“Undy 500.”
You may be asking yourself, “What is the Undy
500?”
It’s an effort by the
Clinton County Great Start
Parent Coalition to collect
at least 500 pairs of new
underwear and socks for
the annual Project Connect
/ Back to School event
coming Aug. 31. New underwear and socks in any size
are welcome and can be
dropped off at the Clinton
County 4-H Fair, Aug. 1-5.
Project Connect is a
one-day event designed to
connect families and individuals in need with available resources, all in one
convenient location. Part
of event includes providing
families in need with the
goods and services needed
for a successful start to the
school year.
Undy 500 was created in
hopes of collecting enough
new underwear and socks
for every individual who
attends Project Connect.
To make it easy for
people to contribute, Undy
500 collection boxes will be
placed at the Clinton County
4-H Fair Aug. 1-5.

Park expansion makes sense
The allocation of county funds for a 260-acre addition
to Motz Park is sound public policy. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund was established in 1976 to purchase land for public recreation. The trust is entirely
funded by the sale of mineral rights on state owned land.
More than $800 million has been contributed to fund 1,200
state and local recreation projects.
To secure the $1.88 million in trust fund dollars, the
county is required to make a $470,000 match. The county’s contribution comes from the Public Improvement
Fund. This money was set aside by county taxpayers for
capital improvements and park development. No general
fund dollars (annual operating dollars) are to be used to
acquire this land.
The county has continued to reduce expenses in our
operating budget to meet lowered property tax revenues.
We have been fiscally responsible but that doesn’t mean
we can’t invest in the future when it is practical.
Marie Howe’s letter in opposition in the July 10 edition would indicate that she wants every county in the
state, except Clinton County, to benefit from our shared
heritage of the sale of oil and gas leases on state land.
Muskegon, Oakland and Wayne counties would continue
to improve the quality of life of their communities at the
expense of Clinton County residents.
I will not short change the next generation by passing
up a golden opportunity to bolster recreation opportunities for county residents with tax dollars that can only be
used for this purpose.

I have Fibromyalgia. I was in pain every

all they offered was more medications

I found the Wycoff Wellness Center on the

perform a detailed history and

Be watchful for grubs in cats
W
arning! This
article contains
information that
is graphic and disgusting.
Now that summer is
upon us, cat owners, who
are not applying
Advantage Multi to their
feline friend, may find a
“Breathing Hole” on their
kitty’s neck, face, back,
chest, nearly anywhere.
What’s a “Breathing
Hole?” It is an opening,
in a cat’s skin, made by
a maggot from the fly
species known as
cuterebra through which
it breathes. Most people
refer to this as a “grub.”
How do cats become
infected with a cuterebra
larva? They rub against
an area where the fly
has deposited her eggs.
Typically, this is near a
rodent or rabbit burrow.
The fly larvae attach
themselves to the cat’s fur.
While the kitty is grooming
itself it ingests the larvae.
Subsequently they migrate
to a site elsewhere on
the body, growing just
below the surface of the
skin. At this location a
breathing hole is formed.

HEALTH
Dr. Stephen

Often, within days, a slow
moving larva is seen inside
the breathing hole. As you
may imagine, the
excrement and infection
that occurs makes the host
very ill! Within a few
weeks the larva crawls out
the breathing hole, falls to
the ground, and pupates
into an adult fly.
If you think your kitty
is safe because it resides
indoors, you are wrong!
Pesky flies, just like
mosquitoes that carry
heartworm larva, easily
enter our homes! Although
indoor only cats less
frequently get grubs, it
does happen.
What makes the cat so
ill? The reaction to the fly
larvae cause is substantial!
Initially larvae feed on
fluid formed by the kitty’s
immune system due to
their presence. Further
tissue damage occurs from
the maggot’s excrement.
This causes considerable
swelling giving the maggot
fluid to feed on. Many
times the odor that
originates from the site
is putrid! Surprisingly, the
site is relatively pain free.
Although the host is toxic
from the grub’s
excrement, they live on.
Maturation occurs
within a few weeks. At
about three-quarters of an
inch in length and one
half an inch in diameter
the grub is ready to exit
through the breathing hole.
It falls to the ground and
pupates into an adult fly
and repeat the process.
Rarely does the
infection caused by a
cuterebra fly kill the host,
making it an ideal parasite.
Unfortunately sAome
kittens do succumb to the
infection.
What should you do if
your kitty is lethargic, has
an elevated temperature,
has a swelling on his/her
neck, face or back, and
an odor originating from a
“breathing hole?”
Call your veterinarian

