5 6 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Intro to scrap booking: Ideas for Getting Started On Your First Project Scrap books ——- What are they? Most of us at some point of our lives have indulged in the pastime of making a scrapbook of anything that fancied us at that stage of our life. The passion with which the scrapbook was put together can not be put in words, at the same time the heartbreak that was experienced when the scrapbook came apart after a few years was catastrophic. Lovers of scrapbooks will be overjoyed to hear that making a scrapbook is no longer a cumbersome task where you had to work with loose sheet of paper which had a mind of their own, the glue which spread more than it stuck. All this has been replaced with Scrap booking albums, which could be either placed in three ring binders or bound. You need not use the messy glue, instead you can use specialized glue-dots or double-sided sticking tapes which make work a pleasure and enjoyable. These are so effective that you can even stick feathers, metal gems and beautiful ribbons. Scrap booking is a great gift idea; it can be used as an educational tool and is an amazing way to immortalize your memories The Christensen family officially launched it in the year 1980 in Utah. Today it is a booming business called Keeping Memories Alive and still growing at an amazing pace. Scrap booking has flourished into a Billion Dollar business with a number of new people entering the market with their own companies. 6 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 7 History of Scrapbooking We can trace the origin of Scrapbooking to ancient Greece where a form of notebook called the hypomnemata was used for recording what one heard, saw, or thought that was important to remember. Apart from Greece there is no proof or evidence of this practice existing anywhere else in the world. When the paper came into existence, more and more people started recording happenings. With the invention of printing, people have shifted from writing in their own hands or writing through their family and friends to the more commercially available printed material. Some of the well known American Scrapbookers are Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain. When photography became common, people started using them in their scrapbooks. Old Scrapbooks had these photographs mounted on photomounts with corners. These scrapbooks included newspaper clippings, letters, etc whereas with advancement of technology, modern scrapbooking has evolved into attractive display of text, journaling and memorabilia. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 7 8 T D S B Q C P P L J OH How Do I Start Scrapbooking? The most basic thing that you will need before you commence with assembling your scrapbook will be the album; there is any number of these available in the market today. You can select one that will be most appropriate for your theme. Other than this you will need a good pair of scissors, glue, pictures, photographs, clippings from the newspaper, and any assorted decorative bits and pieces which will enhance the beauty of the scrapbook. There are many other things which are indispensable to a scrapbook maker. An exact knife is a must have for anyone making a scrapbook, since everything can be cut into any shape. It is devised in such a way that when the tip gets blunt, it is broken off and a new sharp tip is exposed. Care has to be taken while using this knife, you should always cut the desired picture after placing it on a mat or newspaper, or else you will end up cutting things which you had no intentions to cut!!! There are a variety of glues such as glue dots, Xyron and two-sided tapes available in the market, do a proper survey and pick up what suits you most. Tweezers though unconventional are very practical to pick up tiny gummy bits and move them around without creating a mess. It is worth taking the trouble to look for albums which have acid free, lignin free pages; they enhance the life of the scrapbook. They prevent the paper from turning yellow and disintegrating. 8 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 9 Getting started At the onset you must have the theme for the scrapbook you want to make. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you want to. Scrapbooks can be given as gifts for baby-showers, wedding anniversaries, weddings or birthdays. They could be made to immortalize special moments from the lives of your favorite actor, sportsperson, grandparent or child. Small details that are special to these people can be a part of this book, which will eventually be symbolic to them. These little details can be decorated with trimmings, dried flowers, by fingerprints or anything, which is special to the theme. Once you have settled on your theme you have to think of what you are going to name the scrap book and then name the individual pages .It should have an identity of its own so that the viewer knows what he is going to view. This name could be the person’s name, date or some special event. It could be slogan like, dressy or simple quotes, the choice is entirely yours. A lot of attention will have to be paid to the colour scheme of the scrap book. You can work on a single color scheme if the book is a personalized gift idea and you are sure of the color preference. It could be a mix n match concept provided you are confident of the outcome. You have to pay a lot of attention to the color scheme as this could highlight the beauty of the scrapbook or make it look gaudy and distracting. You could visit your neighborhood paint and hard ware shop and refer to the color wheel. Getting Children started on Scrapbooking Scrapbooking is an interesting hobby for both children and adults. All children with no exceptions love to play around with paper, colours, pictures, etc. It is very easy to make a child interested in scrapbooking only because it is plenty of fun. It is a mistaken notion that girls enjoy making scrapbooks more than boys. Boys are creative too and enjoy creating especially with their friends in a group. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 9 10 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Adults can really motivate their children to start on a scrapbooking project by talking about if first and getting them interested. Children then eagerly start planning and collecting materials required like photos, school papers and awards, etc. The first step is to help the child decide on the theme. It is a good idea to let the child select his own theme so he will be more excited and motivated about the project. Some of the good themes are sports, school, friends, family, etc. Children can also be asked to create a scrapbook on a birthday party they enjoyed, a good vacation they really enjoyed, a day they visited the zoo or their favourite park, etc. Without unduly interfering or giving them suggestions, allow the children to choose the things they want to go into the scrapbook. When you go to the shop to get them the supplies, make sure you take them along and choose supplies like tags, trims, background paper, colours, etc. Gently suggest things that you think will be interesting for the child like borders, ribbons, animal cut outs, additives which are fun, pieces of foam, etc. By matching trims and accessories with pictures you can explain to them and help them choose the right product. There are two types of scrapbooking. One is a short term project which will be completed in a day or two. The other is an ongoing one which encourages the child to take it as a hobby and teaches him to be patient. It is better to go in for short term projects if the child is very young and the long term hobby if he or she is a little older. It is a long and tedious process to accumulate items needed for the scrapbook. Make everything very interesting and interactive. While choosing photographs make them laugh by telling them incidents associated with it to make it livelier. Give a freehand to the child to arrange and organize the photographs in whichever way he or she wants. Do not try to correct them and force your ideas on them. 10 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 11 Make sure you give them a lot of stickers as they love to play around with them. Design scissors which make a design when when we cut is an all time favourite with kids. If they are very young, you can help them cut. Glue sticks are ideal for children rather than the messy adhesives. Give them a paper punch to punch paper and foil. If you give them an ink pad and some stamps they will be delighted. They will have tremendous fun stamping images on their album. If the children are of an age where they can write and draw let them make their own tags. Even if it isn’t perfect the child will enjoy making as much of the scrapbook as possible by himself. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 11 12 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Using Photographs… A scrapbook can never be conceptualized without photographs. A photograph be the first thing that will catch the attention of even the most biased on looker. It is a good idea to scan the photograph and then take a print out on paper that is lignin free and acid free paper. This way you will not damage the original photograph. A photograph can convey the most eloquent ideas. They are very powerful mediums of expressions and add a lot of life into a scrapbook. Choose them with a lot of care and ensure that they follow the theme of the scrapbook. You can even use digital photographs, which are printed on paper that is lignin free and acid free. Now that you have selected your photographs, make sure that they are not oversized or miniscule in size. They have to be cut carefully to augment the beauty and aesthetic sense of your scrapbook. You can use an exact knife or scissors to cut the pictures, just remember to outline the desired picture with a chalk before you cut. Take the trouble to be doubly sure with the measurements before you cut as you can never undo what is done once in this case!! In today’s scenario with so much of computer assistance you can use the help of the Photo Editor to brighten, darken or contrast the background effect of the photograph to bring out it’s beauty. You can even change the setting of the photograph if you want. The placements of theses photographs are entirely at your discretion. The placements can be in a chronological order, based on a color scheme, some specific occasions, or just casually. If you are making a scrapbook to give as a birthday gift it would make sense to stick photographs of the concerned person right from birth, through the growing years. The foot- prints and hand prints would make the whole scrapbook extremely special. 