EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
Presented to members and visitors at Balwyn Park on Monday the 07th of July 2008.
th
The Board of Management of the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated presents for adoption the 88 Annual
Report & Associated Statements of accounts for season 2007-08.
In season 2007-08, Balwyn Cricket Club fielded four senior teams in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket
Association (VSDCA) and four junior teams in the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA).
The 1st and 2nd XI’s played in the north south group with both sides narrowly missing finals. The 3rd and 4th
th
th
rd
XI’s played in the North West group, with the 4 XI finishing 5 for the fifth successive season. The 3 XI
were more successful and after finishing the regular season in third position, were able to make the Grand
Final for the fifth time in eight seasons after defeating perennial nemesis Broadmeadows in a low scoring
semi final. Unfortunately a premiership still beckons.
rd
th
It has been a continual source of frustration that our 3 and 4 XI’s find themselves drawn in the North West
group. By any calculation we are located east of Melbourne with more than 70% of membership living either
around Balwyn or east of Balwyn. As I write change however is in the wind and after much lobbying we
presented a formal presentation to the VSDCA incorporating a number of proposals that will be of benefit to
whole competition in reducing the travel burden. In particular I’d like to pay tribute to our President James
Sheehan and Treasurer/Delegate Damian Boland who continually pushed the proposal in meetings with the
VSDCA and Andy Sheehan who also assisted myself in the compilation of the formal proposal.
The arrival of Brendan Joyce as Captain-Coach in 2005-06 has undoubtedly changed the way Balwyn plays
its cricket and how it is perceived throughout the competition. Whilst narrowly missing finals for the second
successive year may be seen to be a disappointing return we continue to compete at all times in a manner
that suggests that with a good run of injuries and continued player development promising times do indeed
lie ahead.
Under Brendan’s stewardship this competitive attitude has also been on display throughout the other three
senior sides. With a structured and enjoyable training base employing a heavy emphasis on preparing to
play winning cricket it was no coincidence that Balwyn was to finish eighth (of 28) in the VSDCA club
championship and have all sides in contention for finals coming in to the final two dayer in late February.
The 1st XI unfortunately finished with a disappointing defeat at the hands of lowly Coburg in a must win final
game to deny them finals action. Unlike the previous season the side was unable to put together a
substantial streak of winning games, never winning more than two in a row. What that also meant was that
successive losses were thin on the ground and as a consequence the push for finals was always on,
particularly in such an even year. It particularly came to life after a high scoring victory against a previously
high flying Malvern side in the final two dayer. Unfortunately that did not follow with the required final day
win.
In an albeit high scoring season the contributions of Peter Harper and Brendan Joyce who scored over 1100
runs between them really stood out. Harper’s haul (615 runs) contained two centuries including 150 vs Kew
which was one run short of equalling the club record score at the level. He was also to fall one short of a
third century in the season opener against Kingston recording his second score of 99 at the club.
In addition to his batting he also captured 17 wickets and 15 catches to underline his immense value to the
side and his undoubted individual talent. Joyce (509 runs) continued his consistent run with the bat
exceeding 500 runs for the third successive season. To underline his consistency he exceeded 35 in nine of
his thirteen innings. To watch him bat, even at training, is to watch a guy who prepares to succeed. Of the
others only Bell and Gleeson exceeded 250 runs and there in lays the challenge for the playing group.
Of the bowlers only new arrival, Ben McLeod exceeded 20 wickets. He did however have able support from
a youngish group of bowlers in Kennon, Michael Tuohey, Janes and Harper who shared nearly 70 wickets
between them. Unfortunately a season ending knee injury to the emerging and physically imposing Alex
st
Young was a blow as he is a difficult player to replicate. Importantly the 1 XI gave debuts to both Mitchell
Carey (15 year old) and Steven Vincent (16 year old) in the hope that over time the fast bowling stocks will
be replenished from within.
The 2nd XI was perhaps the most disappointing story of the four Balwyn senior sides. The season
commenced with a promising four game winning streak (to follow five consecutive victories at the end of the
previous season) but unravelled over time for a variety of reasons. Importantly a direction was taken with
regards personnel at the mid way point and a number of players under 18 were given debuts at the level.
Although some short term pain may have been felt in terms of the sides performances, the longer term
4
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC

benefits will hopefully offset that, particularly given that not one of the younger brigade in Braine, Tsesmelis,
Carey, Weeramantry, Soeny, Vincent, O’Hern and Prakash look out of place at the level. Key performers
during the year with the bat were Looker, Lowrie and Oliver whilst K Gordon, Wilks and Soeny were
prominent with the ball.
There were a few outstanding individual efforts during the year but none better than Guy Looker in making
178 at better than run a minute against Ormond. In Kane Gordon the side was well served by an excellent
leader to complement his outstanding individual contributions at the level. If the younger group of players
can make the most their obvious talents and of the opportunities provided the club will be well served by the
approach taken at this level in years to come.
The 3rd XI continued its winning ways of previous seasons under the leadership of Bill Leropoulos.
Unfortunately this was to culminate in a disappointing Grand Final loss, after a superb victory in the semi
final. Notwithstanding this disappointment the 3rd XI can expect to be well performed given the experienced
nd
squad likely to be available in the years ahead as the profile of the 2 XI alters. As the figures indicate
performances were spread evenly across a number of players and perhaps explains the success of this side
throughout the season. Key performers with the bat were Strachan, Leropoulos and Boland whilst Silvers,
Moloney and Leropolous stood out with the ball.
th
The 4 XI under the leadership of Matthew Wilson again narrowly missed finals. A slow start to the year
through washouts and player depth issues meant that a run of five straight victories leading in to the final
game was still not enough to ensure finals participation. As with previous years there was a large turn over
of players (30) and understandably quality varied. Perversely given the number of players, this side still
played a number of its games short of the eleven players required and not surprisingly suffered in some of
them. In between these problems the side had some excellent wins and continues to provide the platform by
which a number of youngsters gain exposure to senior cricket and the education that comes with this
involvement.
Life member Chris

