By BRANDON EVANS
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, 248 million turkeys
are projected to be raised in
the United States in 2011.
Many of these will meet
their end due to Thanksgiving.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that more than

45 million turkeys are cooked
and eaten just for the holiday.
That’s one-sixth of all turkeys
sold in the U.S. per year.
But at least two turkeys living in Wise County this year
will be spared the oven and
the deep fryer.
Stubs and Fuzzy will be celebrating their one-year birth-
days right about the time
Thanksgiving gets here.
The birds live on a rural
patch of property between Decatur and Greenwood. The land
features sloping hills bristling
with post oaks. They share the
space with goats and chickens
and a cadre of five guinea fowl
that scour ticks and scorpions
from the land.
The two turkeys are lucky to
be alive.
“We found the eggs after
they got crushed somewhat
by a lawnmower,” said 11year-old Michael Davis. “We
were able to save two eggs. We

their boss’ ardent support of the local economy.
“He tries to keep as much as possible local,” National Ropers Supply
(NRS) General Manager Jim Lamirand said. “We use 5P Welding north
of town for our fixtures. We do a lot
of our printing at Vic Printing.
“Our events at the arena bring in
an average of 20 families any given
weekend for clinics. Those numbers
skyrocket when it’s a roping event
or competition. He’s all about bringing people to Decatur to spend their
money at local hotels, restaurants
and shops.”
However, the area may get its biggest boost when the “little, old bowling alley goes to Vegas,” as Lamirand put it.
NRS and David’s Western Store,
headquartered in Decatur and
warehoused in the building that was
once the town’s bowling alley, will
rent out the entire 90,000-squarefoot MGM Grand convention center
in Las Vegas to set up NRS World
during the National Finals Rodeo
(NFR) in December.
“It’s such a great marketing opportunity to get our name out
there,” Lamirand said. “It will definitely put our name and the name
of Decatur on the map.”

For several years, David’s and
NRS have set up booths at various
rodeo events including the National
High School Rodeo Finals, the National Junior High Rodeo Finals,
the Texas rodeo finals and the World

“They’ve done road shows before,”
said Jesse Bolgiano, NRS business
development for NFR. “But these are

The first postmaster dates back
to Feb. 2, 1883, when Samuel C.

NEWARK • RHOME
Cities pass resolutions to
tax ‘goods-in-transit’
NEWARK
Town prepares for Santa,
Christmas bazaar Dec. 3
By BRANDON EVANS
By BRANDON EVANS
In the past two weeks,
both Rhome and Newark
have passed resolutions
that will allow them to
tax certain types of stored
property, also known as
“goods-in-transit.”
“If someone has a warehouse here that stores, say
computers, here for a while
before they are shipped
somewhere else to be sold,
then that can be taxed,”
said city attorney Walt
Leonard. “The state legislature has given us a window here, and we have to
act by Dec. 31.”
“Goods-in-transit,”
as
defined by Senate Bill 1,
is “tangible personal prop-
erty that is acquired in or
imported into this state to
be forwarded to another location in this state or outside this state.”
The property also has to
be stored on the site for no
more than 175 days to be
taxed.
However, certain items,
such as oil, natural gas, petroleum products, aircraft
and an automobile dealer’s
inventory, are exempted.
Rhome City Council
passed
the
resolution
unanimously on Nov. 10.
Newark passed it exactly
one week later.
Passage of the resolution
did not create the tax, it
only allows those cities to
implement one in the fu-
ture if they so decide.
“That’s why I like this,”
said Newark councilman
Doug Anderson. “It gives
us the power to say yes or
no.
“You could also exempt
someone if you wanted to
or negotiate if a new business comes into town.”
But Newark councilman
Bob Wells disagreed with
the tax and voted against
it.
“This hurts the business
guy,” Wells said. “Why punish someone if they want to
come here? We’d be fortunate to get them here. Why
do this?”

He’s making a list. He’s
checking it twice. And he’s
going to be at Newark’s Delora Doughty Royal Park
on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Santa Claus will be on
hand during Newark’s
“Santa in the Park and
Christmas Bazaar.”
The event will run from
4 to 9 p.m. in the park. It
is being organized by the
Newark Volunteer Ladies
Auxiliary as a fundraiser
to aid the Newark Volunteer Fire Department.
Organizer Angela Braun
said they added a bazaar
this year.
“We’ve already got 12
booths so far for our bazaar,” she said.
Santa will be available
to take photos.
On Thursday night, she
asked the city council to
sponsor the event and for
permission to decorate the
park for the event and to
keep the Christmas decorations up for the entire
month.
After Braun ensured
that the ladies auxiliary
would maintain the decorations, the council voted
4-0 in support.
“I would also like to
thank you for your support for the Cruisin’ Days
event,” Braun told the
council. “It was a big success.”

