T he lessons we learn...
The wagon wheels in the cover photo line
the parking lot of the old dance hall off 306.
They should stir a few memories for folks who
have been around here a while. I’m amazed at
the number of times I drove so near the dance
hall without noticing it was there. Gazing at the
aging building, it’s hard not to imagine the dancers of days gone
by, the lovers lost and friendships made.
Because March is Texas History Month, the Library chooses
a book about Texas heritage for it’s Canyon Lake READS program; members of the community all read it at the same time. This
year’s,Windows to Heaven, is about the 1900 hurricane that devastated Galveston. With over 5,000 lives lost, the storm is the greatest natural disaster in US history. Twelve events planned at TPML
during the month culminate to study it’s relevance to Canyon Lake
today. Lessons we learn, or don’t learn, from history affects our
future sometimes for good, sometimes bad.
While on the subject of Texas history, let me share an update
on a Native Texan that many of you already know. My son Dalton
handled sales (and much more) for the Canyon Lake Views for two
years. He is a familiar face to Canyon Lake businesses who I know
all wish him well. By the end of this month, he will marry his
sweetheart, Alexandra, in Fischer Hall; and they are both noticeably excited about the event.
I’m proud to announce that Dalton is the new General Manager and Editor of the Wimberley View. Residents and businesses
in Wimberley are pleased he is at the helm of their local newspaper
as well. The two-week-old purchase of the newspaper by the San
Marcos Record eased the way. No, he didn’t follow in my footsteps; he has been leaps and bounds ahead for quite a long time.
Our Canyon Lake Community Profile is also a Native Texan.
Susan Bogle has been instrumental in too many community projects to list. Frequently in a leadership role for many projects, she is
hard at work on almost all. Excelling in spirit far more than drudgery of service, winning the Chamber’s Community Spirit award
fits her well. Susan’s attitude serves to inspire us all.
Lessons learned from good examples like Susan sure beats
learning from lots of old mistakes.

Heritage MuseuM
of the Texas Hill Country
announces
2014
Dinosaur Day
by Bobby Beddoe, Director
On Sunday, April 6th, make plans to attend one of the major
attractions of Comal County – the annual Dinosaur Day at the
Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country. It’s a multi-acre
layout located midway between Startzville and Sattler on FM
2673. So rouse yourselves early, hop in the SUV and bring
the kids and grandkids and join in on the festivities. The gates
open at noon and close at 5:00 pm.
A special attraction this year will be “Dinosaur George”
Blasing in person. He is a self-taught paleontologist and
animal behaviorist with more than 35 years of study and
research. Blasing is a public speaker, writer and television
personality who has performed live to over 2 million people
and has lectured in over 2,800 museums, schools and public
events. He is the writer, co-creator and host of Jurassic Fight
Club on the History Channel. Dinosaur George has spent over
18 years teaching elementary, intermediate and middle school
students about the amazing creatures that once ruled our
planet. Dinosaur George will give four presentations during
the afternoon at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 pm.
Please check-in at the entrance counter. On your way
back from the Dinosaur Track Tour, check out the fossil
display, Canyon Lake Dam history and display, showcases
of the more than 500 Indian artifacts mostly found right
here in the Hill Country – exhibits like you won’t find
anywhere else. You also might enjoy taking a leisurely stroll
through the two gardens on the grounds and view old farm
machinery reminiscent of pioneer days in Comal County.
Have lunch with us that includes “dinosaur dogs” and
homemade cookies. There will be a whole host of experienced
members and professionals that are eager to share their
knowledge of geology. Bring your fossils and rocks for
identification. A special children’s section will have activities
just for them. Watch a demo on how rough lapidary Comal
County rocks can be cut and polished into to gem quality.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children aged 5 to 12
years. Children four or under are free.
For more details, call the museum at 830-899-4542.

