A message from
Principal Taylor
Gold colored leaves on the trees and fallen leaves on the
ground are annual physical reminders to us that our school
year is in full swing. Given that October is here, we are
certainly hoping that students are hearing and internalizing the
‘pursuit of personal excellence’ messaging. In order to
succeed academically, it is very important that students develop
sound, regular study routines. Below are a few suggestions
that have proven to be successful.
Students should set aside a designated minimum amount of
time each day for ‘home study’, regardless of whether or not
specific homework tasks are due the next day. If this strategy is
effectively implemented, you should never again have to hear
“I don’t need to do anything, I have no homework”.
The amount of time required will vary from grade to grade and
even student to student but the important thing is that students
are making time for regular review. This home study time
could be used to complete any or all of the following:
• Specific tasks that are due the next day.
• Organise notes and binders.
• Review and highlight the notes from classes that day.
• Prepare a list of questions to ask teachers or peers.
• Read ahead in preparation for the lesson the next day.
• Prepare ‘key point’ study notes and/or cue cards.
• Prepare a schedule for studying for upcoming tests and working on projects. Stick to the schedule.
Having this list of tasks posted in the designated ‘home study’
area (that minimizes distractions) is a great way to keep
students focused on the task at hand.

TERRY FOX RUN 2012
This was the 5 Year Anniversary of the Edge School 5km Terry Fox
Run, and it was by far our BEST!
Students ran their hearts out on the course, and there were more
participants this year than ever before. The message to
students was- “try and keep going for all those who aren’t able to”. It
was taken to heart and there were a lot of tired and sweaty
students passing through the finish area. Thank goodness for those
Parent Ambassadors putting on another great BBQ to re-fuel after
that the 5km - Thank you parent volunteers!!
Congratulations to the Overall Male and Female winners of this
year’s event - Everett Orgnero and Steph Mattson - 2 grade 8s who
managed to beat all their peers in the 25 degree heat and sunshine.
Top 5 OVERALL Boys - Everett Orgnero, Taro Hirose, Jonny

Top 5 OVERALL Girls - Steph Mattson, Caylee LaBranche/Brittany

Our goal of passing $15,000 in fundraising was also met in the

of $17,102! Absolutely Incredible!! Our Top Individual Fundraisers
overall were - Donovan Matthews - $925, Sierra Inglis - $1021, and
Alison Wilson - $1200. A huge thank you to everyone for their
donations and helping support the fight against cancer.
All of our efforts did not go unnoticed- the Terry Fox Foundation
contacted us to feature Edge in their newsletter! They loved
our “If...Then...” theme and quotes from our students. Pictures of the
event will also be part of their upcoming publication. Proud time to
be a Mountaineer!

AJGA Sunriver Open
August 20-23, 2012
Nic Scrymgeour and Geoff Fry had quite a
week down at the Sunriver Junior Open in
Oregon. Nic finished 3 under par then won
in a playoff while Geoff finished even par
and tied for 6th place. The AJGA hosts the
biggest junior tournaments in the world and
is a great stepping stone for those juniors
hoping to play college golf in the future.
All the results of the event can be found at
www.ajga.org.
Antigua Invitational Championships – September 7-8, 2012
Five Senior High golfers represented the Edge School at the annual High School team event held at McCormick Ranch GC in Scottsdale, AZ and improved on the 16th place finish a year ago with an impressive 5th
place finish. The event featured some of the top US high school teams from Arizona, Texas, Florida, Illinois,
Louisianna, Utah, as well as the winning team from Hawaii. Nic Scrymgeour led the way with rounds of 69
and 72. Geoff Fry finished with a pair of 75’s. Daniel Ahn followed up his opening round of 83 with a solid
75 that moved the team up from 7th after day 1 to the 5th place finish, one spot ahead of
defending champion and host Hamilton High. Jon Fry shot rounds of 83 and 81. Andrew Brown was 85
and 88. More information on the event can be found at www.anhsgi.org.
Alberta Open – September 13-15, 2012
Four golfers from the Edge Golf program recently participated in the Alberta Open held at Carnmoney GC
in Calgary. Nic Scrymgeour finished T16 with rounds of 76, 71 and 74. Geoff Fry finished T20 with rounds
of 73, 72 and 79. Jon Fry and Daniel Ahn both missed the cut after two rounds. The event is held annually
and is a great chance for the juniors to play with some of Alberta’s top professional golfers. Information on
the event can be found at www.albertagolf.org.
Semiahmoo Junior – October 13-14, 2012
There will be ten students attending the Northwest Junior Tour event coming up in mid October. The event is

