Kamloops Self Advocate Group
The August 15 meeting of the Kamloops Self Advocate Group covered a lot of important topics. Self
Advocate Peer Advisor Sherry Shortman reviewed
"The Rights We Want" in book form and gave everyone their own personal copy. The group also listened
to "The Rights CD" recorded By Jim Reynolds of NL
Broadcasting for people who are visually impaired.
The group also discussed the KSCL "Plain Language
Policy", Community Living Week and the Self Advocate Summit to be held in Vernon in October. The
next meeting of the Kamloops Self Advocate Group
is Saturday September 19 from 1-3 pm at the Desert
Gardens Community Centre - 540 Seymour Street.
The agenda will include deciding on a Mission Statement for the group. All interested Self Advocates are
encouraged to attend. For more information contact
250 374 3245 or email [email protected]
Family Home Purchase
Initiative
The Kamloops Society for Community Living is
pleased to announce that we may be able to assist families to finance the purchase of homes for their family
members with disabilities. We were able to purchase
units in the Mosaic condominium development and are
offering 3 of them for sale, with an option to assist
families to finance the purchase with the Society’s support. A template to purchase with the Society holding
a 25% down payment for a agreed upon term has been
developed and will allow an housing option that might
otherwise be unattainable for the persons we support.
For details on possible ownership options please contact Gail Saunders at 250-374-3245

Business Meetings -
Peer Advisor Report
Since starting this job, I have
made a few word changes to
“The Rights We Want” and
made “The Rights We Want”
books and a picture book as well. Then I went around
to all the KSCL group homes and to see two people
that live on their own or with a roommate. I went
around to the all the day programs and the three work
places. I have been busy at my job so far, I look forward to being able to help out many other places, like
employment.
At this years Community Carnival part of the Downtown Market. The weather was nice and hot. The self
advocates helped run the shooting gallery along with
the CAP Team. By the end of the day we made
$91.03 I am here if anyone of the self advocates needs
help. You can call me at the KSCL office from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. If I am not
at the office just leave a message and I will get back to
you. I can also be reached by email at [email protected]

Community Employment Update
Hello from Community Employment! It has been a
busy spring and summer here at Community Employment, we have been busy building the initiative and
settling in to our new space at the Head Office on
Seymour Street. With the sunny weather, have come
the jobs! We have had many successes over the last
couple of months. Congratulations are in order for
the former employees of Rainbow Ribbons, Marilee
Manning and Kathrine Dominik. Marilee has accepted a delivery position with the Downtown Echo,
and Kathrine has just started a work experience position at Overland Press where she is learning to be a
shop assistant. Congratulations also going out to:
Sherry Shortman on becoming KSCL’s new peer advisor, Nigel Biro for attaining a position with A&L
Landscaping, Harry Jepson for six months on the job
with Kamloops This Week, and Thank-you Ruth Silver for helping us to connect with A&L Landscaping,
a job was created with your help!
Marilee Manning
has just joined the
staff of the Downtown Echo. She is in
charge of distributing
the paper to the
downtown area.
Nigel Biro is the
newest employee of
A&L Landscaping.
Nigel works as a
landscaper on several
commercial and residential properties
around town. His
duties include mowing and weed control.
He is also learning to spread mulch and other jobs associated with yard maintenance. “My favorite part of
the job is the variety. We are always at different locations. We do different jobs for different sites and I like
that” says Nigel. “I also like to have a job where I
work outside. It’s great to mow really green grass as
opposed to dry, brown grass, that way you can see
where you’ve been!”.
We are always on the look out for employment or work
experience opportunities. For more information, or to
share an opportunity for work or work experience, or if
you would like Community Employment to visit your
workplace to do a complimentary assessment of your
business’s needs, contact Jessica at Community Employment at 521 Seymour Street, 250-37-3245 or email
[email protected].
“The job is more than delivering the papers, I also
have to watch for businesses that are opening and
closing so they can be added or taken off the route
list” says Marilee. Marilee also keeps an eye out for
newsworthy community events. If she takes pictures
of things happening in the community, they might get
used in upcoming editions of the paper! “The best
part of the job is seeing how happy people are to get
their copies of the paper, it makes me happy when
they thank me!” says Marilee.
Things are changing on the home front for Marilee as
well. She is moving into a new home of her very own
at the Mosaic in downtown Kamloops. Marilee is
excited about living downtown because she is within
walking distance of everything!

Greystone Gab
We hope everyone is having a great summer and finding ways
to beat the heat. We are very thankful at Greystone for our
central air!
Summer appears to be disappearing so fast! That could be
due to the fact that we at Greystone have been so busy over
the past few months.
Starting in June, we had our first annual Greystone Olympics
keeping in theme with the 2010 Olympics approaching. Thanks to the Pink House for entering a couple of teams.
July was our Ocean theme. We dove into a variety of seafood dishes and seashell crafts. As well, we enjoyed a trip
to Sun Peaks and to Lac Le Jeune. It was also the beginning of Therapeutic Horse Back Riding and Music Club at
Gateway. At this point, we would like to thank Sara and her father for volunteering and donating the use of their
church. Last but not least, we enjoyed trips to the Farmer’s Market and the Downtown Business Association’s Carnival.
August has arrived and we are busy as ever. Our theme is the 60’s (Woodstock’s 40th anniversary) and we have
been tie dying and enjoying the decades inspired food items. As well, with our new community ARCH coupon
books in hand, we have been escaping the heat by diving into the Canada Games pool. If anyone would like more
information in regards to ARCH, please contact us at 250 374-1375.
In conclusion, we would like to congratulate ‘D’ on her volunteer placement at the Simply Best thrift store and
congratulations to Kristie on her volunteer job at Erwins. Keep up the good work!

very important video to our library. The Freedom
Tour is a 53 minute documentary, that records compelling stories told by survivors of institutions who are
now living in communities across the Prairies. “The

from Winnipeg to Calgary, and the quest to free (our)
people from lives of isolation, congregation and segregation in institutions. A copy of this video is available
for loan through our Resource Library at Head Office

David Ross Memorial Celebrity Game 3 pm
The feature event of Community Living Day in Kamloops has always been the Celebrity Challenge Game –
a hilarious event where local notables
come together to celebrate the spirit of
community with some good old fashioned fun.
For countless years, Western Canada
Theatre’s David Ross was always at the
very core of the event; organizing the
squads and leading the fun and frolic with his wonderfully warm personality and outrageous antics.
David was taken from us earlier this year and in order
to pay homage to his amazing spirit and invaluable
contribution to our community, the event has been
renamed the David Ross Memorial Celebrity Challenge Game. At this year’s inaugural event and those
to come, David’s wonderful spirit will live on in the
hearts and minds of all his “team mates”.
Come be a part of it, Saturday September 12 at 3 pm
on the Community Living Day Diamonds at
McArthur Island (beside Nor Brock Stadium).
The event will also feature a yummy Bake Sale and an
Activity Area for the children of players.

Intro
Welcome to the second issue of ‘Lets
Get Healthy’ newsletter.
Hope everyone is managing to stay
cool in this heat wave. I know its
difficult to get motivated to exercise
in this heat so why not try swimming.
Swimming is an excellent way to keep
cool and to burn those extra calories.
Swimming involves the use of almost
all the muscles required for
movement, without the weight of
your body pounding you with each
move like when you are walking or
running. Regular swimming will build
your muscle strength, endurance, and
cardio-vascular fitness. Leisurely
swimming can burn on average 400
calories. So take the plunge and have
fun.