Eggs & Art: The Art of Creating
by Sue Sweat
Eggs and art? An unexpected pairing. Uncommon, unconventional but also novel, imaginative, an original one-and-only idea unlike anywhere else. Because the egg sculptures to be designed by local artists represent dinosaur eggs, they are uniquely ‘Canyon Lake.’
The Chamber’s Community Spirit award, as its name suggests
singles out one individual who outshines the rest. Susan Bogle was a
popular favorite among a sizable group of worthy members who are
also friends. Her volunteerism is widely spread, and her enthusiasm
infectious because her passion is real. Quick to volunteer, Susan can
expedite larger projects but often tackles small ones alone.
A recent project helps Richard Ferrell, the Chamber’s Executive
Director, with his goal to make Canyon Lake a year round tourism destination. A joint mission of several groups plans to promote
the visual, written and performing arts locally to highlight existing
talent that needs to be pulled to the forefront. Similar to Austin’s
campaign of painted guitars to adorn downtown sidewalks, the
EGG-Stravaganza of Art promotes dinosaur tracks at the Heritage
Museum. Top civic-minded businesses might commission a local
artist for an egg sculpture in any theme they choose. The first by
Sherry Ganzle has been unveiled at the library. Rio Raft Resort could
be the second (maybe it will be a giant egg, well-shaped to sit in a
tube fishing). Stay tuned.
In awe of the energy Susan brings to the Library, Library Director Roxanna Deane submitted this nomination for the Spirit Award:
“Susan gives new meaning to the word ‘active’ ... For [those of us who
work] with her, Susan Bogle is the embodiment of Community Spirit.
Not content with just belonging to a group, she works tirelessly to further each institution’s mission and as a result has made a noticeable
difference in this community ... To her extraordinary work at the library, she brings creativity, expertise, time, and the ability to recruit
and organize volunteers to library projects. Her willingness to physically work hard hour after hour amazes us all. As a result, a butterfly
garden and nature trail are underway; an observatory is on the library
grounds. Almost 150 people attended the first Star Party in October.
Susan would say that many hands have contributed... however, without her, it’s likely these projects would still be on the drawing board.
Susan is active with CASA, CRRC, the Gorge Preservation Society,
the Lindheimer Chapter of the Master Naturalist, the Pilot Club and
TPML. Routinely serving in leadership roles..., she’s currently a member of the Library Board of Trustees.” But there’s more.
Known for “running with an idea,” she pulls resources together,
and ‘gits ‘er done.’ When she sees she’s needed, she goes and she does.
Because she was involved in the early development of the Gorge,
implemented under the guidance and technical resources of GBRA,
Susan learned why strategic planning is critical to reach long term
goals and the basics of ‘how.’ Susan used that knowledge and experience when drafted to help with the Heritage Museum’s 5-year plan.
Susan is proud of her position as a Director on the GVTC Board
(Dist. IV), a memberowned non-profit co-op,
solid in operations and
dedicated to good citiSusan and the first Dinosaur Egg sculpture called
zenry inside the compa- “Thesaurus,”a dinosaur who knows a World of Words.
ny and out through the generous employee-run GVTC Foundation.
At TPML, she says the library crew also nurtures community interaction beyond the books, but it’s the reciprocal nature of the community reaching ‘back’ that’s amazing. “We [she] sent out our list of
needs for the Butterfly Garden and things started coming in.”
‘Where Books are Only The Beginning …’ means the library offers
so much more to learn. Susan said that TPML is “a great neighbor
to the community... but it’s more. It’s the heart of the Community. It’s
comfortable like the family living room. It’s multi-generational, too;
grandparents bring grandkids to Astronomy Night. Residents bring
visiting family to show off our beautiful facility. We made an Art
Walk brochure to guide visitors to the many works of art here.”
As a Gorge Tour Guide and “Friend of the Library,” the group that
raises funds for special library projects, Susan will be pulling double
duty this month. The Friend’s “Canyon Lake READS” program features “Windows of Heaven,” a book about the 1900 hurricane that
devastated Galveston. The program culminates with a Guided Tour of
The Gorge – carved by of the power of water, caused by unpredictable
weather and a stark validation of the wisdom to prepare.
A Master Naturalist to her core, Susan is one of 27 in the entire
state with over 6,000 volunteer hours. She volunteers at Cibolo Nature Center, the Native Plant Society, the Mesquite Wildlife Habitat
and is Garden Club Treasurer. She values what her mother gave her
by instilling a great love of the outdoors for all it has given her back.
Susan calls herself “a professional volunteer,” but why more than
fulltime on some days? “For selfish reasons,” she says. “It sounds cliché but I really do get back so much more than I give. I’ve learned a
lot, about butterflies, fossils, all kinds of things that I wouldn’t have
otherwise...Sure, I could make a beautiful butterfly garden at home –
that no one would see. Here I can watch a child see her first butterfly.”
“It really does ‘take a village,’ she continued. “We share all the
tasks, and enjoy the project together once it gets done.” She pauses,
“My philosophy is that we all generally work to afford life, but for me,
I volunteer because it gives me a life” – a full life. “You have no idea
how much I enjoy this.”
... Oh, but it shows. As Susan exudes a natural enthusiasm for any
project she tackles, she is invigorated. Be warned: Her serene energy
is as contagious as her smile.
Step up and join her. As you discover the many lives you impact,
you may realize how alive you feel and, like Susan, discover the greatest impact you have made is creating a life of your own.
And the unlikely pair of eggs and art have grown closer. Like Susan, an egg is busy creating life, and creating is what brings art to life.
Susan and Jack, her husband of 43 years, moved to Canyon Lake from Dallas in 2001. She says joining the Master Naturalists and the Pilot
Club when she arrived is what rooted her to the community. To reach Susan, call Tye Preston Memorial Library at 830-964-3744.

