In order to provide a more seamless journey for the patient and to prevent numerous appointments with different staff members, the Nurse Specialists amalgamated to form “The Kidney Care Team”. The team split in to two, one based at Dorset County Hospital to cover West Dorset and one based at Poole Dialysis Unit to cover the East. This meant that the Peritoneal Dialysis team, anaemia management and pre dialysis service became one team. Therefore instead of possibly 3 appointments to see: the anaemia nurse, pre- dialysis and peritoneal dialysis nurse, this would all happen at one appointment. The transplant team also come under the Kidney Care Team umbrella and work closely with us. A key part of our role is education and it became evident in the early days that one patient sharing their dialysis experience with a potential future dialysis patient, adds a dimension that the health care professional cannot provide. As a result we have held two Patient Information Days, advising patients with declining renal function, of possible treatments. It gave patients the opportunity to share concerns with their fellow renal patients and to chat on a one to one with either a patient established on peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis. The feedback was extremely positive and we hope to run more information days in the future. In addition we will be starting “Healthy Kidney” information days whereby we will advise kidney patients on ways that they can help preserve their kidney function. This is predominantly aimed at patients who have only a slight decline in their kidney function and are some way off needing dialysis. So far the feedback we have had so far has been positive. There is a more speedy response to enquiries as one nurse can address many different issues. Hopefully there is now less chance of you speaking to an answerphone! If you would like to know more about your own blood results and renal function and have not yet started dialysis, or would like to meet with one of our team, please contact us. If you would like to discuss kidney transplantation, please contact the team on the number below. My medical issues first started in 2006 with chronic hypertension, where I was diagnosed as being at stage 3 renal failure. Fortunately at that time I was treated with the appropriate drugs and care to allow me to resume a normal life. Prior to my medical issues, I lead a very healthy and active life, serving in the British forces for thirteen years seeing active service in many of the worlds, troubled locations. I left the forces in 1997 and decided to join the Dorset Police, before making the decision to go full time I decided to spend a year as a Special Constable, that year soon become six years after attending and undergoing specialist courses and training. During my time in the Police Force I experienced most of the challenges there was to experience as a front line Police officer, leaving the force in 2004, after a very traumatic incident. During my time, after leaving the British Forces and working part time as a Police Constable, I maintained the profession of a Quality, Environment, Health, Safety & Training Manager, working for companies in the UK, Europe, Australasia, and the Middle & Far East. At present I am still managing to work in this profession as much as my condition allows. On my return for the Middle East in May 2012 I become unwell and admitted to Dorset County Hospital with chronic hypertension again, the end game had finally arrived. I will never forget being told that my Kidney function had reached stage five and beyond, my whole world had folded in around me, I just couldn’t accept what I was hearing, I was forty six years old to me at that stage it was the end. The next few weeks were a rollercoaster I was an emotional wreck, I didn’t know if I was coming or going. I started Haemodialysis via a line. I had to take stock of what all this meant and tried to listen to all the medical jargon I was being told, but it wasn’t going in, I wasn’t receiving it, no matter what was being said I couldn’t cope with it, after all I had to endure and see in my life, I couldn’t accept or cope with this. I was too young and this couldn’t happen to me, so I tried to convince myself. It didn’t take long to realise that there were people who had been through this, and not only had they been through the turmoil and emotions I was going through, but for a lot longer than I had. People in a much more dire situation than me, I started to listen and look and take stock of the whole situation and realise that there was help and light at the end of this gloomy tunnel, listening to other peoples experiences and the way they coped and managed through treatment, I soon realised that not all was lost and in fact there was help and guidance available in all quarters, whether it was Doctors, Dialysis nurses, Advice groups, family or most valid of all, those people who had, and were, experiencing the same feelings and emotions, and had done for far longer than me. In the last year I have met so many Renal Failure Kidney Patients that my concerns and questions have been answered. Doctors can give you the care and the technical answers, but it takes a real person dealing themselves with a disease or a condition to answer your most inner questions. I am currently on APD after undergoing Haemodialysis and PD. I am also currently live on the Kidney Transplant list. I have spent most of my adult life fighting, helping and advising others in some area or another and now I have found myself in this situation, it is only natural and right that I give something back to those people that are going through what I have. I recently attended a dialysis awareness seminar at Dorset County Hospital, where I have been asked to give a talk on several occasions. It was there that I become aware of the Dorset Kidney Fund. I learnt very quickly through Paul & Sue Bithell what the Fund did and represented. I further researched the fund and felt that I would like to help and support this excellent fund in any way I possibly could. A toast was given in memory of Bryan Rand, who was a good friend to the DKF and always managed to get his friends to come along to the Christmas party, he will be sorely missed. ————————————————————————————————————————- CAKE STALL The cake stall, which took place on the 10th December at Dorset County Hospital raised the sum of £120, the stall was manned by Steph Vincent, Sue & Paul Bithell & Diana & Alan Crowder. Steph and Diana were also asked many questions afterwards, a lot of interest was shown by the M&S retired staff that were present, our thanks to the M&S retired staff for their generosity it is very much appreciated. —–—–-———————————————————————————————–———Presentation From Gaggle of Geese Steph Vincent Diana Crowder and Paul Bithell attended Dorset County Hospital Renal Unit to be presented with a cheque for £2750 by Mark Hammick from the Gaggle of Geese, Buckland Newton. Mark and his wife Emily held a poultry auction each year in the grounds of the Gaggle of Geese pub, all proceeds from this event are donated to local charities. Over the last two years the Dorset Kidney Fund along with Julia's House have benefited from this event. We are very grateful to Emily and Mark and thank them on behalf of the renal patients of Dorset and South Somerset. This donation will go towards the implementation of the Home Haemo programme, currently being set up by DCH and the DKF. __________________________________________________________________________ Easter Cake Stall A cake stall was held at DCH outpatients department on the 25th March 2013, a total of £128.32p was made from the sale of cakes, £111.14p of this was spent on replacing the fish tank in the renal unit waiting room, the old tank was leaking and the air pump was not working. Thanks to all those that contributed cakes also to those that assisted on the stall 7 Owermoigne Flower Festival at Athelampton House This year we were thrilled to celebrate our 20th Annual Festival, the title being “The Roaring 20’s”. This was a 5 day event. We are very privileged to be able to hold our big event in Athelhampton House. Members love having a chance to decorate spaces much larger than usual. Most members take part in helping. All the tips and training gleaned from club meetings are used in the displays we use to decorate the house. We start to plan our arrangements several months in advance. This year’s theme made quite a few of us scratch our heads and dig deep into the internet, libraries etc. to research possible titles. It always amazes me that a common theme can be portrayed in so many different ways using a variety of all different styles of arranging from traditional to modern and with worldwide influences. There is a terrific atmosphere whilst we are staging the show. Over the years we have collected over £17,250 for local charities. The charity collection this year has been donated to ‘The Dorset Kidney Fund’.
