WWE® Superstar The Miz Promises
to Beat All His Rivals Including John
Cena During the RAW World Tour
Get ready for the bone crunching action of the WWE RAW World Tour!
This Thursday ZSC prepares itself for the
arrival of the world’s top wrestling stars
as the RAW World Tour comes to town.
WWE Superstars The Miz, John Cena,
Chris Jericho and CM Punk are all
preparing themselves for a battle royale
at the International Tennis Complex at
ZSC from 9 -11 February.
It will be the first live show in Abu Dhabi
and it is testament to ZSC’s management
and facilities that the International Tennis
Complex will be the venue for this
awesome event.
As the contenders prepare, one wrestler
has already started the pre-show fireworks
claiming that he will be unbeaten across
the whole three-day event. Mike Mizanin,
better known as The Miz, the only wrestler
to have held the prestigious WWE United
States Championship twice, has already
boasted that he will reign supreme
over his competitors, in the run up to
Thursday’s event.
The Miz has been in fighting form,
claiming that he will win as he “always”
does, because he is “smarter” than his
rivals, as he strives to be the “biggest
star the world has ever seen”. With a
repertoire of moves that include the
Neckbreaker, the Half Nelson Facebuster
and the Skull Crushing Finale, The Miz
will be one to watch out for.
The self proclaimed “Awesome One”
plans to use every underhand trick
to win the event, but will have to be
at his cheating best to overcome the
other contestants. “Take a mental note,
because when I come to Abu Dhabi,
I’m the bad guy. You look at me and my
size and you probably think, ‘I can take
this guy’. But the fact is I will backstab
anyone to win. The boos, jeers and
catcalls of the crowd? Bring it on,” The
Miz said. “I embrace it. It just fuels my fire
to win. I am the guy you’re going to boo
for the rest of your life.”
It looks like its going to an event of seismic
proportions this weekend at ZSC. So

Are there special rates
for children?
If you have a child under the age of
two who will sit on your lap, no ticket is
required. If you want a seat for your child
under two, you must purchase a separate
ticket for him or her. Any person aged
two or older on the day of the show must
purchase a ticket.
How do I get there?
Zayed Sports City is located on Airport
Road behind Carrefour. Use entrances 6
and 12 to get to the International Tennis
Complex. Please make sure you bring your
ticket with you. You can download the
ZSC location map on www.zsc.ae or from
maps.google.com.
What are the prohibited
items for the event?

Record Runner Numbers for the Second Zayed
Sports City 10km Run Presented by ADCB

The second of the three Zayed Sports
City 10km runs, presented by ADCB, took
place on the morning of 20 January. With
hundreds of participants, the race series
is continuing to grow in popularity and
is specifically designed to help runners
measure their progress throughout the
UAE running season. The three-race
series also gives runners the chance to
set themselves personal goals to work
towards during the winter months.
To make the run more meaningful for the
community, proceeds for the event were
donated to the Special Care Center in Abu
Dhabi. Participants were also encouraged
to bring along their old trainers for
collection by Good Soles. The used shoes
will be distributed to others in need.
The run gave athletes the chance to enjoy
closed roads at Zayed Sports City, as well
as a lap around the Zayed Stadium main
pitch. Once finished, runners could visit
the ADCB Stretch Zone to help lessen
the pain of muscle recovery. Professional
stretch sessions from the fitness experts at
Haddins were much appreciated by aching
calves and quads alike.

On 24 January the official launch of
the Abu Dhabi Corporate Games
2012 took place at Zayed Sports City.
The Corporate Games Team, Abu
Dhabi Sports Council and newly
announced Sport Patron, UAE National
Football Team Captain Subait Khater,
enjoyed some ‘taster’ sports and
answered questions for the many
journalists in attendance.
Corporate Games is the world’s largest
multi-sport festival for businesses and
the first Abu Dhabi edition will be held
between 21-24 November, under the
patronage of H.E Sheikh Nahayan

Abu Dhabi
Health and
Fitness Day
On Sunday 22 and Monday 23 January,
Zayed Sports City showcased its facilities
at the very first Health and Fitness Fun Day
in Abu Dhabi. Held at ADNEC, the event
was aimed at school age children and was
designed to educate them about aspects
of health and fitness they might not be
aware of.
ZSC worked closely with partners including
PSS Emirates, Just Padel, ADISC,
Manchester City School of Football,
Harlequins, Jump Sports and Haddins to
create a completely interactive area at the
event. Children had the opportunity to play
their favourite sports, as well as sample
activities they had never tried before.
Jennifer Williams, an employee at the
stand, said, “It is an amazing opportunity
for kids and parents to see what ZSC
really has to offer. We have met over
8,000 children in two days and it has been
amazing to see how excited they all were
about the sports that they can take part in.”