A threat worth considering
Part 1: An introduction to
Oak Wilt
by Robert Elwood
As you pull into the driveway, the world
fades away and the sanctuary of your home
returns. It is a sanctuary nestled amongst the
majestic beauty of your trees.
Trees provide so much and require so little from us. The air is
cleaner and fresher because they breathe. Trees provide shade and
moisture when the relentless Central Texas sun beats down. During
storms, they protect your home from wind and rain. And when the
work-a-day challenges weigh heavy, the tree’s inhabitants reassure
you of an ancient cycle of life far beyond worldly events. Let’s also
not forget that trees contribute significantly to the value of your
home and can be worth several thousand dollars apiece.
Consider for a moment what your sanctuary would be like without trees. If the majority of trees in your yard are of the oak species, loss of those trees is a possibility you are facing in the coming
years. Oak Wilt is considered one of the three most devastating
tree diseases in North America today and it’s spreading through the
Texas Hill Country. So if you have oak trees on your property, Oak
Wilt is a threat worth considering.
Having accurate knowledge about the Oak Wilt epidemic will
go far in defending your trees. During the next six months, this
column will present an overview of the Oak Wilt epidemic, providing truths you need to know in lieu of inaccurate rumors that
are spreading even faster than Oak Wilt itself. Knowing Oak Wilt
facts, especially regarding prevention and warning signs, could be
the difference that saves your oaks while others are lost in the epidemic.
Next month, we’ll explore the history and current scope of Oak
Wilt in North America including specifics of how the disease is
manifesting in Texas. Subsequent columns will discuss characteristics of the disease, how it’s transmitted, prevention measures,
signs and symptoms of an infected tree, and preventing disease
spread, as well as a reference list of valuable information resources
including national and state level arbor culture experts, universities, and tree care professionals who have made Oak Wilt education a priority during this critical time. Together we can hopefully
minimize further damage from this devastating epidemic and save
our Texas treasure of beautiful Oaks.

File homestead
exemptions now
by Kathy Martinez
Did you purchase a home last year? If you
haven’t applied for your homestead exemption, now is the time to apply and save some
of your hard earned money with a nice sized
tax ‘credit!’
Applying for your property tax exemptions is one of the simplest ways reduce that pesky property tax bill. The Texas Legislature has provided numerous property tax exemptions for Texas
taxpayers: exemptions for homestead, over 65 homestead, disabled
homestead, disabled veterans among others.
Now is the time to apply for these exemptions. A home owner
must file the completed application with all required documentation beginning January 1 and no later than April 30 of the year for
which you are requesting an exemption. If you qualify for the age
65 or older, or disabled persons exemption, you must apply for
the exemption no later than the first anniversary of the date you
qualify for the exemption.
The process has been made very simple. Applications for exemptions can be found online at www.comalad.org. Simply go to
the Comal County site, click “Forms;” a menu of forms will pop
up and the first two forms on the list are homestead exemption applications or, simply go in and pick up an application. Easy!
Please note that when filing a Homestead Exemption the property must be your principle/primary residence. Also the application
cannot be approved for homestead exemption unless a copy of the
applicant’s driver’s license is submitted with the homestead application, and the address on the driver’s license matches the address
of the homestead exemption for which the applicant is applying.

