Hungary in your country and ask them
for the up-to-date travel information. Within two weeks of being in Kecskemét you must apply
for a residence permit at the local Police Station. The coordinators in the respective institute will
be of assistance to you in this case. The ERASMUS students usually travel abroad during their
stay and the 3 months period can start again.
Registration at the Institute
Students must contact the Erasmus coordinator of the departments they are going to study at
directly. The departmental coordinators will help in orientation and registration at the college.
There are also Hungarian students who will help you in finding your way in the town and
organise registration matters at the Faculties, i.e.t the Bács-Kiskun County Libary, ect.
Getting to Kecskemét
After you have arrived at the Airport Terminal 2 ("Ferihegy 2 ") or Terminal 1
(“Ferihegy 1”). the best is to take a train from the Ferihegy train station. Another
alternative is to make use of Airport-Minibus-Service , which takes you from the airport
to the Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western Railway-Station) where you can take a train to
Kecskemét.
You can order an Airport Minibuses either right in the arrival hall or by calling
00/36/1/2968555. The fare is HUF 2300 per person.
20
If you travel by train to Hungary you will arrive at Keleti Pályaudvar (Eastern RailwayStation). In this way you can take Tram Nr. 73 which takes you to the Nyugati
Pályaudvar (Western Railway-Station). The railway ticket between Budapest and
Kecskemét costs HUF 1770 (If you travel by Intercity-rail you have to pay a surcharge
total HUF 2120 for a seat reservation ticket). We suggest you to take an Intercity train
because it's more comfortable, air-conditioned. Tickets can be bought in advance at
railway stations, tourist offices or by phone trough MÁVDIREKT (From Hunary:
+3640494949) or from abroad +3613719449.
By Bus it is possible to depart from the long distance bus station Népstadion (Hungária
körút 46-48. Tel:(1) 252 4496 (Metro: Red Line, Népstadion Station) (85,7 Km) to
Kecskemét costs HUF 1350. Later on you will have Student card, which gives you 67,5%
discount on bus and train fares.
Airport buses (No.: 200) run from the Kõbánya-Kispest terminus, metro line 3, to
Ferihegy Terminals 1 and 2.

Cost of Living
Average costs of living in Kecskemét, including room, board, and transportation, amount to
€ 250-400 per month. The college cafeterias always offer inexpensive meals. Living expenses
are reasonable in Hungary as prices here and in other Eastern European countries are very
favourable to Americans and Western Europeans. The official exchange rate is about 250 HUF
to one Euro. A few examples of prices follow: a meal in a modest restaurant costs about € 4-6.
Public transportation is inexpensive in general; for example, a round-trip ticket for the express
train between Kecskemét and Budapest with the student reduction costs around ten euros.
21
A local bus ride is around one euro. Even books in English language and illustrated volumes that
participants in some courses may want to buy cost little more than € 15-20. CDs of classical
music cost between five and fourteen euros, while pop music costs slightly more. Some
commodities, on the other hand, are more expensive in Hungary than in Western Europe or in
the United States such as electronics and gasoline.
Health and Insurance
All students must have medical insurance when they register at the faculty. The medical
care of the citizens of the European Economic Area(EU, NO, IS, LI, CH), has been provided on
the basis of the European Health Insurance Card. The citizens of these countries are entitled to
the same treatment under the same conditions as the residents of the country.
You can go to see a family doctor any time, medicine is available at a significantly reduced
rate and all hospital costs are covered, too, should you need any hospital treatment. It is always
advisable to have some kind of travel insurance in order to be fully covered for the trip to
Hungary and the first few weeks in the country.
However, if you choose insurance from your home country, in most cases you have to pay all
your medical costs on the spot (which, in case of an accident can be enormously high) and then
you get the money, or a certain part, back after you return home.
Study facilities at the host institution?
After you have arrived in Kecskemét you have to register at the College (Izsáki út 10.) and
then you will get a student card. During your stay you have to pass exams, which are laid down in
a so-called study-contract, Learning Agreement signed by the representative of your institution
as well as by the representative of the host institute. You will get a certification: Transcript of
Records about your examination results and quality of participation in the lessons.
22
Libraries
Erasmus-students can borrow books at no cost and work in the reading rooms of the faculty
library. The faculty library can be found at K aszap utca in the back garden, Building 4. You can
use the catalogues there and then you can find the books and the periodicals in the libraries of
the college. At your first visit do not forget to bring your Student Card and Passport with you.
More information about the library is provided at the library itself.

