The Vibrant Colors of Skagit Valley and Butchart Gardens
with Charles Needle and Mark S. Johnson
Two world-class instructors, two breathtaking gardens,
Two Luxurious Hotels, and one unforgettable week of photography!
From there, we’ll travel by ferry from Anacortes, WA to Vancouver Island, BC (Canada) on our way to a five-star oceanfront
resort and spa on pristine Brentwood Bay, located minutes from the world-renowned Butchart Gardens. As one of the world’s
premier floral show gardens, Butchart features 55 acres of awe-inspiring splendor—including a classical Italian garden, a
Japanese garden, a rose garden, and the dramatic Sunken Garden.
With a combined 17 years of teaching experience, Charles and Mark will guide you with exuberant, personalized attention
both in the field and classroom, sharing extraordinary creative image-making techniques that will inspire you to develop your
own vision, expand your photographic horizons, and create images previously unimaginable.
In addition to field instruction, you will experience post-capture classroom lectures and supportive image evaluations. Field
instruction emphasizes creative macro, impressionistic flower, intimate landscape, and garden photography. Classroom
instruction features a variety of montaging techniques developed by Mark, as well as an exploration of methods for creating
photos with jaw-dropping impact. This is a digital capture and darkroom workshop that permits students to capture images in
early-morning and late-afternoon/evening light and begin experimenting with them in the classroom shortly thereafter.