It’s time!
by Terry Schroller
I don’t remember ever being this cold for
this long. Hopefully, by the time you guys
are reading this, we’ll all be removing at
least one layer of clothing. The weather will
definitely be warming up soon. I know this,
because we are getting beach apparel catalogs with the trim and tan
models posing on exotic beaches, wearing things if real people wore
would be banned for indecent exposure.
So that means we have to prepare. Prepare ourselves physically
for fun in the sun and our nest for our annual visitors. In-laws, out of
school-ers, and vacationing friends I can’t help you with. Other annual visitors, commonly referred to as BUGS, I can help you with.
Inside, move your winter stuff out. Firewood should be taken
outside and stored about 18” off the ground and away from the
house. Store any wool, fur trimmed or lined clothing in air tight
containers. Use air tight containers for all left over pasta, rice, flour,
oatmeal and other baking goods. Freeze them for 72 hours and then
place into containers. Clean around windows and doors, checking
for areas that need repair like air gaps or torn screens. After your
two-legged visitors leave, check the bedding and storage areas they
used because there’s no telling where they or their luggage have
been before they came to mooch off of you! It’s also a good time to
attack the garage and utility room, as most rodent infestations start
there. I know it seems impossible, but I found out they make these
new-fangled things called shelves and cabinets! They are perfect for
organizing stuff you just can’t bear to part with ever!
Outside, because we want to commune with nature and tell our
California friends we’re “green,” things get complicated. All you
have to do, folks, is push nature back a small distance from your
box. Clean the gutters, rake up leaves, trim trees and shrubs away,
drain any standing water, then caulk, seal and that’s it. Trim, clean,
and seal – simple!
Ok, get up, get started. It’s time!

Make-readys for rentals
by Mark Hannah
This month I’m going to discuss what is
commonly referred to as a “make-ready.” This
is a real estate term that refers to the process
of getting a property ready for use or occupancy. With lease/rentals, which is what I’ll
be discussing, it refers to making the property
ready for re-leasing when it becomes vacant, although the service
applies if you want to get the property ready for resale as well.
Sometimes rentals are managed by property managers; sometimes an owner may choose to manage their property. If you manage a property yourself, you need to know what steps are required
after the home is vacated. First, complete a detailed inspection of the property so you
know items that have been damaged or need repair. A comprehensive checklist is recommended so no detail is overlooked.
Over time, some items may require attention due to common
wear and tear that is expected with regular use and should not be
considered “damage by tenant.” Worn carpet in a high traffic area
would fall in this category.
Next, decide what cosmetic updates will be needed. These
items could include painting, or replacing dated carpet or aged
window coverings to modernizing appliances, etc.
After you have a good grasp of tasks you want done, it’s a good
idea to schedule a meeting with a professional at the property to
discuss a plan of action. That allows both to see exactly what tasks
are being considered and alternatives that might be possible. That
extra set of eyes comes in handy more often than you might think.
If you prefer a certain paint color and brand for easier touch up
between short term tenants, be sure to list it and any other specific
materials or brands you require. Clarifications that may affect the
estimate avoid misunderstandings later. Then schedule the job.
As the owner of a rental property, you want your rental to be
in the best condition possible within your budget. When the job
is complete, I recommend you meet for a walk through together
to ensure the work is complete as agreed. With the property now
ready for rent, you can start generating income again.
Owner-managers may request a routine make-ready and trust a
professional to make recommendations once a relationship is established. A skilled professional can help with a variety of repairs
as well as regular maintenance to help keep your investment secure
and make your job easier too. Confirm tenants know to contact you
if new repairs arise so small things don’t become big issues.
Mark “Hank” Hannah, a Canyon Lake area resident for over
12 years, is the owner/operator of Handy Hank, a professional
handyman service who is on time and offers a straight price – your
satisfaction is his main concern. Services include pressure washing, painting, general home maintenance and repairs, and more.