his medallion (R)
The club fielded an additional junior side this season taking to it to five sides and in some instances found
itself turning some kids away after the season began due to the potential problem of having 15 players in an
age group. The organisation of this vital component of the club was undertaken by Brendan Moore. He gave
this important part of the club much needed structure and with the advent of a junior committee we are well
placed to meet the challenges that lay ahead in managing a transient group of players and parents. To those
parents that were involved in coaching or other match day contributions we welcome your contributions, and
hope that ultimately it will translate in to watching your kids and friends become senior players at Balwyn
Cricket Club.
The RM Hatch Under 15 representative squad was managed by John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr who have
been a perennial presence in the running of this side for a number of years. With preparation and training
commencing in September and a commitment to thoroughly assess the merits of aspirational local juniors
their respective contributions are invaluable. As a club we have adopted the approach of selecting local
players with a view to having them become potential senior players in years to come. Whilst the results were
mixed, the exposure given to those selected over the fortnight in early January should be of benefit in years
to come. Already three of the squad in Alex Tsesmelis, Suraj Prakash and Mitchell Carey have represented
the club at senior level, with Mitchell making his 1st XI debut in the final game of the season which was a
wonderful achievement from a fifteen year old in his first season of senior cricket.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
The clubs financial outcome for 2007-08 was positive and particularly so in light of a number of significant
challenges we as a club faced. Honorary Treasurer Damian Boland has covered this off in some depth in his
separate report and we are indebted not only to his financial acumen, but also his hard work in ensuring all
challenges related to our financial well being are covered off so that our expenditure on cricket related
matters is not compromised. Financially however challenges continue to remain and we as a board are
committed in ensuring that we are well placed to meet them.
In seasons past we have had cause to reflect on our relationship with elements of the VSDCA organisation
with respect to some outcomes concerning our club. Fortunately this appears to be a matter consigned to
history and we are pleased to report that the season was administered in a highly successful fashion and all
matters were dealt with promptly and professionally. In particularly we offer our thanks to the retiring
Secretary Daryl Thiele and wish him well as he steps back. Equally we also offer our congratulations to
VSDCA President Ken Fewster on his recent Order of Australia Medal. The VSDCA should be very pleased
with their Centenary celebrations and associated functions which appeared to be well supported by all clubs.
Finally, and with respect to the VSDCA, we are very well represented by our Club Delegates which was of
immeasurable assistance
Of matters closer to home we again thank the City of Boroondara for their support in facilitating our ability to
play cricket throughout both our senior and junior grades. Be it obtaining grounds for the juniors at short
notice, dealing with flexible fixturing or maintaining the turf wickets by which our facility is often judged, the
Council was a very big assistance. In particular we are thankful for the undertaking of capital works and
ground and pavilion improvements that will be of benefit to all users in the years ahead. We are sure that a
little bit of short term pain during the construction phase will be well worthwhile.
We were deeply saddened at the recent passing of Richard Parsons who had up until as recently as our pre
season tour to Bendigo, been our club umpire and formerly a long serving VSDCA Umpire. Richard and his
partner Celia were regular attendees and supporters of Club functions and were much loved and respected
around the Club. His funeral in May was very well attended by past and present Balwyn players to further
highlight the above.
This season the board has chosen to award Life Membership to Chris Wilks which was presented to Chris
by Mark Gordon on Presentation Night. This is never a decision that is reached lightly and is reflected by the
fact that he is only the 36th Life Member of a club that was first formed in 1921. Chris has been an active
player since 1991 (197 Games) and his time at the club has also seen him spend a decade on Committee in
a number of roles and responsibilities. Chris is and has always been a fine Clubman and he has always
been very team orientated and proud of the club he has so thoroughly represented. We look forward to his
continued involvement in the years ahead and thank him warmly for his contribution at Committee level and
around the club.
Another significant contributor to the Club was Jake
Gordon who was deservedly named the Best
Clubman of 2007-08. His efforts in driving a number
of social initiatives around the place helped make it
the enjoyable place it is to be at. Significantly his
contributions did not waiver in what was a difficult
year at the outset as he battled injuries.
The contribution of Roy Bell in managing our
sponsors and Clint Kennon and Benn Gordon in coordinating club functions is also greatly appreciated.
Both of these roles go quiet some way to ensuring
our financial well being. The Presentation Night was
a large logistical undertaking that was well
supported and other functions on the social calendar
helped engender a fine spirit around the place.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
On the surface it may appear that we treaded water this year with the first XI narrowly missing the finals
again and the 3rds our shining light. The year that was tells a very different story however.
nd
The first XI we’re excellent in parts but unfortunately fell agonisingly short of finals. The 2 XI produced a
mirror of last year’s season starting the year 6-0 before falling in a hole and missing the finals. The 3rd XI
we’re once again a shining light for the club with stellar finals performance. They unfortunately missed out
th
on the ultimate prize going down to Preston in the decider, and the 4 XI proved to be an excellent training
ground for our upper elevens despite a struggle with numbers from time to time. The club is thankful to the
efforts of the captains in Geoff Kiker, Matt Wilson, Brendan Joyce and Bill Leropoulos. We must also
acknowledge the efforts of the ‘stand in’ captains who assisted during the year, Kane Gordon, Benn Gordon,
Romeo Baseggio and James Lowrie. Congratulations must go to Peter Harper for making the VSDCA team
of the year.
rd
I am enormously proud of the on field efforts in 2008, a special mention must go to the 3 XI who have
played in numerous grand finals in recent years only to miss out on a premiership. Having played in several
of these grand finals myself I feel the pain of these players and hopefully grand final success is not too far
away for them at any level.
Our partnership with the Balwyn Football Club has continued to grow and thanks in no small part to our joint
effort the facilities have undergone terrific improvements throughout the year. The improvement has not
come without short tem pain. We had new ‘warm season’ drought tolerant grass planted at the very start of
the cricket season. Whilst we did not see the fruit of this during the season, the long term benefits of this will
be outstanding. We also moved out of our change rooms into temporary facilities half way through the year
as construction began on new, larger change rooms. We are very grateful to the City of Boroondara for the
money invested in both our clubs and look forward to a tremendous year on the new playing surface and in
the new change rooms.
As always I find myself calling on the members to support the club both on and off the field as much as
possible. As a committee we work hard to provide the best playing, training and social facilities possible but
none of this happens without the help of the members. We require all players, past players, supporters,
partners and friends to grow the club’s network so that we can thrive off the field as well as on it – I am keen
to get all Balwyn people involved as much as possible around the club.
I would like to thank the VSDCA for their support and guidance. Ken and his team do a terrific job running
the competition and I thank them for their assistance and advice in a number of matters this year. I also
thank the retiring secretary, Daryl Thiele for his years of service and wish him well for the future.
Finally a thankyou must go to our sponsors without
whom the running of this club would not be possible.
The support of the various sponsors is vital to our
ongoing viability as an organisation and I look
forward to maintaining these relationships with
existing and new sponsors in the future.
As I said on presentation night we must be steeled
by our performances of the last two years and look
enthusiastically towards the coming season and I
thank the members for their ongoing support. I
would encourage all members to be involved in the
club and welcome ideas and input into all aspects of
our administration and playing activities.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
TREASURER’S REPORT
The global economy has been confronted with some enormous challenges over the past year, from the US
sub prime mortgage crisis and resulting impact on global liquidity in the second half of 2007, through to the
major correction in the global equities markets in January 2008. It was against this background of financial
volatility that the Balwyn Cricket Club stood firm to still manage a modest surplus of $995 in season 2007/08
(2006/07: $2,781).
Our profit result should be viewed in a positive light, considering it was achieved in the context of some
significant financial ‘headwind’ over the past year. This included the significant loss of bar stock following the
fourth break in and robbery at Balwyn Park in as many years, the unrealized losses on the managed
investments balance this year in light of the local and overseas equities performances, outlays for the
VSDCA Centenary celebrations and a diminishing sponsorship support base.
Club revenues decreased by $4,069 (6%) on the prior year result, mainly due to the $4,948 (20%) fall in
Other Social and Fundraising income and $3,014 (160%) decline in income from Managed Investments
respectively. Member Subscriptions provided some substantial upside in season 2007/08, increasing by
45% to $16,803 (2006/07: $11,577) on the back of a revised subscriptions structure and an expanding junior
membership base. Income from Sponsorships and Donations was down 28% to $6,690 due to the continued
decline in sponsorship involvement in season 2007/08.
Total expenses decreased by 3% to $65,364 this season (2006/07: $67,647) with tighter cost management
proving successful for the club. The Inventory, Merchandise and Consumables cost bucket was a key factor,
decreasing by 46% to $7,107 (2006/07: $13,060) with the purchase of the club tracksuits and match ball
write off significantly inflating the prior year figure. This saving was also complemented by a $1,709 (15%)
decrease in Ground Rental Charges this season and a lower incidence of Fines, whilst Indoor Training costs
also fell due to better collections at pre-season training. These savings were offset predominantly by an
increase in Coaching, Training and Professional Player costs to $22,450 (2006/07: $17,285), whilst
Administration, Secretary and Trophy costs were up on the back of carry over costs from the prior year.
Based on the challenging environment we are currently faced with, the Club needs to continue to drive
additional financial support from both inside and outside the club. A decline in our external sponsorship over
the past 2 years is cause for concern and stresses the urgent requirement for us to continue to differentiate
and promote our Club’s good name on an on going basis.
In closing I would like to pass on my special thanks to Benn Gordon for his committed efforts and
innovations in his role as Social and Fundraising coordinator on the committee for the past 2 seasons.
Thanks once again to Honorary President James Sheehan, Honorary Secretary Brett Oliver and the
Committee for their advice and support with matters financial and administration respectively throughout the
course of the season. Thanks also to the sponsors and members of the Balwyn Cricket Club for your
generous contributions towards subscriptions, social and fundraising events throughout the year.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
THE CLUB CHAMPIONS
From 1949-50 the best-performed player in the 1st XI was awarded the club champion trophy (Lindsay
Traeger Trophy). In 1978 the club champion was re named the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy in honour of Jack
who had died the previous year.
The BA Provan Trophy was created in 1985 with players in all teams being eligible for the award. The
winner of the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy was thereafter referred to as the 1st XI champion but was not eligible
to win both awards.
Both awards are decided on a points formula for runs, assisted wickets, unassisted wickets, catches,
stumpings, run outs direct and run outs assisted. The BA Provan Trophy includes points awarded for home
and away fixtures only.
Winner of the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy for 2007/08 – Peter Harper.
Winner of the BA Provan Trophy for 2007/08 – Kane Gordon.

