Richards is looking forward to seeing how their team will match up against the other elite math students. “There’s a number of students that have been competitive in local and statewide competition for years,” he said of the RHS team. The competition will consist of a Individuals Round, in which the individual students will take ten questions each for a total of 150 possible points per team, followed by a Team Round, which consists of ten five-point questions for each team, a Power Round, worth fifty points, and a Relay Round, in which more points ten thousand dollars, and the team is able to pay this because of the donations of various community members, including numerous community doctors, Cascade Community Credit Union, Orenco, and members of the RHS math department. “It’s very neat to see the community support us,” said Richards. Roseburg has long been known to have a good math program, and many people are looking forward to see how the team performs against great math students from other states. Richards is proud of his students and has a lot of optimism heading towards the end of the month when all the excitement will happen. “I think we are going to represent RHS very well,” he said. St af f Wr i t e r The entirety of Jacoby auditorium was packed with friends and family of twenty-three contestants each vying for the title of Miss Douglas County or Miss Outstanding Teen. This year a total of $15,000 was raised for the scholarship programs held on April 18 by contestants, community members and businesses, Umpqua Community College, and the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program. The night began with a sizzling opening number to “Mambo Italiano,” by all contestants and the introduction of last years Miss Douglas County, Terri Wilcox, and Miss Outstanding Teen, Caroline Champion. They each got a final chance to perform their talents before they gave up their titles. Champion beautifully sang “Crazy Dreams,” by Carrie Underwood and Wilcox performed a dance dedicated to her boyfriend in the military to “When You’re Gone,” by Avril Lavigne. Jeff Johnson was M.C. for the night but was upset that he “didn’t get to wear a swimsuit too.” First was the teen portion with talent, fitness, and evening gown competition which included their on stage question. Vying for the title of Miss Outstanding Teen were Julianna Maddox, Autumn Shulze, Andie Griffith, Kaitlyn Fallon, Chelsea Spencer, Kendall Monteith, Erika Stanle, Andrea Reber, Caitlyn Vos, and Nicole Levin. “It was the swimsuit competition the Miss asked them their questions. The Build Your Own Scholarship Award was created for girls to get donations for scholarships by community members and businesses. Elizabeth Denny raised the most money and got this award along with second runner up, gaining $1500 for scholarships. Ashley Ziegler, first runner up got $3000. Finally, the moment each girl was waiting for came. The title of Miss Douglas County 2009, who would go on to Miss Oregon, went to Kelly Dorius who received a total $7000 in scholarships. As Terri Wilcox gave up her title and crowned Dorius, she was positively ecstatic. Overall, the night was full of tears and happiness for the girls who would go on to compete to represent the state of Oregon in the Miss America and American Miss Outstanding Teen pageants. The community of Douglas County will have its fingers crossed for these lucky ladies. Earthquake shocks many Are computer viruses crashing your PC? Jadon M. Copy Edi tor A disastrous earthquake struck central Mexico, rattling nerves in a city already tense from the swine flu outbreak. The quake has been responsible for 149 deaths so far throughout Mexico. Many workers fled to the streets as the quake shook the buildings around them. “I’m scared,” said Sarai Luna Pajas, a 22-year-old social services worker standing outside her office building moments after it hit. “We Mexicans are not used to living with so much fear, but all that is happening - the economic crisis, the illnesses and now this - it feels like the Apocalypse.” A fellow coworker to Pajas, Harold Gutierrez, added in his opinion of the world coming to an end. “If it is, it is God’s plan,” he said over green mask he wore to ward off swine flu. The quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and was centered near Chilpancingo, about 130 miles southwest of Mexico City or 50 miles from the resort of Acapulco. To add to the stress of the Mexican people, they had been hard hit by a swine flew outbreak shortly before the quake hit. Experts don’t know why it has only shown up in Mexico nor why it has surfaced now. Throughout the baffling confusion the flu continues to wreak havoc on Mexico with now more than 140 deaths, with more than 1,600 suspected cases. Mexican Health Minister Jose Cordova told of 1,311 people in the hospital with flu symptoms. The Health Ministry’s fatality estimate increased from 152 yesterday. The U.S. has urged to suspend all unnecessary travel to Mexico and has begun screening all incoming Photo provided by the Internet. travelers from Mexico into the U.S. Government officials have ordered schools shut nationwide until May 6 and have told some businesses to close as the suspected death toll climbs from the flu outbreak. Authorities have told people not to gather in large groups and to avoid shaking hands and kissing hello to contain the virus. Most cases are still limited to Mexico City and the states of Mexico and San Luis Potosi. Still, countries around the world are preparing for the spread of the swine flu. St af f Wr i t e r On Wednesday April 9, about 350 miles off of the Somalia coast, pirates took Captain Richard Phillips hostage. However, on Sunday, April 12, Navy snipers shot three of the four pirates dead. The pirates were asking for ransom but were shot down before Phillips was handed over. Phillips is now home, thanks to the Navy. “The captain is in good health. He’s showered up and in a clean set of clothes,” said Navy Vice Administrator Bill Gortney. Phillips is very glad to be safe and out of danger. He contacted his wife by phone Sunday night, right after his rescue. In Phillips’ hometown of Underhill, Vermont, spokeswoman Alison McColl said Phillips’ wife, Andrea Phillips, had said she is very pleased to know that her husband is in good condition. “She was laughing while she was on the phone with him,” McColl told reporters. “She was saying his trademark sense of humor was still very much intact, and he’s in great spirits. St af f Wr i t e r Roseburg High School has many of dances every year, but the one that always has the most people anticipating its arrival is prom. The junior/senior prom happens every year in the springtime and is put on by the Leadership students. This year prom will be May 16. Prom is normally held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in the Community Building. All the Roseburg High dances have themes and prom is not exception. Prom is a hard one to choose because it is supposed to be fun, and romantic at the same time, without being too cheesy. This year prom will not be held at the fairgrounds and the theme is something totally different than anything the Leadership class has ever chosen. This year’s theme is borrowed from William Shakespeare’s play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” written in the 1500’s. Feature page 4 5/6/09 Spring is bustin’ out all over the place Garrett O. St af f Wr i t e r Spring is finally here. It’s here in all its green, fresh, sunny glory. People begin to look alive again after a pretty solid four or five months of dreary grey. They begin to feel alive again as well. It is no doubt a great time of year. Trees are always pretty nice during Spring. After beginning the season with little more than bare branches, they slowly grow buds which grow steadily larger over the course of a few weeks. It seems like what always happens is that there will be one very nice week of weather, and then all of the sudden there Especially in Roseburg, the will be an explosion of flowers weather that comes with Spring from all kinds of trees. Lots of can be crazy. There will be days other plants come of absolute up too, and have beauty and their fair share of days of grey just as bad as flowers. Some people express lament over weather that can’t seem to make up its mind, but the alternating