MYTH: “I don't want my
male dog or cat to feel
like less of a male.”
FACT: Pets don't have any concept of sexual
identity or ego. Neutering will not change a pet's
basic personality. He doesn't suffer any kind
of emotional reaction or identity crisis when
neutered! In fact spayed/neutered pets are easier
to train and show you are a responsible
pet caregiver!

How do I get my dog to STOP jumping on people?
There is nothing more frustrating than trying to pull
your dog off your guests as you greet them at the door, or
comforting a crying child because your dog knocked them
over and caused a skinned knee.
How about when you are on your way to a formal event,
and your dog leaves muddy paw prints all over your dress
clothes? We’ve all been there!
So many of the undesirable behaviors our dogs exhibit
are natural canine instincts. The purpose for which many
dogs were originally bred (herding, guarding, etc) greatly
influences their behavior and characteristics, even though
most dogs no longer have “jobs” to do for their humans.
If you have ever observed multiple dogs playing with each
other, you will notice a lot of jumping, wrestling, and
mouthing. Dogs jump to get attention, from both other dogs
and humans.
It is canine communication for “Hey! How are you! Pay

attention to me!” These natural behaviors are viewed as
disruptive by humans. We as owners need to teach the dog
what kind of behaviors are acceptable in the presence of
humans.
When your dog jumps, you push him down, pull his
collar, raise your voice and cause a commotion. This is
giving the dog attention. It is NEGATIVE attention, but it is
still attention. You are basically rewarding the dog for his
bad behavior. To teach your dog not to jump on people, you
simply have to show them that they get ZERO attention
when they jump, and that may earn attention when all four
paws are on the floor.
Step 1: Ignore the dog.
When your dog is jumping on you, turn your body away
from him. Do not speak to him, or even make eye-contact.
Greeting a dog who is already overly excited will only add
fuel to his fire. Have guests do the same thing.
Step 2: Reward for 4 paws on the floor
Wait until your dog is calm and has all 4 paws on the floor,
then reward him with a treat and attention. If he starts to
jump again, turn your body away, and ignore him until he
has 4 paws on the floor once again. You can even ask him
for a “Sit”, and do not give him ANY attention until he is
sitting calmly in front of you. Your dog needs to understand
that jumping will get him nowhere.
Seems simple enough right? If you and your family are
consistent, your dog will pick it up in no time!

Pack Up Your Pets?
It’s time to plan the family vacation. Everyone’s excited.
Wherever you go, whatever you do, it will be great fun for
the whole family. Or will it? What about the furry member
of the family? Will it be fun for him?
It may be hard to imagine a family trip that doesn’t
include your dog or cat. But here are a few things you
should think about. Getting to and from vacations can be
tricky. Planes, trains, and long car rides are tiring and
can be stressful for pets. Not all hotels and campgrounds
welcome pets. Pets are also not allowed on many
beaches and in other vacation spots. Will Scruffy end up
waiting in a strange hotel room all day? There, unfamiliar
sounds, smells, and noises may frighten him.
Pets are often happiest at home. It may be better to
leave your pet with a responsible friend or a professional
pet sitter. You could also ask your veterinarian to
recommend a boarding kennel.
Whether you decide your pet will be happier joining you
or staying home, plan ahead. Planning will make your
vacation safe and fun for all members of the family.

2012 Euthanasia Statistics … Don’t Shop, Adopt a Shelter Pet!
Statistics are from the 2012 FY Public Animal Shelter Report
http://www.ncagr.gov/vet/aws/Fix/index.htm NCDA&CS Veterinary Division of Animal Welfare
The 2012 NC Animal Shelter Euthanasia Statistics are
better for High Country shelters compared to 2011 statistics
(some shelters were at 93%+ in 2011), but some regions still
have very high euthanasia rates at shelters because of the
high number of incoming animals. Many times the lack of
space in animal shelters (and available cages/dog runs) is a
huge reason they have to euthanize so many. Shelters are
not required to hold owner surrender animals, puppies under
8 weeks old, or injured animals. Any animal picked up as a
stray is held for 3 days then put up for adoption or euthanized
depending on space available and if its deemed an adoptable
pet. Animals surrendered voluntarily do not have any type
of required holding period and may be euthanized on
intake if no space is available in the shelter.
*Note: Any shelter whether "no kill" status or not has to
euthanize animals. Shelters have to euthanize animals that
aren't adoptable, aggressive or feral. They also provide
humane euthanasia for local citizens that cannot afford their
vet bill to have a senior or injured pet put to sleep. "No Kill"
shelters do not euthanize adoptable animals but still have to
put animals to sleep for the reasons listed.
The good news is many shelters are contacting rescue
groups to receive help. All shelters struggle with space issues
and cannot hold dogs or cats longer than a few days in many
areas. Please consider adopting from an animal shelter to
save a life and encourage community members and family to
be responsible owners and to spay/neuter their pets to reduce
overpopulation issues.
Contact [email protected] or (828) 7739112 to find out ways you can volunteer in your area to
improve the lives of cats and dogs that end up in shelters.
Also make sure all personal pets have an id tag or microchip
in case they are ever lost and end up in a animal shelter.
90% of lost animals are never reclaimed because they do not
have an ID tag.
