Greetings from President Lesley Carthew
Hello Everyone, and welcome to “Spotlight” for August.
As I was doing some research for this letter, I found the following quote –
“I think human beings are really interesting. To me that’s the whole point of theatre.
The whole point of theatre is us being able to look at a story, or listen to a song, or
see something on stage and us feel less alone as human beings, to feel connected
to other people. And the best theatre does that, the best theatre has universal
themes in it, and makes you feel connected to humanity”. And thus said Emily
Skinner. Emily Skinner is an American Musical Theatre actress who has played
leading roles, amongst others in, Jekyll and Hyde, The Full Monty, Billy Elliott,
Dreamgirls and the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Since my last letter, I have not been to any musical theatre productions, however I’ve
been to see an excellent production of “Glide Time” in Waipukurau, and the Indian
Ink Production of “Kiss the Fish”, both quite different pieces of theatre, but both
excellent. However next week, I go back to Musicals with Theatre Hawkes Bay’s
“Grease”, and North Shore Music Theatre’s “Hairspray”, and I am looking forward to
both.
The Executive has been extremely busy travelling the country, with the MTNZ “Into
the Future Roadshow”. I am extremely grateful to Vice President Terry, along with
General Manager Kate, and all the Zone Reps, for all the time and effort they have
put into making these sessions such a success. I would also like to publicly thank
through this letter, Aaron Tindell from North Shore Music Theatre, who has travelled
with us, and been a huge help to all of us in garnering the wealth of information we
have amassed.
Special thanks also to all the societies who have hosted the Executive and attendees
as we travelled the country, we are very grateful. By the time we wind up the
roadshows there will have been 14 forums, I personally have now attended the two
in Zone Three, and will attend the Wellington presentation next week. My
experiences in both Palmerston North and Napier, have been fantastic, and I am
sure that all attendees have come away from the presentations, with a far better
insight of what MTNZ does, and hopefully enthusiastic about where we are heading
in the future. Thank you to everyone who has attended the presentations, I hope you
have found them beneficial. I look forward to joining with Terry and Kate, as we
formulate the final document to be presented to you the members at our Annual
General Meeting in Christchurch in March. I can only encourage you all to start
saving now, in order to attend this event, I know Christchurch are well on the way to
giving us a wonderful conference and I thank Violet Blay, Diane Brodie and Kate for
their work on conference thus far. We have some very exciting seminars confirmed
already and you won’t want to miss out. Speaking of events in Christchurch, we
have our Christchurch Workshop Weekend at the end of the month, which I also
encourage you to participate in and send your members along. We have also
implemented a Next Gen/Youth Initiative around these workshops and I encourage
our society members to make the most of this opportunity.
Yours in Theatre
Lesley.

A fantastic opportunity for our MTNZ Societies
TWO FREE REGISTRATIONS ON OFFER FOR YOUR
YOUTH/NEXT GEN MEMBERS
Dear MTNZ Society Members
In line with our current Youth/Next Gen Initiative, the Executive of MTNZ would like
to offer each MTNZ Society member two FREE registrations for your Youth/Next
Gen members (minimum age 18 as there won’t be “on hand” supervision at the
venue) to attend the workshops in Christchurch 30 – 31 August.
This is a fantastic opportunity for any youth members you have either on your
committee or in your membership who have shown an interest in directing, stage
and/or production management and musical directing to attend a 101 workshop and
learn from tutors who work professionally in the arts and entertainment industry in
New Zealand. These people are some of the best in the business.
The nominating society, however, will have to cover any other expenses associated
with attendance – ie. transport, accommodation, catering.
Please email [email protected] to get a Next Gen registration pack and if you could
please register your attendees by 22 August, that would be appreciated.
If you have any questions or require clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact
Kate or your Zone Rep.
We look forward to your ongoing support of encouraging the Next Gen in our
community theatres – they are our future.
Warmest regards
Lesley Carthew