THE BUD WALDER MEDAL
A brilliant leg spin bowler and very capable middle order batsman, Bud has been a five time club champion,
coached the club and represented the VSDCA side on many occasions. He was awarded life membership in
1979 and is still a staunch supporter and occasional player and a very popular member of the Balwyn
Cricket Club. The Bud Walder Medal is awarded on a 3-2-1 basis across all grades.
Most of the interest centred on the placings (and associated financial investments!) with warm favourite
Peter Harper opening up a commanding lead by the midway point of the vote count.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
COACH’S REPORT
Firstly I would like to thank Mark Gordon (Chairman of Selectors) for his effort and support over the journey.
Mark is the heartbeat of Balwyn CC and made my job much easier. I also offer my thanks to the Captains of
the other grades (Bill Leropoulos, Kane Gordon/Geoff Kiker, and Matthew Wilson) for their valuable
contributions towards the vision and the direction the club undertakes on the playing side. Thank you also to
James Sheehan and his Committee for their on going help and support. James in particular is a great person
to work with and is always 100% behind any decisions I make.
In relation to onfield the club has established a strong training ethic and a regular high attendance of players
training. This certainly helped us achieve another high finish in the VSDCA Club Championship (8th of 28).
The positives of the year came from the group of young players we were able to move towards the higher
grades. Players such as Mitchell Carey, Akash Soeny, Amahl Weeramantry, Alex Tsesmelis, Steve Vincent,
Suraj Prakash and Chris Braine are the future and hopefully we as a club provide the coaching and support
st
for these guys to prosper and become in time regular 1 XI players.
As well as juggling the pathway for our young players at the club we still have a terrific band of cricketers
playing through the grades for a variety of reasons, a point that was strongly featured in an article published
in ‘The Age’ newspaper earlier in the season. Many of these guys offered their support to the 3rd XI finals
campaign which was appreciated by all involved and again my congratulations go to Bill and his sides
continued winning ways.
I am proud to be associated with Balwyn CC as it prides itself on welcoming and embracing cricketers of all
levels and standards. I am also proud of and thank the players who represented the club during the year for
their support, attendance and attitude which was exemplary.
Brendan Joyce
Balwyn CC Captain-Coach
FIRST XI REPORT
A finish just outside the top four for a second successive season provided a disappointing result for the 1st
XI. A competitive effort was given every week but for us to improve in the forthcoming year individuals need
to focus on improving specific weaknesses.
One player who had an outstanding year was Peter Harper (615 Runs and 17 Wickets). Throughout he
displayed great skills whilst batting, bowling or fielding. His effort and attitude are an example of what is
needed to become a consistent player. David Bell (275 Runs) showed great improvement and often set a
solid foundation at the top of the order with Peter, showing he has the game to become a long term player at
this level. The batting was rounded out by David Bennett, Benn Gordon, Patrick Tuohey and Marty Gleeson
who all made valuable contributions throughout the year.
A new player at the club who added plenty to our line up was Ben McLeod (21 Wickets). Although he had
some interruptions with injury niggles he showed either when opening the bowling or batting middle order
that he has plenty of talent. Hopefully his body allows him to build on his very encouraging debut year.
Our bowlers worked tirelessly every week and in Clint Kennon (15 Wickets), Paul Janes (16 Wickets) and
Michael Tuohey (16 Wickets) they worked well as a unit in support of Ben and Peter. The bowlers were
supported with some excellent catching and ground fielding throughout the year.
I would like to wish Marty Gleeson all the best as he pursues a playing-coaching role at North Balwyn CC.
Marty has been a great player and person for this club over a number of seasons.
I look forward to next season with genuine optimism as I am confident that with increased commitment
across the board this playing group has the capability and talent to achieve greater success.
Brendan Joyce
First XI Captain
(Editors Note – Brendan had another outstanding season compiling more than 500 Runs to win his 3rd
successive batting award)

BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
SECOND XI REPORT
The 2007/2008 was certainly a tale of two halves for the 2nd XI this season. With Geoff Kiker playing 1st XI
for the majority of the year captaining duties were shared with Benn Gordon, James Lowrie & myself
throughout the season.
We started the year very brightly winning our first 5 games. Early on in the season it was extremely pleasing
to see Steve Vincent, David Bell & James Sheehan perform well and all earn their spot in the 1st XI. David in
particular made the most of his opportunity and had a fantastic season in the 1st XI for the remainder of the
year.
With strong performances in the 3rd XI several younger players were giving opportunities in the 2nd XI and it
was encouraging to see the likes of Chris Braine, Alex Tsesmelis , Suraj Prakash, Akash Soeny, Mitch
Carey, Guy Looker & Matt O’Hern all make fantastic contributions throughout the 2nd half of the season.
Several of these players were also given an opportunity in the 1st XI which will hold them in good stead for
future seasons.
As promising as the younger players were, a combination of their lack of experience and the seasoned
players not performing to their best, saw the side fall away badly in the second half of the season and fail to
make the finals. This was most disappointing given the start we had to the year.
I would to take this opportunity also like to congratulate Guy Looker on his innings of 178 (club record at 2nd
XI level) against Ormond which was one of the best witnessed at the level. Congratulations also to Pat
Tuohey on his magnificent innings against Moorabbin (146), the first we hope of many 100’s for Balwyn
against an attack that was worthy of 1st XI honours. James Lowrie also made a fantastic 100 against
Preston in what was a difficult year for him with injuries.
I would also like to make mention of Matt O’Hern. His efforts and willingness to bowl in all situations
throughout the year made him a standout for the Captains award this year. He was also a fantastic support
on match day helping with covers and the like for every home game. I would also like to thank Paul O’Hern
who was a fantastic help throughout the year whether it be scoring, organising tea’s or just encouraging the
younger brigade. Your help was most appreciated Paul, thanks very much.
Congratulations to Brett Oliver for taking out the 2nd XI batting average. I have been fortunate enough to
play a lot of cricket with Brett and would like to thank him for is encouragement and support during the year.
Thanks also to James Sheehan, Chris Wilks, James Lowrie, Benn Gordon & Geoff Kiker for their assistance
throughout the season, the task was certainly made easier having these blokes around.
Finally I would like to thank the Balwyn Cricket Club for the opportunity to captain the 2nd XI. It was certainly
a tough challenge but one that I have enjoyed. Thanks very much to the players and everyone involved at
Match and Committee level.
Kane Gordon
Second XI Captain
(Editors Note – Kane had an outstanding year taking 26 wickets mainly as a new ball bowler. His haul
included 6/29 vs Brunswick and he also scored over 200 runs (and he left a few in the bank as well!) as well
as providing excellent leadership for the predominantly younger group)

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
THIRD XI REPORT
As I’m writing this I can’t help but think of the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day”, which starred Hollywood
actor/comic Bill Murray. The basic plot of the movie is based on a TV weatherman (Murray) finding himself
living the same day over and over again. Balwyn Third Eleven was once again the only Balwyn team
participating in finals action. Once again we produced a memorable victory in a Semi Final away from
home, this time against our Grand Final nemesis from the previous season (Broadmeadows), and once
again we progressed to a Grand Final berth (this time against Preston). Once again however, I’m
disappointed to report that the team fell well short in a very “gettable” run chase. Like the Murray character
in the film, it seems that we are destined to this outcome for eternity, but hopefully one day there will be a
happy ending which, with perseverance, I am confident will come our way sooner rather than later.
Congratulations to Preston and their Captain, Wayne McLaughlin, on their Premiership win and in the
manner in which they achieved it.
Excellent match summaries of our Finals campaign appear elsewhere in this report but suffice for me to say
(once again) that we certainly rode the rollercoaster of emotions during that 2 week period.
Many thanks to all who supported us during this time, particularly the players from the other teams in the
Club who trained with us after their season had ended. Also thanks to our President James Sheehan and
the Committee, as well as to everyone who came to the games, for their wonderful support during our
th
campaign. Special mention to Matthew Jones, for his efforts as our 12 man during the Finals. From the
players’ perspective this show of support from so many is greatly appreciated and it certainly makes you feel
proud and valued.
Throughout the season the team consisted of a good blend of youth and experience and adopted a very
positive approach to the game. We built on the solid game plan that has been established at Balwyn in
recent years (based on the Brendon Joyce blueprint) and on most occasions executed very well.
I recall our first game of the season and, during our hit up, looking around and seeing so many 14, 15 & 16
year olds (all of which are new faces at the Club). In order to keep track of the age-based over restrictions I
needed to carry a scribbled note in my pocket whilst in the field! When I enquired with each of the young
newcomers as to where they batted in the order and when they bowled I was left with 5 or 6 batting at
number 4 and that many new ball and first change bowlers! A challenge for any Captain, but one that I
enjoyed as I witnessed promising talent, eagerness and passion emerge from these “young guns”. All were
rewarded with opportunity in higher teams, often on potential rather than performance, as the Selection
Committee continued to adopt a youth policy. Well done to Chris Braine, Mitch Carey, Dan Kiley, Suraj
Prakash, Wei-Hsin Shiek, Akash Soeny, Alex Tsesmelis, Steve Vincent and Amahl Weeramantry. By
providing young players with this early experience we are that much closer to unearthing our next crop of
First Eleven cricketers.
Notable performances include:
Darren Strachan 228 runs @ 32.6
Bill Leropoulos 269 runs @ 24.5 & 12 wickets @ 18.3
Damien Boland 223 runs @ 22.3
Jon Kerr 172 runs @ 24.6
Brett Oliver 126 runs @ 63.0
Trent Silvers 23 wickets @ 14.7 (including 6 for 35 vs Preston in the Grand Final)
Dom Moloney 19 wickets @ 18.3 (including 5 for 44 vs Yarraville
Mitch Carey 102 runs @ 34.0 & 12 wickets @ 10.0 (including 5 for 33 vs Melton)
Jake Gordon 11 wickets @ 21.0 (including 6 for 31 vs Broadmeadows in the Semi Final)
Thanks to all the players (26 in total) who played in the Thirds this season. Also to a number of the parents
who helped out at different times during the year. Special mention to Jon Kerr for his support and guidance
(particularly to our young brigade) all the while playing with a knee injury. All the best in your retirement Jon!
On a sombre note, I am saddened by the recent passing of our Club Umpire, Richard Parsons. Richard has
been a terrific supporter of Balwyn and will be sadly missed by everyone in Subbies. His demeanour and
calming influence were greatly appreciated. Richard, may you rest in peace.
My personal thanks is also extended to Brendan Joyce (Club Captain/Coach), Mark Gordon (Chairman of
Selectors), Geoff Kiker/Kane Gordon (2nd Eleven Captains) and Matt Wilson (4th Eleven Captain) for their
highly valued and committed support throughout the season.

A remarkable win by Balwyn's 3rd Eleven against their
nemesis of recent years, Broadmeadows, propelled the
team into the Grand Final against Preston.
After losing the toss, Balwyn was sent in on Day 1 on
what looked like a well grassed but slow wicket. Balwyn

required to bat for 18 overs prior to stumps which
provided the opportunity for Trent Silvers to fire in from the in from the top end. He collected an early wicket
and Broadmeadows were 1 for 28. A late wicket to Jake Gordon was a pre-curser of Day 2 as
Broadmeadows had reached 2 for 62 at stumps, after some fiery exchanges between the two sides.