rain and sun creates a great thing for plants, which leads to widespread green all over the place. As they say, “April showers bring May flowers.” In places other than Roseburg, even crazier weather phenomonons happen, with Tornado Alley being most active during this time of year. In late Spring the hurricane season begins along with the media coverage that goes with that. Spring is a time of great change, and it has affected people deeply enough to cause several holidays. It is the beginning of the New Year in several countries, including China, Afghanistan, Persia, and Vietnam. Easter is an important holiday to many people, and it happens two days after Good Friday, which is usually around the middle of April. In Pakistan, there are many kite festivals, with awards distributed to the winners of them. In India, Holi occurs, which is the most vibrant festival of colors observed by Indian Hindus. In it, people throw water and apply color powders to each other. With many holidays, the growth of new flowers and the reemergence of sunshine after many months during which it was sparse, spring is more than just the season that comes before summer, it’s a wonderful time of beauty and rebirth. How to protect your rights during police encounters Matt M. Edi tor in Chief The United States Constitution ensures the rights of every citizen. High school students, most of whom have recently studied the Constitution, should have the best idea of what their rights are. Teenagers, however, are actually the most likely to relinquish their rights because of simple ignorance or intimidation during police encounters. The country we live in was founded with strict ideas of citizen’s rights and by knowing and defending their rights, even high school students can be a part of protecting the democracy they are a part of. The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation and particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons or things to be seized.” In short, this means that neither you nor your property can be searched without a warrant or at the very least, probable cause. Any evidence gathered without either of those things was illegally gathered and will be inadmissible in court. You give up this protection, however, if you consent to a police officer’s request for a search. If a police officer asks if he can search you, you always have the right to politely say no. Teenagers are often intimidated are simply asserting your rights. into agreeing to searches because If a police officer has probable they are afraid of getting into trouble and police appear to have all the power. Already, ETS has gone on a couple of campus visits to places such as Portland to visit Portland State University. While ETS was there, they visited OMSI. Before this school year is over, ETS will be visiting Ashland’s college Southern Oregon University and of course, the community college in Roseburg, Umpqua Community College. The purposes of these campus visits are to let the ETS students know what the colleges have to offer. ETS member, Tiffany Kuyper added, “It was a lot of fun and it really helped with looking for colleges.” “To get into ETS, you need to go to the career center and pick up an application and get details from me,” adds Day. “ETS is an amazing opportunity that costs the student absolutely nothing; I wish it was around when I was in school.” For more information or to pick up an application, people of all classes, races, and ages can be victims to this abuse. Domestic violence has many different forms and each form can be broken up into four dimensions. A person can be a victim of physical violence, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, economic deprivation, intimidation, and threats of violence. The different dimensions of domestic violence are mode, frequency, severity, and transitory or permanent injury. The mode of domestic violence is the type of violence towards the victim. The frequency determines how often the abuse occurs. Sometimes a person will only be a victim of violence every once and awhile, this is on/off or occasional domestic violence. This happens to most victims at first because the person doing the abusing is afraid of getting caught and will wait to strike again until they become more confident. Chronic violence happens when the perpetrator has enough confidence to continually abuse their partner. Domestic violence often happens in cycles and most domestic violence cases will go through periods of relapses with no violence or abuse. The you without your consent. ETS helps students Domestic violence hurts families Kathryn F. St af f Wr i t e r “The purpose of ETS is to help students get to college,” enthusiastically states Laci Day, ETS coordinator. ETS, also known as Educational Talent Search and is a part of the Trio program. “Students want to join ETS because on a monetary level, we can provide support in various ways. For example, we pay for SATs, college application fees, campus visitations, free tutoring, and we have a 200dollar grant we can award each ETS student for an educational purpose. Secondly, ETS is there to assist you in filling out in the complicated postsecondary financial aide application process. On top of that, ETS is fun! I’ve been known to feed my students at meetings,” states Day. The best part about ETS is that it doesn’t demand much from the student and yet they benefit greatly from this program. “ETS students are obligated to attend Jessica B. St af f Wr i t e r There are some people that make great couples. They enjoy being around each other and can talk to each other without arguing or offending one another. Not all couples are like this, though. Sometimes it is hard for two people to get along and live together. They will begin to compete with one another or one will want to dominate the other. This is called domestic violence. Although most people are not victims to domestic violence, many people are exposed to it. Domestic violence (also known as spousal abuse, domestic abuse or intimate partner abuse) is when a family member, partner, or ex-partner begins to dominate and carry out the actions of dominating someone they are or were close with. Both men and women can be perpetrators of domestic violence, and both men and women can be victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence occurs in any culture, severity of abuse deals with both the psychological and physical abuse that happens to a partner. Transitory or permanent is how severe the abuse is. Transitory is anywhere from mild to moderate injuries, permanent is anything that leaves permanent side effects on the victim, such as paralysis or even death. In the past, when a domestic case was reported the law officials would require the couple or family to see a family counselor instead of taking the time to look into the case. This was because the police viewed domestic violence cases as only internal family issues, and thought that the government should not interfere. Domestic violence used to only be a misdemeanor until a few decades ago. Now when a person is affected by domestic violence they can turn to the police or a social service agency in their community. Agencies like these specialize in family issues and will investigate the case and keep the person from danger in the present situation and in the future. When we speed up time through the 1800’s, music is used to express events to the people, as it is today as well. Music was used to express points of view on wars, civil rights, and many other events through the 1800’s, and up through the late 1900’s. Now, music is a toy for the ears. With many different styles, such as Rock, Metal, Rap, and Country, people have a wide variety of what they want to listen too. Now, with music being such a necessity for everyone, bans on music in school and anywhere else causes problems to those who are deprived. Music expands itself to many different subjects. Writing music, singing music, playing an instrument, all these things contribute to what we know as music in this modern age. Music is always changing, and always comes out with new styles. Look at our music today, and just imagine how what you are listening to roots back to older music, like jazz or tin-pan alley. Music is quite a flexible thing, as our ears flex to the sound it produces. Nothing can take away