Robert Rubin : “Motivating for Success”
November 20th, 6:00pm, At Positano
Robert S. Rubin is an associate professor of Management in the Richard Driehaus College of Business at DePaul University. Professor Rubin specializes in
the areas of organizational behavior and human resource management and his
current research interests span leadership, assessment, and management education. He has been published in numerous books and leading academic journals and is currently on the editorial board of three journals, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Organizational Behavior and Journal of
Leadership and Organizational Studies. Recently, Dr. Rubin co-authored a textbook (McGraw Hill) entitled, Managing Organizational Behavior: What Great
Robert S. Rubin
Managers Know and Do. In addition to his academic work, Bob has been an active human resources and organization development consultant to a variety of industries including
biotechnology, healthcare, dentistry and transportation and frequently serves as a coach for purposes of management skill development. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Saint Louis University.
Motivating for Success: Practicing the Fundamentals of Great Leadership
Great leadership is the process of getting things done through other people. Although often seen
as “common sense,” the skills associated with positively influencing others to perform on the job
remain remarkably elusive. Yet nothing is more critically tied to the success of a practice than its
leadership. In this short course, participants will examine the most important and evidence-based
leadership practices that increase employee motivation and sustain it over time. These practices
span influence tactics, feedback, rewards and recognition and leading change. Even in tough times,
practicing these fundamentals of leadership can keep staff on track and motivated to achieve results
Special Announcement: Meetings will
no longer be held at Tragara’s!!!
Tragara’s is permanently closing. Steve Kahan and Michael Stern
have worked diligently to book new venues for the 2012-2013 meetings. Please see the program schedule on page 4 for new locations.

Presidents Message
I recently attended the Alpha Omega Leadership Conference in Chicago. Our executive director, Heidi Weber, led a great
meeting. The keynote speaker was Steve
Anderson, who as many of you know, has
worked with Walter Hailey’s Dental Boot
Camp, the Crown Council, and has a special relationship with AO.
Not surprisingly, our DC Alumni Chapter
has the same issues and challenges of other
chapters. Basically, growth and retention of
members is internationally with our organization, as well as with other businesses and
organizations. Much of the conference
dealt with these issues.
Adam Freider
President
For people to feel something is worthwhile, they must find a compelling benefit.
For instance, if a patient has a missing
tooth, he can replace it with a fixed, removable or implant prosthesis. The patient
must realize the benefit for the tooth replacement, or he will not accept the treatment. How does this relate to the AO
alumni and student chapters?
First of all, members of the alumni chapters
as well as upper-classmen at the dental
school can mentor first- and second-year
students to help them graduate on time.
This would be a tremendous benefit, as the
student chapters represented at the meeting had an on-time graduation rate of only
50 percent. Students at our Zeta Mu chap-
CAPITOL

ter fared even worse, with a rate of only
25 percent.
A huge benefit of AO membership lies in
the relationships we build with other members, including the support we give to one
another. For students, this could translate
as mentorships. For practicing dentists, it
could translate in a way to alleviate the
stress of running a dental practice, especially as fee-for-service practices are dwindling.
I’m sure everyone is aware that dental divorce and suicide rates are among the
highest of any profession. Perhaps if we
promote AO as an organization that builds
camaraderie, alleviates stress and provides
a much-needed balance in dentists’ lives,
prospective and current members can recognize an important benefit. We are not
just “another study club.” We care about
our members in all facets of their lives.
Not only do we have interesting lectures,
we offer conventions and social events for
members, spouses and children. Furthermore, we pride ourselves in providing tichun-olam with volunteerism for many
charitable causes. This is BALANCE!
Please spread the word about our great
organization—and be proud of it!
Fraternally,
Adam

Editors Note: “My Thoughts”
Andy Lasky
Co-editor
As I sat in a board meeting last
week and we performed the annual ritual
of going through the list of members and
trying to get those who have not yet rejoined from last year to reconsider, my
thoughts ran to why I joined AO and why
I can't fathom how someone cannot want
to be a member of our great organization.
Many years ago, as a young impressionable dental student, I attended my
first AO convention in Vancouver. As
the president of Georgetown's chapter I
spent a week sharing a room with Howard's chapter president, Alan Singer. It is
a week we always reminisce about as we
both had such a great time. We participated in social functions, listened to Nobel Prize winners speak, and met and became friends with other students and
dentists from far and wide..