12 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 13 You could write out some captions under the photographs to make it more personal and interesting. Some special anecdotes can be handwritten or printed on the computer using fancy fonts and color contrast schemes to beautify the scrapbook. Cropping and matting photos Cropping Removing unwanted background from the photographs is called cropping. Cropping ranges from rounding off corners to cutting shapes from the photograph. You must not remove any important background from the photograph you are going to crop. Select the shape you want to cut with care keeping all the important details in mind. Make sure you leave items which you think will be of historical importance for your family like photos of cars, houses, furniture, etc. You can also use a template to assist you in cropping photographs. This makes it look neat and even. Some of the templates available are squares, round, rectangles, triangles, circles, etc. You can trace the template on the photograph lightly with a pencil and cut it along the line. If you don’t want to cut the photograph you can keep to its original shape and only trim the edges to make it look straight and neat. Matting Matting is placing a photograph on a card stock and cutting a margin along its sides. This gives an effect of framing for the photograph. You can use various colour combinations to make it look very attractive. The colour of the background you choose should match with the colour scheme in the photograph. This ensures the colour scheme compliments and enhances the photograph. Cutting of the mat can be done using either a straight edged or a patterned edged scissors. Using a colour similar to the subject’s clothing for a mat works well. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 13 14 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Tags and Trimmings To make your scrapbook still more attractive and special you can make use of tags. These can be made from different material like fabric, pieces of furnishings, or anything that catches your fancy. If you are not too creative, you can pick them up from shops. Tags are very useful for highlighting some special incidents from ones life and can be in any shape, color or texture. Tags allow you to be as creative as you can get. You can use any kind of trimmings to personalize your scrapbook. It could be the centre piece of a page, could be used as the border or just to emphasize on something interesting or some special moments captured. You can use your own creativity and imagination to make these trimmings. They could simple ribbons to exquisite pieces of decorative items, which can be made by using odd things or small little nothings picked up at garage sales. Trimmings can also be left over’s from other projects, you just have to use anything that catches your eye and fits into the theme. Again there is no hard and fast rule of what you can use and what you can’t. It’s entirely your wish on how you want the end result to look. 14 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 15 Accessories While you are looking at the accessories make sure to pick up a marker to write in the scrapbook and to highlight letterings, and borders. There are a variety of markers available in the market make sure to pick up the ones that will not smudge on the scrapbook pages. These are available in reputed stationary shops and are available in a variety of colors. They are acid free and do not fade over a period of time. Making a scrapbook will not be possible without the wax pencil. These are specially made to enable you write on glass, photographs and plastic. You can also use this for coloring, making borders or for highlighting something on the pages. The ink used in these pencils is acid free and comes in many colors. While making scrapbooks for children stickers can be used extensively. Stickers specially ones involving favorite cartoon figures immediately endear the book to the child and add a personal touch. They can be used to hide mistakes add a little humor and can be used as trimmings. Before using stickers, you must take care to see that the stickers are lignin free and acid free and the glue is not dried. One more exciting trimming that can be used is a rubber stamp which when dipped in acid free ink can be used to make various trimmings. You can make charming designs on scrapbooks for children in attractive colors. Souvenir can be decorated with different rubber stamps If the scrapbook is not a formal one you could casually tear up paper and stick it in different shapes and give your page a very informal TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 15 16 T D S B Q C P P L J OH trimming effect. These could also be used as borders and backgrounds. Great care should be taken to see that this is not used with any other theme other then casual ones. You will have to decide whether you want to follow a planned layout or create one randomly. It could be a particular shape depending on the end motive, e.g. If it’s a wedding gift, it could be in the shape of a wedding cake. You could spread out the entire matter per page or else lay it out in the centre of the page and decorate the borders or corners as per your desire. Please remember the lay out should correlate with the theme of the scrapbook. Now that you have decided on the layout of the scrapbook you have to think about how you are going to space the both the written and printed matter in the book. If you are not careful and conscientious about this it could look too garish and unattractive. While you space out the material care should be taken that the trimmings are not so prominent that they distract from main theme of the project. If the page seems too crowded, you can always reduce the trimmings, and if it seems too bare, more trimmings can be added. The layout has been planned, spacing has been finalized it is time to sticking the various photographs and trimmings to place. Care should be taken that this part of the job is done with great care, one wrong move it sure will be an irreversible disaster. Using glue to stick pictures could be dangerous, as it tends to run all over the place, it is safer to use glue dots, glue pens two-sided tapes. There is a chance that even though you take immense care something may spill and cause some stains. Here are some tips to prevent major problems. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 21 22 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Soft white erasers can be used to wipe off some glue stains, errors from the scrapbook page. If the mark is prominent, you could decorate it or camouflage it with some sticker or trimmings. In case you notice some fingerprint stains on photographs, these can be wiped off with a piece of flannel. After having put in so much of an effort to make the scrapbook, you sure would like to protect it. The best way would be to use paper, which is lignin free and acid free since this prevents paper from turning yellow and crumbling. Page protectors can also be used to protect pages. Technology has developed to such an extent that making copies of the different pages of the scrapbook is no big deal. If you are making a scrapbook on recipes you can scan and copy any recipe any number of times. You just have to add trimmings to theses copies after you have the print outs either on vellum or paper. It is difficult to visualize making a scrapbook without any newspaper clippings. It gives the scrapbook a personal touch if you see a clipping of birth announcement from a newspaper or any private details or achievement details of your hero are preserved in the scrapbook. You need not worry about the longitivity of the paper as it contains about 4% lignin so this will delay the commencement of the yellowness and brittleness setting in considerably. To make sure that the quality of the paper is maintained you could even use Mylar paper and pages protectors to protect the paper from external factors which could damage the paper. Internet is a great boon to scrapbook makers. You can get any kind of graphic or clip artwork done easily. The printing also costs nothing. Through the internet, you can download any details that you need for your scrapbook. Not only can you download printed material but also photographs. You cannot imagine the joy you will give your child, when he sees his favorite actor or sportsperson photograph in the scrapbook. Care must be taken to print these on lignin-free and acid-free paper. Half the times we do not take care of the art things the children do in their school. If these are photographed and saved, they could be used in the scrapbooks being made for the children or grandparents. They could also be used the background or as the main theme for one page in the scrapbook. 22 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 23 Beautifying the Scrapbook We can beautify the scrapbooks by using various techniques like inter weaving two copies of the same photographs. This looks very creative and distinctly artistic, especially if it is to be gifted to one who is very creative by nature. Scrapbooks can also be made as collection of photographs or cuttings from the newspapers. They can be presented as a collage of a single person, an event or occasion. You can present the various activities in life of the concerned person in the format of a collage. This breaks the monotony of the scrapbook pages and the scrapbook grabs the attention of the viewer. Collages make the scrapbook look very stylish. While making the collage you must remember that the fixing has to be done temporarily till you are satisfied with the end product. Once it is ready you can start the final sticking. Photograph Mosaic is a very distinct way of inserting photographs in the scrapbook. The photos are cut into evenly shaped squares and then glued onto the page with equal spacing between the pieces. This gives the picture a widened effect, which in turn looks very stylish. This can be glued either on to a contrast background or on to same colored background. A page with an antique finish look makes the page look amazingly striking and adds a lot of character and maturity to the scrapbook. The easiest way to get this effect is to rub sand paper on the page and leave it a little roughened. You can rub chalk on the edge of the pages and give it a colored effect. You could work on a contrast color scheme or same color scheme to beautify the page. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 23 24 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Covering the Scrapbook… You can use your creative genius to produce wonderful covers for your scrapbook. One type you can use are the fabric jackets. To make a fabric jacket, mark the measurements on the wrong side of the fabric and cut it out. Then you can sew half an inch hem on the two sides and after folding another one quarter inch on both sides you can sew this to the fold. Flaps can be made by holding the cover on to the book and folding back the fabric on each side of the cover right sides together. After sewing these flaps along the top and bottom on each side of the cover, you must turn right side out and iron it out before putting it on to the scrap book. Plastic covers are easily created than the fabric ones. The dimensions should be one and a half inch more on all sides. Since you need not hem plastic cover, they just have to be sewed on to wrap around the scrap book. There is another way to protect your scrapbook which is to keep it safe by following carefully some preservation techniques. Some simple techniques which can be followed are – Store the scrapbook in a standing position and do not keep anything on top of it. Store the scrapbook away from sharp objects in a safe environment. When not in use make sure scrapbooks are not lying all over the house. They are then prone to accidents and may get spoilt. Lastly, cover them with a fabric or plastic cover to ensure a lifetime’s worth of memories is kept safe and protected. 24 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 25 Scrapbooking as an addiction If you want to analyze why people get addicted to the pastime of scrapbooking, you have to just start doing it yourself. That is the only way you will realize how this hobby can be a stress buster and make your life so much more enjoyable. When you return home tired from work, the best thing you can do is to spend some time scrapbooking. This will make you smile immediately and unleash your creative abilities which you may not even know existed. The best thing about this hobby is it can be pursued in your spare time with no tension of time limit in contrast to your work in office. You can also form a group and work on scrapbooking to make it even more enjoyable. Scrapbooking therefore is a welcome obsession. For once, it makes sense for everyone in the family to get addicted. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 25 26 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Over the Years….. Scrapbooking is not a new concept. It has been in existence for many years now. People have made up scrapbooks using things that they consider special. For example, teenage girls have stuck prom tickets to notebooks, and written about their memorable prom experiences along with pictures, mementos, and other souvenirs. The concept of scrapbooking first began in 1980 by the Christiansen family in Utah, who went on to start ‘Keeping Memories Alive’, a very successful company in the scrapbook industry. This industry has been around for about twenty-five years and has flourished a great deal in the last four years, and continues to keep growing steadily. Scrapbooking has undergone many changes in the last few years. Scrapbooks are not merely just books with a few pictures, prom tickets, or labels anymore. They are now sophisticatedly designed memory books with stylish accessories. Scrapbooking is also considered an art by some people and has grown into a billion dollar business. In the United States alone, the scrapbooking business has recorded business worth $2.25 billion per year. To add to these figures, many people are starting their own scrapbooking business. 26 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 27 Layout ideas and themes…. Before you go in for planning your page layout, you will have to see what are the things like photographs, memorabilia, etc you are planning to display. Planning on how to display these in a beautiful manner is what matters the most and is the whole point of scrapbooking. photographs available. A layout can be either a single one or a double one depending on the number of It is interesting to create a theme for your layout. Ideas for themes range from Halloween to Christmas to football and baseball. The paper used is also very important. The paper should be very attractive as it will display and show off your photographs. Taking your photos to the shop while you shop for paper is a good idea. You can keep the photograph against the paper to see if it looks good before choosing the paper. Papers can be bright and colourful with bold patterns if you want to set a cheerful mood. If you want a much sober effect you can go in for subtle colours. The next step is to frame or mat the photographs. You can give a rugged effect by ripping off the edges carefully. The next step involves journaling. Journaling is any kind of matter you want to put in on your scrap book. You can talk about an incident in your family, tell a story, write a poem, talk about the photo and about the moments when the photo was taken, etc. Journaling is a wonderful way of keeping memories alive. The last step involves choosing enhancements or embellishments for completing that look. Enhancement options include rubber stamps, stickers, die cuts, stamped images, pressed flowers, buttons, beads, mesh and a host of other interesting things. In the next step, cut out a basic shape of a house with a simple square bottom and a triangle shaped roof. Then one by one, cut out the doors, windows, window flaps and shutters, etc. The house is now ready to be decorated. Decorating involves making roof shingles, shutters, etc using a pen or layers of small squares of paper. Using your creativity, you can draw knots holes or wood grains on the outer surface walls and doors of the house. For that extra effect, you can also add a “Do Not Enter” sign outside the door. Now, after choosing your photos, arrange them inside the house after opening all the doors and windows. You can stick these photos with glue or a glue stick. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 39 40 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Advanced Scrapbooking using paper pulp One of the flexible and easy to use craft medium is the paper pulp which is thick and heavy and hardens into a solid mass. This can be used in various ways like forming into a design and sticking it on to the page, which gives the page a textured look or just spreading it out on the paper. You of course need paper to make this paper pulp paste. Before using the paper you have to make sure it is acid free by spraying the acid neutralizing spray. Using colour paper will give you coloured paper pulp. Alternately, you can also use white paper and add colorants like paint or chalk. Making paper pulp is very easy. You have to puree the paper by putting strips of it in a blender and adding cold water to it. After blending it, you will have to pour it through a fine strainer and gently press out the excess water. Use a disposable container to take out the pulp from the strainer and put it in. In case you want to colour your pulp, you will have to add chalk or paint to gel glue which is clear and acid free and mix them well. Add this blend to the pulp with a spoon till the pulp is fully coated with the glue to make clay like substance which is pasty. Of course, you can simply colour the paper pulp after it is dry. Paint it or, for a more subtle shaded effect, rub scrapbooking chalk on it with a sponge-tipped make up applicator or cotton swab. Now that you have your paper paste, you are ready to use it in a layout. Here are some ideas to get you started: Spread a thin layer of paper paste with a plastic knife over the paper. After it dries the paper will have a hand crafted look and an interesting texture. 40 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 41 Use templates or stencils to make 3-D paper paste letters, numbers or designs. Simply place the template or stencil where you want the figure to go, and fill the empty space in with paper pulp paste. Just press it in and smooth off the top. Carefully pull the stencil or template straight up so you don’t smear the figure. Let dry. The figure will look like it was plastered onto the page. Add a line of paper pulp paste around the border of the page or photograph. Spread it out with your finger or a plastic knife, making it as smooth or as rough as you want. When dry, it will look like a 3-D clay frame. Spread a layer of your paper pulp into shallow molds made for soap or chocolate making. Don’t make it too thick or it won’t dry properly; just spread enough on so that the pulp is pressed into the design and coats it. Allow it to dry. Pop the dried pulp out of the mold. Trim or paint if desired. You will have little 3-D paper embellishments to glue on the page. Use a biscuit tin or round cookie cutter to pile up a small circle of paper pulp paste on wax paper, approximately 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch thick. Or, if you prefer a rough-edged, aged look, simply make a freehand circle by piling it up lightly on wax paper with a plastic spoon or craft knife. Press a rubber stamp into the centre of it. Allow it to dry. Pop it off the wax paper. For a great look, gently rub some paint or chalk over the top of it with your finger. The colour will bypass the impression, leaving it much more pronounced. Glue these seals onto your layout. Paper pulp gives your product such a unique look that you will tend to use it again and again. It is very thrilling to create crafts and scrapbooks using paper pulp. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 41 42 T D S B Q C P P L J OH Techniques to create a professional looking scrapbook Various techniques like hand photo coloring, stencil plastering, sewing your pages, embossed vellum layer, digital scrapbooking, etc helps you create a very attractive and professional looking scrapbook. Hand photo coloring: Spice up your photos by getting them printed in black and white, then colour them yourself. There are a number of photo colouring chalks, markers and paints on the market that you can fill in the colour right on the photo yourself for a look that is more reminiscent of portrait paintings. Chalks will give a very subtle colouring, and paints will give bolder colours. You can colour the entire photo, or you can only fill in a few elements and make them stand out against the shades of gray. Chalks can be rubbed on with a cotton swab, as can paints if you want a more toned-down look and for the colours to blend. Use a pencil eraser before the paint dries to remove any mistakes or splatters. Stencil plastering: To give your pages depth and dimension, get wall plaster or spackle and some plastic or metal stencils. The stencils can be of lettering, or 42 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 43 pictures. You can plaster directly onto the page, or you can do it on small squares or scraps of paper, and then place them on the page. In order to do this, simply clip your stencil to the paper with a paper clip to make sure it won’t move, or use a temporary adhesive. Stir your plaster or spackle until it is of a smooth consistency, then, with a small spackle or painters knife, fill in the stencil with a thin layer. Scrape across the top of the stencil with the long edge of the knife to smooth it, or leave it bumpy for extra texture. Carefully pull the