Rotary Club replaces tables at Black Creek Lake
The picnic area at Black
Creek Lake on the LBJ National Grasslands got a little
makeover last weekend,
thanks to a group of local
volunteers.
Ten members of the Decatur Rotary Club, and one
spouse, spent most of the
day Saturday replacing and
improving picnic tables and
a bench. Dilapidated wood
was replaced on seven tables
and the bench with new,
weather-sealed wood. Each
tabletop was also extended
by 2 feet to make them ADA
compliant.
“The National Grasslands
are such a treasure, and the
Decatur Rotary Club is proud
to do our part in taking care
of this incredible asset,” club
President Cary Bohn said.
Lowe’s in Decatur donated
the materials, including the
wood, bolts, screws and drill
bits. Chili’s in Decatur do-
nated hamburgers to feed
the workers.
The improvements are the
first of a three-phase plan
for the recreation area at the
lake. Future projects will include planting trees, repairing fire pits and making the
new bathrooms ADA accessible.
The club is quite familiar
with Black Creek Lake. Each
June, the Decatur Rotary
Club, along with the U.S. Forest Service, hosts the Kids
Fishing Derby, a catch-andrelease event where prizes
are awarded in different categories such as largest fish,
smallest fish and most fish
caught.
For more information on
upcoming improvement projects, the fishing derby or on
joining the club, email Bohn
at

OUR VIEWS
Path to
recovery starts
by shopping
local
Be thankful for service, stories of our veterans
For three years the nation has been mired in an
economic slump the likes of which have not been
seen since the Great Depression. Though some
positive signs exist, the fact is many businesses
are still reluctant to ramp back up to full steam,
and many consumers remain wary.
Citizens also feel quite helpless, thinking it’s
the government and Wall Street that are to blame,
and that also hold the keys to recovery.
Occupy Wall Street has been one obvious way
some have tried to take a stand.
There is something you can do, to make an impact locally.
And it’s as simple as this: Look Local First.
When it comes time to spend, whether it’s everyday household items and groceries, necessities
such as clothing, larger purchases like furniture
and appliances, or products and services for a
business, organization or government entity, you
can make a difference.
From apples and asset management to zippers
and service with zest, give local merchants first
shot at your business.
We may not be able to do anything about the
national or global economies, but we can make a
significant difference in our own back yard.
By looking locally, you help create jobs here at
home. You help sustain those businesses that support the community, through their donations and
volunteerism. You help build the tax base, which
keeps your taxes lower while paying for needed
services. You help expand the products and services available here.
You help the environment by using less fossil fuels driving to areas outside the county. You lessen
traffic congestion. You help to create and sustain
an atmosphere of mutual cooperation.
For the past six months, business development
organizations in our community, such as chambers
of commerce, economic development corporations
and Main Street programs, have partnered to
bring about an awareness of the benefits of shopping at home.
In much the same way that the holidays challenge us when it comes to healthy eating, the holiday shopping season is prime time when it comes
to testing our buying habits.
Do yourself a favor. Avoid the stress, the hassle
and the wasted time and miles.
Look Local First. Think of it as Occupy Wise
County.
You’ll be glad you did, and your community will
benefit.

