The opening lead is normal enough, though one avoids a minor suit
on this auction, as no Stayman bid was used. However, a lead from
Q 10 8 2 is normally a strong lead, but not now.

You have seven top tricks, and the extra must come from Diamonds.
There is an inference that West does not have four of a major, or he
might have led it, and the lead of the 2 of Clubs implies a four card
suit, so West is probably 3-3-3-4 or 3-2 in the majors. That implies
that East has only two Diamonds, hopefully one being the Ace. Win
the Jack of Clubs in your hand, go to the high Spade in Dummy, and
lead a Diamond. If East wins the Ace, you now have nine tricks. If
he ducks, play the Queen of Diamonds, lead a small Diamond, and
DUCK in dummy. West wins the Ace, and you have your tricks.
The play in Diamonds is known as an “obligatory finesse”, and
comes up fairly often. Well played.

THIS MONTH’S RECIPE
“Teriyaki Scallops”
2 tablespoons Canola Oil
1 tablespoon garlic, chopped
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 ½ pounds Patagonian scallops
¼ cup teriyaki sauce
Preheat oil in large saute pan on medium-high. Place garlic, peppers, and onions in pan, and cook 3-5 minutes or
until vegetables begin to soften.
Add scallops and teriyaki, cook and stir 3-4 minutes, or until scallops are opaque and firm.
Serves four.

“Kantar’s Bridge Tips”
1. Indirect or delayed major suit raises (not to be confused with simple preference) shows THREE card support and is forcing.
2. Know when NOT to raises partner’s one level major suit response when
holding three card support and a minimum opening (3 cases):
A. With 4-3-3-3 distribution.
B. With 4-4-3-2, weak support, and a strong doubleton.
C. With a strong SIX card suit and marginal support.
3. Count tricks, not points, with long suits, particularly with weak hands.
4. Don’t be afraid to open 1NT with a weak doubleton.
5. Concealing spot cards that are either lower than the one that has been led, or lower than the
one RHO plays, frequently confuses the issue.
6. Misfit hands require extra strength to make game. It is not a bad idea to deduct one point
from your hand when holding a singleton in partner’s main suit.
7. When you have a choice between rebidding a five card suit, or raising partner with three card
support and a side suit singleton, RAISE.
8. When raising partner with a singleton, it is better to have low trumps with your strength on
the outside. Why have partner waste a high trump when ruffing losers in your singleton suit?
9. If RHO intervenes, pass with nothing new to add.
10. Avoid rebidding 1 NT, or 2 NT with a small singleton in partner’s suit. At times, you may
have to make that rebid with a singleton honor. That is at least acceptable.
“TRUE STORY #2”
A sales rep, a secretary, and their boss are walking to lunch when they find an antique lamp. They rub it and a genie appears. The genie says “I’ll give each of you
one wish.” “Me first” says the sales rep. “I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a
speedboat, without a care in the world.” Puff, and he’s gone. The secretary says
“Me next! Me next! I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, and endless supply of Pina Coladas, and the love of my life.”
Puff! He’s gone. “O.K. you’re up,” the Genie says to the boss. The boss says “I
want those two back in the office after lunch.”
The moral is: Always let your boss have the first word.
