RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Principal's Message August 2016 Robert W. Blair, Principal _________________________________________________________________________________________ August 1, 2016 VOLUME 6, ISSUE 1 53101010 10 Dear Parents and Students, I hope that each of you are having an enjoyable summer and you are looking forward to beginning another school year. Our faculty and staff look forward to working with each family to make 2016-2017 a great school year. As your principal, I want RHS to be a safe haven for all students and be a place where students are excited to learn. We are truly honored to have your student with us each day and vow to provide them with the best high school experience possible. You will find in this newsletter some very important information to begin the school year. Please do not hesitate to call the school with any questions you may have. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff at RHS, let me say that we are eager to work with each and every one of your students this year and our goal is for each student to have a positive experience at RHS. As you will see in this newsletter, we have scheduled specific enrollment days and times for each incoming high school class. If these dates and times don’t work into your schedule, please call the RHS Office to schedule an alternate time between August 1222. In addition, in the event that you have more than one high school student to enroll, we will allow families to enroll all high school students at the same time. We have worked very hard to provide students with a broad selection of course offerings on our master class schedule. Parents and students are reminded that students are required to enroll in classes contained on our master class schedule. The only two exceptions to that are Impact classes that are designed for students who need additional support or credit recovery to insure academic success. Students will only be admitted to Impact classes with approval from the principal and counselor. We have three new staff members who are new to Riverside High School. We welcome: Marilyn Lance, Virtual School Program Director Marlin Roach, Math Teacher Shelly Vertin, Guidance Counselor I thank you in advance for all of your support this year. If we have not yet had the opportunity to meet, please stop by my office any time. RHS is your home too! As always, please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or your student. Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! Again, if you have any questions, please call the RHS Office at 785-989-4426. Sincerely, Robert W. We encourage all parents and students to read and be familiar with the school policies and procedures contained in the Riverside Student Handbook. The handbook can be accessed from the school website and students will be given a hardcopy the first day of school. We are hopeful that everyone has a great 2016-2017! RHS School Hours, 2016-2017 7:55 am – 3:15 pm Eligibility Rule-Extra Curricular Activities You must be in attendance the entire school day unless exempt absence (school activity) or a medical exemption or family emergency with proper documentation approved by the principal to be eligible to participate or attend. This includes both practices and games. It’s a New Beginning! The start of a new academic year means its time for New School Year resolutions. Here are a few to help get school off to the best start possible: 1. It’s easier to keep up than catch up. Keep up with your class work, keep up with your studying, keep up with important dates, keep up with your grades. If you find yourself falling behind or getting confused, please talk with your teachers to get some help to be able to keep up. 2. Take time to be organized. 3. Remember, the most important book to read is your SSR book or the most recent book your English teacher assigned you to read. 4. Do exactly what your teachers ask in their assignments. 5. Start exploring your post-secondary options so you know how to plan your high school career. 6. Put your education first, other activities second. 7. Get involved. 8. Make friends. 9. No matter what, be true to yourself. If the people around you are pressuring you to do something you are uncertain about or really don’t want to do, please don’t give in. You know what is right and what is wrong, so follow your instincts – they’re usually right. *All RHS students participating in fall sports must have a current physical form (KSHSAA form only) on file in the RHS office dated after May 1, 2016 and signed by a health care provider (MD, DO, DC, PA-C, APRN). In addition, the parent and student are required to sign as well. Students will not be allowed to practice or compete unless this form is completed and submitted to RHS.