District should focus on
teaching, not test
To parents of students in Decatur Independent School
District:
I am curious. Am I the only person concerned about
the amount of focus this district has placed on the
STAAR test and implementation of the concept-driven
CSCOPE curriculum?
If the state of Texas requires each district to follow the
TEKS, then why has so much money and emphasis been
placed on extra programs like CSCOPE when every
teacher that teaches has a college degree that prepared
them to teach a specific subject?
I hope it’s not because of this new mandated test. I,
for one, know that the value of my son’s education far
outweighs teaching and drilling a student for the sole
purpose of passing a test.
It seems as though with so many “free” supplemental
teaching materials available statewide that there would
not be a demand for all these “optional” programs such
as CSCOPE to be purchased by our district. I want to
know the exact dollar amount spent on all of these “optional” programs purchased within the last five years.
If our principals and teachers “truly” have the freedom
to use supplemental materials, then why is CSCOPE
the primary test being administered at the elementary
and high school level?
As a certified teacher and parent, I feel that teachers
should be allowed to utilize their training and expertise
to do the job they are more than qualified to do.
Doesn’t it make more sense to emphasize teaching
the “basics” and develop stronger, more confident learners than to drill the students on curriculum that is not
developmentally appropriate and full of mistakes?
Parents, how many more great students and teachers
will this district have to lose before we take a stand and
demand change?
Marsha Hudson Hafer
Decatur
Messenger should look
on the bright side
It is very difficult for me to buy the Wise County Messenger when the majority of the time the headlines are
all negative stories, and there are pictures of individuals who are in trouble with the law, pictures of wrecks
and indictments of cases in our county.
It’s very disturbing to see pictures of accidents that
have occurred, from minor injuries to, in some cases,
death. Do those victims want their picture in the paper
in the situation they are in? Probably not.
I understand there are records that are available to
the public, but does that individual want their name in
the newspaper with their business for everyone to read?
To my knowledge, most of the individuals would rather
not have their information printed in the local newspaper.
Who wants to know about divorces, marriages, indictments, wrecks and ridiculous crime reports? Does the
Wise County Messenger not have anything better to do?
How about writing about positive things in our community?
Why give our community a criminal or violent view
with all the negative write-ups? Or be more respectful
to individuals with their circumstances.
Congrats on all the awards and ratings, but please
have a heart and think of your community. Some of
these individuals have kids, grandkids, parents, etc.,
who would rather not have their personal information
publicized to the county.
Please consider the world we are living in and the
hatred that we hear about in the Metroplex area. Let’s
not make our county one with a lot of violence because
of all the write-ups and information our local newspaper
is printing.
Be considerate of others.

no time for consideration
We will not get to listen to the Newark City Council
members tonight (Nov. 17) express what they have in
mind for the citizens of Newark while deciding how to
apply “Eminent Domain Authority.”
This is a general law municipality with around a 1,000
(estimated) population. What is the plan of this administration to throw themselves into now?
A huge development is waiting in the wings to jump in
and suddenly “take over” our rural town?
Also on the agenda is a resolution to be able to tax
“goods-in-transit.” Is that same development planning
on a warehouse, too? Why do we never know about these
plans until this city council is prepared to do a final
vote?
Notice the public hearing to discuss is on the same
agenda as the final vote. That gives everyone lots of time
to prepare questions and be able to grasp the big picture.

