PAINTING WITH PASTELS
submitted by Jo Hadfield
“I was never interested in
working with pastels until I
had the good fortune to take a
week long workshop in Charlotte, North Carolina. My artist sister lived there and it was a
lovely way to visit while being productive. The course was led
by a truly gifted and inspirational man, Greg Biolchini (www.biolchini.com). I have been excited to use pastels ever since.
The thing that I like best is that one gets to use a paint brush. The
pigment of the pastel stick is mixed with rubbing alcohol and
water. It becomes an exercise in painting rather than drawing
and smudging. In fact, there is no need to smudge at all. The
pigment is applied using the pastel stick and then a wide brush
dipped in alcohol/water spreads the pigment into amazing
washes. The whites and lights go in last which is such a relief
after painting in watercolour. Washes can be done in acrylic or
watercolour for different effects. The alcohol speeds the drying
and the ratio of alcohol to water is truly a personal choice. I like
to use half and half.
The other exciting property of pigment and alcohol painting is
that colour can be lifted off! That happens just by using a clean
(thirsty) brush. The luminosity of using pure pigment is exciting and it will never fade.
There are some drawbacks in
that really good and reasonably
priced soft pastel sticks are hard
to find and one must use acid
free, museum quality sanded
paper, also rare. I use a French
one called “Clair Fontaine”
found at Artworld in Victoria. Another good one is a Wallis
paper but it is only available in the U.S. If anyone should hear
of any other sources, please let me know. I have also learned
how to prepare my own surface and it works great. As I have a
small picture framing business, I have lots of good quality matboards available. These I paint with gesso mixed with pumice.
It is less expensive and one can choose sizes and roughness of
surface. The beauty of the special paper or boards is that the
tooth will hold many layers of pastel.
For me, this medium is ideal for painting outside as the pastel
dust can fly all over and it doesn’t matter. When I set up outside
in the summer I am in a state of bliss especially if the painting
is going well and I am not thinking about the weeds in my garden. I am looking forward to experimentation with this glorious
medium and I hope to inspire a few readers to try painting this
way with pastels.”

PAINTINGS - OIL, INK,
MIXED MEDIUM
Susan Bibbs is a contemporary Vancouver Island artist dedicated to oil painting, multi-medium drawing and the study of
art history.
While using abstraction as an underpinning of her oil painting
process, Susan is dedicated to environmental sensibilities in her
work. This combination, the abstract process with a strong conceptualization, gives her work both depth and approachability.
Susan has been the owner of Rightside Studio since 2007. Her
oil paintings have been displayed continuously for 5 years in
downtown Nanaimo through Bastion Galleries, and for 2 years
in the heart of Sooke by BandK Jewelry and Gifts.
With a long standing interest between creativity and healing,
Susan raised her children while working as a family practice
nurse in Nanaimo BC. Susan has recently returned to studies in
Visual Arts at the Vancouver Island University.

Plein Air to
A
ll my painting life, abstraction
has been an essential component
to art-making. Like prose to poetry, representation to abstraction is a
bridge from which the telling of a story
becomes something that invites participation, to be felt and understood in a new
visual language. As the child of a Canadian landscape painter, I found it wasn't
hard to take the leap from location
sketches and plein air encounters to the
internalizing of the experience of nature
and the landscape. I made an effort to
communicate this in some kind of code
of the spirit. In painting, plein air work is
a springboard, and supplies a lifelong
supply of subject matter, design, and
essence.
For the past many years, my dad and I
took painting trips into the Canadian
Rockies. We followed the masters who
came before us, like American portraitist
John Singer Sargent and J.E.H MacDonald, founding member of the Canadian
Group of Seven. For seven autumns between 1924 an 1930, MacDonald made
small oil panels on location at Lake
O’Hara, in Yoho National Park. With
vigorous brushwork and intuitive colour,
ABSTRACTION

