First-time Partnership
for Dream Home Lottery 2009
Bluewater Health Foundation and Breast Cancer Society of Canada
A new and inventive way
of funding has materialized
and for the first time ever,
the Breast Cancer Society of
Canada (BCSC) is partnering with Bluewater Health
Foundation in support of
the Foundation’s biggest
fundraiser, Dream Home
Lottery, 2009.
The Breast Cancer Society has generously committed to match dollar-for-dollar all profit raised in this
year’s Dream Home Lottery. In other words, the
value of every $100 ticket
sold after expenses are
paid will actually be $200.
The Foundation has a goal
to raise $275,000 which
means a matching gift from
the Breast Cancer Society
of Canada of $275,000 for
a total of funds raised of
$550,000.
“This is a tremendous
gift”, stated Jack Pasternak,
President, of Bluewater
Health Foundation. “On
behalf of the patients and
staff of Bluewater Health
and the Foundation I thank
BCSC for this important
gift and the unique way in
which you have chosen to
give it. It is our duty to invest in health care for the
next generation and the
Breast Cancer society of
Canada is living that mission”.

Foundation. “It helps us to
provide our hospital with
state-of-the–art diagnostic
equipment and it gives us
$250,000 for mammography equipment and the
breast assessment unit.

leverage to maximize the
profit from our 2009 lottery.”
Each year the money
raised from the Dream
Home Lottery is used to
purchase prioritized diagnostic or medical equipment for departments in
the hospital. The funding
this year will be used in the
Diagnostic Imaging Department, specifically to help in
the purchase of two Digital
Mammography Stations.
“As a national organi-
zation across Canada, our
goal is to help in the fight
against breast cancer in
any way that we can, and
we are pleased locally to
partner with the Bluewater Health Foundation in
their Dream Home Lottery. With our matching the proceeds dollar-for-dollar, it is
our hope that all the tickets
will be sold. The society has
been pushing for a number
of years to have breast assessment units in hospitals
to provide women with a
well-defined process from
start to finish, from the
first suspicion of a problem
through to treatment. The
new Digital Mammography
Equipment will aid greatly
in these endeavors”, stated
Paddy Roach, President,
Breast Cancer Society of
Canada and Board Chair.

This gift will complement past gifts from BCSC
to the hospital foundation.
Previous to the announcement of this gift, they gave
It’s another first this year,
the winner of the grand
prize in the 2009 Dream
Home Lottery will have the
option of $300,000 cash or
the dream home. The Bluewater Health Foundation’s
volunteer lottery committee is offering the cash as a
third option; you can move
in, sell the home or take the
cash! All winnings, regardless of which option you
choose, are income tax free.
Dream Home 2009 is currently under construction
in Heritage Park Estates, a
subdivision located at the
corner of Modeland and
Confederation. It will have
an approximate value of
$375,000.
The Early Bird Draw is
January 28, 2009, when
300 prizes of a $100 lottery
ticket are awarded. The final draw date is February
28, 2009, where the dream
home winning ticket is
chosen and 173 cash prizes
are given out. Tickets at
$100 each are available at
all hospital sites, area banks
and credit unions as well
as other businesses around
town. Open houses run
from November 29, 2008,
to February 22, 2009, every
Saturday and Sunday from
1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Digital Mammography Equipment…what’s it all about?
In late September, Bluewater Health’s Diagnostic
Imaging Department will
welcome new digital equipment. We are very excited
to be able to offer this state
of the art technology to the
women of Sarnia-Lambton. Installation at the Mitton
Site is planned for late September and the other good
news is that these units will
be relocated with the department in the new hospital. “We are extremely
pleased with the community support for this project and are thrilled that the
Breast Cancer Society has
come forward to partner
with us,” said Marilyn Williams, Director of Medical
Imaging.
This advanced equipment offers many new features and benefits:
• Patients will receive approximately half the
dose of radiation to their
breasts
• More options will be
available to visualize
dense breast tissue found
in some women
• An average mammogram
takes approximately 15
minutes and with the new
digital units, the time will
reduce to around 7 minutes.
• A film digitizer will
change the patient’s previous film mammogram
into digital format for
easier comparison to the
current digital images
• Quick retrieval and no
need for film storage
space or a film processor
• The images will be accessible to all physicians on
the computer archiving
system
An additional tool is
the computer-aided detection (CAD), which provides a second look at the
mammogram, which may
direct the Radiologist to
re-evaluate a region of the
breast. Data can easily be
enhanced, magnified, or
brightness and contrast can
be changed, similar to that
done with a digital camera,
resulting in fewer callbacks
for repeat testing. Earlier
detection of cancers will be
possible. One staff member
commented that it was like
changing from black and
white television to high
definition!

mies, however, did endure
two lumpectomies and
many radiation treatments
and drug therapies. “I cannot stress enough the importance of women checking their breasts regularly
themselves and also getting regular mammograms
(Adelle found the first lump
herself). I believe that all
women deserve access to
the best equipment and
treatments available. For
a woman, like myself, who
has dense breast tissue, the
new units will aid greatly in
early detection. Also, it will
be nice to eliminate the old
film system and have everything computerized.”
When the word ‘survivor’ is mentioned, she says,
“Actually, I prefer the word
‘fighter’ rather than survivor, as the battle continues
not only for me personally,
but for women worldwide.
It becomes a part of you. I
see my role as continuing
the battle, by learning more
and as a spokesperson, educating and helping others”.
Adelle explains, “I have
been getting yearly mammograms since the age of
25 due to a family history
of cancer and will continue
to do so. The new Digital
Mammography at Bluewater Health is another line of
defense.”

in the unit adds, ”I think
the look and feel of the new
units will make an uncomfortable experience more
pleasant for women. The
benefit to our patients is a
big plus and our mammography technologists are eager to learn and use the latest technology. The digital
machines are very impressive.”

works as a cohesive group,
offering compassion and
understanding with each
patient coming for their
exam, and the team effort
is easily recognizable.