NORTHWEST
School prepares for more
budget crunches, joins lawsuit
By ERIKA PEDROZA
After cutting back to
one meeting instead of two
this month, the Northwest
School Board faced a lengthy
agenda last week.
The majority of it dealt
with planning for upcoming
school years.
Budget planning
Although just a few
months into this year and its
budget, Northwest officials
are preparing the financial
plan for the next few school
years.
Anticipating similar, if
not worse, cutbacks, the
board was presented a budget schedule similar to this
year’s planning process
— complete with public finance forums, frequent updates and workshops.
The seven steps in the
budget
process
include
planning (determining the
community’s priorities and
efficiency) in January and
February, preparation (including meetings with principals and program managers) in February, board
review from March to May,
budget adoption in June,
tax rate adoption in July
and August, amendments in
July and June and the submission of audited financial
statements in November.
“It just never seems to
end,” Chief Financial Officer Jon Graswich said. “This
preparation, though, will
help.”
After cutting $8.2 million
this year through staff repositioning, two-mile transportation restrictions and
facility operations and program reductions, the district
anticipates losing another
$12.8 million during the
2013 fiscal year.
“Problems will arise undoubtedly,” Graswich said.
“Public school finance will
change ... Essentially, they’re
continuing the same pattern
of increasing the rigor and
the standards while being on
the short end of the stick for
the financing of the increasing rigor and standards. You
wouldn’t be surprised if the
response at this point in
time was litigation.”
Financing lawsuit
The board unanimously
approved a resolution prosecuting a lawsuit against the
financing public education
statutory system for “impairing the education available to students and the
district’s ability to provide
an appropriate education”
through the Texas School
Coalition
“There are three major
groups out there,” Graswich
said. “One is the equity center ... There is a middle of the
road group which is going
to try to straddle all ideas
by David Thompson, and
there’s the group that we’re
most closely associated to,
the Texas School Coalition.”
David Thompson, a lawyer
based out of Houston, serves
as legislative counsel for the
Texas Association of School
Administrators, Fast Growth
School Coalition, Houston
Independent School District
and has been involved in
legislative activity affecting
public education for more
than 20 years.
The coalition hired Haynes
and Boone to represent its
interests.
“Our claims will center
around adequacy, asserting
that districts lack sufficient
funding under the current
system to provide our students a constitutionally adequate education,” Graswich
said of the district’s involvement in litigation.
Other claims in the lawsuit include a state property
tax, efficiency and equity
claim.
The state property tax
claim asserts that districts
lack meaningful discretion
in setting their local maintenance and operations tax
rate becoming a de facto
state property tax, which is
prohibited under the Texas
Constitution.
The efficiency claim argues that the current method of allocating state funds
among districts is arbitrary
and that “districts should
be funded based on a new,
unified set of formulas that
more accurately reflect differences in costs based on
student populations and district characteristics.”
The equity claim asserts
that the current school
funding system is “uncon-
OUR VIEWS
stitutionally inequitable because property-poor school
districts don’t have equal
access to similar revenues
per pupil at similar levels of
tax effort in comparison to
Chapter 41 districts or other
districts funded under the
target revenue system.”
“We will assert an adequacy claim and state property tax claim,” Graswich
said, “but not an efficiency
or equity claim. Successful
prosecution of the adequacy and state property tax
claims would help assure
that all school districts are
adequately funded and that
districts have available significant additional taxing
capacity to provide enrichment programming desired
by their constituents on a
local basis.
“The efficiency and equity claims, standing alone,
implicate the manner in
which funds are distributed,
rather than the overall level
of funding in the system.
(They) have the potential to
favor some districts and disfavor others,” Graswich continued. “Our intended approach is based on the belief
that the best strategy is one
that focuses on the state’s
overall level of funding for
schools.”
Superintendent
Karen
Rue added: “The next era
of school finance funding in
the state of Texas will evolve
through lawsuits ... The role
we have to play as a district
in that and the results we
all will have in state funding
because of that lawsuit will
be drivers for us for a decade
or more to come.”

“Except those people up
in Japan didn’t have as
much (service) time as we
had in Okinawa.
“They had a deal down at
the theater for Eisenhower,
and everybody booed him,
and he left.”
Mayme Fletcher, wife of
Kyle “Tooter” Fletcher of
Slidell since 1942, told me
about a different night at
the theater.
“He (Kyle Fletcher) was
born and raised in Slidell,
and I was born and raised
in Decatur. I didn’t even
know Slidell was on the
map,” she said.
The first discovery of
Slidell came through some
coworkers at Pinkerton
Candy, who were from the
small community. One of
them arranged a blind date
with Fletcher.
“We went to eat and a
picture show,” she said.
“You could go eat a 25-cent
sandwich that had everything on it and get a Coke
for a nickel. You could go
to the Majestic Theater,
which was on the west side
of the square in Decatur,
for a quarter, 10 cents for a
Western.”
Kyle Fletcher, 90, sailed
on the Queen Mary to
France, then battled his
way through Germany the
final year of the war. He
was part of the occupation
force in Europe in 1946.
“I wasn’t scared ’til the
last, when it was getting close to time to come
home,” he said. “I was one
of the lucky ones that made
it.”
He returned to Slidell
and opened a feed mill
there. He ran it until he
was 85 when a 2006 heart
attack caused him to slow
down. He and Mayme still
live on the farm in Slidell.
These are people in our
daily lives we owe unending thanks.

PACKING A LOAD — Employees load three of 30 semis that will transport all of the merchandise and equipment needed for NRS World Dec. 4-10 at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Decatur-based
companies National Ropers Supply (NRS) and David’s Western Store rented the entire 90,000-square-foot convention center to set up a unique trade show during the National Finals Rodeo.

just booths at a show versus
putting on your own show.
This is huge for them.”
In addition to the caliber
of involvement, the setup of
the show differs from those
in which they have participated.
The 45 vendor booths will
offer customers an interactive shopping experience
through a saddle shop, roping seminars, an arena and
displays of horse trailers,
living quarters and SportChassis trucks.
“We are the antithesis of a
normal trade show,” Bolgiano said. “The vision was to
create an interactive shopping experience. It’s not just
shopping, but our customers
will have the opportunity to
learn from vendor reps — the
history of the company, the
history of the product, the
way it works. They’ll have
the opportunity to learn
from clinician, Krece Harris,
in a seminar and have a saddle customized in our saddle
shop. It’s a two-fold event.
“The setup will be more of
a mass merchandise store.
Instead of people paying
at each booth, we’ll have
19 registers at the front,”
he continued. “We’ll have
daily giveaways — hats,
CDs, jeans. Each vendor is
sponsoring a day. We’ll also
have entertainers every
day — bands playing and
the cowboys on site signing
autographs. And unlike the
other shows, we’ll be open
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All the
other shows don’t open until 10 a.m., so we’ll have an