the power to produce music to the public, and therefore, music will keep being produced for everyone, using its new styles. Commentary page 6 5/6/09 Determination: the key to success F r u s t r a t i o n s , accomplishment, and being positive are all keys to success. Preparing to have a successful future is not very easy for most young adults to obtain when they are not focused on the important things that take place in life. Being young, parties, and their nightlife are the main concerns of most high school students. If students learned how to think about what they want for themselves and others, before they participated in activities then they would not end up ruining their ability to be successful; they would have a better chance at success. Students do not think about how much ability they really have. They tend to find themselves not thinking about what they could actually gain for their lives to come. Find a focus in life and learn to base all your decisions on your future. This may be hard the right direction takes time and effort. A tooth comes out when it is ready, but if you take it out too soon it causes damage, just like putting yourself into situations that may cause damage for your life to come. Frustration in a student’s life is not a bad thing. Students can turn that frustration into something they want to accomplish. However, this accomplishment depends on the type of frustration that student is going through. If it is caused by anger or stress, people can become destructive and not think about their actions, and when frustration results from guilt or depression, people will probably want to give up and not move forward. Depending on students’ strengths, anyone can get through whatever they want if they put their minds to it. Dr. Berger, a psychologist, stated, “Frustration is not necessarily bad since it can be a useful indicator of the problems in a person’s life Amber Merry Staff Writer and sound dumb, but it really works. Some may not even appreciate that they have the ability to guide their own lives in the right direction. However, it is not a simple task like pulling out a tooth and having a new one grow back. Guiding your life in and, as a result, it can act as a motivator to change,” This proves that if someone is willing to change then success can take place in their life. Accomplishments make everyone feel good about themselves and gives students the influence to succeed more from their accomplishments. “As students move through college and into the world of work, they will be judged on their accomplishments. Therefore, every student who purposely builds a list of meaningful accomplishments will greatly increase their chances of achieving their goals,” said author Bob Roth. Accomplishments affect not just how your resume looks or what job you end up with, it affects your confidence in what you do. Having a positive attitude all the time is a great aspect that most students do not seem to have these days. “If you adopt it as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into your life, and makes you happier, brighter and more successful. With a positive attitude you see the bright side of life, become optimistic and expect the best to happen,” said Remez Sasson, author and creator of Success Consciousness. Being happy is not a bad thing, it also does not mean someone is “fake”. Happiness is when someone is content about what they do or who they are. When someone is positive, happy, and content it makes their efforts turn out to great success, and makes others around them appreciate what they do. Success is a meaningful word, and may, at times, seem threatening, but being successful is not that hard. You just have to put out a little time and effort in what you do. Try to think ahead more and your life will turn out just the way you had never imagined. Frustrations, accomplishments, and being positive leads to success, just think about it, it really is not that hard to get through if you use some effort. We don’t need no education, or thought control Although it’s not listed as an inalienable right in the Declaration of Independence or any other such place, Americans have come to view the right to an education as one of the most valuable assets of being an American. Every child, no matter how poor or lowly, is allowed to attend school for free and work hard to pursue their goals. That’s the basis of the idea of the American Dream. Twelve years of schooling, of working hard and doing the right things, can lead any child to the point at which they are ready to get a job to earn money to support themselves and the American economy. That’s how our system is set up, and it maintains itself as American kids buy into the idea and use their schooling as a springboard to the economic prosperity that has become an important part of America. Many American children actually value that idea a lot. They work hard in their school, jump through the right hoops, and find their route to prosperity. But it’s not really education that they are valuing, it’s just schooling. Others see idiocy in the way the school system works, and, falsely believing that the system into which they have been thrust is education, develop a dislike for the very concept. Schooling teaches them to devalue education, something they should love. It’s clear that most American children don’t care for education. If kids actually valued education, it wouldn’t be necessary to have “Literacy Weeks” and other such drives to encourage kids to pick up a book once in a while, and teachers wouldn’t need to attach points and rewards to every assignment just to ensure that kids did them. If kids actually valued education, they would choose to read books themselves and they would accept their teachers’ assignments with open arms as simply more opportunities to learn. Most kids rarely seek opportunities to learn, but the blame for this can’t be put on their shoulders; they have been taught their attitude by a society which maintains a faulty school system. From the time American children are thrust into the arena of public schooling at the age of five, they are taught to work hard and learn the right things in order to gain something later on in life. They are not taught basic math skills because basic math skills are important or because basic math skills are interesting. They learn basic math skills because they’ll need them later in middle school. They need to go to middle school so they can go to high school, and they need to go to high school so they can later go to college or Matt Moll Editor ‘n Chief at the very least, get a job after high school. School becomes just a process of jumping through hoops to prove that you can jump through hoops. Parents support this process by placing a too-large emphasis on their children’s grades, which, in truth are meaningless. (If grades actually meant anything, it wouldn’t be possible and even easy to get an “A” on a book report for a novel you’ve never read.) School counselors support this process when they encourage every kid to go to college so that they can get a job that makes more money. There are more important things than jobs or money, and most people really shouldn’t go to college. College, like all schooling, is a certain kind of learning that interests some people a great deal. Others would really be better off finding their education elsewhere, but these faulty ideas concerning education have become such a part of our culture and the way our society thinks that most people fail to even recognize what they’re missing as they focus on the wrong things. Education is something that can be acquired in any number of ways, the least of which is school. There are opportunities for people to learn and be enriched everywhere they look as long as they keep an open mind. Too often school teaches kids to be close-minded. It’s in the general attitude of the system. They teach the same core subjects to everyone, as if those subjects were necessarily important to everyone. They tell kids to make sure they follow the one right track to avoid mingling with those who aren’t on that track -those who do drugs or skip school or take part in any other thing that can be a distraction to the learning that school gives you. The very idea of that is contrary to the concept of learning. Kids should be encouraged to go and do as many