While nothing is certain in business, one thing
is almost assured: The summer will bring change.
For some businesses, summer is their busy season; for others, it is business as usual. But whatever the case, almost every business should look at summer as a
special time of year and plan accordingly.
Staffing: We have all been there – you walk into a business that
failed to staff accordingly, and everything takes too long. What
should take a couple of minutes to pay for something now takes ten
or fifteen. It is a missed opportunity for that business: Dazzle the
customers with great service and they will be impressed and come
back time and again. But miss the mark, and customers are unlikely
to return.
Take advantage of summer events: The plethora of outdoor activities, BBQ’s and other similar events is a huge opportunity for many
businesses. If you have a business that lends itself to participating
at these sorts of events, this may be for you. But even if your business is not the type that you would usually think of at one of these
events, your business can still take advantage of the good feelings
that comes from being associated with such an event by advertising
or being a sponsor. If you need help, the Chamber has a large list of
local events and would be happy to point you in the right direction.
Partner up: Find another business or organization that you could
partner up with to advertise. By pooling your money you can get a
much bigger ad then you might have thought possible. The Canyon
Lake Area Chambers of Commerce is always looking for new and
more effective ways to advertise our area. Why not stop by and see
if your business and others could combine forces?
There’s no question that the people working at our local businesses are working very hard and a lot of them have very little time
for anything else. Even with that said, I don’t know of anyone who
couldn’t use a little help, have a little more money to advertise, or
wouldn’t want more people in their business. By working a little
smarter and joining forces, maybe we can attract more people to our
area and share in the economic gain.
Richard Ferrell is the Executive Director of the Canyon Lake Area
Chamber at 3934 FM 2673. For more information, call 830-9642223 or toll free 800-528-2104 or visit CanyonLakeChamber.com

High fructose corn syrup,
heart disease, diabetes,
obesity ... and your liver
We Deliver!

c: 830-743-2044
by VJ Tiller
Fructose, a kind of sugar found in fruits
and vegetables and honey, is thought to be a
healthier alternative to sucrose. Researchers
have gradually changed their minds about the health effects of this
substance, especially in its most widely used form, high fructose
corn syrup (HFCS).
HFCS is made from a group of corn syrups that have undergone
enzymatic processing to convert some of its glucose into fructose. The processing enhances the sweetness of the end product;
HFCS is 2.3 times sweeter than glucose. It’s also less expensive
than other sweeteners. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey, in 1980 consumption of HFCS was 37 grams per day, or
8% of caloric intake. By 1990, people were consuming an average
of 55 grams of HFCS per day, or 10.2% of caloric intake. That’s
way too much highly refined sugar in our diets!
Today, two-thirds of the adult US population is overweight, and
more than one-third is clinically obese. The obesity epidemic began to show itself in the 1970s which is the same time the food
industry began using HFCS in soda and other processed foods,
including breads, pastas, and cereals.
Heart disease and diabetes
Many studies have correlated the intake of HFCS with the development of cardiovascular disease. In fact, dietary fructose has
been shown to elevate triglyceride levels, especially after ingesting
large quantities of HFCS. One study found that women who drink
two or more servings of sweetened beverages per day had an increased risk of heart disease by 35%.
Dr. Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health (February 2012 Edition) continues to talk about how HFCS will damage your liver. The soft drink industry has tried to convince us there is no difference between HFCS and other sweeteners such as sucrose and
glucose – but after analyzing the way that the body metabolizes
HFCS, it is conclusive that a large load of fructose is being delivered to the liver. Fructose is converted into fatty acids in the
liver, which can cause elevated triglycerides and lead to fatty liver
disease. Read the labels before you buy. Villa Jean Tiller has a BS in Behavioral Science and a Masters of
Divinity Degree. She practices whole body health daily combining
socialization, exercise, good nutrition, environment, and spirituality and will help you with a suitable exercise program, good nutrition plan and a healthy outlook. For information, stop by or call