Because of a prior booking,
NRS World will not be set up
the entire length of the NFR,
which begins Dec. 1.
Forty-five local employees
will be joined by another 50
workers in Vegas to help assemble the store the evening
of Dec. 2, preparing to open
on the 4th.
“There is some kind of
education seminar before us
which ends Dec. 2,” Lamirand said. “They are to move
out by noon that day, and we
should be able to start moving in around 6 p.m. We’ll be
setting up in about 24 hours.
It will be mass chaos.”
Breakdown begins after
the store closes on Dec. 10.
“Six days of mass chaos,”
Lamirand said. “Six days of
a great opportunity.”
Planning, partnering
and making it happen
The planning of the endeavor began in March and
included establishing a partnership with MGM and several vendors.
“The MGM has gone
huge with the Gold Buckle
Zone,” Bolgiano said. “They
pride themselves in being
the home of the champions
Trevor Brazile and the Coopers, and they want to become the home of the NFR,
the epicenter of the NFR. To
do so, they were looking for a
daytime activity.”
NRS/David’s management
latched onto the opportunity
to set up a unique, daytime
trade show.
To capture authenticity,
organizers have implemented several unique features
to the show.
“It feels like you a lose a
little of the western heritage (in Vegas),” Lamirand
said. “That’s set the foundation of this whole thing — to
take Texas to the NFR. We
want it to be more of an experience than that of a trade
show. With the saddle shop,
you have true Texas at its
best.
“We will take 45 people
from here, mostly from Decatur,” he continued. “We
could’ve taken shortcuts to
hire people in Vegas, but this
helps preserve that Western
heritage.”
For several weeks, em-
ployees have loaded the
more than 25 semis that
will transport all of the necessary merchandise and
equipment.
“We’ll have trucks rolling
Friday and Saturday, after
Thanksgiving,”
Bolgiano
said. “People fly out the following Monday, but the majority will fly out Friday, Dec.
2. It is exciting.
“David has been fully behind this entire endeavor.
He gave the nod of approval
and the money to back it up.
It’s a huge opportunity for a
small town business to get
their name and the city’s
name on the map to bring
more to Decatur.”

Unbroken faith...

ing to see the powerful God
we serve.”
On Friday, Mahon went
into surgery. For nine hours,
the family did not see Blake
as doctors inserted two rods
in his back and took a bone
from his hip to replace the
crushed disc.
During the surgery, Mrs.
Mahon said the family was
at peace.
Just four days after his
surgery, Mahon was headed
home amazingly. But there
was a lot of hard work ahead
of him.
Three weeks after his
surgery, he started rehab in
Decatur at Fit-N-Wise with
Sports Medicine coordinator
and physical therapist Brett
Braziel.
“I’ve been treating sports
injuries for 15 years. This
was one of top three or four
sport-related injuries I’ve
seen,” Braziel said. “It was a
nasty injury.”
Mahon quickly expressed
his goal of getting back on
the basketball court for the
season opener to Braziel,
who told him it was possible,
but he needed to have the
right mindset mentally and
spiritually.
“I don’t limit anybody and
their progress and goals,”
Braziel said, “if they want to
work hard and have the faith
to get there. You can’t put
boundaries around people,
especially if they are moti-

