If there were ever a job that called for so much actual blood, sweat and tears, it would be the job Lynea and her employees at the Cat House do every day. Taking care of nearly 1,000 cats is no small feat. It requires a kind of dedication that is a truly rare commodity, not to mention coordination and speed. Can you imagine what it must be like when that many cats are waiting for their morning meal? Employees start arriving at 4 am to get started on the monumental task of feeding the nearly 1,000 cats and scooping all those litter boxes. It all started innocently enough when Lynea went to the pound one day to find two kittens for her dad. She brought home an additional five kittens to foster and the ball started rolling and it just never stopped. Lynea spends a good part of her day on the phone. She receives dozens of calls daily from people needing help or advice. It can be heartbreaking, gut wrenching and downright infuriating. Many people genuinely need help or want to help in some way. There are also many people who are not responsible pet owners and want Lynea to take on the results of their irresponsible behavior. Those are the ones that fall into the infuriating category and Lynea will very likely let you know how she feels about that. Take heart though, Lynea will also advise you as to the most efficient ways to find homes for your kittens while in the same breath she will be offering to spay your cat. Spays are only $20 and neuters are $10. C’mon now; when fixing your cat is that cheap, what excuse could there possibly be TO NOT have it done? They will even do small dogs for $30. Slipping in the appointment number here…638-0490. It takes a lot of money to feed and provide health care to so many animals. The Cat House on the Kings receives no government or taxpayer monies. We rely completely on donations from the public, grants from companies such as Petco/The Petco Foundation and a contest here and there. Lynea has already spent a good portion of her retirement money to keep The Cat House on the Kings up and running. We can all show Lynea how much we support and appreciate her lifelong dedication to animal rescue and adoption. Please come out and join us at the Cat House on the Kings for our 20th Anniversary Open House Fundraiser. Meet the amazing Lynea and help us celebrate 20 years of feline rescue and betterment here in the San Joaquin Valley. We will see you there! (7120 Kings River Road, Parlier) In Memory of…. The Cat House on the Kings is pleased and very excited to announce the future opening of our very own adoption center at the Fresno Petco on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno. The papers are signed and construction is expected to begin soon. We look forward to a long, successful, and rewarding partnership with Petco. This adoption center will be instrumental in finding forever homes for as many cats (and dogs) as possible. We will continue to hold our adoption events on Saturdays from 10-2. The assistance we receive from Petco and The Petco Foundation seems to be limitless. The Petco Foundation recently awarded the cat house on the Kings a spay and neuter grant so that we are able to offer low-cost or even free spay and neuter services. We also received a grant (“We are Family Too”) designed to help out families that may be struggling to keep a beloved pet in the home. We are so humbled by Petco’s immense and continuous generosity. Petco’s support does not stop there. Our local Petco store cashiers held a “spay and neuter” donation contest to see who could garner the most contributions from their customers. Those awesome people raised a whopping $1,700.00 for the Cat House on the Kings! But wait, there’s more! Petco manager Carl Giorgini and Michelle Shannon nominated the Cat House on the Kings in a contest for the Top 100 no-kill shelters in the country. Several of the employees wrote letters and as a result we were chosen as one of the top “100 Celebrations” Petco Foundation charitable partners This brought us a check for another $1,000. To Petco Foundation charity partners, there are just not enough “Thank Yous” for all you have done, all you have done and all you continue to do to help the Cat House on the Kings further our mission of animal rescue/adoption and promoting the necessity of spaying and neutering. The Leonard X. Bosack & Bette M. Kruger Charitable Foundation has awarded the Cat House on the Kings an unrestricted grant of $5,150! This foundation privately funds qualified non-profit organizations or projects that promote animal welfare. We thank Rossnina Van Dort for securing yet another grant for us with her outstanding grant writing skills. This money will be put to immediate use in our most critical areas of need. Community Impact Award from Alley Cat Allies In honor of National Feral Cat Day, (October 16, 2012), The Cat House on the Kings has been awarded the Alley Cat Allies Community Impact Award for our work with feral cats. Rescue groups from all over the United States submitted their proposals. Our thanks go out once again to Rossnina Van Dort for writing our winning grant proposal. The Cat House on the Kings was chosen as one of the 22 winners from over 270 applications. We were also the only rescue from California that was selected. The award comes with a $1,000 check