As Day 2 began, with the promise of 40 degree heat, we needed to bowl tight lines and force early wickets.
Gordon broke through after the addition of only 1 run. Gordon (6 for 31 off 14 overs) and Silvers (3 for 34 off
23 overs) bowled in a memorable partnership as Broadmeadows lost 6 for 31 to be 8 for 93. Gordon had
secured the important wicket of the Broadmeadows Captain (the experienced David Ashen), thanks to a
wonderful catch by young wicketkeeper Alex Tsesmelis. He then proceeded to take the ninth wicket of
Broadmeadows’ talisman Sean Wolfe LBW. The two bowlers had put in a sterling performance as Jon Kerr
came on to give Gordon a well deserved rest and secured the tenth wicket, leaving Broadmeadows all out
for 110. The opposition deliberated over the tea break about having a bowl but common sense prevailed
and they conceded defeat leaving Balwyn to proceed to the Grand Final.

Playing a Grand Final over the Easter week-end meant
many Suburban cricketers were required to make hasty
changes to their normal holiday plans but of course such
a sacrifice, not easily understood by normally supportive
family members, was considered well worth the price for
a shot at a Premiership Flag.
After once again losing the toss, Balwyn took the field on
a sunny and fine Day 1 after Preston Captain (Wayne

Silvers (6 for 35 off 23 overs) bowled superbly and was ably supported by
Gordon (2 for 52 off 19 overs) and Jon Kerr (2 for 11 off 3.4 overs). Balwyn
were left to navigate what proved to be a tricky pre-stumps session of 8
overs. Overnight Balwyn were 2 for 12, after losing both of the openers.
Day 2 didn’t begin well for Balwyn’s run chase. Wickets were lost early &
frequently. The only real resistance came from Michael Letcher (31), Chris
Braine (23) and Jake Gordon (11 no). Each showed what could have been
achieved by occupying the crease and absorbing the pressure from the
Preston attack. Balwyn all out for 89 just after Tea was a heart breaking
result for all associated with the Team. Congratulations to Preston on
winning the 3rd Eleven North/West Premiership.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
FOURTH XI REPORT
th
The 2007/8 season for the 4 XI unfortunately is destined to be remembered as another season of missed
opportunities, with the side just finishing out of the finals again, despite possessing a winning record. As has
been the case in recent years, due to the significant amount of player turnover, and the fact that we played
nearly half the season short of the full eleven, we were unable to compete with the established sides in the
competition in the critical times during the year. The more frustrating fact is that we lost games to lesser
opposition, purely because we could not field a full side. As is the case with a hierarchal structure, it is
always going to be the lowest side that is punished for the injuries or other absences of players in the higher
grades, and this season, more than most I can recall, was one where we seemed to be unfairly penalised.
Irrespective of the fact that the team did not participate
in finals action this season, I can, as I have done every
year as captain, look back over the season with a great
sense of pride, happiness and overall enthusiasm for
what the team achieved, and more importantly, for what
many of the players are capable of achieving in future
seasons. In Season 2007/8, the 4th XI welcomed a
number of new players to the Club, and it was
encouraging to see that many of the new players are
young with their best cricket ahead of them. Among the
th
players to debut in the 4 XI this year were Chris
Braine, Tom Mead, Fraser Lane, Roshen Martinsteyn,
Andrew Meagher and Mustafa Husseini. It is always
Above: A ‘spanking’ Matthew Wilson cover drive
very gratifying to see the next generation of players
coming through the ranks each year, and I was particularly pleased with the progress of Chris, who
eventually played several games in the 2nd XI and proved that he is a player with tremendous upside, and
should he choose to continue working at his game, will become an extremely successful player at higher
grades in the years to come. I continue to stress every year that it should be recognised that the 4th XI has
been, and will continue to be, a breeding ground for many of the Club’s future stars. It is with a great sense
of pride that I look upon the higher elevens and see many faces that once played in the 4th XI. With that fact
in mind, I have always been very mindful of the need to develop these players, and while sometimes that
may come at the expense of short-term success on the field, I am 100% confident that the investment being
made in these young players will bear fruit for the Club over the longer term.
As far as the season is concerned, due to the reasons stated above, performance was spotty at best – while
at times we looked like a side who could easily compete in the finals (e.g. victory of last year’s premiers,
Brunswick and perennial finalists, Bundoora OP), we also found ways to lose to sides such Sunshine (who
we hadn’t lost to in my 10+ years of playing at Balwyn). Unfortunately, having played at this level for many
years, the inconsistency is part-and-parcel of the game, but must continue to be frustrating to many of the
players who front up week in and week out. I believe that if the Club was better equipped to deal with
absences in the higher grades, we could, in all likelihood, protect ourselves slightly better. I must bear the
responsibility for not adequately protecting the side, as should be part of my role as Captain. I firmly believe
that the future will be to create a more fluid pathway between the senior and junior sides. Until we, as a
th
Club, work out a more efficient way to blood Under 16s and Under 14s through the 4 XI, I fear that the
th
malaise of the 4 XI will continue uninterrupted.
On the batting side of the ledger, during the year the side received valuable contributions from Romeo
Baseggio, Andrew Meagher, Matthew Jones and Thomas Jacob, among others. Unfortunately, the batting
award was claimed by the Skipper, which to me, is
far from an ideal result. I would much prefer to see a
younger player win the award, and hope that the
potential that was flashed by several of the younger
brigade will be transformed into consistency over a
season, and hence production. On the bowling side
of the ledger, we had a number of handy
contributors with the ball, including Brett Barnes,
Romeo, David Meagher, Jacob Jacob and Sam
Connellan. Congratulations must be given to
Romeo, who rounded out a terrific all-round season
by claiming the bowling average, taking 10 wickets
at an average of 21.9. I should also note we were
very fortunate to have our budding wicket-keeping
prodigy, Tom Jacob, perform exceptionally behind
the stumps for much of the year. He was a
deserving winner of the Captain’s Award – no matter

what the context of the game, no matter how poor the
keeping conditions were, Tom was always smiling and
always competing. I really believe that with his natural
athleticism, should he choose to continue to work on
his game, he is destined to play in higher elevens in
the years ahead.
I would like to thank Brendan Joyce for all of his hard
work as Captain/Coach again this season. It is no
surprise that the Club’s work ethic is a direct result of
the Club’s leadership, especially Brendan. He is an
absolutely fantastic person to have around the Club,
in fact, I honestly believe that Brendan has left a
permanent mark on the Club that will auger well for the
Above: Romeo Baseggio ‘ready to pounce’
future. I would also like to thank Jimmy Sheehan for his
tireless work, and Mark Gordon, without whom I would be battling to do my job on a Saturday. I would also
like to extend my thanks to Romeo who was invaluable to me on match days, particularly all the off-field
matters which are a time burden. In addition, I would also like to congratulate the other captains, Geoff,
Kane, and Bill, for their roles in leading their respective sides. In addition, I would like to thank Brett Oliver,
whose role as Secretary is probably the most vital at the Club. His organisational skills with my scores,
averages etc are very much appreciated from my point of view, as has always been his advice with respect
to my side, specific players and the game in general – advice that I have always welcomed and appreciated.
On a personal note, as I sat down after the season and reflected on another campaign, I realised how
fortunate I have been in being able to lead a Balwyn side for so many years. In my mind, it is one of the
greatest honours I have ever received in my life, and I have always walked out with a great sense of pride
when leading the boys onto the field. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I do not think I have consistently
performed my responsibilities as captain to the level that the players in the 4th XI and the Club ultimately
deserves, and I do, once again, apologise for that. Going forward, I think it is time for the captaincy to be
assumed by another Balwynite for next season. Whilst I still hope to play for many more years, I think that
the players deserve more than a part-time cricketer such as myself, especially when it comes to training and
selection. In deciding to stand down as Captain, I will be forever grateful to those over the years who have
supported me in this role and put up with my various idiosyncrasies.
Finally, I would like to thank every one of the players who represented the 4th XI this season and for those
who have played with me for the best part of the last decade. I have taken great pride in playing with every
one of you, especially seeing you develop and enjoy your time playing. I sincerely hope that you found your
time playing in the side a fulfilling experience and I hope to see you all on the field again next year, as we
th
continue to fight the good fight to claim a 4 XI premiership for the Balwyn Cricket Club.

BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
JUNIOR REPORTS
JUNIOR REPORTS (General)
The junior section of the Balwyn Cricket Club is alive and well. This year we fielded one team in each of the
Under 16, Under 14 and Under 12 divisions, along with two teams in the Under 10s. In addition, over 70
children participated in the Milo Have a go program.
A very big thank you goes to the following team coaches and managers: Ian Brown and Ricky Jackson
(U16), Michael De Martinis and Jo Tregear (U14), Brendan Moore and James Houston (U12), Tony Johnson
and Bill Lang (U10 Blue) and Tristan Barlow and Paul Ward (U10 Gold). Elizabeth Orr and Michael De
Martinis were run off their feet with the little tackers in Milo and we thank them sincerely.
Our junior teams play in the ECA, the largest junior competition in Victoria. Getting grounds and producing a
fixture to cater for 303 teams (yes, 303) is a phenomenal task and the executive is to be congratulated. That
said, one of our teams was out of its depth and despite early and loud submissions to the ECA, the U14s
had to soldier through a tough year.
The Hatch team was once again under the guidance of John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr. Balwyn’s
philosophy is to play local cricketers and help develop their cricket and encourage them to play senior cricket
at Balwyn. The team was competitive again this year but failed to reach the finals.
Our U16s had early success winning their first three games but thereafter struggled until a win in the final
game. The U14s, as previously mentioned, were poorly graded. It is a credit to them and Michael and Jo
that they stuck at it and remained positive. The U12s were more than competitive and reached the semifinal. The U10 Gold team consisted entirely of children who had not played competitive cricket before and
acquitted themselves admirably to finish mid table. The U10 Blue team was an undefeated juggernaut.
Importantly, all players participated and contributed to the outstanding success of the team. Well done!
The Junior Clubman of the Year Award went to Tristan Barlow who very generously gave up his time on a
Tuesday evening to coach the U10 Gold team. Tristan was also a leader in the U16 team. Congratulations
and thank you Tristan.
The general committee of Balwyn is trying very hard to improve the interactions between the senior and
junior sections of the Club. A family day was held and was a great success. It will be back next season –
bigger and better. We also held a couple of BBQ get togethers on a Saturday afternoon which were great
fun and well attended.
Congratulations go the Premiers in the divisions we played: Bulleen (U16 AR Tongue Shield), Deepdene
Bears (U14 EC Orr Shield), Box Hill (U12 JR Rewell Shield), North Balwyn (U10 A Gabre Shield) and of
course, Balwyn (U10 W Matthews Shield). Congratulations also go to all of our trophy winners on their
individual successes.
Finally, once again a big thank you to all the coaches and team managers, as well as the “steering
committee” of Paul Ward, Jo Tregear, James Houston, Bill Lang, Tony Johnson and Elizabeth Orr.
Thank you to all the mums and dads who helped make this year such a successful one. Well done boys and
girls. To the U16 boys who will be finishing junior cricket this season, we hope you have enjoyed your time
at Balwyn and trust that you will be playing senior cricket with us next season. See the rest of you next year.
Brendan Moore
Junior Coordinator
UNDER 16
The under 16A2 Balwyn cricket team had a challenging 2007/2008 season. For the first time the ECA
created an A2 grade which primarily consisted of sides made up of top age players. Our team consisted of 4
top age boys. The season however got off to a flier with 3 wins from 3 games. Our first game produced 197
runs from 29 overs. Corey Jackson started the season on fire with a 50*, 68* and 51* with the bat. Mitchell
Carey also started well with both bat and ball and after 3 games we were sitting on top of the ladder.
Reality then struck with games against Bulleen and Mont Albert. Lloyd Thomas managed an 18 against
Bulleen and Tom Mead managed a 38 against Mont Albert. Alex Lyle toiled hard with the ball bowling 20
odd overs for not many runs. We lost both games.
23
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
Burwood District followed and Mitchell Carey with season best figures of 10 overs 6 for 25 bowled us in to a
match winning position bowling Burwood District out for 111. As long as our bats could perform the next
week we thought we were in with a chance. Angus Brown made 18 and we were bowled out for77, well
short of the required total.
In the last game before Christmas we met Boroondara. We bowled well enough to hold them to a
manageable score of 133 from 20 overs however our batting gave up without a whimper. Corey Jackson and
Angus Brown opened the batting and got us off to a fine start until Angus got bowled. The rest of the team
made 14 between them. A low point. A reflection of developing under 15 players trying to match it with older
under 16 players.
After Christmas Pat Kennedy found some form with the bat making a 20* and a 23. While Tristan Barlow
returned his best figures of 10 overs 3 for 50.
In our second last game we came up against Burwood District again. We bowled first and with a few players
missing managed to keep them to 248 from 41 overs. Corey Jackson made 100*, Angus Brown made 28
and with valuable contributions from Luke Zagami, Nick Lauder, Brandon Jackson and Tom Mead we almost
pulled it off making 221. We fell short of the target but the boys got such a lot out of this game that we could
sense that these young under 15’s were turning into tougher competitive top age boys.
Finally we met Boroondara in the last game. Mitchell Carey 77, Corey Jackson 42, Angus Brown 15 and
Luke Zagami 11* were the main contributors in posting a competitive total of 179 from 42 overs. Alex Lyle,
Mitchell Carey, Luke Zagami and Tristan Barlow bowled us home. We won by 1 run. The boys had made it!
With 4 wins and 6 losses for the season one might think the boys had a poor year. Not true. The boys played
to the best of their ability at all times and experienced a great deal along the journey. Next year they will do
very well applying all the lessons they have learnt throughout what was at times a hard season.
Special congratulations to Corey and Mitchell for outstanding seasons and to Angus who represented the
Inner East Emus as keeper and opening bat in the Under 16 Dowling Shield.
Thanks to Ricky Jackson and Sue Zagami for their help throughout the season. And Good luck to the top
age boys in their future studies and cricket careers.