stencil off by lifting it straight up. Try not to let it smear the image. Allow the plaster to dry. You can use a coloured plaster, or a white plaster. If you like you can add colour to white plaster after it is dry by brushing some coloured chalk on it, or painting it. Sewing you pages: For an interesting look, throw out your glue and sew your elements on your page. You can sew on cardstock and heavy paper the same way you sew on fabric. Choose threads in coordinating colours. Use your sewing machine and make either a straight stitch, or fancy zigzags. This is a particularly great method for putting together a paper “quilt” layout. Embossed Vellum layover: Vellum embosses beautifully, and, because it is transparent, when you lay it over a page it makes a great effect. You can even emboss vellum without using any type of heat or light tables. In fact, if you don’t have a stylus, all you need is a paper clip. It is easiest to emboss with a metal or plastic stencil. Take the stencil and lay it on the table. Remember that the image will come out backwards, so if you are embossing letters or images that need to face a certain way, turn the template upside-down. Lay the vellum paper face-down over the template. You will easily be able to get it in the right place because you can see the stencil through the vellum. When it is in place, gently rub into the paper with your stylus, or the rounded edge of your paper clip, pushing it into the stencil. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 43 44 T D S B Q C P P L J OH For sharper edges, go over them a few times, but be careful not to tear the paper. The more you rub over the vellum, the more opaque the image will become. Pick up the vellum, turn it over, and see the image you have created. Digital Scrapbooking: The new rage is going digital. Basically, with digital scrapbooking, you can scrap the scraps. No glue or scissors involved, with digital scrapbooking you create the page right on your computer with your digital or scanned photos, and print it when it is complete. While for some people who like to get their hands into their work, this can be a downfall, for others who absolutely love the look of the modern memory album, but don’t have the time, patience, or artistic drive to hand-craft it, this option is ideal. There are a number of digital scrapbook programs that can be purchased at craft stores, computer software stores, or on the internet. With literally thousands of options for colours, patterns, fonts, and embellishments, you can still create pages that are unique, but without having to dedicate an entire closet to scrapbooking supplies. Using Chalk in your Layout Chalks can create a variety of tones on your scrapbook page. You can create subtle shadings and rich colouring depending on how much you apply. You can also create various effects like fading effects by blending two colours. The soft and coloured chalks are the best ones one can use for this purpose. These are chalks which are especially available for paper crafting. You can also use chalkboard or sidewalk chalks grated into a powder. However, this is a messy job and by the time you are done with it, the chalk dust will be all over the place. 44 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 45 Artist chalks being harder than the usual are not good for this purpose. Using paper crafting chalks which are soft and easy to use is the best option available. It will be a good idea to practice doing this on a piece of waste paper before actually applying it on the scrap paper. Make sure you apply a little bit at a time as you can always make it darker if necessary but it is more difficult to lighten dark areas. Cotton swabs can be used to apply the chalk. Alternately, a sponge tipped make up applicator is also a good idea. Clean cotton swabs can be used to lighten the shades by rubbing them over it. Two colours can be blended by applying them side by side and rubbing the edges where they meet with the cotton swabs. You will have to rub back and forth in a circular motion until they blend perfectly. You can give a fading appearance by applying the chalk dark in one area and a lighter shade next to it and rub on the edges where they meet in a circular motion until the two colours blend to give a fading effect. This also has to be done with clean cotton swabs and you have to keep changing the swab as it gets coloured. Using templates or stencils will give you a sharp outline around the area where you want to use the chalk. After applying the chalk you must blow over it to remove any extra chalk particles. Make sure you do not rub this with anything as it will blur the outlines. Chalk can be also used for shadowing. Use chalk around the edges of your photos, fading it out as it moves away from the picture. Shadowing letters is another interesting thing you can do which adds depth to your scrap page. Chalk borders can be created by placing a page border template about one fourth to one inch away from the edge of the page and applying chalk to the edge exposed with a cotton swab. After applying the chalk evenly all over, blow away excess chalk dust and lift the template. TD S BQ CP P L JO H ! 