Our Tutors
Rhonda Daverne As a professional dancer, ballet and jazz
teacher, then musical theatre performer it seemed a natural
transition for Rhonda Daverne to become firstly a Choreographer
then Director.
For the past 30 years she has become known and respected for
her achievements throughout Auckland in the dual role of
Director and Choreographer. She has worked with many talented
performers in this capacity and takes great pleasure and pride in
seeing many of these young people progress to professional
theatre both here and overseas.
Although Rhonda has worked for many theatre groups in the region she has been more
closely affiliated with North Shore Music Theatre (NSMT) having directed and
choreographed many of their most successful shows including Jesus Christ Superstar,
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (twice), Godspell (twice), Anything Goes,
the New Zealand Premier of La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line – the first musical
theatre production to be performed in the newly built Bruce Mason Theatre in Takapuna.
Rhonda was also responsible for conceiving and directing NSMT ‘25th Anniversary’ and ‘30th
Anniversary’ Concerts and in 2103 for organising the functions and celebrations for the
society’s 50th anniversary weekend. To further her knowledge, throughout the years, she
became keenly involved in all aspects of musical theatre; as a tutor/mentor, Business
Manager, Production Coordinator, Marketing Manager, Programme Designer, Lighting
Operator, Front of House Manager, Stage Crew and of course as a performer. She has
been actively involved in the Northern Area Performing Theatre Awards (NAPTA), winning
best show for ‘42nd St’ at Harlequin Musical Theatre and then receiving four ‘best performed
choreography’ Naptas in the following years. She has directed and choreographed the
‘Awards Night Entertainment’ three times, been a judge and presenter over two years and
most recently in 2013 and 2014 was Convener of Judges for the Napta organisation.
Rhonda is a Life Member and past President of NSMT and the recipient of a Civic Honour
from the North Shore City Council for her outstanding contribution to theatre. In 2007 she
received a Merit Award from MTNZ for which she is most proud. Rhonda recently
presented a seminar on “Directing 101” at the 2014 MTNZ annual conference in Napier and
was also on the “Auditioning for a Show” panel with Richard Marrett and Tessa-May Brown.
2014 proves to be another busy year for Rhonda with three productions on the go. Godspell
at Centrestage, Hairspray at Sky City for NSMT then Chess for Blenheim Musical Theatre.
Appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2002 some of her many duties include work at the IRD
and manning the JP service desk. She is married to Chris and with their dog Molly they
enjoy relaxing in their Takapuna home or at their beach house on the Awhitu Peninsula.
Kathryn Osborne has spent 30 years working behind the scenes in
theatre in New Zealand, starting with recreation theatre groups in
Auckland. Currently employed as the Stage Manager for the Royal NZ
Ballet, she has toured NZ, UK, France, China and the USA with them.
She was the Technical Manager / Stage Manager / Company Manager
for New Zealand Opera between 1999 – 2009 which saw her involved in
40 opera shows and the creation of the Onehunga Technical Centre. As
Stage Manager for Stetson Productions she has toured Starlight
Express, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Blood Brothers and The
Original Phantom of the Opera around NZ, Australia, Korea and Japan.
Her management skills were used for the APEC Leaders dinner in
Auckland and the Mission / Millbrook outdoor concerts for IMG. She lectures in Stage
Management at Toi Whakaarei and has been very active in the NZQA review of Technical
Qualifications and the creation of proposed industry work based qualifications in technical
theatre.