UNDER 14
From a team perspective, the season proved indeed a most challenging one. The combination of having a
squad of players with varying abilities and playing in the highly competitive and skillful U14A (2) section,
where we faced sides that often included 3-4 boys playing representative (and higher) level cricket, meant
that every game played was both physically and mentally demanding. In the end, while the team managed to
win only one game, the fact that the players faced such arduous conditions on a weekly basis with
eagerness and always with a sense of fun is testimony to their strength of character and the overall team
spirit that prevailed during the season.
Looking at some of the individual performances, the All Rounder Award went to team captain Michael Smith.
Michael opened the batting and bowling, and as a result was the team’s backbone. He was the highest
wicket taker (8), just missing out on the bowling average, and made 98 runs. Harry Van Summeran (282
runs at an average of 28.20, including a top-score of 75) was a stand-out performer, and a clear and worthy
winner of the Batting Award. The Bowling Award went to Laurence De Martinis, whose overall bowling
performance included the extraordinary figures of 5 for 18 off 5 overs against Deepdene Bears. Special
mention to the team’s bowling ‘work-horses’, Jack Tregear (47 overs) and Michael Smith (46 overs), who
often were exposed to the full brunt of the opposition’s best batsmen and on many occasions were not
rewarded for their bowling efforts.
My Coach’s Award goes to Simon Kiburg. Simon trained and played hard, always responded to instructions
with enthusiasm and respect, and often put his body at risk of serious injury, especially on those occasions
when he opened the innings for the team.
Finally, my thanks and gratitude to the following. To the Balwyn Cricket Club Junior Committee, in particular,
Brendan Moore, for the opportunity to once again coach and for his on-going support during the season. To
the team manager, Jo Tregear, whose commitment to the club, team and boys made my job all that much
easier. To all the parents for the fantastic meals, and for getting the boys to training and the games on time.
To all the players - Laurence De Martinis, Liam Doherty, Christopher Harding, Pierce Harnischmacher,

Season 2007-08 was a fantastic one for the U12s. After being placed in A grade we were concerned that
they boys may struggle. Not so! A semi-final berth was a just reward for the boys’ efforts.
At U12 level, the club policy is to give everyone the same opportunities and so, despite varying levels of
experience and ability, each player batted and bowled in all positions in the order and had a go at
wicketkeeping.
Our “senior” U12s each had a chance to captain the team and all of them showed leadership qualities and
provided a backbone for the team. Ollie Marett was the standout wicketkeeper and could develop into a
high level gloveman. Harry Lang, Dan Speake, Ben Smith and Will Houston all showed great all round
skills. Lachie Johnson was a standout bowler and won the bowling award.
Our other “senior” U12 was Jasper van Daatselaar who won the Coach’s award because of his tremendous
attitude to the game and his teammates.
The guys who came up from the U10s last season were not daunted by playing in A grade. Campbell Lane,
Tom Moore, Matt Appleby and Michael Hurse all performed solidly and are well placed to dominate in U12s
again next season.
Despite not having played competitive cricket before, Tom Harley and Oskar van Daatselaar made terrific
contributions to the team.
The standout cricketer of the team was Dan Houston. Dan made 240 runs and was only out twice. He also
took the most wickets in our team. Dan won the association batting average and represented the ECA, as
well as winning the Balwyn All-rounder award. Well done Dan.
Thanks go to James Houston for being team manager and to the parents and grandparents who helped
make the season such fun.

UNDER 10 BLUE
The Balwyn Blue under 10 team was undefeated in 2007/08 - winning the premiership. A spectacular
performance and worthy of recognition. Achievements such as this occur rarely and all the cricketers can be
very proud of their achievements.
In addition to winning games all team members further developed their skills and understanding of the great
game and worked well as a team - sharing the batting and bowling equally. Everyone contributed
throughout the year and there were some fine individual achievements with bat, ball and in the field.
Sam Charles, Rebekah Comand, Max Hendry, Charlie Johnson, Harrison Vanderkley, Fin Strijker and
Mitchell Lang all retired with scores of greater than 15 on at least one occasion. Max Hendry made 115
runs for the season without being dismissed. In addition Charlie Johnson (131), Harrison Vanderkley (129)
and Fin Strijker (117) all scored over 100 runs. Fin brought the crowd to their feet on one occasion with a six
of the last ball of the day.
25
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
In the field there were many great individual fielding efforts often resulting in catches or run outs. Everyone
had a chance to wicket keep during the season, Charlie Johnson took three catches in one game and Fin
Strijker affected an amazing 4 run outs in another.
There were also some excellent bowling performances throughout the season. Notably a three wicket haul
for Fin Strijker and two wicket hauls for Charlie Johnson (5 times), Jimmy Baring, Rebekah Comand, Shawn
D’Souza, James Kamp, Dan Murphy and Isobel Stoneman. Charlie Johnson took thirteen wickets for the
season at an average of just over three.
A season highlight was the competition for the most innovative morning tea. In a fiercely fought event, with
many outstanding delights prepared, the winner was James Kamp’s mum Fiona. Congratulations to Fiona
and thank you to all the parents for your support throughout the year.
Many thanks to co-coach Bill Lang for all his efforts at training during the week and to Brendan Moore for all
his organisation. Also to Gavin Clancy, Peter Charles, Michael Stoneman and Sam and Leigh Baring who
helped out with umpiring, coaching and scoring responsibilities.

UNDER 10 GOLD
2007/08 saw the first season of competitive cricket for all of the boys in this team and whilst the win loss
ratio was not in our favour being 5 wins from 15 games, the improvement shown in the whole team was
fantastic to watch. I commend the enthusiasm, sportsmanship, skills and enjoyment that all the boys
displayed throughout the season and congratulate Tristan Barlow as Coach for helping develop these traits.
The most pleasing aspect was watching the cricketing skills develop and from the start of the season where
players were struggling to bowl on the pitch or make runs, to the end of the season where we took the top
side to within an 8 run result, it was a proud group of parents who witnessed the development of great
cricketers of the future.
Cricket at this age is all about enjoyment of this great game, development of skills and learning and abiding
by the rules of the game. If success can be judged against that criteria, we had an outstanding season. The
players who excelled in these areas are as follows:
Matthew Cheah: One of the younger players who is able to play under 10’s again next year and a player
with a text book technique in both bowling and batting.
Max Chew Lee: Was one of the smallest players on the field but with the biggest heart. Great cricket skills
and his enthusiasm for the game is unmatched.
Max Curtis: A fine all-rounder with a mid wicket hook good enough to take him to the next Indian 20/20
series. A great season.
Loughlan Dalton De Burgh: The courage displayed by Lough after an interrupted season with sickness was
outstanding and as an Adam Gilchrist look a like with the bat, lead to a thoroughly deserved batting award.
Fraser Hillier: Was one of the most improved players throughout the season particularly with his bowling
and competitiveness. A fine year.
Liam Hillier: A twin with Fraser and a twin in relation to his improvement and competitiveness throughout the
season. Also a splendid season.
Tristan Gallent: Unlucky to miss an award after a magnificent season with both ball and bat. One of the
finest techniques in the side.
Patrick Kendall: Seemed to know every player in the opposition but maybe because they knew of his
incredible ability. Deserved winner of one of the all-rounder awards this year. A fantastic season.
Jordon Moshopoulos: The opposition found it almost impossible at times to penetrate one of the finest
defences in the game. This will take him a long way in cricket.
Kasper Scheiber: A truly outstanding year and a fine cricketer. A winner of one of the all-rounder awards
and an ability of which should lead to ultimate cricket success.
26
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
Jacob Scruton: One of the finest bowling techniques in the side and another player with a great future. A
fine year.
Tom Sinclair: I wouldn’t want to be facing Tom when he’s 18. Sent down some of the quickest deliveries of
the season and a great year.
William Tinney: Also an outstanding technique with bat and ball and unlucky not to win the bowling award
this season. A fine season.
Jesse Ward: He expected a wicket with every ball and has a copy book Brett Lee bowling style. A deserved
winner of the bowling award and a great year.
Ary Zadoff: Our overseas imported player who it was a pleasure watching his cricketing skills develop
throughout the season. May one day captain the USA.
I would like to again thank Tristan for coaching and developing the boys, Elizabeth Orr for yet again putting
in her time and effort to help this club and the boys, Brendan Moore for all of his tireless work ensuring the
junior teams functioned effectively and efficiently, and all of the outstanding group of parents who helped in
any way they could throughout the season. It was a pleasure being associated with this fine group of boys
and parents.

