Several years ago I recall my Horizon’s article suggesting that Sawgrass Country Club was at a turning point. As I reflect back to the beginning of 2010 we were certainly facing several challenges at our club and it gives me relief and pride to know that we weathered those challenges quite well. In 2010 the club was effectively adjusting to a significant drop in membership due largely to the economic downturn that was happening at that time. Many of our facilities and much of our equipment was in need of attention. We were paying off our $4 million debt, our resources had been shrinking for several years, and we were reducing our services where possible to respond to the difficult times. This is when the club introduced the operating capital dues that today provide our club adequate resources to address the operating capital needs of your $25 million asset. As we enter 2016, the club has seen significant improvements to the way we respond to the needs of our facilities, programing, and services and I believe you can all be proud of the planning and leadership of our Board of Governors and our committee volunteers that have provided the vision and dedication to bring us to where we are today. We fully subscribed to a Strategic Planning effort that outlined our members’ vision for the next five years. Through this, the management team got their marching orders and our leadership established their priorities for our club of the future. We completely rebuilt our fitness center, renovated all 27 holes of our golf courses, and are now completing a renovation of our Beach Club. Our progress doesn’t stop there. This planning effort also identified the members’ desire for a casual and high value dining venue which resulted in an investment in the Sandbar Grill at the Beach Club Pavilion, we decided that the club should be appealing to younger families too and the Tarpon Room became our dedicated facility for children’s programming. We did all this without adding long-term debt and retiring the previous Beach Club loan from 2004 two years early in 2012. In addition, we have established and have operated at our membership cap of 1450 membership families for most of 2015 and plan to be at or very near our cap for 2016. This doesn’t mean our recruitment effort is over because we will always need to replace about five percent of our members that leave our club each year. It is a sign that we have realized our intent to be relevant in the lives of our membership and to the members of the future. Last month our Board of Governors participated in a Strategic Retreat to help us revisit our strategic vision and evaluate where we are headed. Although we have accomplished a lot in the past five years, we understand well that our work is not finished. The major themes included our remaining facilities and evaluating the results of our completed projects, renew and improve our commitment to facility maintenance, review and make adjustment to non-member activity or access to Sawgrass Country Club, and to make an effort to strengthen the relationship between the club and the Sawgrass Master Association. Ken Veney is perhaps the newest addition to our team but marks an important commitment to our club’s desire to continuously improve. Ken has taken over as our Director of Tennis and will help us establish the direction of the tennis program at Sawgrass. Magnus Berglund will remain our Head Tennis Professional and Tim Majure will continue his roles as a Department Head in overseeing operations in fitness, recreation, and aquatics. These are all important leadership positions for our club and we are all committed to the successful new program. We have been reviewing our club’s communication channels and practices for hopes of improving our performance in this important area. We have decided that although our communication is not bad, there are areas that we need to improve. We will further embrace technology to help us support a more effective approach to keeping our members HOURS OF OPERATION informed. We are now fully engaged in social media, we have introduced a new website last month and this month we will be introducing an improved Sawgrass App to our membership. The new app will provide a quick reference for club activity but will also allow our members quick access to dining reservations, tee times, tennis court reservations, and reserve some fitness activities. You probably are aware that communication is paramount for ensuring successful club events. Participation is a very important gauge by which we measure successful programming, and our club’s overall success for that matter. This makes communicating these events one of our most important responsibilities and consistent, timely, and clear delivery is what helps make strong participation possible. Your newsletter is just one resource that outlines club events to help you plan your club experience. Here are a few suggestions that will keep you more informed: 1. This newsletter is published for the purpose of keeping members informed about club activities and events, hours of operation, happy hour schedule, entertainment schedule, newsworthy items, contact information for departments, new member announcements and more…..The newsletter is e-mailed to each member and is available for pick-up at various locations around the club. It is also posted on our club’s website. 2. Read informational postings around the club that are intended to remind you of important events. 3. Visit our club’s website online at www.sawgrasscountryclub.com There is no single resource that offers better information regarding our club including, governance, activities, personnel, and other pertinent information. The website is updated daily and has the latest information. You now have the ability to make a suggestion, check on your account statement, make reservations, schedule a tee-time, view course layouts, weather and course conditions. 4. If you are not currently receiving our weekly e-mails, there is no stronger recommendation I can make to you than to provide your e-mail address to Club administration. It will enhance your knowledge and understanding about what is going on at our club. 5. Each submission to our comments and concern section is e-mailed to the department managers, our membership department and to me personally. These submissions are reviewed weekly by all department staff and we confirm that a response has been provided. These are additional ways that your club is gathering information about our members’ perceptions for consideration while we implement programs and events for our members’ enjoyment. Communication is a two way street. Your club puts a great deal of resources into getting the word out to you as members. Please use these forms of communication to ensure you are informed. It will make your club experience better. Turning points are easy to see looking in the past, but when looking in the future, they may not be so evident. Your club intends to promote and perform, act and react, and to deliver to you the best possible member experiences. Some will work better than others. Some may not work at all. Your Board of Governors, various committees, and your management team will continue to expand our offering and try new programs. It is refreshing to really feel that the membership is behind us and supportive. Sawgrass Country Club is a wonderful place to be. – By Barry McDonald Concierge Hours: Monday-Saturday 9:00am–5:00pm Sunday 9:00am-4:00pm Call 904–273–3736. Golf Shop Christmas Sale Tuesday, December 8th • 2:00-8:00pm 5 Dog Tip It is such a pleasure to say that we have all three nines “open” for play! The South Nine has had very few changes with the exception of the bunkers. The new bunkers will certainly present some challenges to even the best golfers! We opened with a short game skills competition on the Par-3 7th on Wednesday, October 28th. Everyone enjoyed the festivities and we appreciate your support of the event. The “Ed Seay” Men’s Member Guest kicks off the month of November with the 38th playing of our Annual Gala Event! The field is full and we are looking forward to another fantastic event! We need your help! Each year through member tournaments and other golf activities including major pools, pick-a-pros, and hole in one’s, thousands of dollars in Golf Shop credit are issued to the membership. These events create a lot of excitement and activity throughout the club, and in return provide the members the ability to use these credits toward purchasing new merchandise and equipment from the Golf Shop. After a few years of accumulation, the total amount of credits has grown to an amount large enough, that we must ask those who have Golf Shop credit to use it in the coming months. With the holidays fast approaching, between now and the end of the year is a great time to reduce your personal account. Most clubs require members to use their credits in the calendar year or forfeit them. We would prefer not to create a deadline to use it by, but we need everyone to use it hopefully by the end of the year. A recommendation has been made for all credits issued prior to 2015, have to be used by December 31st. The Golf Shop is fully stocked and we look forward to your visits in the coming weeks. We really appreciate your cooperation and understanding. 2015 has been another year of great things happening all over Sawgrass Country Club. All of us in the Golf Shop who serve you and your guests and family want to wish you a warm and fun filled holiday, and best wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year. – Greg Lecker, PGA Director of Golf 6 DINING AND SOCIAL Sundae Mondays And $3 Burgers Featuring soft serve yogurt and toppings bar Pavilion • 5:00-8:00pm Burgers $3 • Fries $3 • Sundaes $3 Dine-in Only All your other favorites available including Pizza, etc. Seating is first, come first served.
