Electric Propulsion Systems Electric Propulsion Diesel-Electric Propulsion • Efficient, compact and robust brushless permanent magnet motor for silent and carefree boating. • Closed cooling system that combines the lubrication of mechanics and motor cooling. The sail drive acts as a heat exchanger. • Sleek hydrodynamic profile on leg provides minimal resistance in all sailing conditions. • 1.93:1 reduction with custom made bevel gear for efficient propulsion. • Integrated controller for compact size and easy plug & play installation. • Flexible rubber mounting to the hull ensures a smooth vibration free and silent ride as well as easy installation. • Large propeller diameter for high propulsion efficiency. by Propulsion OCEANVOL Electric Sail Drive 274 260 Regenerating is achieved by letting the propeller turn while sailing and using the motor as a dynamo, thus reducing the weight and cost of the battery bank. Models available for sailing yachts from 16 feet to 45 feet (up to 10 tons). Power range: 5 kW to 13 kW (can replace combustion engines up to 40 HP). The average required power is 1.5 kW to 2 kW for each ton. The motors are reversible and can regenerate the batteries under sails (the water drag on the propeller drives the gear shaft). Battery regeneration makes it possible to reduce the size of the battery bank while providing sufficient energy. Electric drive system can be installed as initial equipment or as retrofit. It is very easy to replace a combustion engine by an electric drive system: » Acoustic nuisance and vibrations. Warm up delay. Inevitable pollution: oil / fuel spillages, vapor relief). Not easy to handle. Complex installation. Heavy maintenance: filters, belts, oil changes… Voltage Current (limited by a controller) Power output Average efficiency Battery regeneration Nominal motor speed Nominal torque Maximum torque Reduction ratio Rotation speed of propeller shaft Weight: motor+ console Combustion engine equivalence Recommended boat size » The engine compartment has been cleaned. The shaft and motor bracket are kept in place. With an electric motor, the system is virtually silent. The power kicks in immediately, making harbor maneuvering easier and more accurate. The environment is free of oil spills, smell of diesel and exhaust fumes. Maintenance consists only in replacing the brushes and the gear belt. The generator receives continuous up-to-date information on the battery bank and it automatically starts whenever the low voltage set point is reached. The objective is to optimize the global efficiency of the propulsion system in order to reduce energy consumption and to pollute as little as possible. The generator works at constant speed and nominal power for an enhanced efficiency. Benefits: - Autonomy (generator). - Low maintenance. - Power and torque available at any time. - Battery capacity available for other equipments. Battery controller Lithium ion battery bank Watertight remote switch BMS (Battery Management System) Electric sail drive Lithium ion battery can be charged in a very short time thus optimizing the generator operation and minimizing the system weight and required space. Lithium ion batteries can deliver high currents without capacity losses which make them very attractive for an electric propulsion system. Along with a high capacity battery charger, a system using this battery technology is almost completely autonomous. Combo inverter / charger Generator 146