Edge U14 Boys and U14 Girls
Outdoor 2012 Teams:
It was a very successful season for both teams. There was a lot of
growth and development. The road isn’t always easy but both teams
are taking huge strides forward and improving. Congratulations to
both teams for doing so well during the season and at provincials.
The boys did a great job coming back in the last game against
Cochrane and winning it. It showed a lot of pride and
determination and most of all - great team work. The boys were
unlucky falling short the first two games but turned it around in the
last two games. Excellent job boys!
The Girls did a great job as well. They finished second in the season
and went undefeated at provincials but due to a goal differential the
girls won Bronze. Fantastic effort by the entire team!
Katie Allen, thank you for stepping up and playing goal the whole
weekend. Even though that is not your position and it is a tough
position to play we are all very proud of you for taking on that
challenge. You demonstrated that you are a true team player and
especially a true captain.
Thank you boys and girls for your dedication to the team. You are
paving the road to something great at Edge School. Both teams
started in tier 5 last outdoor season and quickly improved to become
strong Tier 3 teams in only 3 seasons. Phenomenal! This is not the
norm and we are confident that you will reach your goal of Tier 1
soon.
Congratulations Danielle Makar on winnng Gold at Provincials
with her U16 Tier 1 team. She will be representing Alberta at
Nationals Oct 2-8th in Charlottetown, PEI. Good Luck Danielle!
Congratulations Everett Orgnero on being selected to play for the Alberta Provincial team this summer. The
week was tense, it was as much a vehicle for learning and playing soccer as it was to learn how to work
with the pressure of scouting environments, new coaches and team mates and different tactic.
Demonstrating strong athleticism, team commitment and soccer skills- Everett was also chosen to play in
the All-Star game at the end of the week. He did an amazing job representing our team and Edge School.

Phys Ed News and ISAA updates
Students are now into their routines of PE, having their gymstrips and lockers ready to go each class. September winds up the football/soccer/belly baseball module and we move into volleyball for October. Please
remember to send a note or email if your son or daughter needs to be excused from regular activities. They
will still come to gym and help out in some other way - scorekeeper, ref, DJ, etc.
The girls volleyball season has begun with home court advantage for the first couple of weeks. They were off
to a great start with a big first match win against Rundle Academy. Congrats to players - Rachelle, Samara,
Sam, Wylie, Kate, Shelby, Sloane, Lindsey, Kennedy and Ashley! Looking forward to a great season.
Intramural action has started up for Junior students with the first activity - Handball.

Great work Alexis Harle!
Alexis has been playing spring baseball for 7 years now and
was scouted to tryout for Team Alberta in June. After many
cuts she made the team and had the great opportunity to play
for Team Alberta in the Nationals in Nova Scotia in August.
It was an amazing experience for her to play at this level of
baseball. While Hockey is her main sport she also loves
baseball!

Grades 5/6 Outdoor Ed Recap!
On September 21st, students in grades 5 & 6 took part in an event-filled day & evening of outdoor
education. They played team-building games that allowed them to get to know one another, cheered on our
Girls’ Prep and Bantam Boys’ teams in two games, completed a variety of challenges in a scavenger hunt
around the school, and listened to ghost stories on a very dark soccer pitch. Mrs. MacNeil, Ms. Ellis, and
Miss O’Hara lead the students through the activities with the help of grade 12 students Daniel, Jenna, and
Lorraine. Everyone had a great time - what a wonderful way to show our Mountaineer spirit!

Updates from the GP Dance Program
It has been a great month in the Grande Prairie Edge Dance program. With the official number of dancers
at 24 it is sure to be a great year.
We are excited to welcome a returning guest faculty member to the school, Miss Amy Gardner. She has
been busy since the last time she was here. She spent the summer dancing in the Olympic promotion for
Coca-Cola, performed with Justin Beiber, and is working towards becoming a certified STOTT pilates
instructor!
We are looking forward to participating in an Alberta Culture Days celebration at the provincial building in
Grande Prairie. This is a province wide event and we are proud to support our local art community.
Once again the dancers will have travel opportunities this year. The junior company will be headed to the
Edge Calgary campus in February, the intermediate company will be joining Edge Fort McMurray and head
to Los Angeles to dance at Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm and the senior company along with Edge
Calgary dancers will be visiting the University of Arizona Dance Program in Tuscon, Arizona. All locations
will help our dancers gain experience in dance and life!