Exclusive
he achieved fresh, intense, and immediate interpretations of the environment.
Glacial swoops, snowmelt patches, moving, inclement skies, light flakes, jutting
peaks and rocky outcrops leap from
MacDonald’s panels in economical, virtuosic strokes. Nothing is unessential
here. Zones of colour -- tertiary greys
mingling with violet alpenglow scumbles, green gold lichen built from worndown hog hair brights creep across the
painted permafrost. What can be seen is
the authentic and unmistakable understanding of design. You can feel the rock
he’s set upon and the icy wind blowing
up from the valley. What’s created is the
revolutionizing of painterly conventions
in this timeless endeavour. Abstraction is
born in these moments. Our natural
world and our imaginations provide
these gifts. MacDonald is with me when I’m in the
field -- a private, personal event. Deeper
concepts are discovered outdoors, while
swatting at mosquitoes or blowing on
numb fingertips. A eureka moment
comes when the mind is set to work at
modern survival, balancing on a pointed
rock. Illumination is brought back to the
studio for radicalizing. By the time an
idea reaches its apex –- a large-scale
colourfield, or a soft-edge graphic in oil
-- a field sketch exists as a record of a
journey taken, a pattern, a truth -- in nature -- encountered. A few years ago I swapped my New
York studio with an American writer living in Lucca, Italy, where an ancient
Roman wall circles the city in a pink
oval crowned with Plane trees. A bicycle
can be ridden along the top of this wall
where you can observe the late light and
sinking sun, along with the shadows in
every configuration and in counterpoint
with the tree stands and sky pockets. To
paint this sensation in its completeness
poses a challenge and a thrill. I have to
ask myself how to embody the feeling of
circling the ellipse, and I marvel at the
greater miracle of being there in the first
place. J.E.H MacDonald never made it back to
Yoho after 1930. His health deteriorated
and he died two years later. To him, the
environment was a source of poetry -- inhaled as a force of wonder. I will not return to the mountains with my dad, who
passed away on May 27th of this year -my 42nd birthday. Instead, I’ll take with
me the master class of my life with him
-- and his ever-empowering nudges -- in
the direction of a personal vision abstracted from an environment he loved. ~ Sara Genn, New York City, 2014 Sara Genn is a Canadian artist living in New York City. She is the daughter of Canadian master Robert Genn.

Barkerville
Gold
by Nana Cook
undreds of kilometres from home, sitting atop a stagecoach as it lurched and swayed along the dusty streets
of a Cariboo Gold Rush town — inspiration struck!
Two months later I returned to Barkerville, B.C., as Theatre
Royal’s first artist in residence. Over the next ten days I explored the historic mountain town, sketched, photographed,
wrote endless notes, watched countless performances at
Theatre Royal, and got to know some of the folks who make
Barkerville come alive. My intent was to focus primarily on the
town’s beguiling old buildings but more and more I found myself drawn to the dedicated, knowledgeable and talented folks
who arrive after each spring thaw, bringing the town to life, before disappearing once more when the autumn snows return.
In the ten months following my artist in residence position with
Theatre Royal my sketches became paintings which in turn became an exhibit titled, “Barkerville Gold”. I took the exhibit
north — up the Cariboo Wagon Road. It opened June 20th (until
September 28th) at The Singing Camel Gallery (known locally

down the road from Barkerville
in the mining town of Wells. I
chose to keep the collection intact
and offered for sale giclée reproductions of the paintings, with all
proceeds from the sales going to
Theatre Royal and Barkerville.
During the first four weeks of the
exhibit I spent my days rediscovering Barkerville and soon realized that my exhibit was not
complete. I had not painted all of
the buildings I originally intended to paint, or the carriages,
water wheel or hillsides, nor the
lovely folks who work in the
shops, restaurants and bakery and
who welcomed me into their
unique world. And there were the
new characters on the streets of
town — even Billy Barker.
Inspiration continues to strike!