things as possible and learn from as many people as possible. Instead of following a track which will lead them to a comfortable career to fund a life of ignorance, kids should go out and travel the world, studying everything and sharing ideas with everyone. With an open mind, that is the process by which true learning can take place. The chances of any serious changes ever being made in the education system seem very slim; it’s just too engrained in our society. If however, enough kids start not just rejecting schooling and complaining about how crappy it is but actually seek their own education through other routes, keeping an open mind and enjoying the learning they can glean from all methods, progress can possibly be made. It can’t be done by simply rejecting school and choosing to do nothing instead, but only by leaving the comforts of ignorance, opening one’s mind, and going out to discover the world and an actual education. PRO MUSIC LEARNING MORE IMPORTANT STUDENTS’ FREEDOM TO LISTEN IN CLASS CON MUSIC There have been a number of changes to the rules this year, one of them being the banning of all music devices in the classroom. I don’t think that such a banning is necessary; teachers should be allowed to make that decision themselves. One of the arguments against allowing music devices in the classroom is that they are too big of a distraction to be in a classroom setting. That may be the case sometimes, such as when a teacher is talking, but that goes back to what I was saying about teachers being the ones choosing if and when students can listen to their music. In an art class, students may do better if they are listening to music, as they won’t be talking to anyone, and will be able to focus solely on their work. However, if it is a class where a teacher is mostly lecturing students and they’re having to take notes, music would only serve to distract from what that teacher was saying, and that would be inappropriate. Some students say that they have trouble focusing on their work, and any amount of music causes them to not be able to do it. A conflict would arise between that student and a student that had their music loud enough to be heard by other, which would become a problem. That problem could be solved by the classroom rule of “if I can hear it, it gets turned off, and/ or taken away,” which is how it was supposed to be before the be silent if they are able to listen to their music, which would prevent them from distracting others (as long as the volume was at a reasonable level). Another argument is that students can record answers to tests and listen to them on their music devices, allowing them to sneakily cheat while the teacher thinks they are just getting their jam on. I’ve never heard of anyone putting in the effort to do that, and the idea was first introduced to me by a teacher who was explaining why they didn’t allow personal music players in their class, which is kind of ironic. If a teacher is worried about that happening, then they can simply not allow music device during a test, which seems like a good idea anyway. Since all of those counterarguments have very simple solutions, it’s kind of ridiculous to put a school-wide ban on music devices to prevent them from happening. Besides, a teacher is allowed to choose whether or not they let students eat food in their classroom, so why not let them decide on this too? Garrett Okonek Staff Writer banning anyway. The opposite can be true also; some students can concentrate best when listening to music. That’s how I am, and it’s really distracting to me when there are a lot of people around me talking. In that case, it works out best for me to put on my headphones and tune all those people out. Likewise, a student that is talking excessively may I know that all people can relate are going off around them. when I say that music can have a very Students that are near the music soothing effect on the human body and being played will also be affected. mind. Commentary page 7 If life gives you lemons... Have you ever felt completely down because of some unfortunate incident or occurrence? The truth is that we all have been through some difficult experience where we feel completely rid of spirit. Yet it seems that no matter the situation we hear the same advice from our friends, “ look on the bright side”. This “glass half-full” concept, although hard to apply, has indeed been proven effective. My personal philosophy on this subject is: no matter how full your glass may be, drink every last drop of it! Taking the most you can out of life, including those tough experiences, can result advantageous to you. For example, let’s say your boyfriend or girlfriend breaks up with you. It’s okay to be sad but not to the point where you would go home and hang yourself by the neck (applies to any other suicide method). Needless to say such action would not be positive. Instead, why not take advantage of the fact that you are single and don’t have to watch your figure anymore by consuming mass amounts of calorie-filled goodies. Another positive way to rejoice in your solo state is to spend a day with the girls, or boys, shopping or playing video games. Your aim is to make the best out of something that is probably one of the worst things that could have happened to you. Do something to help your mind focus on something else preferably with family or friends. Some good activities would be organizing a party, going camping, or maybe a road Jasmin Vargas Staff Writer trip. If such recreational doings are not possible for you, you may try simpler tasks such as reading a new book, watching a movie, or even learning a new language. If you find yourself in a situation where something utterly devastating has befallen on you it is natural that you feel the need to grieve. However it is not healthy to grieve so excessively to the extent where it takes over you life and prevents happiness. When one goes thru a traumatic experience it is very hard to move on and continue with your life. For example, someone in your family or circle of friends dies. Although you might think that such an experience has no positive side, it does, every experience does. It can teach you to value not only your family and friends but you own life as well. It can also teach you to appreciate every day and (wisely) live it to the fullest. Every experience in our life be it happy, sad, or devastating, has a positive side. Why? Because shows us a lesson, one way or another. Therefore, look at the positive side of every situation because chances are that you will take a good lesson from it that will be beneficial to you in the future. Optimism may prove to be the key to your perseverance in life. It is like the great Roman lyric poet, Quintus (Horace), said, “ Adversity has the effects of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Banks didn’t deser ve TARP money With the recent swine flu outbreak, the economy has been the least of news stories and problems these days, though that doesn’t mean that the problems went away. Banks around the U.S are still trying to pay back the government for the TARP money that was given to them. What I don’t like is it doesn’t seem that most banks want to pay back the government and help us get back on our feet. The banks seem to me like they are going to school. At first it was cool and popular to get the money from the government, and banks across the U.S lined up to get some of their own, including some banks that barely, if at all, needed it. Now that people are viewing banks that received the TARP money as unstable, the banks have become the smelly kid at the back of the class. To reinstitute their “coolness” and get popular in the schoolyard again, many banks, like TCF Jadon Morse Copy Editor Financial Corporation, a financial holding corporation based in Minnesota, are lining up to repay the TARP money. TCF Financial plans to return more than $361 million it got from the federal government. “TCF has sufficient capital and access to capital to operate without the TARP money,” said Bill Cooper, chairman and chief executive office. Cooper said “the rules have definitely changed” since TCF took the money under a program for healthy banks. “As a result, public perception views those banks that took the TARP money as having done so out of weakness and a need to survive without distinction among TARP programs. “We believe participation in TARP has created a competitive disadvantage for TCF and it is in the best interest of our shareholders to redeem these shares.” Under the government’s rules, however, the money can’t be repaid until after a 30-day notice period. Banks and other organizations shouldn’t run business like a local children’s school playground, following the lead and popular vote to receive something that they don’t need and don’t deserve. If they are already paying back the government, I don’t think they needed our money so desperately in the first place. 