New and effective weight
loss diet for your pets
by Ryan Bullock, DVM
Studies show that 82% of American pets
are overweight, and obesity can lead to a
myriad of health problems including endocrine, liver, and cardiovascular disease.
It also leads to more severe, debilitating arthritis, lethargy,
poor hair coat and skin quality, as well as making pets more
susceptible to orthopedic injuries such as ACL knee ligament
tears and back injuries. Obese pets will also hurt their owner’s pocket books by you having to pay for all of these health
problems! Overall, pet obesity is a serious disease that will almost certainly shorten your pet’s life expectancy and decrease
their overall quality of life.
So, what can we do about it? Diet, diet, diet! Fortunately,
Hill’s has come out with a great new weight loss diet called
“Hill’s Metabolic.” What makes this diet different and more
effective than other weight loss diets is that it naturally increases your pet’s metabolism which allows them to burn
more calories each day without any added activity. Hill’s
invested a lot of time and money to research which natural
dietary ingredients can cause good fat-burning genes to express themselves more strongly, and bad fat-gaining genes to
express themselves less. This “synergistic blend of nutrients”
includes things like beta carotene, linoleic acid, myristic acid
and others that naturally cause your pet to burn more calories. The good news is that even if your pet does get into the
other dog’s food or gets unauthorized treats from family
members, they should still lose weight because they will have
a higher metabolism. Research backs up this product as well:
a study done on 314 pets that were fed this diet at home by
their owners showed that 88% lost weight! We have been using this diet for about a year and every pet that I have put on
it has lost weight, including my in-law’s dog Jack, so I am
very impressed!
You’ll be amazed at the new found energy your pet has
once they shed those extra pounds. Plus, you’ll also be able to
enjoy their company for many more years by avoiding all of
those health problems! For more information, ask your veterinarian and check out www.hillspet.com. Ryan Bullock, DVM and Keith Leakey, DVM, are the owners of
Canyon Animal Clinic and Canyon City Animal Hospital, full
service primary care veterinary hospitals. Jeff Quinn, DVM,
and Stephanie Horstmann, DVM, complete the veterinarian
staff. For information, call 830-964-3696 at 1834 FM 2673 in

The methamphetamine problem at Canyon Lake, like virtually all communities has
reached epidemic levels. It’s not just here as
I am trying criminal defense cases in Comal,
Hayes, Bexar, Kimble, McCulloch, Llano, San Saba, and Runnels Counties. ‘Meth’ is highly addictive and is a Penalty Group
1 possession and distribution crime with very severe penalties.
People can quickly become addicted, and the withdrawal is
horrible. Smoking and shooting meth is ruining the lives of the
young as well as the old. Thankfully, programs such as the Drug
Challenge Court afford the opportunity to help people get well
and avoid jail time. In addition, the penalties associated with
drug use can be greatly reduced as many times the perpetrator
can avoid conviction, if they are allowed into intense rehab programs that are more restrictive than your standard probation.
The alternative many times is serious jail and prison time.
Although the accused are afforded all civil rights available to
anyone accused of a crime, I find myself in the position of de1/8 fending

Stay ahead of water issues
by Randy Lawrence
When building or remodeling a home,
there are so many details to track that it can
be overwhelming. Few things are more frustrating than finishing a major construction
project only to find out that one small omission early on is
going to cost you much more later. One commonly neglected
item is simple preparation for the installation of water treat8th page
$125/mo
ment equipment. This pre-plumbing
is @
referred
to as a “softener loop.”
The purpose for a loop is to separate the inside water from
that used outside for irrigation, so that only the water entering
the house is treated. The loop consists of several components
which will accommodate the equipment necessary for your
water problems, whether the equipment is installed now or
later.
In most cases, a loop will be located in a garage, closet,
or mechanical room. There should be a water line exiting the
wall then turning 180 degrees before re-entering the wall.
This will provide the inlet and outlet lines for the softener
or filter. There should also be a drain which will handle the
water discharged during a regeneration cycle; this line should
be connected to the drain plumbing if possible, or routed to a
separate location if not. If there is a concern about this water
entering the septic tank, a french drain or gravel pit should
be considered. If your water treatment equipment is to be installed in a well enclosure, the house should be fed by two
lines: one for treated water and the other for untreated.
A 110-volt electrical outlet should be placed near the loop
in order to power the water treatment equipment. A standard
GFCI outlet will suffice, but a four-way outlet will ensure that
you have additional plug space for heat lamps or for additional equipment. It’s also a good idea to have this outlet on a
dedicated circuit.
Even if you don’t plan to purchase a water softening system immediately, it will save you a great deal of money and
frustration when you do decide to treat your incoming water. A licensed water treatment specialist can work with your
builder to make certain that all of these components come together smoothly.

