With so many new ranges being launched, the level of innovation bodes well for the retail stationery market. As the industry gears up for the Stationery Show in London in April, we present an overview of these recent events. Top Drawer raises the bar January’s Top Drawer, the first buying event of the spring season, welcomed visitors with a wide selection of brands and a stylish show design. Stationery exhibitors could be found in both Top Drawer, as well as HOME, the new interior design event that made its debut alongside its established counterpart. In addition, many new exhibitors were on hand, demonstrating the growing strength of the stationery sector, and these included Esmie, Mac & Ninny Paper Company, and Windsor & Woolf. Traditional brands, such as Archie Grand and Barbara Wiggins, were also on hand. Carolynne Wyper and Tracy Schotness from Leuchtturm1917 were busy celebrating the German notebook manufacturer’s highly successful first year in the UK, while Mac & Ninny, a brand new business, generated strong interest from UK and overseas buyers. Chia Maria showed its range of British designed, luxury accessories for the home, desk and travel. The collection includes the City Pinstripes and English Country Tweeds ranges of paper trays, travel wallets and portfolios. One of the highlights of the event for stationery buyers and stockists was the Bible Trend feature which outlined six different trends set to influence stationery design. Left: Leuchtturm1917: celebrating first year in the UK Below: Stationery trends revealed at Top Drawer 9 10 Show Reviews Positive atmosphere at Paperworld 2012 There was an air of optimism pervading this year’s Paperworld, Christmasworld and Creativeworld, which ran concurrently in Frankfurt. Despite the ongoing challenges of the global financial situation, some 3000 exhibitors from 72 countries were on hand to show their ranges to thousands of buyers from around the world. The show organisers report a significant increase in the number of eastern European and in particular Russian visitors, and slightly fewer buyers from southern Europe and Asia. In stationery and office products, including home office, this year’s Paperworld revealed a focus on sustainability, quality and a return to branded products. Traditional categories are becoming more transparent, as the marketing focus shifts to solving consumers’ problems rather than simply selling them products. This trend is expanding throughout the stationery sector, from school to home office, and from invitations to table decor. When it comes to colour, the trend in stationery is moving towards strong shades of orange and blue, with polka dots remaining popular, now often combined with lightly striped patterns. In high quality stationery, green, blue and pink remain the order of the day. Chia Maria: quintessentially English desk accessories Luxe emphasises luxury in stationery and desk accessories, with a focus on bronze, pewter and gold metallics, while Synth is all about colour confidence, blending traditional pastels and neons for a bold new look. Monotype celebrates monochrome and minimalism, with Papercraft Mac & Ninny: new company, new brand reflecting the growing consumer preference for authenticity and handmade, natural finishes. Infrared focuses on a strong, contemporary look achieved by layering shades of one colour, while Patriot heralds 2012 as the year to celebrate all things British. Show Reviews Upbeat atmosphere at Paperworld Strong colours dominate stationery sector Stationery sets continue to grow in popularity as well, as consumers go for a more co-ordinated look with matching pens, pencils, notepads and diaries. This is especially the trend in the increasingly lucrative gift stationery sector. This move towards co-ordination is also making inroads into table décor: today’s co-ordinated table follows a theme reflected in matching invitations, acceptance cards, name cards, paper tablecloths, napkins and thankyou cards. For younger target groups, where writing utensils are being combined with mobile communication devices such as smartphones and tablets, ‘stylus tip’ is the buzzword. However, as much as the younger generation gravitates towards electronic communication, the written word is enjoying a renaissance as well. As a result, a plethora of new ranges of conventional writing instruments are also being produced to appeal to this important target group, especially as they are the increasingly discerning and very savvy stationery customers of the future. Creativeworld featured many ranges of high-grade paper products, paints, coloured pencils, and decorative kits and sets, while the atmosphere throughout Christmasworld was elegantly festive as one would expect, with its many displays of gift wrap, ribbons and decorative accessories. Setting the trend at Paperworld STATIONERY MAGAZINE Upbeat mood at Spring Fair, too Despite