Annie Pearce has over the past 15 years, coordinated events at major
venues including the Westpac Centre, the Christchurch Town Hall and the

Annie has been the Production Manager for Cats, Miss Saigon, Starry Nights
(Showbiz Christchurch), 42nd Street, Curtains, Cats, Guys & Dolls, Beauty & the
Beast and Hair (CPIT’s NASDA) to name a few.
Richard Marrett is a Principal Lecturer at CPIT and head of

Hagley Park with Christchurch Symphony as part of the city's Summertimes programme,
and in numerous cabaret performances. For ARTCO he created the score for the musical
version of Once Were Warriors, and productions for NASDA include Lil’ Abner, Into The
Woods, Urinetown, The Witches Of Eastwick, Oklahoma, The Music Man, 42nd Street,
Curtains, Cats, Hair, Once On This Island and Sideshow.
Following the successful concert Broadway Broads, he devised the musical theatre tribute
concerts – Rodgers and Hammerstein and Bernstein and Sondheim with the Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra and this year added The Magical Music of Disney to his repertoire of
popular orchestral offerings. In 2009 and 2011 he was director of the Musical Theatre
programme at the NZ National Singing School in Napier and in the past two years has been
consulting for the New Zealand Musical Theatre Consortiums, creating the touring music
solutions for Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera and Mamma Mia. Richard recently presented
a seminar on “Click Tracks” at our annual conference in Napier and was also on the
“Auditioning for a Show” panel with Rhonda Daverne and Tessa-May Brown.

To all MTNZ Societies
As many of you know the rights for Evita have been recently released by
Origin. Last weekend a meeting was convened of five societies who have
obtained the rights for their respective cities and who were interested in
sharing resources for this production. They are Showbiz Christchurch,
Rotorua Musical Theatre, Hamilton Operatic Society, New Plymouth
Operatic and Auckland Music Theatre.
One of the outcomes of the meeting was that we agreed that we should
canvas interest from any other MTNZ members who may wish to join the consortium or may
want to consider a hire of the product in the future.
Below is a summary of the key outcomes of the meeting and a schedule outlining the timing
of each of the planned productions.
The key outcomes of the meeting were:
A consortium will be formed to commission the build of a set and costumes for the above
societies. The earliest season would be in September 2015, to allow time for design and
construction of set and costumes
A Chairperson (myself) was appointed to oversee the management of the project.
A preliminary discussion was held on budget levels and capped contribution of $30,000 each
was agreed upon.
A project management team was appointed being Chairperson Di Brodie (Showbiz
Christchurch), Patrick Landigan (New Plymouth Operatic) and Grant Meese (Amici)
The project team were to start discussions with one of New Zealand’s top creative designers
to garner interest and availability for designing the set and costumes.
The set to be constructed would be for larger venues, and all members of this partnership
would need to ensure their venue had a full fly floor facility and a minimum proscenium arch
width of 9.0m.
The meeting also agreed we should canvas interest from any other MTNZ members who
may wish to join the consortium or may want to consider a hire of the product.
A further meeting will be convened in mid-August to formalise the Consortium arrangement.

Showbiz Queenstown is excited to announce our 2015
production is Saturday Night Fever.
Australian and New Zealand community theatres are the
first in the world to be given permission to stage this
iconic musical – to date we’re the only New Zealand
theatre group who have the rights, so it could be a New
Zealand premiere.
The movie (which the musical is based on) is
credited with defining the 1970's, the sound track sold
25,000,000 copies. Since it debuted on Broadway the
musical adaptation has set pulses racing around the
world. It was described by one reviewer as a "one of a
kind miracle in song, dance and simplicity."
The central character is a 19 year old in a job going
nowhere whose life lights up on the disco floor.
The music by the Bee Gees includes their classic hits Stayin Alive, Night Fever,
More than a Woman and How Deep is Your Love.
It has a large cast with terrific ensemble dancing opportunities.
We’re on the hunt for the right director to bring this magical musical to our
Queenstown audiences.
Interested?
Exact dates will be confirmed in consultation with the professional team, but will be
approximately:
 October or early November 2014 – a pre-audition workshop, to be run by the
director and musical director
 February 2015 (13, 14 15; or 20, 21, 22) Auditions
 Early April – director’s rehearsals start
 May 14 or 21 – Opening Night
While the ideal might be a director/choreographer, we do have amazingly talented
choreographers in Queenstown, so choreography isn’t essential.
We’d like to have our professional team in place by the end of August this year, so
would appreciate a response from you by 20 August.
If you’re interested, please advise
 your availability around the date guidelines above
 an outline of why you would like to direct Saturday Night Fever in
Queenstown
 your experience with this genre of musical
 your fee expectation, and another financial requirements (e.g. travel,
accommodation)
Many thanks, we look forward to hearing from you by 20 August.