I sat
through the business sessions with Ben
Williamowsky and other long time AO's
and listened to the deliberations and the
back room politics which used to take
place back then. As the young kid at that
time I mainly kept my mouth shut and
listened and watched. While I didn't always like some of the things that went
on, I came to understand that at the end
of the day all of them came from far and
wide because they all felt so strongly
about the ideals and the mission statement of AO , and because there is no
Andy Lasky
other organization like it. I knew right
away that this was something that I
wanted to be a part of. I have since attended about 30 conventions , developed friendships all over the world and
most importantly come to fully support
all the good that we do. This was not
always easy, and more than once I had my
feeling hurt as a result of slights or exclusions within the small AO community. I
decided that little conflicts of personality
amongst so many type A driven successful individuals was just a cost of doing
business, and at the end of the day not
important enough to make me want to
leave AO. As our mission has evolved,
from the days of gross anti-Semitism that
spurred the founding of AO over 100
years ago to today where we are still vigilant, but our main mission is to support
dental education and dental health in Israel and throughout the world. Doing
that is not an easy task and requires a
collaborative effort by all of us to be successful. Today so many organizations ,
not just AO, are suffering from declining
membership and involvement for reasons
that are not always clear. My appeal to
all of you is that AO needs you, and that
it is a unique organization for so many
reasons, and should be the first groupyou would want to be a part of , much
less one that you would drop out of.
So, please, speak to your friends if
they are considering joining or were
members before and have not rejoined.
If anyone takes the time to really discover
all that AO has to offer we will never
again have to chase after them to pay
their dues. It will be the best money they
have ever spent. Just my thoughts.

how someone
cannot want to
be a member of
our great
organization. “

Interview with Ben Williamowsky
Ben Williamowsky
I recently asked Ben to share some of his AO experiences and his thoughts about AO with me. As
long as I have been in AO Ben has been a driving
force both in our local chapter and on the international level . He has been involved longer than
many of us have been alive, having joined during
World War II in 1944 and amazingly his enthusiasm is undiminished and has maybe even increased
over the years. For me and for many of us he is
what I want to be when I grow up. What follows
are his own thoughts about his early days in AO
and his thoughts regarding the present path of the
fraternity and what we might do to continue to
enjoy the successes of past years.
“What year did you join AO and why?”
I JOINED ALPHA OMEGA IN 1944, UPON
ENETRING U. OF MD, BCDS. THE FIRST PERSON I MET WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THE
BULLETIN BOARD INVITE TO “A SOCIAL” FOR
THE TWO JEWISH DENTAL FRATERNATIES
WAS WALTER LEVINE (FATHER OF OUR MEMBER, WENDY LEVINE)…WALTER LATER BECAME NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF AO. HE
TORE UP THE SIGMA EPSILON DELTA (SED)
FLYER I WAS HOLDING, GAVE ME THE ALPHA
OMEGA FLYER FROM THE BULLETIN BOARD
AND SAID “YOU ARE JOINING ALPHA
OMEGA”….THAT WAS ‘IT’. OF COURSE THE
NON-JEWISH FRATS DID NOT ACCEPT JEWISH STUDENTS SO THEY WERE OUT OF THE
QUESTION.
“What has kept you so involved?”
I WAS KEPT INVOLVED FROM THE
‘BEGINNING’ AS I WAS COMPLETELY CAP-
-Andy Lasky
TURED BY WHAT AO MEANT TO JEWISH STUDENTS…THE ONES IN SCHOOL AS WELL AS
THE ONES WISHING TO BE IN SCHOOL. I
KNEW ABOUT QUOTAS AND I KNEW THAT
THERE HAD BEEN NO JEWISH DEANS OR ADA
PRESIDENTS BEFORE THE FORTY’S. I LIVED AT
THE FRATERNITY HOUSE AND I WAS ALWAYS
IMPRESSED ON HOW THE UPPER CLASS MEMBERS HELPED THE NEWCOMERS TO SUCCEED
THROUGH AN ESTABLISHED LIBRARY OF PAST
EXAMS, AND HOW THEY WERE HELPFUL IN
THE SMALL LABORATORY IN THE HOUSE.