We have seen the shell
of our new hospital building grow over the summer
months as much of the
foundation and structural
concrete has been poured
and steel erection continues
– we’re progressing towards
completion in 2011!
“I am pleased to hear
from many people how impressed they are with the
development of the project
to date,” said Tracy Gazarek, Project Manager, Facilities Planning and Development. “In speaking with
our construction team, a
relatively pleasant summer
has helped us stay on-time
in all areas of construction.”
With the project now
25% complete and 150
workers on-site daily, interior renovations are also
progressing well and visible
signs of progress are everywhere. Work is ongoing in
the morgue, 3rd Floor inpatient unit, kitchen, and information technology and
services areas.
Georgina Rogers, a patient on the Continuing
Care Unit and who looks
over the construction every day from the 4th Floor
Lounge, says that she’s
proud to be a part of such
an important piece of Sarnia-Lambton’s history.
“I’m amazed by how fast
it’s progressing,” she said.
“It’s fascinating to see every
one at work. I think back
to when it was a parking
lot, and now it’s going to
be a hospital. Many other
patients watch the construction and we feel connected to what’s being built
there.”

All Bluewater Health employees now have access to

produced by one of the
world’s leaders in nursing
information. The hospital
recently acquired Mosby
Nursing Skills from Elsevier.
The state of the art reference system will help nurses refresh their knowledge
or learn entirely new skills
and procedures. It also includes supplementary material such as patient handouts.

for granted

to us. As the general population average age grows
older, the frequency of visits and the expense of use
increases and puts increasing financial pressure on
federal, provincial, municipal governments and the
community at large. Being

the medical equipment and
infrastructure which will
enhance and improve the
hospital services for the
individual when they are

in a number of community
organizations one of which
was the District Health
Council in the 90’s. I enjoyed this committee and I
felt I would like to be further

to the Board and look forward to helping improve
hospital care in this area.

The strategic planning
process is an important
exercise that becomes the
roadmap for our future
– think of it as an analysis
of where we’ve come from,
and the process to decide
where we want to go and
how to get there. This work
will guide operational planning and decision-making
for the next three to five
years.
While consultants are assisting us in this process,
much of the work is being
done internally, which is
critical to our plan’s success. The four-phased approach has involved extensive stakeholder and
community consultation
– including participation
from the Board of Direc-
tors, staff, doctors and our
community partners.
The feedback we received
from our community and
staff has been refreshing
and insightful – your opinion matters and we thank
you for sharing it with us.
Your willingness to be involved makes a difference
in moving our organization forward to a brighter

The Charles Kennedy
Charitable Foundation was
established in 1981 as a
means for Ethel & Charles
Kennedy to give back to the
community. Charles, the
founder, wanted to provide
a legacy that would help to
fund scholarships, and hospitals located in Lambton
County. “He did not live
long enough to appreciate
the impact his forethought
had on our community,”
says Doug Kennedy. The
Charles Kennedy Charitable Foundation has been
supporting the local hospital for more than a quarter of a century. Bob Sokol,

year the Foundation Board
contributes a percentage

medical and highly specialized equipment for our new
hospital. “It’s a pleasure
for me to be a part of the
Charles Kennedy Charitable Foundation,” said Lacey
Drew. Lacey is currently the
branch manager of HSBC
Finance Canada, as well as,
volunteering her time for
the Charles Kennedy Charitable Foundation.

Recently,
Bluewater
Health Children’s Auxiliary
presented the Maternal/Infant/Child Program with a
photo collage. It consists of
many pictures of donations
made during 2007. The
collage highlights all the
hard work and contribution the Children’s Auxiliary does to make the young
patients’ stay in the hospital as pleasant as possible
and purchase equipment
needed for the department.

Golf Fore Health Raises Money for Equipment

140 golfers took to the
greens during the annual
Bluewater Health Foundation-Golf Fore Health Tournament.
“Our generous
sponsors have enabled us
to host another successful
tournament to raise funds
for equipment in our new
community hospital,” says
Johanne Tomkins, Special
Events Coordinator. Special
thanks to Lambton Financial Credit Union Limited
for this year’s title sponsorship. The event netted
nearly $26,000, which will
be used to purchase critical care beds for 4E Critical
Care Unit. “The hospital
has many needs and we are
lucky to have such a supportive community who
recognizes these needs and
continues to give year after
year,” says Sheila Chappell,
Co-Chair, Special Events

Terri’s
motivation
comes from losing friends
to breast cancer. Seeing
the courage that they and
their children had has inspired Terri to help. “No
woman no matter how
old or how young should
know the pain of losing
their mom to breast cancer. That’s my reason for
getting involved,” says
