We were ready to go by nine o’clock am and the cars started driving in thirty minutes early at 9:30. An outstanding number of Corvettes showed up, 55 in all and most of those were representing the Nashville Corvette Club. A good variety of other cars including street rods such as a 1928 Essex and the classic 32 thru 40 Ford and Chevrolet coupes and sedans. The largest group beyond the Corvette classes were represented by Chevys, Chevelles and Camaros. Surpeisingly only a few Mustangs showed up. Also a single Volkswagen, a Karmann Ghia, and a Jaguar XK-150. There are plenty of people to thank for this well received event starting with the Chairman Virgil Hollins and all of his committee volunteers. The silent auction was organized by Sandi & Gary Jones, and the door prizes were managed by Janice Geng. Gary Downing provided a PA system for public announcements and some great music, which was a big hit. These are just a few of the many people who provided ideas and man hours to make this car show a success. We know the areas we need to work on in the future and look forward to next years car show. An Autocross Experience By Don Hoffmeister On the first weekend in October I worked my third autocross since joining the Nashville Corvette Club. The first two times I was pretty well lost having to be told everything to do. But there is always an experienced person around to give you help if you need it. This weekend I was assigned to stage cars on Saturday and work the “Chicago Box” on Sunday. Never did quite understand that name, but it sure is an exciting location to view the cars. You get to see them come by twice on each run. I also got some good exercise re-setting pylons that were knocked down during the runs. Getting there early Saturday morning, I got to help do some timing set-up with Butch and to help Amelia with some of her administrative set-up to log run times. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on before the cars actually start their passes. The club members there were like a well oiled machine with everyone knowing their job and making sure everything was in place to have a smooth operation for the weekend. The trailer was already on site, Butch had already checked to make sure the electronics were ready, Amelia had done timing sheets, pylons were already on the course, and Metts had a leaf blower there to clean the track. Everything was ready to go. The driver’s meeting was like a family reunion. Everyone seemed to know everyone. I heard later there were approximate(Continued on page 13) 3 Meeting Minutes President – Dale Johnson: – Opening remarks and announcements – Cindy in the Freeland Service Bay has items available for breast cancer awareness. There is no cost for any of the items on the table at the door, only donations if you care to give. We will have a couple of presentations and nominations at the end of the meeting. John McGee made a presentation to the club at this weekend’s Autocross of our 2010 NCCC Certificate of 6th place in the nation for master member points. Jeffery Gott, One of the top competitors in NCCC autocross passed away recently. Jeffery was well known across NCCC and has been a staunch Corvette and Autocross supporter. NCCC is to put a brick at the steps of the museum as a memorial to him. Contributions are being accepted to help with this effort. Dr Mark Hilliard of O’More College of Design was presented a $500.00 check for the O’More Scholarship Fund from the club in appreciation of the colleges support for our Car Show. Xtreme Window Tint & Paint Protection out of Franklin, TN gave a presentation of their product that protects the paint on your vehicle. Membership Report – Amelia Workman: Presently there are 284 members on the club rolls. Amelia noted we are getting ready to get into our annual renewal process for club membership and then she introduced new members and visitors. The renewal application is up on the website for use. October 29th is our renewal party at the Thompson’s home. Everyone is invited. In Our Thoughts: Mike Dill is feeling much better and doing well. Martin Workman is back with us tonight. Jim Holder is up and around and doing much better. Johnny Biffle is struggling with his latest treatment. A moment of silence was held to keep these members in our thoughts. Dinner arrangements tonight are at the “Olive Garden”. Vice President – Jennifer Moorhouse: Upcoming events: On October 15th we have been invited by the MidSee Minutes (Continued on page 6) On the Cover: Supporting the National Corvette Museum provides an opportunity for our members to meet other Corvette enthusiasts and to interact with folks from all parts of the country. The cover photo by Stephanie Pots was taken at the Diecast Parking lot in Bowling Green as we were getting ready to run the NCM Autocross at the Z06 Fest in September. The cars on the left of the photo are club members cars and those on the right are participants for the Autocross. While not as extensive or complex as our Autocross events, the NCM Autocross provides an optional venue for folks attending