so that we may continue our work with feral cats. Thank you Alley Cat Allies! On June 22, 2012 A former Alley cat from Oman Middle East Cats Now at The Cat House on the Kings On June 22, 2012, the final chapter of an epic 8,000-mile journey for six very lucky cats came to a happy conclusion. Lynea Lattanzio, founder and director of The Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, California, drove to the San Francisco Airport to meet the five kitties arriving from Oman (United Arab Emirates) and one 3-legged kitty from Kuwait. Along with volunteer Jackie Dale, Lynea jumped through the hoops more commonly known as customs and waited hours for the cats to Cats waiting for their customs papers be released to them. An American woman living in the mountains of Oman, Sara Lawrence, had contacted The Cat House on the Kings on behalf of two English ladies who feed and care for the thousands of homeless cats in Muscat, Oman. They trap many of the strays, have them spayed or Sara Lawrence of Oman visits Omani cats neutered and then release them back onto the street. There are simply no homes for them so their goal is to reduce the feral population as much as possible. They were desperate to find homes for five kittens they had rescued and grown to love. They were not able to keep them permanently and had been unable to place them in homes. These cats were soon due to be released back onto the streets. The alternatives for cats in the Middle East are grim. Unwanted pets are frequently taken out to the desert and left to die. There are very few animal shelters and they generally only take dogs. Food and water are extremely scarce and the homeless cats are frequent targets of cruel and vicious acts. Conincidently, an American couple living in Kuwait contacted The Cat House on the Kings after seeing the Animal Planet show “Must Love Cats”. Zach Holden and Ashley Hartley both live and work in Kuwait. Zach has personally rescued numerous cats and found homes for them in the United States. They took in a kitten that Ashley rescued as it was crawling through traffic while dragging a horribly broken leg. They took it to the only vet in Kuwait for treatment. The leg was so badly damaged that amputation was the only answer for the kitten, now named Buddy Lee. They nursed Buddy Lee back to health but due to the fact that Zach already had his limit of cats and Ashley lived in company housing, they were forced to find Buddy Lee a new home. Lynea agreed to take Buddy Lee provided they were able to get him on the same flight as the Omani cats, which they did. Kuwait and Oman are home to some of the largest feral cat colonies in the world. Virtually no one spays or neuters their animals. The homeless cats (and dogs) endure 5 months of searing summer temperatures that often rise up to 130°. Frequent dust storms make breathing difficult. People deliberately run the animals over with their cars, set out poisoned food and commit heinous acts of unbelievable cruelty against them. Police often come out and shoot the stray dogs and cats, leaving them to die in the street. Lynea loads the van at SFO The British ladies, Lesley Lewins and Christine Barlow, raised the money to ship the five cats from Muscat, Oman where the circumstances are especially dire. In the past seven years they have trapped, neutered and released approximately 3,000 cats. They are doing an amazing job of trying to reduce the feral population in their area. Lesley often spends her own money to help feed the cats however there is little to no cat food available in the stores. Lesley convinced the big hotels to save the kitchen scraps for her. She cooks everything up into a big sort of stew and then she drives around in the middle of the night feeding as many as 100 cats a night. After a lot of hard work and coordination, these six lucky cats will now call The Cat House on the Kings home. They will live in peace and serenity while they wait for their forever homes. A lot of hearts were broken the day the six cats were loaded onto the airplane to begin their unique journey. But these people felt that it was worth all the time, effort and money to make certain that the cats they loved so much would be going to a safe and loving place. Follow the progress of the Omani cats and Buddy Lee on our website; www. cathouseonthekings.com Editors Note: Buddy Lee was quickly adopted; however, he was returned to us when the adopter discovered she was allergic to cats. She was heartbroken to have to bring Buddy Lee back as she said he was an amazing and intelligent cat. We hope Buddy Lee finds his forever home soon. Jackie and Lynea greet Buddy Lee of Kuwait Did Your Taxes –Helped the Kitties Every year H & R Block and the Cat House on the Kings join forces to raise money for the Cat House. Popular Summer Vacation Destination: The Cat House on the Kings! Summertime brought a flurry of visitors to The Cat House on the Kings. We were treated to guests from all over the state and even the world. Below read stories and email excerpts from some of our happy guests. Blue and Ben - In mid June, 10-year old Blue West and his friend Ben, driven by Blue’s mom, headed out from their home in Monterey. Blue was on his way to camp at Hume Lake. Blue is a big fan of The Cat House on the Kings so he wanted to stop and