FOR MANY YEARS I FELT (AND I STILL DO)
THAT THE GLUE THAT WOULD ALWAYS HOLD
ALPHA OMEGA WAS ITS TAKE ON JUDAIC VALUES AND THEIR DIRECTION OF MITZVOT AND
TZEDAKAH. THEREFORE I TURNED MOST OF
MY ATTENTION TO ISSUES DEALING WITH
THOSE PRINCIPLES. ONCE THE AO FOUNDATION BECAME A REALITY I THEN HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO FOLLOW MY MISSION
THROUGH THE WORK OF THE FOUNDATION.
SHORTLY THEREAFTER, I TURNED MY ATTENTION TO ISRAEL…THE DENTAL SCHOOLS
THERE AS WELL AS THE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS ESSENTIAL TO “OUR PEOPLE”.
“I know that for many years you were reluctant to run for
Intl. President. What finally influenced you to take the
plunge?”
I FINALLY “TOOK THE PLUNGE” TO STAND
FOR INTERNATIONAL OFFICE FOLLOWING A
DINNER I ATTENDED WITH A GROUP OF FRATERS WHO WERE “PLANNING OUT THE NEXT
SEVERAL YEARS” REGARDING THE SLATE OF
OFFICERS. I BLURTED OUT (MUCH TO MINNA’S
SURPRISE)….”WELL I HATE TO THROW A MONKEY WRENCH INTO THE PLANS, BUT I AM GOING TO RUN FOR INTERNATIONAL SECRETARY”…AND I DID. I FELT THAT FROM MY
MANY YEARS OF INVOLVEMENT, I KNEW MORE
ABOUT THE GOVERNANCE AND DIRECTION
OF AO THAT DID ANYONE IN THE FRATERNITY. I WAS WRONG! I LEARNED MORE IN THE
FOUR YEARS PRIOR TO MY INDUCTION AS AO
PRESIDENT THAT I EVER FELT POSSIBLE,
“ I DON’T FEEL THERE IS
ENOUGH SPACE TO TELL
YOU MY FEELINGS ON
HOW AO AND THE
WORLD OF DENTISTRY
HAS CHANGED. “

Member Spotlight: (Continued)
THIS IS WHY I FEEL THAT THE CHANGE IN GOVERNANCE ENACTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO HAS NOT BEEN
BENEFICIAL TO THE FRATERNITY, THIS IS NOT TO SAY,
OF COURSE THAT LEADERSHIP HAS BEEN LACKING. I
STILL FEEL THERE SHOULD BE COMPETITION FOR OFFICE IN THE FRATERNITY STARTING WITH POSITIONS
BELOW THAT OF PRESIDENT, WITH THE PRESCRIBED
YEARS LEADING TO THE HIGHEST OFFICE.
“How have things changed, both in AO and the world of dentistry in
your view?”
AS FAR AS CHANGES IN THE WORLD OF DENTISTRY….I
CAN SAY NOTHING BAD, NOR WOULD I CHANGE
ANYTHING. DENTISTS ARE SO LUCKY TODAY TO BE
PRACTICING A PROFESSION THAT IS CONTINUALLY
OFFERRING ADVANCES AND DEVELOPING TECHNIQUES THAT I WISH I COULD STILL BE A PART OF.
“Getting people to join and then keeping them active as members
has been an increasing problem in recent years. Any thoughts
about why this has happened within AO, and within many organizations?”
I DON’T FEEL THERE IS ENOUGH SPACE TO TELL YOU
MY FEELINGS ON HOW AO AND THE WORLD OF DENTISTRY HAS CHANGED. AO IS NOT THE ONLY ORGANIZATION SUFFERRING MEMBERSHIP REDUCTION….B’NAI BRITH, ORT, SYNAGOGUES, JNF, HADASSAH…AND MANY, MANY OTHERS…JEWISH AND NON
JEWISH ALIKE FEEL THE PINCH FOR NEW MEMBERS.
