Continuing to push the boundaries of motorcycling, Maddison performed a spectacular backflip over an open Tower Bridge, soaring nearly 100 feet over the Thames. Using the famous London fixture as a takeoff and landing ramp, with an approach speed of approximately 40 mph, Maddison took off from the north side of the bridge, performed a no-handed backflip clearing the gap in the raised bridge, and landed in front of the south tower. “The whole experience was awesome,” said Maddison. “People say I’m crazy, but I just want to push the boundaries of my sport and my body to the limit, and I love taking on these huge challenges. It was an incredible feeling to fly between the two towers and over the Thames.” Already the record holder for the world’s longest-ever motorcycle jump (350.722 feet) and the highest-ever vertical “step up” at the replica Arc de Triomphe in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve 2008 (84.973 feet), Maddison can now add first man to jump Tower Bridge to his list of historic feats. ©MICHAEL REGAN/GETTY IMAGES FOR RED BULL PHOTOFILES 4 5 WING DING: 31 A BANG-UP TIME The long 4th of July weekend proved to be the perfect time to hold the 31st annual Wing Ding, as more than 9000 riders from all across the country streamed into Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Expo Square to gather for the Gold Wing Road Riders Association rally. In addition to the expected fireworks, Wing Ding 2009 offered a multitude of events spanning from bike shows to talent shows, plus lots of rides. Often his racing heritage seeps through into his Roland Sands Design (RSD) projects as he builds machines that are both beautiful and functional. Here’s the story behind Roland’s latest creation, based on a Buell XB9 and christened the Bu-Hell. 10 11 WHATʼS UP WITH THE NAME BU-HELL? DID YOU EVER THINK ABOUT GIVING UP ON cause it was just a pain in the ass to build. We SANDS: I would never give up on a bike. We wanted to give it that extra edge of detail, the way the pipes flow back and come directly underneath the tail section. Action sports? Made-for-TV reality programming? Wherever the X Games fit into your sporting world, for 15 years more and more viewers have tuned in to this four-day torrent of terrific competition held each summer in Southern California. Every year, millions of enthusiasts watch motorcycles compete in traditional forms of racing, such as Moto X (motocross) and SuperMoto, plus other fan favorites such as Best Trick, Best Whip and more. At X Games 15 there were more motorcycle events than ever, and the competition was fierce. Still, Dunlop riders won 18 of the 21 medals awarded in motorcycle competition, including the Gold medals in every event except for one, where Dunlop racers picked up the Silver and Bronze Medals. So if for some reason you found yourself locked in a closet during the four days of X Games 15, here we present a look at some of the Dunlop stars who extended our winning tradition at these unique and exhilarating games. Blake Williams styled his way to the win in the Moto X Freestyle event with a flowing routine of jaw-dropping tricks that had the crowd roaring its approval. 16 17 Teenager Ashley Fiolek was forced to sit out X Games 14 due to an injury, but that hiatus only added more drama to what was called “the feel-good story of the X Games” as the Team Dunlop graduate and current Honda Red Bull Racing Team member snatched the Gold from fellow Honda and Dunlop racer Jessica Patterson on the final lap of the Women’s Moto X Super X. Italy’s Ivan Lazzarini climbed aboard a Honda CRF450R borrowed from SMR Magazine’s Scott Hoffman to win the Moto X SuperMoto Gold over a hard-charging Mark Burkhart. The entire SuperMoto field selected Dunlops as their tires of choice. Kyle Loza flew his way to Moto X Best Trick Gold, accomplishing the first-ever three-peat in the history of that event, as Dunlop riders swept the podium. In the Men’s Moto X Super X final, two Dunlop riders mounted the podium as Justin Brayton claimed the Silver medal and veteran racer Kevin Windham snared the Bronze in his debut appearance at the X Games. 18 19 It was showtime at its finest as Todd Potter ran away with the Moto X Best Whip Gold over a couple of guys who certainly know their way around a motorcycle— James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael. In the X Games equivalent of Olympic high-jump competition, Dunlop’s Ronnie Renner flew through the air with the greatest of ease to share the Moto X Step Up Gold award with Ricky Carmichael. 20 21 JUSTINBRAYTON IVANTEDESCO 22 DAVIMILLSAPS RACING TOWARD THE FINISH LINE 23 TOMMYHAHN ASHLEYFIOLEK 24 25 JUSTINBARCIA ANDREWSHORT With only a handful of rounds remaining, Dunlop riders fill the top 10 spots in the 2009 AMA Motocross and Women’s Motocross Championships. Honda Red Bull Racing’s Ashley Fiolek remains in command of the WMA points standings with two rounds remaining. At Washougal, it was fellow Honda and Dunlop rider Jessica Patterson who broke Fiolek’s winning streak–clinching the overall win. Fiolek took moto one, but Patterson came back to take the second, giving her the upper hand in the overall. Honda’s Ivan Tedesco put his Dunlop-shod CRF450R on both the Red Bud and Spring Creek Motocross podiums, finishing 4-2 at Red Bud for third overall and 5-2 at Spring Creek to take second overall. Also at Spring Creek, JASONLAWRENCE teammate Davi Millsaps returned from injury, bouncing back from a disappointing moto one to finish third and accompany Tedesco on the moto-two podium. At the following round at Washougal, Canidae Motosport Kawasaki’s Tommy Hahn put his KX450F on the podium for the second time this season, grabbing second place in the opening moto. But it was Jason Lawrence who made a welcomed return to racing, clinching third overall with strong 9-3 finishes aboard his Dunlop-shod YZ450. In the fiercely competitive 250cc class, Geico Powersports Honda pilots Justin Barcia and Brett Metcalfe each scored podium finishes at Red Bud aboard their CRF250Rs. Barcia finished third in moto one and Metcalfe third in moto two, while KTM pilot Tommy Searle finished higher in points with 5-2 finishes to take third overall. At Spring Creek, Barcia took it to the next level, finishing third in both motos. Teammate Blake Wharton did the same at Washougal, finishing both motos in third. Canidae Motosport Kawasaki’s Kyle Cunningham raced his Dunlop-shod KX250F to his first race podium this season, grabbing second in moto two. In 2009, at the first three amateur national meets of the season— Lake Whitney Spring Nationals, GNC Finals at Oak Hill and NMA World Finals—Cianciarulo secured a combined total of three national titles, two second-place wins and four third-place finishes. With several amateur national events looming on the horizon—including his favorite round, the Ponca City Grand National—his 2009 title tally is sure to climb higher. Remarkably, he won not just one, but both Superbike main events on the Sports Car Course after earning the pole for both races. Those victories, combined with his win at Infineon Raceway in May, make Hayes the winningest Yamaha Superbike rider in years.
