MAIN STREET (ECHO BAY WATER FRONT) CITY OF NEW ROCHELLE Along New Rochelle’s waterfront, the City is working closely with Forest City Residential to transform land on Echo Bay—a sheltered inlet on the beautiful Long Island Sound—that is currently inaccessible and environmentally stressed into a vibrant, mixed-use community with extensive public parkland. Linked to this project is the potential adaptive reuse of a former Armory, also situated on Echo Bay. This redevelopment project consists of the construction of 285 rental units, 23,800 square feet of neighborhood retail uses and over four acres of public open space on the waterfront, creating view corridors from adjacent neighborhoods. The site is composed of several City properties including the City’s public works yard—anticipated to be relocated—and a former Con Edison site, and is adjacent to the Municipal Marina. The City’s vision for the redevelopment of Echo Bay is to enhance views and vistas of the Long Island Sound from Main Street; to create public access to the water for local residents and visitors; and to provide residential living on the waterfront at a density that is in scale with development elsewhere in the community. 21 22 Get Your Message Out. Main Street (U.S. Route 1). Through the adaptive reuse of the Armory, the City seeks to: • Rehabilitate and preserve a historic structure with distinctive architectural features; • Activate a currently underutilized site for the public’s enjoyment and benefit; • Complement and enhance the surrounding revitalization of the New Rochelle shoreline.