5/6/09 Take a dip, lose your lip The ever-growing tobacco use in teens is rising tremendously. The accessibility and the so-called “adults” that supply it to the minors are creating a bigger problem than any of them think. You smoke your first cigarette or you take your first dip, and you think, “Oh this is cool!” or “This is fun!” The reality is that cigarettes and chewing tobacco come with many risks, and the most serious of them being is cancer. Nicotine is the main chemical in tobacco that brings satisfaction. It is a drug, no matter what anyone says. If you chew or smoke over a long period of time and try to quit, you will find it incredibly hard to fight the urges and withdrawals. Just like any drug that is a d d i c t i v e , it is hard to o v e r c o m e . W i t h cigarettes, you are putting t h o u s a n d s of unknown chemicals into your body, and more i m p o r t a n t l y, into your lungs. You need your lungs to breathe and live, so why would you harm them in any way, especially by putting c h e m i c a l s unknown to you, in them? I am sure that puffin’ on a cigarette will calm you down and relieve some of your stress but, over time, your body needs more nicotine to reach the same effect as your first cigarette. You start out with smoking one, choking and gagging on the smoke, but you find it in yourself to smoke another one. This one goes down smoother, but still a bit rough. Time goes by and you finally can put a cigarette down without any problems, and you move on to smoking cigarette after cigarette. Soon you are putting down a pack a day and your conscience has no idea what you are doing to your body. The harmful effects from smoking can sometimes be ever-lasting and you will never be able to repair the damage you caused to yourself. People often say chewing tobacco is a safer alternative to cigarettes because you don’t smoke it. That is a myth. People believe that because chewing tobacco is not smoked, it is safer for your body, but are they wrong. Ten dips a day is equal to the nicotine you get from smoking 3040 cigarettes, according w w w. t o b a c c o f r e e u . o r g . Smokeless tobacco comes in two forms: snuff and chewing tobacco. Snuff is a fine-grain, moist form of tobacco. It can be sniffed through the nose, but is most often sucked on in the mouth. Chewing tobacco is a shredded or leafy form of tobacco. There are numerous brands and flavors to choose from including Grizzly, Longhorn, Copenhagen, Michael Heichel Staff Writer Skoal, and Timberwolf. They all have different flavors such as mint, wintergreen, straight and natural. Skoal also offers fruity flavors, which I find to be directed more towards the teen population. I believe that tobacco companies do not care whether teens start using. I am sure they believe the more people they get hooked, the more money they will make. These companies see the damage they cause to people and they seem to turn the other way. Chewing tobacco causes tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. Bad breath and stained teeth are also other effects of chewing tobacco. There are no benefits from tobacco, whether it be smoking or chewing. But remember this, as a good friend once told me, “Take a dip, Lose your lip!” Students should decide book choices Every year at RHS, students take an English class in some shape or form. It seems that every quarter of every single one of these years there are by default new books, plays, short stories or other forms of literature that are required reading for the class. Whether it be the thousands of years old barely-readable translation of Oedipus or the ever-present favorite amongst serial killers, Catcher in the Rye, students are constantly being immersed (sometimes forcibly) into new and varying forms of literature. One would think that with this great quantity and variety, that students would find some joy in the books they were assigned. This is, sadly, very hit-andmiss throughout the four years students are enrolled at RHS. Perhaps if students had a bit more freedom with which literature to which they were assigned, this problem could be avoided and more kids could grow a better relationship with reading. At present, this relationship with reading is abysmal with most kids. Then again, I don’t blame them. Most of the reading they do is done at school, and at school, reading is treated like work. Students often are assigned entire chapters not to make progress in the book, not to reveal the unfolding plot, but so they can quiz on small details the next day. This assembly line procedure teaches the students not only the significance of a two sentence passage on page 152, but that reading is ultimately a hollow shell that is only used for a nice letter grade on an upcoming progress report. This problem is again compounded by the nature at which these books are assigned. Books are read on a chapter by chapter basis with a test and a lengthy teacher explanation of the exact symbolism that may or may not be present. Individual thought over recurring themes or plot development is replaced with, “What did Tybalt say to Mercutio in scene V” rather than, “Why do you suppose Shakespeare makes love and death interwoven with light and darkness?” The assumption is that there is a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’ way to look at literature and thus when students go to pick up a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, they might as well be picking up an algebra textbook that involves rape. Teachers can’t really do anything to change this process however, as the school district demands that certain subjects be ‘covered’ in a certain amount of time. This restriction gets teachers from both prior literature we Nick Kintop teacher. With these realizations, the problem becomes not one with our particular school, but the system as a whole. One of the worst facets of mandatory reading is when the entire class is assigned the same piece of literature. While it makes sense to do this for cohesiveness of assignments and quizzes, it really makes no lasting impression upon the student if he does not like the literature. This falls into the quantity over quality argument that students often make with regards to school, like the ever present question, “When am I ever going to use this in real life?” This is very important when it comes to literature for books are some of the most powerful things ever created. I can say for myself that when I read a book that I actually like, I can sit there for hours until it’s finished. Books have been known to change peoples’ lives and even the world. What good Assistant Editor were taught in middle school and the classics we’re expected to know in college, “There’s a foundation professors expect kids to have, do I want to teach puritan, depressing literature all year, no, but one must understand from whence modern literature came,” says Jennifer Parkhurst, English is it reading the commentary on society in Of Mice and Men, or the sometimes witty, mostly terrible satire on men and women featured in Pride and Prejudice if you can’t even stand to read them for any other reason than just to get through them? If students were allowed to choose their own reading assignments, they could select something that spoke to them in an interesting way. Some classics that are mandated by the school system actually are good to study. Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird are cornerstones of literature that students will encounter much in their future. 