temperature and reduce
the swelling an injection
of a sustained release nonsteroid anti-inflammatory
may be given.
To lessen the bacterial
burden, an injection of
an antibiotic may be
administered. This is
followed up with an oral
form. I recommend
warm compresses for
10 minutes four times a
day be administered to
decrease the swelling and
clean up the breathing
hole. Sometimes it takes
three or more weeks for
the wound to heal.
FYI: Although it’s not
a label claim, I have yet
to see a kitty, protected
with the monthly topical
combination flea and
heartworm preventive,
have a grub.

Now how many
have said their hearing aids make
some sounds too loud, don’t work
well in noise, or they can’t tell if they
are really helping them hear at all?
Audiologists and dispensers try to
make hearing aids function the best
they can to give the patient a good
outcome. But there were always a lot
of difficulties surrounding comfort
and understanding of speech.
Let’s say you have
a small child,
an average sized
woman,
wo
and a very
large man, all with
the same hearing
loss. All hearing
aids would be
programmed the
same way, according to the hearing
aid manufacturers software. But the
ear canals themselves must figure
into the process, as well. Without
diving into too much physics, ear
canal size and shape for the child
would be quite small. The woman
would be close to the average size
ear canals and the man’s ear canals
would be quite large and long. The
child would receive too much power
from the hearing aids, the woman’s
fitting would be close, and the man’s
hearing aids would seem very quiet.
All hearing aid manufacturers base
their science off the average ear. But
no one has the average ear.
Live speech mapping is the latest
innovative approach to hearing aid
fitting which uses natural speech to
show how effective digital hearing

the appropriate credentials
R
by healthcare providers with
aids are in helping you to hear
speech. With digital speech mapping,
an actual speech signal, not tones or
hissing sounds, is used to test the
hearing aids while inserted in the
patient’s ears. This allows for the shape
and size of the patient’s ear canals to be
included in the fitting process, as well
as using the most important signal we
hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings
to be successful, speech must be
appropriately amplified with respect
to loudness, clarity, and comfort.
Soft speech should be perceived as
soft, moderate speech sounds should
be perceived as moderate, and loud
speech sounds should not reach the
patient’s discomfort level.
Speech mapping helps to provide
a clear “visual” sense of the hearing
loss, and the benefits or perhaps the
limitations that your current hearing
aids offer in relation to actual speech.
While wearing hearing aids, a tiny
probe microphone is inserted into
the ear canal while the hearing aids
are running, then a stimulus (voices/
music) is used to measure the output
and shows if the hearing aids are
amplifying sounds appropriately. The
Live Speech Map is displayed on a
monitor through easily-understood
graphics so that you can actually
see sounds that are missing and be
presented with a clear visual sense
of hearing loss and aided benefits
relating to actual speech. It allows
you to see graphically just how the
aid is performing in a live, real world
environment.
Once we see what sounds you’re
missing, we’ll be able to tune your
personal hearing aids until it restores
the missing speech patterns and
tones. So, not only will you hear the
difference a hearing aid makes with
your speech, you’ll be able to see the
sounds being restored visually as
well. A successful hearing aid fitting
should be a dynamic, patient-centered

DeWITT — Former DeWitt baseball standout Cody
Grice will get his shot at professional baseball.
Grice signed with the New York Yankees and
reported June 11 to their training facility in Tampa,
Fla., after hearing his name called
in the 12th round of the MLB FirstYear Player Draft June 7.
“I was hearing I’d be drafted
everywhere - not a whole lot (of
scouts said) that high, more like
(round) 20, 30, 40 even,” said Grice,
who will forego his senior season
at Grand Valley State. “I was really
unprepared to hear my name called
that high.”
Grice earned GLIAC player of
the year and second-team Division Grice
II All-America honors by hitting
.381 on 69 hits - 23 of them for extra bases - with four
home runs, 59 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He was the
fourth-highest GVSU player taken in the draft and the
Lakers’ first pick since 2003.
“Obviously, the Yankees are such a great and historic
organization. Just to have my name be part of that is an
honor in its own,” the 2008 DeWitt High grad said. “I was
very surprised to go that high in the draft also. Both factors kind of helped me make my decision (to sign) a little
easier.”
