CONGRATULATIONS!
Upcoming Events:
Last week was wonderful for our college with
news of our students' outstanding success in
scholarship, and then over the weekend to see
our rowing team win the Head of the Harbour
regatta and be named Auckland Champions.

Scholarship Success
The NZ Scholarship exams are the pinnacle of New Zealand's qualification
system. They are highly competitive with only the top 3% of year 13 students
across New Zealand in each subject receiving an award.
35 scholarships is our best result on record. On a per student basis it places
Glendowie College in the top echelon of New Zealand schools.
So well done to the students for your hard work and ability. I also want to
congratulate the parents and staff who supported the students to excel. This
achievement is a team effort.
As parents, you commit large amounts of time and resources to supporting
your child and it's great to see the reward at the end.
Thank you to all staff … those who taught the students in specific scholarship
subjects and all other staff who have taught and supported the students at
various times.
Auckland Champions
I had the pleasure of attending the Head of the Harbour regatta last weekend
and see our crews do so well. It was a very proud day as our students picked
up multiple gold, silver and bronze medals and we kept hearing "Glendowie
College" announced over the sound system.
Well done to the students and, again, thank you to parents and staff
(especially our coaches) who make such a large commitment to our students.

The success of these students is very special. At the same time it's great to see so many other students getting
involved in other sports, leadership and academic opportunities and also "give it heaps". Sign-ups for sports (e.g.
football, cricket, netball, basketball) are higher than ever before, and auditions for the 2016 school production
("Blood Brothers") are now well under way. I wish all students well in these activities.
We're now at the end of week 3 and school life is very busy. Swimming sports was Monday just gone, Athletics will
be next week, Summerfest is coming up shortly, etc, etc. If you haven't already used it, I recommend that you go
to the calendar on our new school website and set up your favourites to stay in touch with what's going on.
A number of parents often ask about how they can find out about sports trials and practices. These are on our
school notices which you can view on our 'Parent Portal' – without logging in. Click on "Parent & Student Portal"
on the front page of our website, and then click "Notices" on the left-hand side of the screen.

Parent-Student-Form Teacher Conferencing
Parent-Student-Form Teacher Conferencing will be held at the school on


Wednesday, 2 March from 2.45pm to 5.00pm
Thursday, 3 March from 8.45am to 4.00pm
Please note:





students must accompany their parents/guardians to the interview and be in full school uniform
bookings for conferencing open on Wednesday, 24 February at midday
school will finish at 1.40pm on Wednesday, 2 March. Buses will be at school for the early finish
classes will not run on Thursday, 3 March
conferences will take place in students’ form room and will last 15 minutes
The conferences are about students’ goals for 2016 and overall academic progress. It is expected that students
will attend the meeting along with parents. It’s vital that everyone – students, parents and form teacher all share
a clear understanding of the students’ progress to date and future priorities.
The conference is with your child’s form teacher, not subject teachers. There will be the opportunity to discuss
subject specific progress at the mid-year Parent-Teacher interviews. Alternatively you can ask your child’s form
teacher to arrange contact with a subject teacher.
Bookings are done via the School Interviews website. We have sent all parents an email explaining how to access
this. Please contact our reception if you didn’t receive this. If you can’t attend this day, your child’s form teacher
will still meet with your child. If needed they can contact you subsequently.
Mr P Chand, Deputy Principal
Uniform Expectations
At Glendowie College we are proud of our uniform. Thank you to all students, parents and caregivers who ensure
that students wear their uniform correctly and appropriately.
However, there is an on-going concern both from the college and the community about the length of the girls’
skirts. The uniform regulations as outlined in the student planner and on the college website states that:
“Skirts must be of a length no shorter than the top of the knee.”
As a college we want to enforce this uniform requirement and request your assistance. If your daughter’s skirt
does not meet this requirement can you please take the necessary steps so that it does. How students are
presented reflects the community’s perceptions of the standards of education at Glendowie College.
Thank you for your support in this matter.