major events at NCM. Tire Smoke November 2011 Competition Committee Museum Notes by Metts Hardy by Carl Hoffman Adrenaline Alley The fall edition of the NCCC 14 event low-speed autocross hosted by the Nashville Corvette Club was another big success. Competitors from TN and 13 other states, some as far away as Nebraska, were on hand for the event. Of course, the event could not have happened had it not been for the hard work of a lot of volunteers. Let me first start by thanking those members who volunteered to work the course, and help with timing and staging. Without you ladies and gentlemen we couldn’t have pulled this off. Each year since we started hosting an autocross, a handful of you have graciously shown your volunteer spirit and desire for the NCC to put its best foot forward. We can only hope that more people might become involved in future events. Clubs from around the country know that the Nashville Corvette Club works hard and it’s always a pleasure to attend this event. Special thanks also to Ron Jarrell (Event Chair), Pat and Pat Thompson (Worker Coordinators) and Rita Biffle (the Lunch-Lady) for a fantastic job putting this event together and having it operate as smoothly as it did. Of course without timing, we would just be riding around the course; so another big thank you to Butch Geng and his assistants for a near flawless event. As announced at the meeting the other night, every competitor that participated in the April event returned for the October event except for a few that couldn’t due to medical issues. Drivers from throughout the eastern half of the US really like Nashville and know our club knows how to put on an event. We even had some new drivers from the NCC that seemed to enjoy getting introduced into the sport. Remember, autocross gives you the opportunity to develop and enhance your driving skill and ability. You can do it at your own pace; whatever the speed that you are most comfortable and can safely operate your vehicle. Slow or fast; safety, more than speed, is the primary concern. After the events ended on Saturday, many of us descended on Coach’s Grill for laughs, libations and stories, lots of stories. Most of the time there is as much, if not more, fun after the event. Johnny Haskell of South Carolina sat next to me at Coach’s and had me and the entire table rolling in the floor with his humor. Other competitors and visitors were equally as entertaining. If you missed the gathering afterward, you missed a lot of fun. The low-speed events in Huntsville for November 5-6 are just around the corner. There is still time if you are interested in attending either as a competitor or worker, or even a spectator. Check the flyer of www.ncccsouth.com for more information. We will also return to Huntsville December 3-4 to close out the regional competition. In between the November and December Huntsville event is the high-speed event in Savannah, GA over the Thanksgiving weekend. This is a great event not only for the speed and action on the road-course, but Recently I was at our National Corvette Museum and a very interesting thing happened. I was one of three men talking about our love for the Corvette in the parking lot. One of us had a ZO6, the other man a 1996 coupe and I have a C6 coupe. The man with the 1996 Corvette was contemplating buying a C6 and was wondering which one would suit him best. All of us agreed that a manual Grand Sport would be his best choice. We then switched the conversation over to world politics. Again we had a great conversation and had an agreement on everything we said. What was so remarkable about the conversation is one man was Jewish, another Muslim and I am a Christian. World peace broke out at the Museum. Let me encourage you to go to our museum; you might have an interesting experience too. Progress is being made with the NCM Motorsports Park. The museum is finalizing plans to present to the Bowling Green Zoning Board later this year. No problems are expected. The first item to be addressed will be building a skid pad for autocross events. In all probability there will be autocross events there no later than 2013, barring any unforeseen delays. Next year at the Museum there will be a new event called “ZpeedFest.” That is right. It is spelled with a “Z”. It will take place at Beach Bend Park and will include autocross and drag racing. Reserve the dates of June 7-9 for ZpeedFest that will be centered on speed events. I have learned the Corvette community is a large fellowship with all kinds of organizations. Our club is a NCCC club. Did you know that the Board of Directors of the National Corvette Museum always has a representative from the NCCC as a member? Information about the NCCC is always prominently displayed at the Museum and our club is considered a premier club. I continually appreciate the cooperation of our club members because that way our community can become stronger. Remember November 10-12 will be Vets‘n Vettes. Famous Quotes I don't make jokes. The website was really busy last month, almost 3000 page views, a new records for