REASONS? I SUPPOSE SOCIOLOGISTS COULD DO A
BETTER JOB FINDING REASONS. FOR AO IT IS A LOSS
OF ATTITUDE TOWARD JUDAIC PRINCIPALS…THE ABSENCE OF “WE ARE A FAMILY” ATTITUDE
(INCIDENTALLY THIS WAS INITIALLY COINED BY OUR
OWN STEVE KAHAN MANY YEARS AGO), THE FEWER
JEWISH DENTAL STUDENTS ENTERING THE PROFESSION, MORE FEMALES (TO THEIR CREDIT, OF COURSE)
STUDYING DENTISTRY….WHICH INCREASES THE PRESSURES OF FAMILY AND HOME BUILDING, AND OF
COURSE, TO ME AT LEAST….IS THE EVER PRESENT AND
INCREASING POWER OF THE “ME” GENERATION. MY
DREAM IS THAT SOMEDAY JEWISH DENTISTS (AS WELL
AS OTHERS)COULD UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE
THE NETWORKING ASPECT OF MEMBERSHIP IN
AO….HELPING STUDENTS ENTER THE SCHOOLS…HELP
THEM THROUGH THE SCHOOLS…HELP THEM IN POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS…HELP THEM IN ESTABLISHING
PRACTICES…AND HELP THEM IN WAYS THAT NO
OTHER SIMILAR PROFESSIONAL GROUPS HAVE EVER
DONE.
I AM ALWAYS SADDENNED WHEN I KNOW THAT
SOME ONE HAS GONE THROUGH ALL OF THE STEPS
TOWARD SUCCESS WITH AN INORDINATE AMOUNT
OF HELP FROM THEIR AO LEADERS, AND THEN DO
NOT BECOME ALUMNI MEMBERS. NOT TO GET TOO
RABBINIC, BUT I AM ALWAYS INCLINED TO INVOKE
THE WORDS OF FAMOUS RABBI AND SAGE, HILLEL,
WHO SAID” IF I AM NOT FOR MYSELF, WHAT AM
I….IF I AM ONLY FOR MYSELF, WHO AM I….IF NOT
NOW, WHEN.”. OVER MY DESK FOR YEARS HAS BEEN
A PLAQUE WITH A QUOTE FROM PHILOSOPHER
RALPH WALDO EMERSON: “ALL ARE NEEDED BY
EACH ONE, NOTHING IF FAIR OR GOOD ALONE”. I
TRY TO LIVE THAT.
AS FOR THE PAST….NO ONE WISHES TO HEAR FROM
THE DINASOURS IN OUR MIDST. I FULLY REALIZE
THAT WHAT ‘TURNED US ON’ YEARS AGO IS NOW
PASSE’. MEMBERS COULD NOT WAIT FROM ONE
CONVENTION TO ANOTHER, TO PARTICIPATE IN
VARIETY SHOWS, AND COSTUME BALLS, ELECTION
CAMPAIGNS, AND TO REUNITE WITH OLD AND
NEWER FRIENDS AND FAMILIES. I SUPPOSE THE ONLY
LEFTOVER FROM THE “OLD DAYS” MIGHT BE THE
REVISITING WITH FRIENDS ORIGINALLY MADE AT
OUR CONVENTIONS. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF ONE
WOULD ANTICIPATE BEING INVOLVED IN A GOHI
PROJECT OR A FUNCTION THAT BENEFITS OUR
FOUNDATION TO ALLOW US TO FOLLOW OUR MISSION.
“What do you think we can do to stem the tide?”
HOW DO WE STEM THE TIDE?….ONE ON ONE APPEAL…REINSTATING THE REGENCY SYSTEM…
APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT WE HAVE RETURNED
TO AN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AND GIVE HER (OR
HIM) THE HELP TO ENACT AN AGGRESSIVE MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM. SPEND MORE TIME ON ‘CAPTURING’
AND RECRUITING YOUNG GRADUATES AND ‘GET
AFTER’ THE DROP-OUTS AND THOSE YOUNG
ALUMNI WHO NEVER JOINED. IN OUR OWN CHAPTER, THERE MUST SURELY BE YOUNG MEMBERS WHO
CAN REACH OUT (AGAIN, ONE-ON-ONE) TO CONTEMPORARIES WHO MIGHT BE CONCVINCED TO
RETURN.
“What do you feel is our mission statement today and how has
that evolved since the earlier days of AO.”
I FEEL OUR MISSION TODAY IS…OR SHOULD BE…
THE SAME AS IT WAS SINCE THE BIRTH OF AO AND
MORE SUCCINCTLY SINCE THE BIRTH OF THE ALPHA
OMEGA FOUNDATION….”REACHING OUT TO THE
NEEDS OF DENTAL HEALTH, EDUCATION, RESEARCH,
AND CARE…THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.”
