The Hatteras 53 is widely considered a classic yachting design. Few American motoryachts of
her era came close to matching the Hatteras 53 in comfort and luxury, and none could match
the quality construction long associated with the Hatteras brand. Heavily built on a solid
fiberglass hull with moderate beam and a shallow keel, the Hatteras 53’s expansive threestateroom interior was considered ideal in a 1970s/1980s motor yacht her size. Because the
galley and dinette are down, the salon is surprisingly spacious with sufficient room aft of the

lower helm to entertain a small-sized crowd. Note the wide side decks and deck access door to
starboard at the helm. Updates included the addition of stall showers in the aft guest head and
forward head in 1975; a redesigned low-profile flybridge in 1978; optional walkaround queen
bed in the master stateroom in 1978; and an increase in the fuel capacity (to 700 gallons) in
1980.
