JUNE 2008 June Luncheon Features Calabasas City Mayor Mary Sue Maurer Calabasas Continues Financial Stability During Economic Downturn C hamber Members and the community are invited to meet Calabasas City Mayor Mary Sue Maurer at the June 26 Luncheon to be held at the Calabasas Country Club, 4515 Park Entrada in Calabasas. “It seems like on a daily basis we hear about the problems with our national and regional economy. Not surprisingly, the recent “CSUN San Fernando Valley Economic Report” released in May noted that the most pressing issue facing Valley businesses was the economic downturn. Experts are divided on how long this economic contraction will last or if it could get worse. So how is the City of Calabasas weathering these economically uncertain times? Calabasas continues to enjoy excellent financial stability through diverse revenue streams combined with fiscally conservative policies and strong budgetary oversight. In fact, Calabasas’s general fund is projected to actually grow slightly this fiscal year. Much of the City’s good news stems from continued strong automobile sales and sales from technology companies. The City is also continuing to minimize expenditures by reducing the need 13th Annual Calabasas Wine Tasting & Silent Auction C for outside consulting, replacing older more costly processes with more advanced and less expensive ones. The citizens of Calabasas should expect services in their City to continue with the same excellent quality they have grown to expect. Another great pride in the city is the upcoming grand opening of the Calabasas Civic Center. It seemed like just yesterday when the groundbreaking ceremony took place and the clock began on the 18 month construction schedule. The project stayed on schedule and on budget. The festivities are open to all and include a gala fundraiser for the library on Saturday, July 12th and a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on Sunday, July 13th. For more information contact John Bingham at 818-878-4225. It is my pleasure to serve this next year as the Mayor of Calabasas and I hope you will share with me your ideas on how Calabasas can continue to be a rewarding place to do business.” –Mary Sue Maurer, Mayor, City of Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer served on the staff of former Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi and former Assemblymember Fran See June Luncheon, page 5 Tuesday, June 3 ~ 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Calabasas Country Club, 4515 Park Entrada ~ Vintage Wines ~ Fabulous Gifts ~ Treasure Chests ~ ~ Delectable Hors D’oeuvres ~ Mini-Martini Bar ~ $40 per person – To RSVP, call 818.222.5680 hamber Members Thanked for Their Support. The Chamber’s Education Committee assists in the development of business leaders and encourages those efforts in our schools. As the school year comes to a close, please consider taking some time out from your busy schedule and help out. You have so much to offer in the way of advice and support. We have to remember that this year’s graduating class is the future of our business community. Every dime and every minute we spend are an investment in our future business environment. As Chamber members, we can participate in career days, read to elementary school classes, or just call up a school and ask what additional supplies they might need. For the cost of a couple of trips to Starbucks, you could pick up some paper, crayons, or special items for a craft project. With state budget cuts crippling our school system, your unsolicited offer will be met with a huge amount of appreciation. I have had the opportunity to speak about my law career to several classrooms, and I have always found it a very rewarding experience. Every age range has its own character and its own set of questions. It will provide you a new level of enthusiasm for your business once you explain to a bunch of kids why what you do is exciting and fun. I encourage you to take the time out to do the same, whether it is before school lets out, or in the fall. I also encourage you to support our yearly Bowling Tournament in August. You can start registering this month, so sign up your team now, or offer to sponsor the event in some way. Proceeds from the Cal Cup Tournament go to the education committee for the scholarships we’ll be presenting this month. The Bowling Tournament is a fun event, and you can feel good about helping your local schools at the same time. Take care, and I’ll see you around town! Legislative Update By Martin Seda, Economic & Governmental Affairs Committee Vice Chair At the May EGAC meeting, the Committee discussed Assembly Bill 3030, authored by Assembly Member Julia Brownley.