Other practical information
Opportunity of E-mail and Internet
You can use of these at the Library of the Faculty or at the Computer cabinets (Room
50,66,74) which are open from 8 till 4 p.m. Each of the computers has Internet connection, and
software essential for education is also accessible. The ID and password you receive after the
registration. There is free Wifi on the main square and in some of the cafeterias.
Telephone and Post Office
In Hungary, there are two types of telephones: those that use coins and those that use
cards. You can obtain a card (60 or 120 units) from the post office or from newsagents. Telephone
booths are blue. We have three main mobile telephone company: T-mobile, Pannon GSM and
Vodafone. You can buy SIM card to your phone if it is suits. The minimal credit is around €10.
HOW TO CALL SOMEONE?
You need ten numbers if you are phoning anywhere in Hungary. From Kecskemét, if you
call Budapest you need to use 06 in front of the number. Budapest itself uses 1 in front of the 7digit number. If you want to call Debrecen, for example, dial 06 52 and then the 6 digit number
you want to call. To phone abroad you need to dial 00 then the country code, then the number of
the town and finally your correspondent's telephone directory, or by asking at the post office. If
you want to call someone in Hungary from abroad, before the digits you need to use +36 or 00
36 as the country code.
Post Office
The Main Post Office of Kecskemét is in the centre (Kálvin tér 10-12). It is open from 8.0019.00 on weekdays, and from 8.00-12.00 on Saturday. The railway station post office (Kodály
Z. tér 7.) is open from 10-18 on weekdays.
Public Transport
The local transportation services are quite good. There are several bus lines that form a
good public transport network. Vehicles depart in average of 10 minutes. Students can buy
season tickets at ticket offices. An adult monthly ticket costs HUF 4 885. The ticket for students
is HUF 1 700 for a month. There is a possibility to buy a day ticket, and a single ticket for one
journey (HUF 175).
24
Tickets can be bought from the drivers as well, but this costs somewhat more (HUF 245). You
should show your season ticket to the driver when getting on the vehicle, or validate your ticket at
a machine.
Where to buy the tickets? It is possible at the Bus Stations (Noszlopy G. park 1 or Széchényi
tér) or at the newsagents.
Clothing
Hungary, has distinct seasons. Winters can be cold, while springs and summers are hot. The
average temperature in Budapest in December is 4 °C; July, 22 °C. The climate in Kecskemét is
usually a little milder. Bring proper clothes according to various seasons but try to avoid heavy,
elaborate clothing. There is also plenty of clothing available in Hungarian shops and you may
want to buy folk custom items, too, such as embroidered shirts, vest, or jackets.
Shopping and Eating
Shops selling food are usually open from 7.00-20.00 in weekdays and from 7.00-13.00 on
Saturday. Shops of miscellaneous items (clothes, electric items, books, etc.) are open between
9.00 and 18.00 during weekdays and 9.00-13.00 on Saturday. There are also small shops that
are open from 6.00-22.00 every day, and you can find some non-stop shops as well. We also have
shopping centres open all week:

Suggested miscellaneous items

!
Prescriptions, generic brands. Bring a year's supply if you are on a regular prescription. A
note from your doctor explaining your medical condition can be helpful in case of
emergency. (Eyeglass prescriptions and contraceptives can also be useful).
Travel clock or watch.
Favourite Cds, DVDs (Be aware that traditional Hungarian music is beautiful and the CDs
and records sold in Hungary tend to be of very high quality. You definitely won't be without
music.)
Camera with some memory supply. Memories, colour prints and slides as well as video tapes
are available in Hungary but tend to be expensive.
A lightweight laptop computer with your favourite software can be extremely useful.
Diary or journal, pictures of your family, scenes from home. Pictures can be useful if you

want to tell about your family and home to your Hungarian friends. Pictures of yourself can
also be useful in case it is required in some official places.
Cookbooks and favourite recipes from your country can be a great treat to share with
Hungarian friends and host families.
Small gifts
Documents
It is very important that you carry all of your documents in your carr y-on piece of luggage.
Be sure to photocopy all documents and keep them separate from the originals.
Money
The best way to bring money safely to Hungary is to have an electronic bankcard. Visa
Electron, Plus, MasterCard and EuroCard are the most popular in Hungary and you can easily
find ATM machines in Budapest as well as in Szeged to draw HUF from your home account. You
can also keep the bulk of your money in travellers' cheques. We suggest buying American Express
cheques, as they are known worldwide. If you have to exchange money in Hungary, remember
that changing money on the street is illegal and not worth taking the risk. Prices will be more
than reasonable under the official exchange rate. Although it has changed to a market economy,
Hungary still has proportions in its price and economic system and a standard of living which is
different from the one you might used to. It may take a while to get used to the fact that even if
you live within a tight budget, you will probably have much more economic flexibility and buying
power than most Hungarians have.