the site. Event photos and membership info continue to be a great tool for the website. From the comments at meetings we are seeing new members getting information via the website, so your input is valuable! Not only pictures, but writing an article for the newsletter is a plus and you can also possibly have your name pulled to have chance to win a Corvette from the Corvette Museum. Nobody from our club has won one yet but wouldn't it be awesome if you did, just by writing an article? Keep those pics coming and I look forward to seeing folks at the next event! The Charity Committee has been taking suggestions from members about our Angel Run in December. We don't want to reveal too much yet, but just know that your heart will go out to each of the families that we choose. The Poker Run and the Car Show and the Auto Cross have been a huge help in determining how many families we can assist this year. Funds collected from the various events during the year help meet operating expenses for the club and allow us to support various charity events during the year. I addition to the Angel Run the club has provided a Scholarship, Emergency Relief, and support to several Charitable organizations. If you would care to provide additional support to our charity cause you can do that at the Renewal Party on Oct 29 at the Thompsons. You may also contribute at a meeting or by sending a check directly to the Charity Committee. The generosity of NCC Club members is a hallmark of our organization and all support is greatly appreciated. The wrapping party will take place at the Monday, December 12 club meeting. The Angel Run will take place on Saturday, Dec 17. In addition to the Angel Run we will support dinners at the Nashville Rescue Mission on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Shiner Committee by Virgil Hollins Car Shows Now that the 3rd annual Car show is in the record books planning needs to begin for next year. If you have suggestions or can help, please contact me or one of the Car Show Committee members. The following comment really summarizes the success of our Car Show. Car Show beautiful location silent auction fair judging fun and good times see lots of great cars NCCC Governor by Mike Dill The Fall autocross at Nashville Super Speedway has come and gone for another year, and thanks to Ron Jarrell and Metts Hardy, and the many course workers, was the usual success. Only time will tell where we will run our Spring and Fall events next year. Coming up will be the Huntsville autocross event, the first weekend of November; Roebling Road high speed event held every Thanksgiving weekend; and lastly, back to Huntsville for the last autocross event of the year. I am looking forward to a busy race schedule for Cindy and myself in 2012, now that my health is returning. We have sorely missed the company of our racing friends from around the country this year. I ask that you support our new Governor in 2012, and we will hope it will be a great year for every NCC member. Remember, we need more new members. We can't let East Tennessee surpass us, so promote our club at every opportunity. (Continued from page 4) equally for the adventures in downtown Savannah when away from the track. Several of us will caravan down on Thursday, and join the racing family for a big Thanksgiving dinner at the host hotel. Then, it’s off to the track on Friday for a practice day before competition on Saturday and Sunday. They can always use corner workers or you can hang out in the pits with us. Remember, you must hold your high-speed certified to compete. For more information on autocrossing, please visit the Autocross page on the website and look to the left side of the page for “What is autocrossing?” Until next issue; Stay “on” the gas and “off” the cones! 5 Tire Smoke November 2011 night Rodder’s for a fall cruise to Manchester Square. October 16th is the Wilson County Bank car show. October 20th to 23rd is the Walland trip. Nine rooms are still available. There is no agenda for the weekend since there is so much to do in the area. Just come along and do your own “thing”. Contact Jennifer for details or to sign up. Renewal party is October 29th. We plan to take member pictures for the club directory at this event. November 12th is Arrington Vineyards with live music. November 19th is Thunderhill raceway south of Mt Pleasant. Treasurer’s Report - Mellissa Breckenridge: Car Show income was $4,612.00. Expenses were approximately $2,100.00. The O’More scholarship and several other outstanding expenses remain to come out of the total. A big thanks to everyone who supported the car show in any capacity. Melissa also provided a current Treasurer’s report for September. Museum Report: - Carl Hoffman: Thanks for autocross work support. A new event at the Museum is scheduled to kick off in 2012. The “ZpeedFest” event at Beech Bend (June 7-9) will have drag racing, autocross and several other events. Carl plans to take several club members to Bowling Green and brainstorm about how the club and the museum could work together on future autocrosses