45 46 T D S B Q C P P L J OH The chalk outline of the design will run along the page border. Repeat this, if desired, on the other three edges to frame the page with this border. You can make page titles with a tow tone effect using chalk. Using two colours of chalk and a letter stencil you can create beautiful effects on the page titles. Apply the colours where you want them to go. Take a clean cotton swab or sponge applicator tip and begin to blend at the line where they meet in small circular motions until the colours have faded into one another. Give a quick blow to remove excess chalk dust, remove the template and reposition for the next letter. Negative print is another thing you can do using the chalk. Using the letter die cuts, keep the letter the colour of the page and create a cloud using the chalks around the letters. This creates a very beautiful effect. You can create a lot of wonderful and fascinating chalk book ideas using a bit of chalk. Video Scrapbook Video Scrapbooking is all about catching important family moments on the video. Precious moments will be lost if you do not take the effort now. It is also fun looking at photographs or a video after a long time to relive memories. There is one disadvantage in this for the person who is videotaping the event. He tends to miss out on the fun of the event while focussing on capturing the event itself. The possibilities are endless when deciding how to place your pictures in your scrapbook and what items you should use to make decorative borders. Deciding which photos to use in your scrapbook can be a difficult task. Here are a few tips on taking pictures that make great scrapbook additions: Take candid photos of people doing everyday things such as playing a game, participating in sports, or relaxing in a favorite chair. People coming for the party must bring their own pictures, photos and memorabilia as well as the album where they want to assemble their pages. You can organize for people to bring various supplies they will need. If it is the first time you are organizing a scrapbook party, do not make it go on for more than a few hours. Just aim to complete a few pages in one session. If you push it or prolong it, it tends to get tedious and monotonous. It should be fun not a chore. You can get together more often for short durations to make it more interesting. This gives people to accumulate more photographs, supplies, die cuts, etc. If you are hosting the party, it is a good idea to have snacks on hand. Avoid liquids and messy snacks. If spilt by mistake it will ruin anyone’s hard effort. You can also motivate people with some competitions and prizes. One idea is to award the scrapper who completes the most number of pages with small scrapbooking supplies. Keepsake Scrapbooks specially designed… A scrapbook which is specially designed with the use of fabric is very attractive and stunning which your friends will love. You can safety treasure and guard your memories in this beautiful piece of keepsake. All you have to do is to take a photo album. If you do not have one, buy one from any of the departmental stores. You do not have to spend much on the album as the fabric is anyway going to cover it on the top. The album can be in the size of your choice. Usually if it is for a wedding, we can use a satin fabric. The fabric should cover the outer part of the album as well as the inside covers of the binder. You should keep extra satin for a small oval shape in the centre. The next step is to measure the outside of the album for determining the amount of lace that is needed. After placing the fabric smooth on a flat surface and the album flat on it carefully glue on the fabric to the album and secure it. The next step is to glue on the lace all around the edges of the album. Cut an oval shape from the leftover satin and glue it on to the centre of the album using the glue. You can place a white satin ribbon tied into a bow at the top of the oval shape and your keepsake album is now ready to use. It can be quite educational too. Since scrapbook making is quite expensive, parents tend to be around the children making sure they do not waste anything and consequently spoil the fun for them. We can avoid this by giving them ideas to make scrapbooks using inexpensive materials. All you need is a box of resealable bags preferably with nothing printed on them apart from the regular materials like cardboard, glue, scissors, hole punch, photos, mementos, etc. The procedure involves - Piling five bags with the opening at the top. Staple the bags on the left side of the pile together. Cover the cardboard sheets with construction paper. Punch holes of about three fourths of an inch with a hole punch on one side of the cardboard sheets. Keep the unpunched sheet under the punched sheet and makr where the holes are. Punch matching holes then in the second sheet. Now, this is the scrapbook cover. You must now place the stapled stacks of bags inside the cover. Drive nails through the bags using punched holes in the cardboard cover as a guide and make matching punch holes. Repeat again with second stack of bags. After aligning all the bags with the covers, sew through the cover and bags with a yarn needle. You can whipstitch from bottom to top and then again to the bottom. You can make a yarn bow at the binding. 58 TD S BQ CP P L JO H T D S B QC P P L J O H ! 59 Using rulers and scissors, measure one inch from the left edge of the top cover and score along this line to make the scrap book open and close easily. You can keep photos, mementos, etc inside these plastic bags and write journals and memories under the photographs. The outside of the scrap book can also be decorated attractively with markers and colours.