"New York Nights Live" started its life as an open mic night for musical theatre performers,
but has since developed into a performance platform that can include dance, acting, spoken
word, instrumentals, or singing. Performers can bring an mp3, play the instruments
themselves, or bring sheet music for our live band.
This event exists for two primary reasons:
1. To offer performers an opportunity to showcase their talent in a supportive and vibrant
environment outside of a "show" or "audition" context.
2. To expand the musical theatre community by engaging with the public who would not
normally connect with musical theatre.
In order to accomplish the latter, the New York Nights team decided to move it out of its
previous theatre home, and into Auckland's best live music venue- "The Portland Public
house" in Kingsland. The logic being if we can't get the public to the theatre, they'll take the
theatre to the public.
This choice was validated at the June event when the venue was so packed with people who
wanted to watch, and perform, that many were turned away at the door.
The night was a brilliant success and showcased many talented singers and musicians from
both the community theatre scene, and the professional world, including guest performances
by number one recording artists Ginny Blackmore and Stan Walker, and Moorhouse- Who
brought down the house with a number of fantastic songs. The highlight of the night was
definitely Stan Walker's impromptu version of "The Circle of Life" from the "Lion King".
"New York Nights live" occurs on the last Sunday of each month at "The Portland Public
House" in Kingsland, Auckland, and is open for you to come along and perform, or support.
Please bring your friends to this brilliant night of music,
fun, laughter, and incredible talent. Get along and help
build the Musical theatre community of Auckland in a
fun and engaging way.
Head to www.newyorknights.co.nz for more
information, or to register.

Qantas presents: The Music is Bond 8pm, 21 August, Auckland Town Hall
Fast cars, nifty gadgets, dangerous escapes, beautiful women and devious villains are key
components to any Bond film, but you don’t truly have a 007 movie without its music. Over the past
50 years the Bond movies have featured signature tracks with the stars of the day, from Louis
Armstrong, to Madonna and Adele to name a few. It’s the big orchestral movements and voices
like Shirley Bassey’s in ‘Goldfinger’ that give you that Bond feel, and the guitar riffs and swinging
strings from Monty Norman’s theme tune that bring out your inner spy. From ‘You only live twice’ to
‘Diamonds are Forever’, the APO has all your favourite Bond classics on 21 August – LIVE in the
Aotea Centre. Join us as we bring to life the suspense, the driving rhythms and the glitz of
cinema’s most famous MI5 agent in this one-off concert, featuring a talented line-up of singers led
by host Tim Beveridge. Be sure to come “dressed to kill”; get your picture taken with luxury Jaguar

MUSICAL THEATRE GISBORNE
Musical Theatre Gisborne’s last production in June was a musicalized version of the old
British TV comedy, “Hi De Hi”. Although this show wasn’t a great financial success, it was a
lot of fun and enjoyed by both cast and audience. It was pleasing to have some young
people new to theatre along with some of our stalwarts in the cast. Perhaps in the future a
musicalized version of “The Vicar of Dibley” might be considered.
We are already planning a Christmas pantomime for staging in mid- December and will need
to use an familiar venue, possibly the Gisborne Boys’ High School Hall. By then the school
year will be finished but we are still uncertain of its limitations and possibilities.
The choosing of which panto to do was easy, but the deciding on which version wasn’t. It is
surprising when using our “old friend” google, how many different versions of “Jack and the
Beanstalk” there are. However, they all star - the cow, so now we hope to find a theatre
group which has already done “Jack” and has a cow tethered somewhere out the back of
their Clubrooms. Gisborne is more grapes, logs and kiwi fruit than cows, so we would
appreciate hearing from any group with a well-trained cow!!

Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado”
Wellington G&S Light Opera (aka WGSLO) is taking The Mikado to audiences this July
through to September, touring Lower Hutt, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Kapiti, and closing
in Wellington. It tours with a cast of 40 singers and 24 players to Sullivan’s original
orchestration.
WGSLO has years of experience coping with the logistics of moving
such forces around the countryside, but Nature has been known to
intrude. In 2010 the closure of SH2 by slips prevented a performance
in Wanganui. The next year during a performance of HMS Pinafore in
Kapiti, a cyclonic storm passed through, uprooting massive trees. It
drowned out the cast with hail on the roof. This din receded, to be
capped off with a loud and rolling thunderclap as Captain Corcoran
cracked the cat o’ nine tails. The chorus responded “Goodness me!
Why, what was that?” to general merriment. Last year a matinee in
Palmerston North was cut short at the start of the finale by the 21 July
Seddon earthquake, with swinging of chandeliers and hastily lowered
curtain and house lights up with some patrons in retreat. We trust that
the excitement will all remain on-stage for this year’s Mikado.
Direction is a classic interpretation, with full sets and wardrobe, and a seasoning of updated
references. Both Ko-Ko, the Lord High (I’ve got a little list) Executioner and the Mikado (to
make the punishment fit the crime) single out the categories of social miscreants we all so
love to deplore – a rich mine with plenty of latter day targets to dig into! The production is in
the final stages of rehearsal , and the music and wit is delighting the cast just as it looks well
set to delight tour audiences. Gilbert’s ingenious wit provides depths of double-entendre and
combines with Sullivan’s eclectic range of sparkling music to make The Mikado the most
popular Comic Opera of all time. WGSLO has set out to encourage attendance by families
and young persons with special concession rates including school-age. More details, and
links to bookings are on the Wellington G&S Light Opera website www.gns.org.nz.

THE FILM
The wait is over! Finally the Great New Zealand
Musical has been written.
“Tikitikitanga” is an all singing all dancing musical set
in the 1880s featuring important local events such as
Parihaka, the gold rush and the Tarawera volcano.
Thrill to the spectacle of six talented
actor/singer/dancers telling a timeless story of love
and betrayal. Be amazed at the wide variety of
musical styles from folk music to fifties. Loosely
based on Emily Bronte’s classic novel Wuthering
Heights, “Tikitikitanga” is a toe-tapping hit destined
for Broadway. If only…
You are invited to the Dress rehearsal of
“Tikitikitanga”. The last run of the show before the
public gets to see it. The last chance to get
everything right before the critics air their views. It’s
the run that keeps on going no matter what arises.
And we all know the legend “a bad dress means a great opening”
Which means “Tikitikitanga” is going to be a smash…
What should be a smooth rehearsal instead turns in to every performer’s worst nightmare.
But somehow, even with forgotten lyrics, infidelities, concussion, laryngitis, unrequited love,
requited love, and the departure of a major cast member, the show goes on and the entire
musical is performed.