The Gateway Programme
Gateway has kicked off for the year with a good number of year
12 students having applied by preparing CV’s, cover letters and
attending an interview. The programme allows students in years
12-13 to explore career ideas, to achieve unit standard
assessments (20 NCEA credits), as well as contribute to NCEA
Vocational Pathway endorsements. These credits can also
contribute towards industry recognised qualifications such as
apprenticeships or National Certificates.
The current group of students have a variety of industries/careers
they would like to explore. These include automotive,
construction, carpentry, retail, electrical, hospitality and ICT. They
started this week with two days of health and safety in the work
place training. These unit standards are useful not only as
preparation for Gateway placements but also for finding part time
work and are a good addition to student’s CV’s.
For the past two years Gateway students have participated in The
Warehouse’s ‘Red Shirts in Schools Programme’ at Sylvia Park and
this year another group will start in term 2. The students spend
ten days on the shop floor learning about a retail operation as
well as providing customer service and dealing with all the
challenges of being in a work place for the first time.
All of the Gateway experiences have proven to be very valuable to
students either to explore career interests and/or as a first job
experience and as a way of building confidence and employment
skills.
The places for 2016 are filling fast as there is a limited number of
students due to funding restrictions.
Year 12 Gateway students at the
Health and Safety training this week
Interested students are advised to either speak to their year level Dean to check if the programme is appropriate
for them or email or see Mrs Caiger in Room 44. Students don’t need to have specific career ideas to apply.

Head of Harbour Success
The Rowing squad enjoyed a very successful weekend’s Rowing.
Friday was a great warm up with 7 Firsts, 7 Seconds and 6 Thirds at the Westlake Junior Regatta. We also picked
up the Westlake Trophy for winning the premier event of the regatta - the Boys Under 16 Eight.
Saturday was even better with 18 Firsts, 17 Seconds and 12 Thirds across all divisions, enough for our school to
confidently secure the Head of the Harbour Shield and the Girls Points Trophy, making us the Auckland
Champions (well until North Islands anyway).
Coach Josh Schmidt has a weighty bag of trophies and medals to be presented at assembly.
Karen Jonkers, Rowing
The following article is taken from the NZ Herald College Sport Wrap 17 February 2016:
Rowing
Glendowie College secured their position as Auckland schools rowing champions at Lake Pupuke on
Saturday, crowned overall Head of Harbour for the first time as well as girls' regatta champions.
Thirty-four Auckland schools and 879 athletes took to the water for the 80th Head of Harbour regatta.
Competing over a 900m short course, Glendowie achieved 18 firsts, 17 seconds and 12 thirds out of 65
starts, resulting in 11 gold, eight silver, and five bronze-medalling crews (first division only).
Glendowie finished the regatta with 153 points, 33 ahead of King's, champions for the past five years.
Glendowie's rowing programme has experienced rapid growth and a new coaching team, led by Josh
Schmidt and comprising Josh Everitt, Nick Tetley, Lily Millett and Danielle Schofield, has already
produced fine results leading up to the Maadi Cup in Twizel in early April.

Jordan was selected to represent the Northern Region, the Harlequins in the New Zealand Zonal Championships
to be held and televised live on Sky Sport on the evening of Saturday, 13 February.
Effectively a Senior Team and Junior Team of Men and Women are selected for each area (4 in total in New
Zealand) and each swimmer is allocated their best two events to race. It is hard and fast racing with plenty of
noise and cheering to be had during the evening. This is the link for viewing if you are interested
http://swimming.org.nz/event.php?id=1794
Over the holiday break Jordan competed in the New Zealand Spearfishing Championships held from Ruakaka in
Northland. He received two trophies for the Swim Fin Race (he won both Junior and Senior cups at once!) He
also got the second biggest Kingfish of the competition weighing in at 15.75 kg gutted and gilled. 6 hours in the
water each day with no boat support, just flippers and a float. Crazy in my view! Fiona Wilson

Glendowie Students in the Spotlight
Three Glendowie College students did a great job at tennis tournaments over the summer holidays.
Firstly they were ball kids at the Pascoes National Tournament and secondly at the ASB Men's ATP Classic, which
featured names such as Ferrer, Wilfred Tsonga and Anderson. Both tournaments were televised live on Sky
Sports.
The many, many hours put in was all voluntary and on numerous occasions when asked which school they went
to Jenny Clements was told 'the school should be extremely proud'. The photos show Susie Clements, James
Speirs and Kate Speirs.
