ANSWER KEY:
“You’ll never take my snow fort alive!” shouted Amanda. She started to throw snowballs,
and fat chunks of ice, at the attacking horde of rowdy boys from her home town. “I bet
my loyal snowmen guards have you shaking in your boots!”
As the boys ran to Amanda’s snow palace from the north, they swung makeshift swords of
scrap wood, and howled like wild animals. It was time for war. “I will take the front!”
bellowed Trevor. “The rest of you mount the assault from the far side!”
Amanda was on her own and terrified.

As you can see, this free sample is best utilized with students in grades 2-4. However, depending on the ability of
your students, you can still use this text in higher/lower grades too. We always stress not putting too much weight
on readability levels. They are a great starting point for selecting text for your students. Yet, student interest level,
as well as a whole host of other factors, will determine whether or not the text is actually readable. In addition,
students still get lots of value by periodically reading text outside of grade and skill level determinations.
Common Core Alignment:
This story and assessment addresses multiple standards in the Reading Literature strand of the Common Core State
Standards for your grade level, including RL.1, RL.4, and RL.10. Yet, these materials may apply to more of the