“
Patt Scrivener, AFCA - mixed media artist
The desire to create has always been my passion. I am fascinated by form, color and texture. I work experimentally and
intuitively allowing my emotional responses to guide me. My hope is to
make a connection with the viewer and cause them to experience some
of the excitement and pleasure that I have enjoyed creating the piece.
Patt Scrivener, AFCA was born
and raised in Saskatchewan and found
her passion for art and design early on.
Over the years she had several businesses in floral design and interior decorating in both Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In 2008 Patt and her husband Rick
moved to Vancouver Island where she
jumped into the art scene. She has won
numerous awards, been accepted to the
Sooke Fine Art show several years in a
row and recently was awarded signature
12
status with the Federation of Canadian
Artists. Patt also runs regular workshops
out of her studio/gallery in Parksville.
Q: When did you first become interested
in mixed media as an art form?
I tried many mediums before I decided
on painting. Sometimes you have to
know what you don’t like in order to discover what you do like! I came to mixed
media after pottery, jewellery making,
silk painting, linocut, monoprint, watercolour and weaving.
ISLAND ARTS Magazine
With a background in floral and interior
design I have a love for tactile surfaces,
texture and colour. In 2005 I took a week
long mixed media workshop with experimental artist Maxine Masterfield which
was the catalyst for my decision to focus
my creativity on painting. I believe my
past experiences are woven into my
mixed media work. My love of colour
and texture comes from all the years I
have worked with fabric and flowers and
this comes through in my work.
Q: How do you start a painting?
I paint intuitively so I do not start with
any idea in mind. My imagery comes
from my imagination. My process varies
depending on the medium I am working
in – it is different when I paint with encaustic or oil than it is with acrylic. With
acrylic I start by pouring or painting
large swathes of colour on the substrate.
I use a large drywall knife or brayer to
move it around. I make marks in it with
various tools and other mediums. I build
up several layers before I start to see the
imagery appear.
In the beginning stage of my painting I
approach it with lots of energy and listen
to upbeat music. This is the easy part!
Pure play, no thinking! Did I mention I
am messy?
Q: What inspires you?
I am inspired by my life and the world
around me and respond to that in my
paintings. I draw inspiration from music
and nature. I am inspired by colour, texture and form. My figurative work came
about from doing outdoor markets surrounded by people.
Q: What brings you the most pleasure
when you are teaching workshops?
I love sharing my knowledge with other
people. I love when students get excited
about what they are learning and have
some “light bulb” moments!
My workshops are about the process and
learning techniques not the results of the
paintings created in the workshops. I do
not teach using a “paint by number”
method; I teach techniques so students
can develop there own style. Of course
it is always a pleasure to see students
leave with some successful pieces of art.
Q: You often do a painting challenge
where you create a painting a day. What
do you learn from that experience?
The answer to this is an article in itself!
I will try to be brief. First of all I do
thirty day challenges. Thirty days is the
magic number to develop a habit. Doing
the challenges has helped me on so many
levels. I show up daily to my studio to
paint - even if is just one small painting.
It creates discipline and helps with procrastination. It has increased my speed
of painting and helped with my decision
making process. Painting small paintings
allows me to experiment with different
subject matter, paint from an object
rather than imagination, try new colours
and combinations, and experiment with a
new technique.
It has also helped me learn what I like
and what I don’t like. I am not concerned
about the results – my goal is to do a
painting! Some are more successful than
others! Like any goal having an accountability partner is the key to success.
Teaming up with a group or another
artist to keep the momentum can be helpful. I use social media and my blog for
accountability. I announce my goal and
then post my results daily. While the
10,000 hour rule may not be true I do believe to become a master you have to do
your time! Practice! Show up! Your
muse won’t show up unless you do! (My
coaching hat is showing up!)
Q: What are you most proud about in
your art career?
To date I am most proud of the fact that
in five years of working at my art practice full time I have been able to eke out
a modest living. I am also proud of gaining signature status in The Federation of
Canadian Artists (AFCA) along with
being juried into several shows including the Sooke and Sidney Fine Art
Shows, winning awards and having a
painting published in a book. ~
pattscrivener.com
Q: You also play and instruct on the
harp. How did that interest come about?
I have to give all the credit to “The
Friendly Giant” – now that is giving my
age away! My favourite part of the show
was the end with the draw bridge and the
harp.
In my youth I studied Royal Conservatory piano. I also played the accordion
and tried my hand at the guitar. As a
young adult I took up pop piano and
started teaching piano lessons. I learned
to play the organ. The harp kept calling
though!
In 2000 while living in Calgary I was
fortunate to find a Celtic harp teacher
who lived a few blocks from me. I went
for weekly lessons, joined a 14 member
harp choir and soon started doing some
solo gigs. It wasn’t until I moved to Vancouver Island in 2008 that I started to
teach harp. That came about after people
heard me play and asked me to teach
them.