2000 Year old Greek translations and vague satire on the subject of Victorian England courtship are debatable at best. There are many more modern literature that could be more relevant. Perhaps including a short story by Stephen King or Clockwork Orange? Whatever the case may be, greater student choice with regard to literature will give them a sense of independence and freedom of thought that will trump any knowledge a wellknown, hated book can give. Sports page 8 5/6/09 Softball team works their way to the top Amber M. St af f Wr i t e r This year ’s Roseburg softball team, currently ranked third in the state, has been working their way to the top. They have played two double-headers, one single, and one tournament, which was in Medford. In the first double-header, the girl’s softball team won both games, but then in the second double-header they lost one and won one. Their next game will be in Grants Pass on Saturday, May 2. Grants Pass is supposed to be Roseburg’s toughest opponent because they won last year ’s state championship. The Roseburg softball team is hoping to defeat them this year and win this year ’s championship. “We will make it far in the play offs. We are playing well as a team, and we have a young group of girls and as the season goes we will do better,” Tatum Anderson stated. This year ’s starting line up includes sophomore Marissa Duarte, as pitcher, junior Evie Jarrett, catcher, senior Sammy Fummerton, playing first base. Playing second base is, senior Nikki Bassett. Playing third base and also as pitcher is, junior Crysta Conn. Sophomore Breanne Dange rous sports Jasmin V. St af f Wr i t e r Sports are fun, competitive, and exciting but they seem to lose their thrill when they result in a serious injury. Many sports include shoving, pushing, and emitting blows of force that cause severe damage. However there are some that are higher on the hazardous scale and are notorious for causing bad wounds. Holding the lead with 409,799 injuries, based on a survey conducted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is Basketball. Most of these Basketball-caused injuries are ankle or knee sprains. The injuries are the results of bad landings and forceful leaps. Next on the list is Football with 375,115 injuries. Dangerous Football injuries include concussions that in some cases result in long-term brain damage. There have also been some cases of spine injuries caused by the force exerted when tackling. Finally there is bicycling with 317,041 injuries. This number of injuries consists mostly of cases of head trauma. It is true that these sports are indeed dangerous, however these injuries can be prevented. It is very important to warm-up ahead of time before any strenuous activity. Warming-up helps prepare you physically. It stretches your muscles so that you will not injure yourself because of inflexibility. It is also vital to wear all possible protection equipment. This includes helmet, kneepads, elbow pads etc. The majority of bicycling injuries are due in part by the lack of protection equipment. This equipment will protect your body and lessen the force of a hit. It is beneficial to your health to have plenty of rest before any sport is started which will assure that you will be refreshed and ready for the game. An added measure in preventing injuries is eating nutritiously. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet will help keep you energized and fueled. Overtraining can make you more liable to suffer an injury thus it should be avoided. There have been occurrences where players have died of over exposure to the sun or heat stroke. To evade such occurrences you have to maintain the body fully hydrated, this includes drinking plenty of water throughout the game. It is imperative that you know the limitations of your body and do not cross those limitations. If an injury occurs there must be full recovery before any activity is resumed. Otherwise it will just cause more damage to your body. The staggering statistics of these risky sports can be greatly decreased if such methods, as mentioned, are applied. Following preventive measures will help avoid injuries and insure that safe, sporty fun can continue. Paula Newby-Fraser, Ironman triathlete, said that if you exercise and warm-up (among other protection measures) you will have “balanced fitness with minimum injury risk and maximum fun”. Thomas plays the shortstop position. In left field and also playing center field. Off field is, senior Cadee Kinne. Finally, senior Olivia Osborne plays left Field. St af f Wr i t e r The horse racing industry has long evoked images of wealth, romanticism, and extravagant hats. However, in recent years, the horse racing industry has been placed under scrutiny for performance enhancing drugs, insurance scandals, deception, and horse fatalities. “They weigh at least 1,000 pounds, they have legs that are supported by ankles the size of human’s, and they’re forced to run around dirt tracks at speeds of more than 30 miles per hour while carrying people on their backs,” Ted Miller reported in his 2001 article which discussed six recent racehorse deaths at the famed track, Emerald Downs. A recent study concluded that one in every 22 race horses suffer an injury that prevents them from finishing a race while an additional 800 horses are euthanized each year from race related injuries. With millions of dollars invested in each horse and fame and fortune at stake, racehorses begin training when their skeletal systems are still growing and are not equipped to handle the stress of running at high speeds. As a general rule, horses are not skeletally sound until the age of four, which is two years older than most horses on the track. Racing horses prematurely creates strained tendons or hairline fractures that can be difficult to diagnose and even harder to treat. Due to their size, horses typically do not respond well to surgery; they often become disoriented and cause further damage when coming out of anesthesia. Owners often, elect to euthanize the animal as opposed to spending upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars on veterinarian bills on an animal that will never race again (never turn a profit). With annual costs estimated at $50,000 per year, “simply sending one to pasture, injured or not, is not an option all owners are willing to consider,” reported one Kentucky newspaper. Besides running horses prematurely, the increase in performance enhancing drugs, including steroids, is on the rise. “Finding an American racehorse trained on the traditional hay, oats, and water probably would be impossible,” stated John Scheinman, a Washington Post reporter. Paralleling other professional athletes, racehorses are becoming addicted to drugs when their trainers administer them to keep horses racing when they have no business being on the track. Ironically, Kentucky (home of the Kentucky Derby) holds the reputation for being the most lenient state in regards to drug use. “There are trainers pumping horses full of illegal drugs every day,” says a former Churchill Downs public relations director. “With so much money on the line, people will do anything to make their horses run faster.” The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby ended tragically when the filly, Eight Bells, fractured both front ankles shortly after finishing second to Big Brown. The injury was so severe that Eight Bells was put down on the track. “She didn’t have a front leg to stand on to be splinted and hauled off in the ambulance, so she was immediately euthanized,” said track veterinarian Larry Bramlage. This was the second time in three years that a Triple Crown race was riddled with tragedy, the first being the 2006 Preakness where the racehorse, Barbaro, sustained similar injuries to his front ankle. Eight Bells is just the latest thoroughbred to run itself to death. With the death toll high, the question needs to be asked why the sport isn’t under review from the legal systems. In a sport where the star athlete is trained too early and tossed aside before it reaches maturity, it’s a wonder that more horses don’t die. Until the general public is educated on the horse racing industry and stricter regulations are in place, horses are going to continue to die on the track. A reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News stated, “It is not something they talk about much in their advertising, but horses die in this sport all the time-every day, every single day.” well such as USA Synchro. Synchronized swimmer skill is judged in the categories of strength, flexibility, and