visit before heading out to camp. His mom, Debra West, who is also involved in animal rescue, was excited to visit our facility too. They made a three-hour stop to visit Lynea and pet the kitties. Blue presented Lynea with $195 that he collected to help the kitties. We were so touched by this young man’s show of generosity. Lynea Debra West with son gave him a tote bag and a t-shirt to take with him Blue and friend Ben to camp. We think we have a future kitty rescuer in the making! Here is an excerpt of an email from Blue’s mom following their visit; “Lynea, What a joy it was to meet you and to enjoy the benefits of your heart. On the drive to Hume Lake, Blue entertained thoughts of helping you care for your cats. Thank you again for doing what you do.” Debra West Jeanne in a moment of pure bliss Jeanne and Jeremy - The latter part of June brought us some visitors all the way from Ireland. Jeanne and Jeremy had stumbled across the Cat House on the Kings website. They decided that the Cat House on the Kings would be just as important a stop on their vacation to America as San Francisco or Yosemite. They spent the night here in our guest room. When they left to continue on with their vacation, they promised to “spread the word” and to return as soon as possible. Here is an excerpt from an email that Lynea received from Jeanne: “Thank you so much for the lovely stay at that fantastic place of yours. You are a great and amazing woman. I hope one day to be doing what you are doing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness, hospitality and everything you have done for the past 20 years.” Jeanne Susanne Joanne Maas-Susanne arrived in the United States from the Netherlands on July 10th. Susanne planned to come to the Cat House on the Kings for an extended stay of 2 weeks to do volunteer work. Susanne handling Lynea a She stayed with check for $500 one of our board members, Lin Faurie. Susanne brought a donation of $500 that she collected from her classmates in the Netherlands. A very impressive donation from one so young! Susanne went home on July 24th. We eagerly look forward to Susanne making a return trip to the Cat House on the Kings in the near future. Betsy and Maddie - Betsy and Maddie are two sisters from Riverside, California. They contacted the Cat House on the Kings with a request to come and visit for a week. They wanted to pitch in and work. They arrived near the end of July, with their trip overlapping a few days into the visit of Susanne. Also staying with Lin Faurie, three girls got along fabulously and they all worked very hard for the Cat House. Lynea received this handwritten note from the sisters: “Thank you for being open and accepting to my sister and I volunteering this summer. Thank you for being Maddy Simmons, the amazing person you are to Susanne Maas, Betsy save so many lives daily. We Simmons enjoying hope to see you next summer!” free time! The Cat House on the Kings is a favorite destination spot for our cat-loving fans and supporters. We often get visitors from other states and countries. Some just want to stop by for the day to visit. Then there are those who intend to stay awhile and volunteer their time to work here. There is never a shortage of work, and we are thankful that there are always people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and make a difference. However, the Cat House on the Kings only has one guest room. So the big question is: where will our visitors stay? Good news! We have found three hotels in our area that have graciously offered to provide discounted rates for visitors to the Cat House on the Kings. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Cat House on the Kings is the Edgewater Inn of Reedley. A short drive further is the Marriott Fairfield Inn and Suites of Kingsburg or the La Quinta Inn and Suites, in nearby Fowler. Lin and Francie made a presentation to the student body telling them all about the work we do here at the Cat House on the Kings. They brought live visual aids in the form of 2 puppies and 8 kittens. The students had a surprise presentation of their own. The students raised an astounding $1,000 for the Cat House on the Kings. In These are just a few of the children surrounding addition, they teacher Marla Johnson and Lin Faurie helped to make some comfy beds and blankets for our feline and canine residents. They pinned notes of love and support to each bed. Lynea’s favorite was the boy who wrote, “I really like dogs better than cats.” “Got to appreciate their honesty,” Lynea quipped. What we really appreciate is the knowledge that there are so many children who have love and compassion for animals. The children were helpful, gentle, and respectful. Lin and Francie were truly impressed with how the children handled the animals in a responsible and loving manner. We will create a place on the wall in our kitten quarters where we will hang all the pictures of the children cuddling with the What do you mean when you say, “Boys don’t like cats?!” animals. We hope that someday they will take a trip to the Cat House on the Kings to see firsthand how we operate and take care of almost 1,000 cats and a few dogs too. Marla Jackson, whose tour of the Cat House on the Kings was the precursor to the presentation, has offered to make more pet beds