vated.
“He had faith from the
get-go and worked as hard
as any kid. He fought hard
through the good and bad
days and had a great attitude. It helped he had a lot of
people praying for him.”
After starting with a lot of
stretches and massages to
loosen up soft tissue, Mahon
progressed to light exercise
to regain strength in his legs
and core. Within weeks, Braziel said Mahon was on the
bike and running on the el-
liptical. Throughout therapy,
he kept progressing quickly.
“He’s a strong kid and was
very determined,” Braziel
said. “By the time he was
finished, he was doing 3- to
4-foot box jumps, single leg
hops and leg presses.
“There were tough times
and days he didn’t feel like
working out, but he kept
going. He’s a pretty inspirational kid.”
Mahon gives Braziel and
his staff a lot of credit for
helping him get back this
fall.
“The therapists were all
great,” he said. “No one ever
spoke negatively. They all
said, if I want to play basketball, they are there to help.”
While healing, Mahon
grew an additional inch-anda-half and put on 30 pounds
to reach 6-6 and 195.
On Sept. 17, Mahon received his release from the
doctors to fully return to
practice, just more than
six months after the injury.
Even before his release, he
was back in the gym pushing
himself as much as he can.
As the Bulls start the season, Bridgeport coach Brian
Miller, who suffered a back
injury in college, is amazed
how far Mahon has come.
“He’s exceeded all my expectations physically,” Miller
said. “He’s a great kid with
a great attitude. He’s really
improved over the fall. Before and after school, he’d be
in here shooting around even
when he wasn’t cleared. It’s
paid off. You can’t tell that
he’s even had the injury.”
Mahon sees the past eight
months as an amazing journey that has only made him
stronger, and he was ready
for the next step Tuesday of
returning to action with no
limits.
“It’s had its hard parts,
but I had my family and the
strength from God every day
to push through it,” Mahon
said.

Slidell puts game away with 25-9 run
By RICHARD GREENE
After struggling to find
the mark in the first half
Monday, the Slidell Greyhounds honed in on the
basket in the third quarter, hitting nine of their
16 attempts.
The Greyhounds’ hot
shooting touch in the
third quarter paved the
way for a 58-39 win over
Era in their home opener.
“The shots didn’t fall at
all in the first half,” said
Slidell guard Tyler Maynard. “We were just anxious being the first home
game. The third quarter
we moved the ball better
and got the ball into the
paint instead of taking
every three-pointer.”
The victory moved the
Greyhounds to 4-1 on the
season.
Leading by one at halftime, Slidell went on a 259 run in the third frame.
Maynard poured in 12 of
his 18 points in the third.
He made back-to-back layups to put Slidell up 2421 early in the quarter.

4:25 in the frame gave the
Greyhounds a 30-24 lead.
Maynard expanded the
lead to 10, 34-24, hitting
two of three free throws.
Maynard, who was 1for-9 from the field in the
first half, hit all four of
his attempts in the third
quarter.
“He hit some big shots,”
said Slidell coach Todd
McCormick. “He’s one of
those guys that you want
to keep shooting. Some of
those shots he missed in
the first half were good
shots.”
Scott Bingham hit one
of his three three-pointers at the buzzer in the
third to give Slidell a 4528 lead.
The Greyhounds continued to pull away in the
final frame, taking a 22point lead, 56-34, on Bing-
ham’s final three-pointer
with 2:10 left. Bingham
scored 11 off the bench.
“Scott hit some big
shots,” McCormick said.
“He can do that. That’s
one thing he’s really improved on.”
Trent Garrett also finished with 11 to go along
with six rebounds for the
Greyhounds, while battling inside against Era
forwards Avery Fortenberry
and
Madison
Pearce. Daniel McCasland
led Slidell in rebounding
with seven and scored
seven points.
Fortenberry posted a
double-double of 12 points
and 16 rebounds. He had
10 boards on the offensive
end.
Era
outrebounded
Slidell 45-38.
The Greyhounds made
up for their shortfalls on
the boards with their defense. Slidell forced 27
turnovers, including eight
in the third quarter.

BACK TO COURT — Seven months after breaking his back in two places, Bridgeport’s Blake Mahon is back on the floor and is ready to start his sophomore season for the
Unbroken faith
Eight months after breaking back, Mahon returns to court
By RICHARD GREENE
The day before the Bridgeport
Bulls’ tip off the season, Kelley
Mahon sits in the front row of
seats in the gym as her son Blake
runs lines a few feet away at the
end of practice Monday.
“We’ve seen God’s work every
day,” Mrs. Mahon said. “Looking
back six months to today, it’s an
absolute blessing.”
After a freak accident that left
Mahon with a back broken in two
places in April, Mahon was prepared to be in the Bulls’ starting
lineup at forward Tuesday when
Bridgeport took on Millsap, two
days before Thanksgiving.
It’s a day that the 6-6 sophomore never doubted would
come.
“I’m blessed to be out here,
and I can’t wait to begin,” Mahon
said.
“Even after I broke my back
and was in the hospital, I never
had any doubts that I’d be back
in time for basketball.”
Mahon broke into the Bulls’
varsity rotation as a freshman
last winter, scoring 4.9 points
per game and pulling down four
rebounds, pointing to a bright future on the court.
That bright future took what
appeared to be a dark turn on
April 6 at the family’s home near
Cottondale. Just before 9 p.m.
and time to put the horses up for
the evening, Mahon was thrown
from his horse.
“He knew his back was broken immediately,” Mrs. Mahon
recalls.
Mahon was flown from the

