Louise was born on May 21, 1926, in Seminole, Okla., the only child of Edward and Florence Carlisle. Louise graduated from Arp High School in east Texas and received a bachelor of library science degree from North Texas State College, now known as the University of North Texas. Lou was a devoted mother and wife, but still found time to work outside the home and be active in her community. Not only was she vice president of Walker Construction Company, she also found time to study and get her insurance agent’s license. Lou became a partner in the independent insurance agency Hill, Walker and Coats in Fort Worth. In addition to her full-time jobs she was active in St. George’s Parish in Fort Worth and later at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in North Richland Hills. She was a member of the Oak Crest Woman’s Club of Hurst, the Fort Worth Woman’s Club, Fort Worth Garden Club, TCU Guild and the D.Y. Chapter of PEO. Lou especially loved her sisters in PEO. Those who knew Lou would agree that she was loving, kind, gracious, generous and vivacious. She tried to make everyone feel special. She leaves this world having made it a better place. We are better for having known her. Survivors: Her husband and lifelong companion, James; sons, Joe and Chip; grandsons, Matt Johnson and Joey Walker; as well as her greatgrandchildren, Sydney and Tripp Walker. ★ THANK YOU to all who attended and purchased cattle at our annual production sale WATCH FOR our consignments to the Cowtown Select Sale and the 45th Annual Premium Whiteface Replacement Female Sale in Fort Worth, February 2, 2014 Jay Wright general manager Ranch 254-635-4444 Ranch Fax 254-635-7201 Cell 254-396-2584 Home 254-728-3443 P.O. What an incredible month October proved to be. Look at the sale results of the production sales held this month. Hereford cattle are really moving to the forefront at a rapid pace. It is very rewarding to hear comments from some of the buyers saying that they are buying Herefords because their Hereford sired calves are out performing their calves sired by other breeds of bulls. They are talking both higher 6 TEXAS HEREFORD • November 2013 percent calf crop as well as heavier calves at weaning. THA members should be proud of the product you are producing but never rest as we need to continue to improve the bulls we provide to the industry. As the spread between Choice and Select continues to widen, we also need to provide all of the performance and carcass data we have. I encourage more breeders to collect carcass information and provide it in a more useable manner. One example is providing ribeye area sizes without giving weights, inches per 100 pounds or indexes. Another rewarding aspect of every sale was the presence of new buyers seeking Hereford genetics. Some had grown up with Herefords or used them years ago, but they all were seeking top end Hereford genetics because they thought Hereford bulls would add value to their calves. I wish to single out and thank the participants in our third annual Fall Classic Sale in Buffalo. Our co-sponsor Buffalo Livestock, sale chairman Curtis Younts, consignors, buyers and everyone else that had a part made this year a huge success. This is an event for members of THA. We hope to grow this sale more and more each year. Please consider saving a top bull or female for next years event. Consignments are coming in nicely for both the Cowtown select Sale and the Hereford Replacement female sale, both to be held on Sunday, February 2, 2014. We again will have the Heritage pen of heifers (our thirteenth year). Every THA member is most grateful to these consignors as this event has been most beneficial to the budget of THA. We plan to provide the high placing junior heifer scholarship in the open show. We decided not to have a breeder forum this year Another item of interest is that we plan to have a silent auction at our annual meeting and social and need a few quality items. If you have something to contribute, please notify myself or Jay Wright, president. Please do so early enough to allow us to prepare a presentation for it. The meeting will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth. I urge all members to stay in touch with the officers of this organization. We have a few new projects in place and plans for many more. We welcome ideas and suggestions from members as to what they would like this organization to be doing. November is a month we should give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us. We are truly blessed to work with Hereford cattle and the fine people associated with them. ★ CATTLE SHOW DATE January 2, 2014 INDOOR RODEO January 3-4, 8-11, 2014 Odessa, Texas We lead the show circuit: ✪ ✪ ✪ Quarter Horse Show Team Roping ✪ Youth Activity & Amateur Quarter Horse Show ✪ ✪ ✪ Team Penning Club Steers & Lambs Club Sale Scholarships JUNIOR HORNED AND POLLED HEREFORD HEIFER & STEER SHOWS HEIFER SHOW: 1:00 P.M. -JANUARY 2, 2014 MINIATURE HEREFORD SHOW FOLLOWING HEIFER SHOW HEREFORD STEER SHOW: 8:00 A.M., FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 2014 For entry blanks and catalogues write or call ...