World Premiere! Call for expressions of interest
LAST DANCE, the musical
Acclaimed writer April Phillips whose hit shows include “STiFF”, “Death & Taxes”, “Bonking
James Bond”, and “Motel” has written a new jukebox musical featuring the music of the
Queen of Disco; Donna Summer.
In the same way that “Mamma Mia”, “We Will Rock You”, and “Movin’ Out” weave a story
around the hit catalogue of legendary artists like ABBA, Queen and Billy Joel, Phillips’
exciting new show will have audiences dancing in their seats with a disco soundtrack that’s
infectious, dramatic and thrilling!
Last Dance has a storyline with all the energy and excitement of a big stage musical, but
also and the grit and tension of a crime story. It is peopled with characters who are driven by
ambition, lust, greed, desperation, fear and love.
Featuring 20 hits songs including “Hot Stuff”, “Last Dance”, “She Works Hard For The
Money”, “Bad Girls”, “Heaven Knows”, “MacArthur Park”, “I Feel Love”, “Love To Love You
Baby”, “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)”. To read more about the show, visit
www.lastdancemusical.com
Last Dance is set in 1983 so it’s a gift for the wardrobe department! Neon colours, big hair
and big shoulder pads, leg warmers, and lots of disco bling! Your props team will have fun
sourcing rubik cubes, disco balls, ghetto blasters, and a giant mobile phone! Your
choreographer will be challenged and inspired by the varying pace of the iconic disco songs
and the nightclub and prison settings – think break-dancing; think “Chicago” and “Cabaret”,
and the bar scenes from the movie “Flashdance”. Sexy, energetic, dramatic, desperate,
romantic.
Your set and lighting designers will be excited by a variety of scenes and musical
sequences:
Pulsating, intense, moody, reality and dream-like.
The premiere company will be able to create and then hire out its sets and props to
subsequent productions. Sheet music will be provided. Music rights are available.
April is calling for expressions of interest from companies who would be interested in
mounting the world premiere production of “Last Dance”. If you would like to read the script,
please email Playmarket at [email protected].
The deadline for expressions of interest is 30 September 2014.

Addams
THE ADDAMS FAMILY features an original story, and it's
every father's nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate
princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a
sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man
her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting
enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not
to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a
secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the
fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's 'normal' boyfriend and his parents.
Cast: Gomez Addams, Morticia Addams, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday Addams,
Pugsley Addams, Lurch, Mal Beineke, Alice Beineke, Lucas Beineke The Addams Ancestors
(Ghosts) - 5m, 5w or as many as desired
Do not "Move Toward The Darkness" this musical works with minimum set and props and

Wellington Repertory recently staged this at the Gryphon Theatre, which is a small 80 seat
venue – and it worked really well. Very suitable for smaller groups and venues.

What is The Junior Theatre Project?
“Musicals: The Superfood of the Arts!” Tim McDonald
Musicals may probably be the most collaborative of all art forms and brings together
many facets of the arts industry: music, singing, acting, dancing, costume design, set
building, painting and lighting among others. Everyone involved has a role to play
(large or small) and their role is integral to the finished product – whether they are on
stage or off. Each person learns responsibility, collaboration, respect, self-confidence
& co-operation – and these vital life-skills are just the beginning. Seeing a need to
make musicals more accessible and attainable for kids of all ages Music Theatre
International in conjunction with Hal Leonard Australia have developed a collection of
musicals tailor-made for young performers.
What does the Train the Trainers Intensive involve?
A full day of workshops for Music, Drama, Dance and general classroom teachers
and practitioners. We cover how to develop a musical theatre program in your school
or musical society through practical classes and forums with leading industry
professionals.
Why do the Train the Trainers Intensive?
Because everyone can use a little inspiration and we can’t wait to share our learning
with you!
Because we’ve got answers to your challenges. Budget cuts, administrators who
don’t get it, dealing with parents, recruiting talent, selecting the perfect musical,
properly managing resources – we cover it all!
Because everyone needs to recharge their batteries. It’s important to remember why
you started doing musicals with kids in the first place and to renew that passion.
Because nobody else teaches you how. There is no other program anywhere that
teaches you how to put on a Junior musical with kids. And occasionally we all feel
insecure even when we’re doing a great job. We’ll reinforce what works, and help
you build skills in areas where you feel challenged.
Our Junior Theatre Project is designed to empower teachers and
theatre practitioners as well as inspire and develop young performers.
To read more about this initiative please visit our website.
What do you get?
The Train the Trainers Intensive includes:
• Workshops with leading professional theatrical practitioners.
• Workshop tote bag that includes CD samplers, Production
 Handbook (A Guide to Putting on a Musical), discount
 Vouchers for your next show and much more.
 Morning Tea & Lunch
