A LOOK AT NOSE ART
A LOOK AT NOSE ART
In early January 2015, some very unique scans of a scrapbook came to light. The
man who had made his scrapbook was 6th Bomb Group armorer,
PFC Kenneth Spitko
Mr. Spitko , seen on right in above photo, was a professional sign-painter
and amateur artist, and most likely produced this art in trade for
something, which was quite common.
The original sketch work is below:
(note name at far left—M/Sgt Szarko)
Then the art was painted on the other side of the board, in full color:
When applied to the B-29 of 99TH Sqdn ,
serial number 42-24876, 52V,
it looked like this:
She completed 39 missions, with 14 different crews. Carl Donica racked
up the most with 11.
Crew Chief M/Sgt Maurice Szarko and his men made this the 1st plane in
the 9TH BG to achieve 400 hours on all 4 engines !
M/Sgt Szarko and 3 of his crew are seen standing in photo below.
(Matt Danner, grandson of Mr Spitko, provided the drawings of the art
and photo of his grandfather)