Specialists in Hays County (LIC# WT0002693). For more

It obvious that Christianity has deep Jewish roots. The Christian movement arose in
the Hebrew culture, against the backdrop
of Hebrew law and scripture, and Hebrew
Temple worship. It is obvious that Jesus, the
central figure in the Christian faith was a Jew.
Unfortunately, there has been, in the Christian community the
oxymoronic phenomenon of “Christian anti-Semitism.” But there
are those of us in the Christian community who are honored to he
known as Friends of Israel. The Jewish people have the strongest
historical support for having a presence in the land of Israel. The
political rebirth of the State of Israel in 1948, together with the regathering of the Jewish people to the Land from all over the world,
constitutes an amazing example of the miracle of fulfilled Bible
prophecy. Almost every one of the Old Testament prophets spoke
of this great event that would occur just prior to Messiah’s advent
in victory and power. But the secular world never saw it coming!
Along with the empirical factually-attested resurrection of Christ,
the regathering of Israel is one of God’s great surprises.
We are pleased to host Mr. John Kanter as our guest minister
on April 13. During the Sunday morning service, he will preach
on the subject “Be Prepared.” Sunday evening, Mr. Kanter will
lead us in an observance of the ancient Passover Seder. He is well
equipped to do this as he is a Hebrew Christian.
We look forward to a great time of glorifying the person of
Jesus: the Incarnation of Deity, the Jewish Messiah and the Savior
of all who will believe.
Come and join us!
Sincerely,
Dr. Franklin D. Watts

The Millionaires
Reading Club
reaches their goal
A Sample of Tomorrow’s Leaders: CLHS Optimist Octagon Club Officers
“With the help of
moms, Friends of the Library, the VFW, Fraternal Order of Canyon Men, Master Naturalists, Wally Schultz, and other volunteers, the Millionaires Reading
Club reached their goal of providing a play area for TPML’s youngest patrons. Three tons of mulch paid for by the Millionaires’ bake
sales makes the area safe for everyone to play.
After reaching that goal, you might think they would be finished
raising money, but the club is already talking about their next bake
sale: They want to start buying new children’s books. Everyone is
quite proud of their accomplishment and their community spirit.”
The staff at TPML calls these kids their “million-dollar friends”
and know that they are the future of the library.
Donations to help the club meet their goal are welcomed; please
specify that your donation is to benefit the Millionaire Reading Club
Fundraiser. For information, call the library at 830-964-3744.

by Mary Alice Bethancourt
“Canyon Lake READS” is a monthlong celebration which affords the opportunity for our community to read the same
book at the same time and, as participants
from last year’s celebration, feel, “WOW –
What an experience!” Numerous activities
throughout the month are planned to support the themes of the book and to unite our
community through the power of reading.
It is particularly relevant that we chose to read the book during
Texas History Month.
“The Windows Of Heaven” by prize-winning Texas author
Ron Rozelle is an historical novel about the 1900 hurricane that
hit Galveston, known as the “Great Storm.” Still considered the
worst natural disaster in US history, it is very much part of our
Texas history.
Events are planned during the month so that we can see what it
was like in 1900 versus what it is like today. How different is our
weather predicting? How differently do we live our lives?
Texas native Ron Rozelle tells a very gripping story of people
who faced a storm like they had never experienced. Many of the
characters actually lived. While staying true to the actual timeline
of weather events as they happened, he tells a very human story.

If this house could talk,
it would dare you to compare
its blazing Internet speeds to your own.
You’d hear words like “killer online gaming”
and “ultimate business tool.” It would brag about
the ultimate technology running through it
— just like thousands of other fiber optic homes
in the Hill Country — all powered by GVTC.
“Cedar Removal Specialists”
So, what would your house say?

There may be lots of
reasons why your dog
needs training
We Can Help!

Are you worried about coming home to torn up
furniture?

Are you unable to walk your dog without a
pinch collar?

Is your dog dragging you around the neighborhood instead of you walking your dog?

Is your dog jumping up to greet people,
including jumping up on your small children?

Does your dog suffer from phobias or
depression?

Is your dog aggressive towards other dogs or
people?

Is your best friend simply too much dog for you
or your family to handle?