to sell in our store. We want to thank Marla and Gettysburg Elementary School for inviting us to their school campus. We also offer our kudos to the parents who have obviously done a fantastic job raising caring, good-hearted children who have excellent values and are kind to animals. These awesome kids give the Cat House on the Kings hope for the future! “We want to take these two kittens home. What about it, Mom?” Odwalla Plant In Dinuba Donates Food On Friday, August 10, Lin Faurie from the Cat House on the Kings and her grandson Casey had the pleasure of driving to the Odwalla plant in Dinuba, CA, to pick up a donation of cat food. Originally, the donated food was meant for Friends of Noah’s Ark, but Kay Nelson, a canine animal rescuer at Friends of Noah’s Ark, was kind enough to share the donated food with the Cat House on the Kings in Parlier, CA. Since Noah’s Ark rescues only dogs, they had no real need for the feline food. The Cat House was really excited to receive donated food to help feed the 800-1,000 cats/kittens who currently reside at the Cat House on the Kings. While at Odwalla, they had the pleasure of meeting Rena Garcia who had originally contacted Kay about the pet food drive that Odwalla was conducting for animal rescue groups in the area. Kay graciously informed the Cat House that cat food would also be available. We are extremely grateful that people at Odwalla recognize the very definite needs of animal rescue groups. Their generosity will not soon be forgotten! Lin Faurie and grandson Casey picking up Odwalla donation Get Zazzled! The Big Fix Gulu-Uganda Project The Cat House on the Kings recently donated first aid supplies to The Big Fix Gulu Project sponsored by the Central Valley Animal Coalition. Big Fix Gulu Project is a Ugandan slum outreach program that is run by two former street boys who now help the homeless children of the Kampala slums. The Big Fix program will bring free veterinary services and John Hinton of Central Valley Animal animal education to Northern Coalition picking up our donation Uganda beginning in October. This project will include spay and neuter services to the animals of people who would never otherwise be able to afford it. The Cat House on the Kings is happy to be able to assist in this worthy endeavor, and we wish the Big Fix Gulu Project the best of luck and Ugandans waiting to take advantage success. of free veterinary services Black Cat Fundraiser a Howling Success! The Cat House on the Kings held its 2nd Annual Facebook Black Cat Appreciation Day Fundraiser on August 16th and 17th. Our anonymous Facebook Queen conducted the fundraiser which netted the Cat House on the Kings $2,424.84 in one-time Paypal donations!! Our number one supporter and volunteer, Karen Rae, matched the first $250 in donations. In addition, we signed up a few more kitty sponsors, and several people promised to mail in their donations by check. The Cat House on the Kings has a large percentage of black cats among its many residents. This is largely due to the fact that many people are superstitious about black cats. Witches are often portrayed with black cats further fueling the myths. You’ve heard the old adage about black cats crossing your path being bad luck, right? Well, I can imagine that at some point in history someone had a black cat cross their path and then something really bad happened to that unfortunate person. Since people quite often associate closely occurring events, some superstitious and perhaps influential person, declared that somehow the black cat must have been the cause of this person’s misfortune and an “old wives’ tale” was born. Fortunately, some people really like black cats. One of our supporters, George Ripley, only adopts black cats because he realizes how often they are passed over for a more colorful animal. “We are very glad to give our two sweet babies, Pablo and Carlos, a loving home,” said George. “We primarily adopt black kittens or cats because we know that due to age-old prejudices, people are afraid of them and do not adopt them because they think of them as “bad luck” or “evil.” Nothing can be further from the truth. They bring joy and love, but because of the misconceptions and superstitions, these beautiful and loving creatures are often deprived of the love they deserve.” The Cat House on the Kings would be happy to show you our lovely selection of black cats. Please note that during the month of October, we suspend our public adoptions of black cats until Halloween has passed. My family and I fell in love with the two kittens that we were fostering, Kilroy and Natalie. The two, 3-week old siblings were found in a box near Cricket Hollow with the temperature approaching 105°. They are now happy, healthy members of our family. My husband laughingly commented; “I’m not sure which was worse, feeding and cleaning them every two hours when they were tiny, or now having them wreck the house and play on top of us at night!” The Cat House on the Kings was recently stunned and thrilled beyond belief when we were delivered a $3,000 riding lawn mower from Amazon. com. We are quite anxious to thank the still anonymous donor. We also have less expensive items on our Amazon wish list too. We are feeling very fortunate as we also won The Animal Rescue Site Challenge.
