It has been a busy spring and summer here at Community Employment, we have been busy building the initiative and settling in to our new space at the Head Office on Seymour Street. With the sunny weather, have come the jobs! We have had many successes over the last couple of months. Congratulations are in order for the former employees of Rainbow Ribbons, Marilee Manning and Kathrine Dominik. Marilee has accepted a delivery position with the Downtown Echo, and Kathrine has just started a work experience position at Overland Press where she is learning to be a shop assistant. Congratulations also going out to: Sherry Shortman on becoming KSCL’s new peer advisor, Nigel Biro for attaining a position with A&L Landscaping, Harry Jepson for six months on the job with Kamloops This Week, and Thank-you Ruth Silver for helping us to connect with A&L Landscaping, a job was created with your help! Marilee Manning has just joined the staff of the Downtown Echo. She is in charge of distributing the paper to the downtown area. Nigel Biro is the newest employee of A&L Landscaping. Nigel works as a landscaper on several commercial and residential properties around town. His duties include mowing and weed control. He is also learning to spread mulch and other jobs associated with yard maintenance. “My favorite part of the job is the variety. We are always at different locations. We do different jobs for different sites and I like that” says Nigel. “I also like to have a job where I work outside. It’s great to mow really green grass as opposed to dry, brown grass, that way you can see where you’ve been!”. We are always on the look out for employment or work experience opportunities. For more information, or to share an opportunity for work or work experience, or if you would like Community Employment to visit your workplace to do a complimentary assessment of your business’s needs, contact Jessica at Community Employment at 521 Seymour Street, 250-37-3245 or email [email protected]. “The job is more than delivering the papers, I also have to watch for businesses that are opening and closing so they can be added or taken off the route list” says Marilee. Marilee also keeps an eye out for newsworthy community events. If she takes pictures of things happening in the community, they might get used in upcoming editions of the paper! “The best part of the job is seeing how happy people are to get their copies of the paper, it makes me happy when they thank me!” says Marilee. Things are changing on the home front for Marilee as well. She is moving into a new home of her very own at the Mosaic in downtown Kamloops. Marilee is excited about living downtown because she is within walking distance of everything! Kathrine Dominik and Jessica at Overland Press COMMUNITY LIVING NEWS Page 4 August 2009 Greystone Gab We hope everyone is having a great summer and finding ways to beat the heat. We are very thankful at Greystone for our central air! Summer appears to be disappearing so fast! That could be due to the fact that we at Greystone have been so busy over the past few months. Starting in June, we had our first annual Greystone Olympics keeping in theme with the 2010 Olympics approaching. Thanks to the Pink House for entering a couple of teams. July was our Ocean theme. We dove into a variety of seafood dishes and seashell crafts. As well, we enjoyed a trip to Sun Peaks and to Lac Le Jeune. It was also the beginning of Therapeutic Horse Back Riding and Music Club at Gateway. At this point, we would like to thank Sara and her father for volunteering and donating the use of their church. Last but not least, we enjoyed trips to the Farmer’s Market and the Downtown Business Association’s Carnival. August has arrived and we are busy as ever. Our theme is the 60’s (Woodstock’s 40th anniversary) and we have been tie dying and enjoying the decades inspired food items. As well, with our new community ARCH coupon books in hand, we have been escaping the heat by diving into the Canada Games pool. If anyone would like more information in regards to ARCH, please contact us at 250 374-1375. In conclusion, we would like to congratulate ‘D’ on her volunteer placement at the Simply Best thrift store and congratulations to Kristie on her volunteer job at Erwins. Keep up the good work! David was taken from us earlier this year and in order to pay homage to his amazing spirit and invaluable contribution to our community, the event has been renamed the David Ross Memorial Celebrity Challenge Game. At this year’s inaugural event and those to come, David’s wonderful spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all his “team mates”. Deb COMMUNITY LIVING NEWS August 2009 Lets Get Healthy Volume 1, Issue 2 Page 10 ∗ In this issue : 1 Intro Welcome to the second issue of ‘Lets Get Healthy’ newsletter. Hope everyone is managing to stay cool in this heat wave. I know its difficult to get motivated to exercise in this heat so why not try swimming. Swimming is an excellent way to keep cool and to burn those extra calories. Swimming involves the use of almost all the muscles required for movement, without the weight of your body pounding you with each move like when you are walking or running. Regular swimming will build your muscle strength, endurance, and cardio-vascular fitness. Leisurely swimming can burn on average 400 calories. So take the plunge and have fun.