The 91 Days
of Summer
Project
by Gaye Adams
T
he idea for this project has been brewing for some time. Let
me tell you about it.
About ten years ago, frustrated with a sense that I had reached
a plateau with my growth as a painter, I decided to take things
to the next level.
What most non-painters don't realize is that for those of us that
paint regularly, most especially those of us that paint for a living, the reliance on photo reference is huge. It allows us to paint
large canvases with a minimum of hassle. It is so convenient,
that some artists never paint from life.
The influence of photography on the production of fine art is
here to stay, but photography has its limitations. The camera
makes decisions about colors and contrasts – even perspective.
Subtlety can be lost or re-interpreted by not only the camera,
but by the computer monitor as well.
When working from a 2D image (a photo) and translating into
2D (the canvas), the process of drawing and painting is a different than when working from life. I am not a scientist and so
can not explain the process, but I do see a profound difference
in how much more slowly skill sets increase when an artist
works in the former process as opposed to the latter.
Ten years ago I started to paint more and more often alla prima
(all in one sitting) plein air (out in the open) paintings. During
the Canadian winters I took to painting from the model and still
life. It was not long before I noticed that when I went back to
working from photo references for a large studio piece, it
seemed much easier. My ability to design, simplify, get the
drawing in accurately and quickly– all took a marked leap
ahead.
When I initially started the process of painting plein air, I had a
lot of failed paintings. It was disheartening. I persevered because of my confidence that I would grow as a painter. In the
process I came to appreciate how wonderful it was to escape
the four walls of the studio on a fine day, and come home with
“the days catch”. Sometimes the catch was impressive, other
days not so much, but the thrill of the chase was stimulating.
The 91 days of Summer Project is a pledge to myself to create
91 paintings (one painting for each day of the Summer) to push
myself to a new level of competence in my plein air practice. In
the book “Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell suggests that it takes
10,000 hours to achieve a high level of competence on any
level. This project will take a good chunk out of that 10,000
hours! I will complete them by September 22, at the end of the
Summer.
I have painted in Tofino, Smithers, Vancouver, rural Fraser
Valley and the Great Bear Rainforest. What I am loving about
this project is that due to the number of paintings I have committed to painting, I am compelled to take advantage of every
opportunity to paint. I feel I am gaining speed and accuracy in
the process, and I am having a LOT of fun”.

“Well” said the doctor, “do you drink or smoke?” “No” Sam

t the ripe age of 25, Victoria artist Kylee Turunen
is a full time artist. Not always so, as just a year
prior, Kylee was trying to make a living by selling
her artwork on a ‘Used Victoria’ website, for a fraction of
their value.
One of the ladies who works at the Gallery at Mattick’s
Farm noticed Kylee’s work online and bought a few paintings for herself. She also brought them to the attention of
the owner of the gallery, Dawn Casson. Dawn contacted
Kylee, signed her up as a gallery artist and adjusted her
paintings to represent the market. Kylee has been selling
her work like crazy ever since and is now solely represented by the Gallery at Mattick’s Farms.

LEARNING
TO
PAINT
She learned to paint on Monday - her strokes were going fine
She forgot to thaw out diner, so... we went out to dine.
She painted trees on Tuesday - she says they are a must.
They were really quite lovely, but... she forgot to dust.
On Wednesday it was daisies - she says they’re really fun.
They had nice lights and darks, but... the laundry wasn’t done.
Painting apples came on Thursday, so juicy, bright and red.
I guess she really was engrossed, as she never made the bed.
It was violets on Friday, in colours she adores.
It never bothered her at all that there were crumbs on the floors.
I found a maid on Saturday, my week in now complete.
My wife can paint the hours away and the house will still be neat.
WELL..now that it is Sunday, you can’t call me a saint.
I cursed and raved and ranted...now the maid has learned to paint.

Get Tanked on Hornby Island
by Jolayne Devente
H
ornby Island has a program called the "get tanked" project headed by Lynne Carmichael. Hornby has water
tanks throughout the island for the fire departments use.
Most have been painted over the years funded by the Arts Council. A new tank was placed close to my property on Anderson
Drive. I enquired about painting it but the funding had dried up
for that project.

In January 2014, Lynne contacted me, informed me that the
project was back on and asked if I was still interested in painting the tank. I had to have my vision approved by the Arts
Council and the residence of Anderson Drive. Once that was
done, I painted the tank in May. Lynne and the Arts Council
were wonderful to work with and the people on Anderson Drive
were incredible supportive. It was hard work, long days (79 hrs
total) and some challenges, but when all is said and done it was
an amazing experience!