to benefit both of our organizations. Note Carl’s Museum Report for details on this. 50 / 50: Some of the drawing items were money, money, a water bottle and more money. Competition Report - Metts Hardy: Metts recognized those working the Autocross this past weekend. There were 43 participants representing 11 states. Ron Jarrell chaired the event with the club making approximate $3,700.00 in entry fees. Expenses still have to be taken from the total. Governors Report - Mike Dill: Mike noted the autocrosses coming up in November and December in Huntsville. He also presented awards from the South East Region to Butch Geng, Tim Artist and Larry Oldham. Shiner Report – Virgil Hollins: Virgil thanked everyone that worked the show and again noted the success of the event and the plus factors of the location. Almost all feedback on the show was very positive. Master Membership - Karen Johnson: Final cutoff date for Master Member points is October 31st. Be sure you check the book and it is up to date. Journalist Report - Butch Geng: Butch had two drawing this month for articles written for the September and October newsletters. Ken Miller was the winner for September and Janice Geng won for October. Butch asked that all members consider writing articles for the newsletter. The newsletter is not only for information, but is a history of what the club does each month. Articles just help to maintain that history. The Newsletter belongs to ALL club members. ANYONE can write an article. Webmaster Report - Chris Thorson: Chris again asked that anyone having pictures please send them to him for the website. Secretary – Don Hoffmeister: Don reviewed the procedure for voting at the November meeting and went over how to get an absentee ballot if anyone may not be present at the meeting and desires to complete a ballot. Nominations were again opened for club officers to be voted on in November for the 2012 NCC Board. Final nominations are provided on the sample ballot shown on the next page. The meeting adjourned at 8:14 PM. Corvette Expo By Don Hoffmeister Karen and I went to the Corvette Expo in Sevierville, TN last weekend. After the rain on the trip over Thursday, it was a beautiful weekend. What a great car event. I had never been to anything like this. It was fantastic. I needed a couple of parts for my old car. They were very easy to find. I could have ordered them on line, but that would have been no fun and this was a good excuse to go to the event. There were so many vendors there, it was just a matter of deciding which one you wanted to purchase from. “Car people” are really nice to associate with. Whether they are selling, buying or just looking, they are always polite and willing to go the extra mile to talk or help you out. There were all types of vendors: tires, new parts, old parts, wheels, neon signs, clothing, etc. There was also a vehicle auction on Saturday with a lot of great cars going across the block. They were not just Vettes either. A couple of pristine MOPAR’s were sold. Hate to admit it, but MOPAR Muscle cars are my first love. Vettes are great, but nothing compares to a Hemi Challenger or a 440 GTX. There was a large quantity of Corvettes that came to just “show and shine”. The parking lot was full of them. And there were a lot of cars just for sale on the parking lot and not going through the auction. We really enjoyed the weekend. I did have to concede about three hours at the “Outlet Mall” though. A small price to pay for the rest of the time at the Expo. 6 Tire Smoke November 2011 Nashville Corvette Club 2012 Officer Ballot & Sue Mc Gee Spirit Award Nomination Place an X next to one selection for each office Office President Nominee Vice President Jennifer Moorhouse Secretary Don Hoffmeister Treasurer Melissa Breckenridge NCCC Governor Martin Workman Master Membership Karen Johnson Journalist Butch Geng Web Master Chris Thorson (Incumbent) NCM Ambassador Carl Hoffman (Incumbent) VP Master Membership Amelia Workman Dale Johnson (Incumbent) (Incumbent) (Incumbent) (Incumbent) (Incumbent) (Incumbent) (Incumbent) Note: Write in Nominations may be entered in the blank space below the listed nominee. And with the entire front clip being hand fabbed… Mounting the brackets and making the lights fit the holes, making the holes match, and getting them to raise and lower without touching the clip was a real PITA! I had to add a bit a glass here… sand a bit off there… weld a support here, cut one there, etc etc. But they are pretty close to perfect now. And they work like a charm. Then came the mounting brackets for the grills. Again…. What a nightmare! With nothing being stock on the clip, I had to make all the brackets and get everything to fit into the existing hole. Cut a bit here, add a bit there, weld this, grind that… it took almost a week to get the lights and grills mounted and working. By the beginning of August, work was picking up again, and I almost had enough cash for the windshield and paint. Glass is cheap… but paint is not! So I changed my plan of attack on the build and decided to assemble