Worth.
Even with the full extent of
his injuries known, Blake’s own
words helped the family find
peace during this trying time.
“He looked at my husband
[Cody] and said, ‘Don’t worry.
God has this.’” Mrs. Mahon re-
calls. “At 15, to say that and to
have that perspective is amazing.”
Around 2:30 a.m., along with
suffering a broken vertebra and
crushed disc, the family found
out his lung was punctured.
“This is something we’ve never
experienced, but we knew we
had to rely on our strong faith,”
Mrs. Mahon said. “We began to
pray.”
The first of many of the Mahons’ prayers were answered.
The x-rays showed Mahon’s spinal cord was perfectly intact and
undamaged.
“He had perfect movement in
all of his limbs,” Mrs. Mahon said.
“The spinal cord was pinched,
but there was no fraying to it.
Pointing to the x-ray that she
still has on her iPhone, Mrs. Mahon added: “When you see this,
you know who is in control.”
Mahon himself added: “It let
me know God’s there to protect
me, and that He’s with me with
healing hands guarding over
me.”
The answered prayers and
blessings were only beginning,
according to the Mahons. Within
24 hours of arriving at the hospital, his lung had healed itself,
meaning the surgeons could concentrate on his back and not a
more serious health concern.
Originally, he was scheduled
for surgery on Thursday, but it
was pushed back a day so the
surgeon could operate on an injured 9-year-old girl. That night,
friends and family surrounded
Blake saying prayers together
and listening to music.
“It was the most amazing
night,” Mrs. Mahon said. “It’s
hard to see your child go through
that, but it’s been a huge blessContinued on page 11

As a general matter, pregnant women are advised to avoid
taking medication. This recommendation applies to over-the-counter
drugs as well as prescription medications, all of which should be
discussed with an obstetrician. While this may seem to be an overly
cautious approach, it has been found that medications as seemingly
innocuous as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be
harmful. In fact, when taken early in pregnancy, common drugs such
as ibuprofen, naproxen, and the arthritis drug celecoxib may increase
the risk of miscarriage. This may be due to the fact that uterine levels
of hormone-like substances known as “prostaglandins” decrease during
early pregnancy, and NSAIDs, which are known to affect prostaglandin
production, may interfere with normal prostaglandin changes.

Family ornaments help Joe and Beth Johnston celebrate the holidays in their traditional
home. Ornaments collected throughout the
years, some made by children and others bought
on trips and vacations, adorn their tree.
The living and breakfast areas are joined together by large windows that show a view of the
saltwater pool, designed by Beth, and a custom
fountain.
Raylon Construction built the 3,300-squarefoot home in 2008. It is for sale. It features four
bedrooms, three and one-half bathrooms, an office, media/storage room and a bonus room upstairs.
The family has lived in the house for three

“Needed to get back to my life”
G
eorge Heaton has had his fair share
of health concerns in the last year. In
fact, George has been in the hospital
twice during that period. Each time after
George’s hospitalization, he needed therapy
and nursing care to get him where he needed
to be in order to go home to be with his
beautiful wife of 65 years.
His first visit came after a battle with gout
that left him bedfast; George had to endure
treatments from the nursing staff, as well
as working with the therapy staff at Senior
Care in Bridgeport to get him back on
his feet (literally). Senior Care’s Therapy
Department was able to utilize e-stim
through Accelerate Care Plus (ACP) in order
to re-educate George’s muscle, allowing
him to once again be able to walk. William
Leonard, Senior Care’s Rehab Team Lead
in Bridgeport, stated, “George was one of
the hardest working patients I have ever
had.” George proudly declared, “It’s a
wonderful place, everyone treated me very well.” Then in August, George
found himself back in the hospital, with pneumonia this time; on this go ‘round
George decided to admit to the Senior Care in Decatur. After 14 days, he was back
on his feet and ready to go back home to Alvord. George states with a little laugh, “I
came in on a stretcher both times but I was able to WALK out of the facility.”