aerobic endurance. The teams, which usually consist of 10 athletes, perform difficult routines in two different categories. One is the technical routine in which is a choreographed number performed for judges. The free event allows much more diversity in how the team approaches the event, since no specific plan or choreography is required. Routines usually are two and a half to five minutes in length. Routines consist of a wide variety of moves and performance techniques. Most commonly featured are They may also incorporate throws in which a swimmer is lifted out of the water. The scoring is made upon the two categories of technique and art. Art is worth 60 percent of the points while the technical category is worth 40 percent. Other than the team competition, the other entry contestants can make is the duet. The same rules still apply, but as there are only two athletes the more intricate patterns are not present. There was formerly a solo event, but that was cancelled in 1992. The last gold medalists for that event were a tie between Sylvie Flechette of Canada and Kirsten Sprague of the U.S. Despite these two medalists, the major player in the world of synchronized swimming is Russia. Having won the last three Olympics in both categories of team and duet, they are undoubtedly at the top of the game. Synchronized swimming is not confined to national and Olympic athletes however. Children are allowed to start at seven years old and are allowed into degrees of competition depending on skill and age. The masters are over 15 with varsity, junior varsity and club falling into that age range. The smaller competitions are judged by a panel of three judges which score the athletes on a scale of 1-10. With different leagues starting at different times, and with playoffs and off-season breaks happening during different times, is easy to never run out of things to talk about. Currently Matt Moll is an avid FDA watcher, paying close attention to new standards and laws on foods and drugs. However, for Zach, it’s a different story. Zach likes things with pace (and the letter “N”), such as the NBA, NFL, NASCAR. And luckily enough, NASCAR is in the midst of its season, the NBA is in the playoffs and the NFL, well, for the most part it isn’t dominating the news yet, so I can still watch ESPN 24/7 and not get too bored. Having been an avid NASCAR fan at birth, Matt Moll has several favorite drivers and tracks. The next race is at Matt’s favorite track ever, Richmond. He looks to be otherwise rejuvenated with a youthful and hick-like vigor. Though he can disagree with the length of the season (36 races,) he can agree that his main man, Amelia Earhart, I mean, Dale Earnhardt Jr is doing relatively well this NASCAR season. Yes, he hasn’t won a race this season, but his work effort is what Matt Moll commends… Or that’s at least what he said in a recent interview. “Not only do I like fast cars and the number 88, but the fact that Dale is so fast is what excites me, he just drives that car, like, like a race car… [He goes] So fast.” Speaking of exciting, and winners. The NBA playoffs are just a couple weeks old, and many things have become apparent. Teams thought to be easy winners are struggling against the underdogs, reminding Matt Moll how much he loves Chinese food and pine cones. Molls stated favorite team is the local Oregon favorite, the Portland Timbers. Projected to enter both the MLS and NBA in 2011, Matt Moll and many other local RHS students show their love and support by wearing expiring Portland Trailblazer gear. A reason for the replacement and for the first team in sports history to carry the same roster, name and coaching staff into two different major league sports is still unknown. What is known is that the Timbers will continue their rivalries with other Division I soccer teams and developmental basketball teams. While the success of any of this is debatable, there is one organization in Douglas County that lets those being fought for, the children, speak out against drugs through the artistic expression of film. The program of Truth, Lies, and Videotape has been for six years encouraging the youth from Douglas County share their stories, opinions, and thoughts about these issues. Students from any High School and even some middle school students may submit a film or short video on the subject of whatever topic Umpqua Partners (the sponsor of the program,) deems as the subject matter for that year. St af f Wr i t e r Have you ever wondered about where a few of our holiday traditions come from? On Halloween we wear some questionable outfits and kids get loaded up on candy. On Christmas we give out expensive presents to people to celebrate the birth of Jesus. One of the weirdest holiday traditions may be Easter. Commemorated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, to Christians, Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. However, the Bible doesn’t seem to mention a bunny hopping around and laying decorated eggs filled with goodies for children. The origin of this tradition is from Germany. Across the world, the rabbit is widely known as the symbol of new life for their abilities to mass reproduce. Germans, however, were the first to use the rabbit in Easter traditions in the 1500’s. The first edible Easter bunnies, known in Germany as “Oschter Haws,” were made out of pastry and sugar during the early 1800’s. Soon after, the Easter bunny was introduced to America where children believed that it would lay a nest of colored eggs if they were good. That’s when the tradition of hiding eggs came about, because children would build a nest for the Easter bunny and hide it in a secluded place of the house or barn. Sometimes children would even leave carrots for the bunny the same way they leave cookies for Santa Claus at Christmas. In those times, eggs were simply hollowed out and painted. Painted eggs were given as gifts to families, children, and neighbors. Some time in the mid to late 1800’s, plastic eggs were introduced and filled with candy for children in woven baskets instead of nests. Another source of the Easter Bunny comes from Pagan origins. On the day of the Spring Equinox they celebrated their Teutonic goddess of both Spring and fertility. Coincidentally, her name was Eastre and in paintings and writings of her she was always portrayed having a rabbit in her arms. During this celebration it is said that people painted eggs bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring. They even had egg rolling contests and gave out eggs as gifts. It goes to show that even some of the strangest traditions on our holidays come from somewhere and have meaning relating to them. Now, I just wonder why a fat man in a red suit, on a sleigh driven by reindeer, gives me presents on Jesus’ birthday... Cliques: the truth Jessica B. St af f Wr i t e r Walking through the halls of Roseburg High School, you will notice two things about the students. One, there’s a whole lot of them! Two, there are so many different types of people that attend this school. There are the jocks, emos, preps, girl jocks, promiscuous girls, stoners, gothics, geeks, drama nerds, teachers’ pets, anime fanatics, band geeks, skaters, hicks, and the artists. There are so many cliques at our high school that it is a wonder that we don’t have controversies everywhere we turn. People in general tend to clump together with other people that have similar characteristics as them. It is common for people to take to others that remind them of themselves in some way, because of clothes, the way you wear your make-up, or even the music you like listening to. When you are put into a crowd full of people you don’t know, you will naturally bring yourself closer to someone that shares interests with you. They might be dressed in the same way you are or have their hair is in the same style. Or you might even talk to someone that you don’t know just because they’re the same height as you. If you are in a clique, there might be some people that only want you to talk to the people inside your group. Venturing out or bringing an outsider into your group could result in one of your friends being angry with you. Most of the time, until a person actually gets to know someone from a different clique, they don’t like the person just because their friends don’t like