MILO CRICKET
We had another very successful season for nearly 70 boys and girls from 5 to 10 years, who came to
Balwyn Park to enjoy the Milo Cricket Program. Starting in November, and running for 12 weeks, the
children participated in either Have-A-Game or Have-A-Go each Saturday morning.
For the younger children, John Fitzgerald co-ordinated an excellent Have-A-Go program, and was aided by
most of the parents. While the activities and games emphasize enjoyment, the participants learned many
skills for their future cricketing careers and we hope to see many of them progress to Have-A-Game next
season.
Continuing the success of the Have-A-Game program, which started only last season and provided enough
players for a second Under 10 team this year, Michael De Martinis stepped in as coach. Michael and many
of the parents worked with 25 of the older and more skilled boys and girls introducing them to the finer points
of cricket. Each Saturday morning we continued with 2 full games enabling the children to experience for
the first time proper cricket equipment (harder balls, wooden bats, smaller gloves and pads) as well as
providing greater exposure to the rules and skills of the game, including field placements and teamwork.
A highlight of the program was a visit to the Junction Oval for a small group of 10 in January 2008, to play a
demonstration game during the lunch break of the Pura Cup match between the Victorian Bushrangers and
the South Australian Redbacks. The highlight of the day actually came after their game, when the boys and
girls formed a guard of honour for the fielding team, doing high 5's with all the players as they came back out
onto the ground.
On the final Saturday of this season's Milo Program there were cricket games played between the children
and their parents. Following the matches, a sausage sizzle was enjoyed by everyone and the Milo
participants were presented with a certificate.
A special thank you to Michael De Martinis and John Fitzgerald, the two co-ordinators who organised both
games and skills sessions each Saturday morning. It has been another worthwhile Milo program for the
club, the children and their parents.

EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
VSDCA R.M. HATCH Under 15 Competition
Despite the continual frustration which we are presented with every year due to the myopic thinking of the
VCA and ECCA we once again managed to put together a very competitive squad to represent the Balwyn
Cricket Club in the RM Hatch Competition. Due to the two bodies in question having no consideration or
forethought we were extremely limited in the time we had to get the boys up to the standard required to play
at the RM Hatch level.
The final result of winning three and losing three was satisfying though it could have been better, and while
most will consider the spanking our bowlers took off the Preston side was the catalyst to our win/loss ratio I
personally think the Kew match was the one that flattened all and sundry.
While Preston accumulated a big score (273), it must be remembered we managed 5/192 in reply which
would have been a winning score in every other match we played. Chasing only 124 against Kew should
have been within our grasp but we lost our way resulting in defeat. This defeat carried over resulting in a
loss to Ivanhoe. What was extremely pleasing was the effort against Coburg. Being in the precarious
position of 4/9 it would have been easy for all and sundry to give up the ghost and throw the game away,
however to the boys credit they stuck to the task and came out victors.
A matter of concern to me is that the teams that eventually played in the finals all contained players recruited
from the country, indeed the Preston coach was pleased they had picked up six quality recruits from the
country. My thinking, and that of the committee of the Balwyn Cricket Club is to play youngsters from within
our demographic area in the hope they will eventually play cricket at a senior level with the Balwyn Cricket
Club. Some may disagree with this thinking however I and the committee are of the opinion this is the way to
go.
May I offer my thanks and appreciation to the parents for their support and co-operation during the four
months we were training and playing. Without your support we would not have made it. Also my thanks to
Elizabeth Orr for the tremendous amount of behind the scenes work she does to assist me.
To Alisdair Reeves my thanks for an outstanding job as captain. To captain a side in a competition such as
the RM Hatch Competition puts a lot of pressure on and Alisdair handled it with aplomb. To each and every
one of the boys, thank you most sincerely and good luck in your cricketing futures.

BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
NOTES TO AND FORMING PART OF THE ACCOUNTS
1.
Statement of Significant Accounting Policies
A summary of the significant accounting policies adopted by the Club is set out in this note. The policies are
in accordance with Australian equivalents to International Financial Reporting Standards (AIFRS) and,
unless stated otherwise, are consistent with those applied in the previous year. The financial statements are
a special purpose financial report prepared for the use of the Balwyn Cricket Club.
1.1.
Basis of Preparation of Accounts
These accounts have been prepared under the convention of historical cost accounting, except for
certain fixed assets, which are stated at valuation.
1.2
Property, Plant and Equipment
Assets are depreciated at rates based on their expected useful economic lives, using the straight
line method. The Committee reviews the carrying value of assets at each balance date to ensure
that they are not carried at an amount in excess of their recoverable amount. Any additional writedowns are debited to depreciation expense.
1.3
Rounding
All amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar.
1.4
Comparative Figures
Where considered appropriate prior year comparatives have been adjusted to facilitate comparison.
INDEPENDENT AUDIT REPORT
30
BALWYN CRICKET CLUB INC
EIGHTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
To the members of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated
Scope
I have audited the attached special purpose financial report, comprising the Balance Sheet, the Income
Statement and the notes, of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated for the financial year ended 30 April 2008.
The Committee of Management is responsible for the financial report and have determined that the
accounting policies used are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Balwyn Cricket Club
Incorporated’s constitution and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. I have conducted an
independent audit of the financial report in order to express an opinion on it to the members of Balwyn
Cricket Club Incorporated. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used are
appropriate to the needs of the members.
The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the Committee
of Management’s financial reporting requirements under the Club’s constitution and Cricket Victoria’s Criteria
Assessment. I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial
report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which
it was prepared.
My audit has been conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. My procedures included
examination, on a test basis, of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the financial
report. These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether, in all material respects, the
financial report is presented fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in the notes to the
financial statements. These policies do not require the application of all Accounting Standards and other
professional reporting requirements.
The audit opinion expressed in this report has been formed on the above basis.
Qualification
As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practicable for the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated to
maintain an effective system of internal control over donations, subscriptions and other fundraising activities
until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to fundraising was limited
to amounts recorded.
Qualified Audit Opinion
In my opinion, except for the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have been determined to be
necessary had the limitation discussed in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report
presents fairly in accordance with the accounting policies described in the notes to the financial statements,
the financial position of Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated as at 30 April 2008 and the results of its
operations for the year then ended.
