STUDIO MEALS ACCOMMODATIONS
STUDIO
My studio/home is located on the edge of La
Conner overlooking Skagit valley farmlands and
the Cascades. We have a big open light workshop
area with all the supplies you will need on hand.
There are wonderful restaurants, accommodations, the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum, and
shopping all
within walking distance
of my studio!
Each day’s
session lasts
from 9 AM to
4 PM, with
a break for
lunch. You
are welcome to stay later to work in the studio or
leave early to sightsee, fabric shop, or visit the La
Conner Quilt Museum!
MEALS
A hearty, healthy lunch
will be served at noon
with coffee and tea available throughout the day.
IMPORTANT! Please let
us know if you have any
dietary restrictions ahead
of time so that we may try

Fat quarter of cyanotype cotton
Discover the art of cyanotype and how to combine
it effectively with sashiko! We will cover how to
choose the right supplies for sashiko, techniques
for perfect stitches, and how to adapt designs for
sashiko and cyanotype. Using foliage and transparency overlays, we will experiment with cyanotype—a UV photographic printing process that
produces cloth in shades of blue and indigo.

Cyanotype cotton
Pimatex cotton and procion dyes for ice dyeing

Join us for 3 days of informal, creative fun in our new
home and studio! This is a rare opportunity to learn
from Kitty Pippen, a master designer, and to see her
incredible quilts up close. We will explore design concepts and demonstrate sashiko and appliqué techniques. Bring your ideas!
Experiment with cyanotype, an old photographic process using sunlight or UV lights to produce beautiful
images on cotton in shades of indigo—perfect when
combined with sashiko. Try a batch of ice procion
dyeing, a very serendipitous and effective way to
make your own appliqué fabric. Kitty and I will also
show quilts and demonstrate our finishing techniques.

Pattern of your choice from Exotics Series
Background and appliqué fabrics
Add some flamboyant color to brighten up the
winter and make a block from Exotics: Flowers
from the Tropics. Choose one of 8 flower blocks
and learn pattern transfer, hand sashiko techniques, and how to choose and fussy cut fabrics
to create realistic dimensional flowers. Discover
how to easily pre-form perfect hand appliqué
shapes with press-over heat resistant Mylar and
the “sticky label on top” appliqué methods. Learn
the invisible appliqué stitch, how to make sharp
points, smooth concave and convex curves, and
how to add simple embroidery embellishment.
The fine points of finishing and quilting will be
demonstrated.