sleet, snow, blocked roads, and rail and air cancellations, the stationery aisles at this year’s Spring Fair were buzzing with trade visitors looking for the latest product innovations. From ExaClair, classic Roses themed notebooks 11 ExaClair showed a number of ranges and designs, including Rhodia, Roses and Catitudes notebooks. The designs range from practical to classic to fun. Blueprint Collections exhibited its brand new Sanderson collection of stationery, tinware and bags. Inspired by early 19th Century Chinese Porcelain Garden, a Sanderson gem from wallpaper, the Porcelain Blueprint Collections Garden design is a Sanderson gem and has translated beautifully into this new collection. Clere Concepts, which has been distributing stationery and giftware to UK retailers for over 20 years, unveiled a number of new ranges again this year. The company says it introduces new lines and designs every six months, alongside its many long-term The unique new PENroll, launched at Spring Fair ranges. New for 2012 and launched at Spring Fair is a range of fun, colourful pens in the form of cats and dogs. Three bold, vibrant, solid colours and three pastel, soft, glitter colours are included in this funky new range. Clere Concepts also launched its Music Design Pen Sets and Keyboard Calculators. The pen sets feature smart music designs and are available as a gift-boxed double set, including ballpoint and rollerball, or as a gift-boxed single ballpoint pen. Also new are calculators with piano keyboard style buttons. British designer, Michael Ruthenbury, exhibited his new patented product, PENroll. This innovative accessory, available in a number of striking colours, wraps around a notebook and holds several pens conveniently at hand. What’s next for the stationery market? With the early spring shows over for another year, the stationery sector now turns its attention to the 2012 Stationery Show, which will take place on 24 and 25 April at London’s Business Design Centre. From what we’re hearing on the industry grapevine, there will be plenty more product, colour and innovation in store at this dynamic event, which is dedicated to all things stationery. When Campo Marzio opened its first store in London four years ago, the sophistication and sense of style that is synonymous with Italian design burst onto the UK stationery scene. Editor Marilyn Arthurs recently met with UK director, Michelle Caplan, to find out more about the company’s approach to designing stylish accessories for fashion-conscious working people. A chance visit to a stationery shop in Rome five years ago signalled a radical career change for Michelle Caplan. The shop was Campo Marzio, named after the historic Roman neighbourhood in which the store is located, and with that first visit Michelle was hooked on this upmarket brand. “I quickly realised that this was the shop in Italy for pens, stationery and accessories,” she recalls. “Everybody went there and there was nothing like it in London, so I thought I’d try to get the brand into the UK.” After many years working in London’s high end property market, Michelle contacted Campo Marzio executives in January 2008 with her UK proposal. The contract was signed in May and the first store opened in June. Michelle had become the owner of the brand for the UK and the British Isles. From Piccadilly to Regent Street That first store, a 100 square foot boutique situated in London’s fashionable Piccadilly, is chock full of Campo Marzio quality, design and colour. The impressive window display invites passing customers into what Michelle refers to as “our little Aladdin’s brand outside Italy. For future expansion, she is considering such locations as Manchester, Bath and Oxford. With Campo Marzio products now also being sold in 14 John Lewis stores, the brand has expanded beyond London’s W1 to the M25 environs. A UK warehouse is also in the pipeline. “We are currently in negotiation with more major department stores,” Michelle says. “I think there is potential for up to 60 outlets for this brand in the UK, a combination of standalone stores, in-store shops and a presence within retail stationery departments.” The Campo Marzio range Cave of stationery items.” The second store, equally luxurious, is a 400 square foot shop in nearby Regent Street. The choice of the two locations, in the heart of the capital’s upmarket shops, hotels and restaurants, provides the perfect backdrop for the Campo Marzio range. There are plenty more shops in the pipeline. Most recently, the new UK website has gone live. Michelle refers to it as “my third store” and the first for the Campo Marzio offers a veritable cornucopia of stylish yet practical stationery items and Italian leather accessories, designed to appeal to working people of all ages, whether they work from home or in a corporate environment. The range of colours on offer allows people to upgrade the look of their