the car mechanically and then paint it. Kind of backwards I know, but without the available cash to buy paint, I took advantage of the time I did have. Before I assembled anything though, I sprayed 2 coats of Epoxy Primer. I really like this stuff… but it is like sanding steel! My hands and arms hurt for a week after wet sanding the entire car for days. I did paint the door It has been a year since my last update on FULL TILT, and as most of you know, she is now complete. Well, almost complete. Just as I was getting into the painting stage of the build almost one year ago, work became crazy and I found myself working 18 (plus) hours a day just to keep up with the projects I had in production. That meant putting all other things, including my build, aside for the time being. Full Tilt sat alone all Winter, and through Spring. It drove me crazy to walk past her every day and not have even an hour to sand on her. But I kept working build details out in my head knowing full well that I would get back to her soon enough. The only good that this waiting period served was to allow the fiberglass to cure. So, I guess there was a bright side! Starting this past May two things happened: 1) The very labor intensive production that I had spent months working on failed. And 2) It cost me a huge amount of money to protect both my, and my company’s, reputations as a result. So that left me with A LOT of free time on my hands and absolutely no funds to build anything! And an ever growing depression! So… as the 4th of July weekend rolled around, my wonderful wife Regina looked at me one night and asked: Honey, don’t you have all the parts to finish the Vette already? And that got me thinking…. She’s right. With the exception of the paint, tires and windshield, I do have everything else piled high in the garage just waiting. On the fourth of July I started assembling Full Tilt. It is important to note here that Full Tilt had been sitting outside in the carport for almost a year now. Covered in dust, and bird droppings… she was a mess. But all the fiberglass jambs and firewall previous to assembly for a couple of reasons: 1) you can’t get to them once the doors and the engine are installed, and 2) I really wanted to see if I liked the paint that I custom blended! More about the color later. (To be continued next month) work I had done last year held up nicely. Nothing cracked and no loose seams. So I hosed her off and got the sandpaper back out again. If you recall, I was about 98% done with the bodywork when I had to stop. Let me tell you that the last 2% is a bear! Considering every panel on the car is a complex curve… it took me a month of sanding to make it perfect. And if you recall.. we have had one of the hottest summers on record. I lost 20 lbs during July and August. Sanding and building from 7am till midnight every day. It took most of July to finish all the bodywork. Including refitting the headlights. I started by cutting away almost all of the inner headlight assembly. I had previously designed a single actuator system that lifts and lowers the lights electrically from a switch on the console that had to be mounted Editorial Note: Previous articles by Robert on the rebuild can be found in earlier issues of Tire Smoke beginning with May 2009 through January 2010. The cover of the September 2011 issue is a photo of Full Tilt in her current glory. In case you are unfamiliar with the previous events, Robert had just finished a major restoration and was out for a shakedown cruise when an engine fire burnt the entire front of the car. The full story of the fire is in the January 2010 issue. Earlier issues of Tire Smoke are available on the NCC web site. 8 Tire Smoke November 2011 “DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?” NCCC SE Region Autocross By Ron Jarrell Club members Metts and Alysia Hardy, Lynn Ryder, Jessica Porter, Ron and Deborah Jarrell traveled to Knoxville, TN to represent the NCC in a SE Region Autocross on Oct 1-2. Ken has a short video clip on the Freeland web site. Be sure to check it out for a bit more information. Ken recently told me they sent off a full box of phones. But the real excitement was when the first car left the starting line. Unless there is a pylon knocked down, the excitement is continuous until there is a called “break” at the starting line. Some of these cars are amazing, not just the everyday car you drive to work or on the weekend. Racing tires, competition exhaust, roll bars, etc. But, there are also a lot of the daily drivers competing. Pass the “tech” inspection, put a number on your car, get your helmet on and move to the starting line. Anyone can drive and everyone has to have that “first time”. I keep telling myself to go ahead and try this sport. I just haven’t decided if and when I am going to have that “first time”. Come out and compete next time, or just watch. You’ll love it. 13 Tire Smoke November 2011 5333 Hickory Hollow Parkway, Antioch, TN 37013(615) 731-3000 Your local Chevrolet dealers are helping you participate in a variety of charitable causes.
