In half a century of travel, I have never
found a place where so many different
wonders are so close together. It never
fails to impress me the quantity of life
and biodiversity zones contained in the
relatively condensed landmass that is the
Isthmus of Central America. Since first
I journeyed here, some 20 years ago to
work for an NGO, I was struck by the vast
consciousness that we, humanity, have no
choice but to protect what we don’t know
– to preserve the delicate life balance for
future generations.
The region of Costa Rica, Nicaragua
and Panama has so much to offer us as
travelers. A morning in the Mesa Central
comes accompanied by a soundtrack
of hawkers and pigeons, little children
and their bright balloons. A visit to the
countryside fills your lungs with fresh
air and the smell of a grandmother’s
cooking. Steal two bites more and it’s time
to continue on, just minutes to the coast.
Sit with the ocean breeze in your hair,
B
contemplating the flight of seven pairs and
a single macaw overhead, and the wild
almond trees reflecting the afternoon sun –
for what reason, if not for these moments,
do we travel?
These are the momentous gifts that will
survive well beyond the trinkets and the
jewelry. Moments cannot and should not
be pre-packaged in a destination so alive
as this one. For that, we have created
a collection of 3-night hotel + flight
“paquetes” that offer travelers just enough
guidance, while leaving enough space
for serendipity to creep in. Choose your
vacation from this handpicked collection
with the peace of mind of knowing that
you are staying in top hotels with a strong
social and environmental conscience, as
noted by the CST and Rainforest Alliance
seals of excellence.

ravel to Costa Rica means traversing
more than 11 different biodiversity
zones, from tropical beaches to the cool
mountains and damp cloud forests. Nature
Vacations’ exciting new line of paquetes
offers independent travelers just the right
amount of guidance and information to
plot out your trip of a lifetime from the
jungle of options. The following hotel + flight packages
were designed to keep you in control,
while drawing on Nature Air’s insider
knowledge gained from 20 years of flying
in and out of the most remote destinations
in the region. Working together with the
Rainforest Alliance in their efforts to
support sustainable tourism, we handselected the following hotels based on
high standards of service, location and
dedication to the environment and local
society.
As the official travel provider for Nature
Air, the world’s first Carbon Neutral
airline, we transport guests safely and
quickly to some of the most remote
and ecologically diverse destinations
in the region, optimizing your time and
enjoyment. A 45-minute flight over active
volcanoes or along the tropical coastline
can turn an arduous journey into an
adventure tour.
Our reliable, in-country travel planners
are eager to guide you among their
favorite highlights of the region. You
make the final decision on where and
when to go, and we take care of getting
you from point A to point B. This unique
approach to travel gives you the utmost
independence, while pre-arranging the
important details so that all you have to
worry about is enjoying yourself.

ARENAL
There are very few places in the world where
you can view such diverse geographical and
meteorological features in such close proximity. Explore mountain top Monteverde Cloud
Forest, straddling the Contintental divide and
enshrouded in a mysterious perma-mist. In La
Fortuna, you can take a guided hike to the foot
of one of the most active geological features
on earth – the Arenal Volcano. Decide from a
wide array of adventure tours before ending
your days with a dip in natural hot springs, or
getting a massage from a world-renowned spa.
The area’s manmade lake hides at its depths a
pioneer town, as well as offering some excellent brown bass fishing. The rolling plains,
tropical flora and fauna and puffing giant make
you feel like you are in a scene from Jurassic
Park.

MANUEL ANTONIO
Manuel Antonio’s powdery white beaches
run directly into thick rain forest brimming
with wildlife. Sloths, macaws and troupes of
four species of monkeys rule the rainforest
canopy. With such intense natural beauty, it’s
no wonder why this region has become one of
the most beloved destinations in Costa Rica.
The forested ridge leading to Manuel Antonio
offers 180 degree views of beach, jungle and
the shimmering Pacific dotted with rocky islets
and secluded bays. Further south in Dominical,
the buildings become few and far between and
the lands flatten out, melting into large waves
that are a big attraction for surfers. The humidity and rain help keep this area lush and green
year round. The economy that once was ruled
by the United Fruit Company, now depends on
African palm oil and tourism.

OSA PENINSULA
Miles of protected coastline and rainforests
nestle between the sparkling waters of the
Pacific and Golfo Dulce to form the Osa
Peninsula and South Pacific – Costa Rica’s last
frontier. Come discover the wildlife that Costa
Rica is so famous for – red macaws, monkeys,
sloths, whales, dolphins, tapirs and more – in
what was dubbed by National Geographic as
the “most biologically intense place on Earth”.
The Golfo Dulce is one of only three tropical
fjords in the world, with calm waters attracting
humpback whales and ships to the deep water
port of Golfito, a former banana hub. The
harbor town of Puerto Jimenez and the remote
coastal community of Drake Bay have grown
up around eco-tourism, housing nature lodges
that serve as jump-off points for tours to the
Corcovado National Park.