The ITF’s Tennis Stay & Play Campaign
centres around the slogan “serve, rally and
score” and the recommendation that new
beginners play the game from the first lesson.
The campaign is supported by the top ITF

The Perfect Preparation for
the African Cup of Nations
January saw the arrival of three international
football teams at Zayed Sports City. A
perfect winter training destination, the UAE
has a lot to offer teams who are looking for a
peaceful getaway to focus on their training.
The professional standard pitches at ZSC
became the home to the Ivory Coast
national team for nearly two weeks while
they prepared their game for the start of the
African Cup of Nations which began on 22
January. In the impressive Zayed Football
Stadium, Ivory Coast played a friendly match
against Tunisia, showcasing some of their
most famous names including Toure, Drogba
and Gervinho to an enthusiastic crowd.

Abu Dhabi Harlequins
Ladies Rugby Tournament
On Friday 13 January the Abu Dhabi
Harlequins ladies teams, the Bats and
the Quins, hosted their annual ladies
tournament. With 12 teams competing
from all over the Gulf region, the event
was exciting for all who participated and
even more exciting for those watching
from the sidelines. Running for five hours in
unseasonably hot weather, the girls revived
themselves after the tournament with an
event in the Clubhouse. They were joined
for the event by the Harlequins men’s team
who also had a home fixture on the day and
beat their opponents 39-15.

PSS School
Circuit Results
The PSS school circuit at Zayed Sports
City concluded in great style with two
finals of very high quality. In the U10
category PSS triumphed with two players
enrolled in the PSS Academy. Winner
Arthur O’Sullivan beat Adil Khan after a
thrilling match. At the end there was a
nice prize presentation with gift bags for all
players, and all winners won a brand new
racket provided by Wilson, as did three
lucky kids whose names were picked out
during the raffle.

a Day to Remember
As the most decorated and consistent
US Figure Skater of the last decade,
Evan Lysacek is well-known among figure
skating fans. Since 2006, Evan has won
outright or captured a medal in every event
he has entered. His achievements include
two-time US Champion, two-time Four
Continents Champion, Skate America
Champion, Cup of China Champion, ISU
Grand Prix Final Champion, 2009 World
Champion and, at the 2010 Vancouver
Games, he became the first US male figure
skater in 22 years to win Olympic Gold.
In January Zayed Sports City welcomed
Evan to Abu Dhabi Ice Rink. With the
recently refurbished facilities as well as

a brand new Olympic-sized ice surface,
it was the ideal place for Evan to train.
Consummate professional that he is,
Evan took valuable time out of his training
schedule to share some of his knowledge
and experience with the members of
the Abu Dhabi Figure Skating Team
(ADFST) by offering a master class for the
young skaters. The class took place on
Friday 28 January and was a wonderful
opportunity for the team to learn from the
Olympic champion. It is fair to say that
Evan provided ADFST with a once-in-alifetime experience and it will be a long
time before these young skaters will get
over the excitement or forget the skills
they were taught.

Padel Tennis
ZSC and Just Padel took part in the two-day
Health and Fitness Fun Day held at ADNEC
with a very positive result. Just Padel was
present, working with Zayed Sports City
to show 8,000 children how to play Padel
Tennis. The expression on the young people’s
faces showed great interest and enjoyment
in this spectacular sport. The Federation
Spanish coach, Luis Gonzalez, was
commissioned to conduct the classes.
“We believe these kinds of events
are very beneficial to the youth of
this country, and as always, Just
Padel goes a long way to support the
development of the regional youth,”
commented Luis Gonzales, Head
Coach of Just Padel, “The experience
has been very rewarding for us, and
hopefully for those attending the event
it was the same.” added Gonzales. “I
am grateful for the opportunity given
to us and look forward to attending
more of these events.”

Both bowlers started with strike after strike
and the crowd was cheering the fantastic
performance of these two inspirational
men. Going into the seventh frame Michael
bowled an open frame at which point
everyone thought it was all over, until
Mohamed also bowled an open frame!
Then it was strikes all the way to the tenth
frame. Michael narrowly beat Mohamed
267 to 265. Game two was underway
next, the final deciding game, and
Michael continued his strong performance
throughout the ten frames, finally beating
Mohamed 234 to 182 and claiming the title.
Bowler of
the Year 2011
After a year of strong competition, the
Bowler of the Year Champion 2011 was
determined on 14 January. The 12 Bowler
of the Month Champions from 2011 started
strong with high scoring games, with a
very close match between the top three.
Bowling for places in the final were Hassan
Al Zaabi, Michael Bruenjes and Hashim Al
Hashmi who were fighting for second and
third places, as the leader was already way
in front of them. Hassan Al Zaabi scored a
245 game against Hashim Al Hashmi who
scored 242. Michael Bruenjes played an
exciting game, with over 100 spectators
waiting to see if he could get four strikes
in a row to claim the third spot in the final.
Michael rolled the first strike, second strike,
third strike and then, with all spectators
holding their breath, the fourth strike, to
claim his position in the semi-final, beating
Hassan Al Zaabi by just 4 points! Michael
was now on a winning streak and beat
Hashim easily, 214 to 188.
Then came the nail-biting final. Michael
Bruenjes played against Mohamed Al Marzouqi
who, as overall leader, had an advantage,
Michael would have to beat Mohamed twice to
be crowned Bowler of the Year.
