RHS Alumni (1930) - Ed Danowski,
referred to affectionately by his
classmates and friends as “Big Ed,”
was recently featured as a member of
Newsday’s pre-1960 all-time Long
Island football team: “A Team for the
Ages”.

The father of former Hofstra lacrosse
coach John (now at Duke) and
grandfather of Hofstra lacrosse star
Matt was Suffolk County’s first great
athlete. He was a three-sport AllSuffolk star for the Blue Waves. The
speedy halfback was a two-time AllAmerican at Fordham before joining
the New York Giants. He was named
to the all-NFL team twice and led
the Giants to two NFL titles. In the
1934 NFL championship game, also
known as the “Sneakers” game,
30-13 win over the Bears. After the
pros, he came back to his Long Island
roots, where he coached high school
football for many years.
RHS ALUMNI
Michael Owen, Blue Wave Star of the
Rutgers trophy 2003 football season,
completed his senior season as a
captain for the Syracuse Orangemen.
Michael is hoping to be drafted into
the NFL!
Ellen Dougherty ran for Villanova
University where she competed in Big
East Championships for cross-country,
indoor and outdoor track. She was on
a Big East champion 4x800 indoor
team in 2007 as well as a conference
champion 4x800 outdoor team in
2006. Dougherty's personal-best times
are listed as 2:01.86 in the 800,
2:50.99 in the 1,000, 4:26.03 in the
1,500 and 4:51.01 in the mile.