work space and stationery accessories with matching, coordinating or contrasting shades. The stationery range includes a vast STATIONERY MAGAZINE Retail Profile Traditional to trendy: Campo Marzio’s pen selection selection of pens, both trendy and traditional, as well as pen holders, pen and pencil cases, diaries, notebooks, notepads, desk pads and portfolios. For the work space, there are waste paper baskets, paper cutters, letter holders, photo frames, mouse pads and memocard holders. The latest fashion accessory Today’s working people on the move can choose from briefcases, credit card holders, wallets, document holders, coin holders, key holders and document travel cases, as well as backpacks, business bags, computer bags and jewellery travel cases. More personal items include calligraphy sets, jewellery boxes, cufflink cases and magazine holders. Last but by no means least, reflecting today’s high-tech world, the brand also offers laptop cases, i-Pad holders, Blackberry holders and Mac Book holders. In addition to quality and design, colour is key to Campo Marzio’s appeal, making STATIONERY MAGAZINE stationery items the latest ‘must-have’ fashion accessories. “For example,” Michelle says, “the girls in Rome use laptop holders with straps as handbags.” To follow the fashions, Campo Marzio works from a base colour palette of 10 shades, five of which change annually to keep the range trendy and up-to-date. “We seduce with colour,” says Michelle. “This year our shades are violet, brown, blue orchid, mandarin, pink poppy, iris, red, dandelium, mint green and primrose. We are seeing a big change in the attention paid to colour, with many working women matching their stationery accessories to their shoes, coats and handbags.” The gift aspect is also significant, she says, given the appealing design of Campo Marzio products and the growing brand awareness. The Campo Marzio heritage Established in Rome in the 1930s, Campo Marzio is a heritage brand with over 80 years experience catering for the ever changing world of consumer goods. Originally a pen shop, the company has gradually expanded to the full range it offers today. In the 1990s, the brand introduced a collection of bespoke accessories designed with traditional Italian craftmanship and produced from high quality materials. The brand remains in the ownership of the Di Giorgio family, with Roberto Di Giorgio being the inspiration behind the brand today. His attention to detail, says Michelle, is second to none. Having had several shops throughout Italy for many years, Campo Marzio’s international expansion is fairly recent. When the first London store opened in 2008, the UK represented the brand’s third international presence after Malta and Spain. Today, there are shops throughout the world – from Madrid to Moscow, New York to Capetown, Sydney to Singapore, Hong Kong 15 Campo Marzio: fashionable luxury comes to stationery to Abu Dhabi - over 50 locations in all. With so many shops worldwide and so many people travelling the globe these days, this proliferation of retail outlets can only further boost brand awareness and consumer demand - good news for Michelle Caplan as she builds the brand here in the UK. “It takes about a year for people to recognise the brand and the store,” she says. details that make up the Campo Marzio offer. Each item, despite its price, is boxed and tied with a co-ordinating ribbon, conveying the quality of the brand with every purchase. Items over £50 are packaged in a quality leather box for even more panache. The message conveyed by the Campo Marzio brand is clear: fashionable, quality stationery can reflect the working person’s personality - on one’s desk, at meetings and on the move. www.campomarzio.co.uk Campo Marzio, Piccadilly: stationery boutique in upmarket London UK business is good at Campo Marzio With items priced from £1 to £400, the brand offers products to appeal to every consumer budget. The average spend, Michelle says, is £50 to £60, depending on the time of year. “Christmas sales were good,” she says, “up on last year, and in this economic market, that is a real plus. Secret Santa gifts are big business for us because our packaging adds to the purchase and makes each item look more expensive.” In fact, packaging is one of the many STATIONERY MAGAZINE Stationery Show Preview 19 24 -25 APRIL 2012 BUSINESS DESIGN CENTRE I LONDON ‘Fashion meets Function’, the theme of the 2012 Stationery Show, reflects the growing popularity and emerging lifestyle status of stationery among consumers of all ages and walks of life. “Interior and fashion designers are also making their mark, turning many everyday products into aspirational fashion The only UK trade exhibition accessories. Today it’s a very different story, as Henri Davis explains. In the past, the term ‘functional No going back! stationery’ included items used in the office – everyday items that