NICOYA PENINSULA
The Nicoya peninsula’s southern tip is rich in
biodiversity and marine habitats that attract
migrating whales. Its mangroves, rainforest
and lagoons are home to over 200 species of
birds, howler and white-faced monkeys, and
a plethora of other tropical species. From the
tranquil shores of Tambor, head west to the
funky town of Montezuma cozied up next to
a small bay – a place where health food cafes,
souvenir shops, tour operators and bars are
all squished into its two block diameter. On
the Pacific side, the enchanting coastline and
consistent beach break of twin towns Mal Pais
and Santa Teresa have created a haven for surf
lovers, yogis and high end travelers. Uncover
rock coves, tidal pools, hidden waterfalls and
an abundance of playful critters hiding among
the treeline of this remote beach destination.
The laidback, eclectic vibe flows from day into
night, when the town comes to life with music
and dancing.

GUANACASTE
Guanacaste’s rolling plains and snaking
coastline hold witness to Costa Rica’s rich
cowboy, indigenous and rural farming
traditions that dominated Costa Rica’s past.
The coastal regions, once dotted with quaint
fishing villages, have blossomed into sun
and surf destinations focused on the tourism
trade. Beaches like Tamarindo, now a funky
cosmopolitan town with a healthy variety of
outdoor activities and nightlife attractions, call
to a new kind of pioneer – one that seeks great
surf, fun in the sun and Costa Rican hospitality.
The coastline varies from white sand to black
sand, palm fringed to rocky. From October
thru April you can see turtles nesting at Playa
Grande and Playa Ostional to the south.
Guanacaste’s provincial capital of Liberia has
grown in importance thanks to the international
airport as a gateway to spectacular beaches
and the protected eco-systems of Santa Rosa
and Rincón de la Vieja National Parks, as
well as the Guanacaste Conservation Area, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

CARIBBEAN
The Caribbean coast is infused with Calypso
culture, food and a rhythm unlike any other
place in Costa Rica. Natural estuaries, palmlined beaches, sea turtle nesting grounds,
world-class surf and thrilling whitewater
rafting are all major attractions. To the
north, quiet motorboats drift slowly through
Tortuguero’s winding canals where you’re
likely to spot caimans, sloths, monkeys and
toucans. Head south for diving with reef fish in
the turquoise waters off Cahuita National Park,
visit baby sloths at the local rescue center, or
tour a Bri Bri indigenous village just inland
from Puerto Viejo. At the end of the day, a
party is never far away after the sun sets in the
coastal town of Puerto Viejo.

BOCAS DEL TORO
Just over the border in Panama, this colorful island destination has a vibe all its own.
With wooden buildings built on stilts out
over the calm ocean, tantalizing local cuisine
infused with coconut and spices, and a
diverse, friendly population descendant from
indigenous tribes, African slaves, and foreign
expats, the archipelago is the manifestation of
Bob Marley’s hit No Worries. Boating, reef
snorkeling, sandy beaches and fun nightlife
abound. Locals and visitors alike travel leisurely between the islands in dugout canoes and
kayaks amid a truly unique biodiversity that
inspired the arrival of a Smithsonian Institute
research station.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
NatureKids Foundation
At Nature Air, we believe that
conservation is not sustainable without
education and economic benefits for
local communities. To ensure that local
populations are among the beneficiaries of
our operations, we created the NatureKids
Foundation, with the mission to provide
low-income families with the tools they
need to build more self-reliant futures.
Our school in Drake Bay teaches
English and computer courses as a way
to ensure self-empowerment and better
opportunities for employment in the
tourism-based economy. Since 2006,
NatureKids has helped to educate more
than 500 students.
FONAFIFO
In 2004, Nature Air became the first
airline to compensate for 100% of its
carbon emissions from flight operations
through the conservation of tropical
forests. The airline works with the Costa
Rican government’s Forest Financing
Fund (FONAFIFO) to calculate their
annual emissions and determine the
amount of land that must be protected to
reach Carbon Neutrality.
Nature Air has chosen to concentrate its
reforestation and conservation efforts
in the Osa Peninsula, one of the most
biologically diverse places on Earth.
By choosing to fly Nature Air, you are
helping to conserve essential biological
corridors beyond the boundaries of
the Corcovado National Park, and
contributing to the sustainable livelihood
of those working in the communities we
fly to!
Rainforest Alliance
Nature Vacations is a proud supporter
of the work of the Rainforest Alliance
assisting tourism businesses and
destinations to comply with sustainability
requirements. The Rainforest Alliance
works to guide hotels, tour operators
and other tourism companies to improve
their economic, environmental and
social practices. Through training and a
verification process, they cover topics
such as clean technologies, recycling,
carbon offsets, conservation, cultural
preservation, gender equality, service
quality and green marketing. The
Rainforest Alliance verified seal is used
by companies that have gone through
this verification process, according to
the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
Together, we are working to promote the
hotels that meet these high standards of
sustainability.
This seal notes properties that have
passed the Rainforest Alliance’s
verification process based on Global
Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