them. A jock might find that a hick is really interesting and fun to hang out with but would never know because one of his friends has a tiff with the hick. RHS tries to do a good job of including every kind of person in the activities put on. At the dances the DJ’s seem to do a good job of playing different genres of music without offending anyone. The assemblies we have, especially the recent Arts Assembly, show the different characteristics of all the students at RHS. Even the classes that are available to us students appeal to certain interests depending on what type of person you are. If you really enjoy playing an instrument, there is a variety of different band classes that you can take. Artists can take fine arts or clay, and the drama classes are available for anyone wanting to learn to be someone else. Cliques can be harmful, but for the most part they allow students of so many interests to have someone they can really call a friend. RHS wants everyone to feel like they belong and so they make it possible to give everyone the opportunity to be themselves and find other people that are just like them. Don’t worry about people not liking you, there are people all around you that want to talk to you and get to know you better. page 11 Entertainment 5/6/09 How interests relate to careers Jasmin V. Water, exercise, caterpillars are things that one would not normally refer to as being allergic to, all but a small few. There are a few extremely weird and rare allergies that you might never expect. It is something you use, drink, or play with everyday. It covers about 70 percent of the earth. Aquagenic Urticaria is the extremely rare allergy of water. Michaela Dutton, 21, said she broke out in a red rash and white blisters after she took a bath about a week after her son was born three years ago. Although she ignored the reactions at first, her symptoms worsened and she went to see a doctor and a dermatologist who told her she had a water allergy. People with Aquagenic Urticaria produce histamine from mast cells in the skin which causes redness, rashes, and hives if they touch water. Dutton’s sensitivity is such that she can only bathe for about 10 seconds each week and cannot drink water, juice, tea or coffee, opting for diet cola instead. Hershey’s, Nestle, and Willy Wonka himself would have a fit if this allergy got out; the allergy of chocolate is also extremely rare. When Stefania Paciocco noticed that whenever her son ate a chocolate bar or cookie he would scratch at his throat she took him to the doctor. Paciocco suspected her son was allergic to chocolate, but the boy’s doctor did not initially believe it. However, after some persistence by Paciocco, a skin test and a food challenge showed Gabriele, indeed, had the allergy. “I was shocked because I love chocolate,” said Paciocco. “And I felt bad. He can’t have a chocolate bar?” Working out and exercising is never really a whole lot of fun, but for those with exercise-induced anaphylaxis, it could lead to death. “They have all of the manifestations one would have if you had an acute allergic reaction to peanuts,” explained Dr. Thomas Casale, chief of allergy and immunology at Creighton University. Most often reported with running or jogging, the exercise-allergic person might get hives, swelling, trouble breathing, low blood pressure, itching, nausea, a headache or wheezing. The students that do the producing come up with the things that are put into the Orange R, using ideas conceptualized during thought-provoking brainstorming sessions, led by our charismatic editor-in-chief, Matt Moll. Although these ideas are evaluated by people involved in Orange R, most of them aren’t known beyond the walls of Miss Smith’s classroom until after the paper has been distributed to the rest of the student body. That process creates a slight problem. With no input from a majority of RHS, we put in whatever sounds interesting to us. Jurgis finds a job working at a socialist-run hotel and reunites with a past friend. At the very end, Jurgis attends a socialist rally where the speaker sums up Jurgis’ new beliefs that if more people convert to socialism, then “Chicago will be ours.” It is interesting that Sinclair uses the title The Jungle as a metaphor for people trying to live not in the wild, but in a capitalist society. He suggests that those who attempt to succeed through capitalist means are not “the fittest” but instead are the most corrupt. His novel helped persuade his readers that the mainstream American political parties offered little means for progressive change. be ignored by Godzilla. Battlestar Galactica Finally after over five years, Sci-Fi’s highest rated show has come to an end. With the last episode of Battlestar Galactica airing March 20, the space battles and crazy futuristic robots are no more. Though the last episode was a 2hour epic masterpiece, it has, of c o u r s e left some with a bad taste in their mouth and outright angered others. Coming into the finale, Battlestar Galactica, like its Sci-Fi cousin, Lost, had many unanswered questions that many viewed wouldn’t and couldn’t be answered in the short 2-hour finale. In the end, many were right and BSG didn’t deliver on the questions. With many leaving comments like, “A hit and a miss, actionpacked story with a plot, but lacking explanations” and “I loved it, but I felt let down by the explanations.” Of course, a show with a runtime of over five years, any ending would upset people in some way, even the creator Ron Moore said, “People are going to be pissed.” In this case, the BSG team let the ball drop on explanations. Despite the lack of explanations, BSG more than delivered on action packed robot- on-robot-on-human-onspaceship battles. The first hour of the 2-hour finale was a huge battle between the Battlestar Galactica and the Cylon (Robot) home world. In the end, the creators of BSG made it into a kind of Angels and Demons t h e o l o g y, turning s o m e characters into objects that no one would have expected. R o n M o o r e , had this to say to the fans that were a bit Provided by internet upset over BSG promo poster the ending and how they turned their beloved characters around. “We never tried to name exactly what the head characters were, we never looked at them as angels or demons. They seemed to periodically say good things or evil things, to save people or to damn people. There was a sense that they worked in the service of something else... that was guiding and helping, sometimes obstructing, sometimes tempting. The idea at the end was that whatever they’re in service of is eternal and continues, and whatever they are, they too are still around, with all of us who are the children of Hera. They continue to walk among us and watch.” However you felt about the finale, Battlestar Galactica had five strong years of actionpacked programs that intrigued the viewers from start to finish. grades, make transcripts and send them to colleges, I also keep track of student records, and a variety of other jobs.” In a corner of the Counseling Center is the School Psychologist, Connie Ruf, “(My job is) to work with school staff, students, and parents supporting improvement in academics and behavior, our work focuses on prevention and intervention,” Ruf adds, “… A typical day may include meeting with students and school staff, conducting assessments, and analyzing data…It’s never boring, I’m always learning in it and I really enjoy getting to work with all the different people in schools and families.” If one were to migrate next door, you would find Sam Moore, the Drug Prevention Coordinator. Moore has been working for the Douglas County School District for two years. “Part of the time I work with prevention teams at both middle schools, seventh and eighth graders, in which we do little prevention campaigns like the dangers of smoking, marijuana, and alcohol. I also work with students who have drug and alcohol issues or citations, helping them through the referral process to access treatment services,” states Moore. So next time you use the restroom, get a hot lunch, receive an A on your paper, or just go to school, think of the people who made this possible. Jadon M. Whether it is giving them knowledge, nutritious food, or just cleaning up after them. Yes, there are many employees here to help us become better citizens.