were usually available in a limited colour choice of blue, black and red only. ‘Gift stationery’ referred to the ‘nice’ things one bought for oneself or a friend – items which carried design and which were purchased for personal use and not usually used as work items. By the early 1990s, fashion colours began to appear on the more functional back-to-school items such as files, folders and notebooks. Until that time, the only visual excitement on stationery products had been on licensed ranges which tended to appeal to a younger market. Sales were strong so the teen users - and the mums who were often paying - obviously liked the fact that these new files looked bright, fun and different. As this emerging trend also made shop displays more interesting, eye-catching and inviting, retailers decided that colourful products should be available and on display all year round. Colourful desk accessories from Durable; they can make all the difference to a work space STATIONERY MAGAZINE meets function From this point on, functional stationery has never looked back. Very few consumers are ambivalent towards stationery, so gauging the fashion colours and designs that are appropriate to the target market has become an important decision for the manufacturers’ and suppliers’ product development and marketing teams. Now that we’ve reached 2012, the dominant fashion element being used on functional stationery is still colour, but often it’s much more than that. As consumers become more discerning, they are looking for unique and innovative products with added product features which make them feel they are getting really good value for money. Many Fashion really does meet function with this eye-catching Magnetic Glass Drywipe Board from Cathedral Products of the products shown at Paperworld and Spring Fair this year were good examples of this trend. The design featured here is called Swift and is one of Filofaxes new range for 2012. The colours chosen are soft and delicate and compliment the prettiness of the image. Colour - instant appeal The great thing about colour is its instant impact. It’s a great way initially to attract the attention of your target market. Once you have them interested, you can ‘hook’ them with the additional, and often more subtle, features. When using colour to attract your target market, remember that in choosing to buy a particular product consumers are making a statement about themselves. Increasingly today, stationery items are regarded as fashion accessories. This is particularly so with items people know they will be seen with, and which they will use regularly or for a long while, such as a pen, notebook, porfolio, diary or Filofax. For suppliers and retailers, the more targeted or specific the imagery appears on a product, the more you focus and potentially limit its appeal, as consumers will make an active choice as to whether they will buy it or not. This is why licensing can prove hugely successful: if you get the combination of product specification, imagery and price just right for the brand followers, you will have an instant market ready to buy the product. On the other hand, if you get any of those elements wrong, you could have a real retail disaster on your hands! Gnu notebooks: combining eyecatching colours with added features, such as ribbon markers, sections with perforated pages and expanding storage pockets Another great colour-function combo: the new uni-ball Insight, a liquid ink rollerball with a choice of ink colours, ‘ideal for school, reliable, colourful and comfortable’ Keeping it fresh and fashionable Silvine: strong colour is combined with great product features to create innovative perfect ound notebooks with soft covers and perforated pages; a versatile product that looks good, too Hello Kitty is a good example of successful licensing. The brand sanctions the launch of several distinct and different looks every season, with each new range using strong core features which loyal purchasers want and have grown to expect, combined with additional interesting points of difference which reflect the design inspiration. STATIONERY MAGAZINE Shopping Around 45 Design-led stationery is very much a fashion accessory; these diaries from GO Stationery are part of the new range for 2012 When the product carries a graphic or design, the image will often link to the function of the product, but the style of execution will usually be determined by what is on trend at that time - be it design, colour, type style, or a combination of all three. Kitchen Labels from K Two is a good example of this, with the colour palette, icon-based design and retro style all reflecting current design trends. A feast of fashion and function Kitchen Labels from K Two: colour palette, icon-based design and retro style all reflect current design trends There are plenty of great new products hitting the stationery market this year.
