Plankenhof, **** Pill bei Schwaz
Many people have stayed in the Plankenhof’s rooms. That is no wonder, as the landmarked gothic house
exists since 1460. The family of Enzenberg are the eleventh generation of that name to run it. Initially it used
to be a guesthouse, in which hundreds of horses for carriages and wagons were kept. At that time those
animals used to be of more worth than human beings, so they used to be held in the most beautiful part of
the house – which is used as a ballroom for up to 250 people today. The well preserved arches add a special
atmosphere to any party. The Plankenhof is convincing to its loyal regular guests due to culinary delicacies
and leisure programs which are tailored to every guest – one of them is an in-house Schnaps museum.

The princely sovereign of Tyrol, Archduke Ferdinand II (1529–1595), son of Emperor Ferdinand
I, ordered that the mediaeval fortress at Ambras be turned into a Renaissance castle as a gift
for his wife Philippine Welser. The cultured humanist from the House of Habsburg
accommodated his world-famous collections in a museum built specifically for that purpose,
making Castle Ambras Innsbruck the oldest museum in the world.
Ferdinand was one of history’s most prominent collectors of art. His armouries feature
masterpieces of the European armourer’s art from the time of Emperor Maximilian I to
Emperor Leopold I. As the only Renaissance Kunstkammer of its kind to have been preserved
at its original location, the Chamber of Art and Curiosities represents an unrivalled cultural
monument.
The Spanish Hall is one of the most beautiful halls of the Renaissance. The inner courtyard of
the Upper Castle is embellished with frescoes executed as grisaille mural paintings. In cultural
historical terms the Bathing Chamber of Philippine Welser is something of a rarity. The Chapel
is dedicated to St. Nicholas. The Strasser Collection of Glass boasts precious glassware from
the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The Habsburg Portrait Gallery laid out on three floors is open to visitors in summer. The
paintings include works by famous painters such as Hans Burgkmair, Lucas Cranach the
Younger, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Peter Paul Rubens, Diego Velázquez, and others.
