A Message from the Chair of the Board
Our Super Bowl…
Hockey has the Stanley Cup,
Tennis has the Wimbledon,
NASCAR has the Daytona 500,
Golf has the Masters and Football
has the Super Bowl. You get my
point. The City of Fort Walton
Beach and the FWB Chamber’s
Super Bowl is the Billy Bowlegs
Mark Hamrick
Pirate Festival. A little history on
Owner, Vacuum Center
the Billy Bowlegs Festival.
The Billy Bowlegs Festival grew out of a Labor
Day ski show celebration back in 1953, which was the
brainchild of some enterprising young businessmen,
the JAYCEES, eager to latch onto a project that would
warrant their time and efforts, be fun, and bring more
tourists into the area. The idea of a Gasparilla-type
observance centered on a “pirate” theme, and they
unanimously chose as their patron pirate the notorious
and legendary William Augustus Bowles, a pirate of
controversial authenticity whose alleged dastardly deeds
were widespread throughout the area. Nathan Fleet, a
downtown Fort Walton Beach retail merchant at that time,
was chosen as the first Captain Billy Bowlegs to reign
over the Festival and lead the pirate “raids.”
In 1956 the FWB Chamber and our Annual Sponsors
started sponsoring the event that is now one of the nation’s
longest running and most popular Pirate Festivals. The
event gets bigger and better ever year and this year will

The motto this year is “Relentless Renegades” and
I have talked with Captain Billy Bowlegs 58 (aka Rick
Harris) and he and his crew are ready for the big weekend
and plan on taking the city again. Not so fast!! I have also
spoken to Mayor Mike Anderson and he says they will
have a few new tricks up their sleeves this year to try and
hold the city. He would not go into details, of course. This
is going to be three great fun filled days that so many in
our community look forward to.
For the second year the Torchlight Parade will be
Thursday night May 30th starting at 7:00 PM. The
Festival site will also be open and there is a Pirate Zombie
Walk. That should be interesting!! The Festival will
be open Friday with fireworks that night and Saturday
with Captain Billy and his crew coming ashore for the
battle. There is entertainment scheduled for all three days
including Tom Mason & The Blue Buccaneers (Thursday
& Saturday), Cabo Rock (Friday Headliner) and Don’t
Stop Believing-Journey Tribute Band (Saturday).
Like all our Chamber events, they would not be
possible without great volunteers, and Bowlegs takes
more then any other event of the year. If you want to have
a lot of fun and promote your business at the same time,
call Rachelle Graves at the Chamber 244-8191. Thank
you for your Chamber membership and support. I am
looking forward to the 2013 Billy Bowlegs Festival and
hope to see you there.

President’s Message
FWB Chamber: Not just Events
Since the start of the year, our chamber has organized, or been part of the
following events: Healthy Living Expo
with White Wilson Foundation 5 K
Run; Biggest Loser Contest; Installation
Banquet, Mardi Gras Parade; Martin
Luther King Day march; ResortQuest
Ted Corcoran
Winter Guest Fest; Okaloosa County
President/CEO/IOM
Multi Chambers Expo; City of FWB
Candidates Forum; Doolittle Raider
Reunion; Musical Echoes and Earth Day. In addition we have
our monthly networking events, new member events; board and
committee meetings! So, yes, if anyone asks if our chamber does
events—the answer is a resounding YES!!
However there are many behind-the-scenes initiative that
perhaps do not get as much face time as those listed above. Here
a just a few off the top of my head:
City of FWB Dog Park
Our community needs a dog park. The City offered land and
labor to build. Chamber offered to lead the fundraising—with our
Cumulus broadcasting friends, Lisa Captain/Karen Burns. www.
FWBdog park.com
Qualified Green Business Program
Through the efforts of the Environment Committee, their
goal to make our community more sustainable. A great checklist
questionnaire is available at www.fwbchamber.com which will
assist your business in becoming qualified. Plus you will get a
cool Qualified Green Business window sticker when you finish!
Community Solutions
Ending homelessness in Okaloosa County is a daunting goal,
but one that can be accomplished with a Chamber based group
called Community Solutions working very closely with the folks
who are in the field working on these issues such as Continuum
for Care. Very soon there will be a one stop website available
to answer all details on helping the homeless in our community.
And sometime in the very near future—we feel within 5 years—
there will be a shelter that our community will run to truly help
the less fortunate in Okaloosa County.
RESTORE Act Committee
Board of County Commissioners are forming a 11 person
committee to oversee and plan for whatever happens with the
RESTORE Act monies, etc. Our chamber has one seat on that
committee. Stay tuned for more info on this.
Six Pillars
Working with our other Okaloosa County chambers and the
EDC, we are working cooperatively to create a business template
for our county. By following the Six Pillars example structured
through the State, we are all ready to become much more proactive in our solicitation and promotion of Okaloosa County as a
great place to expand, relocate or start up a business.
Conclusion
If you see it on the cover of the Daily News, I can almost guarantee that there are members of our chamber of commerce involving in trying to make a difference in our community. If you are
interested in participating in any of those listed above—or desire
to start another initiative, please give me a call.
Competitors Meet the Challenge
It was a happy – and very svelte looking—group who celebrated the end of the Chamber’s “Challenge Accepted” weight
loss challenge at Shoreline Church on Friday, April 5. With seven
teams (52 individuals) participating, their hard work and dedication resulted in a total weight loss of 465 pounds!
Hannah Curlee, the runner-up on Season 11 of NBC’s The
Biggest Loser, was the special guest of honor at the festive event,
and she gave an inspiring message along with presenting the
awards to the winners.

With It, Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, HealthSource
Chiropractic and Progressive Rehab, Twelve Oaks Alcohol &
Drug Treatment Center, MaxFit Sports Nutrition, BitWizards,

And a special thanks to Heather Blatz of Gold’s Gym, who kept
our participants in line and motivated.v
Hannah Curlee congratulates Julie Cucuzzella, the
top overall individual participant. Julie won a prize basket
filled with gifts from Southern

Ambassador
As a resident of Okaloosa County for most of the past 30
years, I have been blessed to call this place my home. I am
continually reminded of what a truly great place this is to live
in and how lucky I am to be able to serve this great community
by working with business leaders to champion growth in our
local economy and enhance the overall quality of life of our
citizens.
In working with the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of
Commerce over the past few years I have witnessed our local
businesses weather the storm of 2008 and find strength in each
other to overcome the hardships. Today, with over 1500 member businesses, the Chamber supports the combined efforts of our local businesses to
make this the best place to do business on the Emerald Coast by providing them with
the resources and networking opportunities they require in order to achieve their goals.
I find great satisfaction in working with the Ambassadors Committee because our
committee is granted the opportunity of guiding and mentoring new members through
the countless benefits, opportunities, and services the Chamber offers. If you are not
having success integrating your business into the Chamber, please contact one of our
Ambassadors so we can help. Finally, consider joining the Ambassador team as you
will then be exposed to all of the Chamber committees and events, as well as being
introduced to all of the new businesses joining the Chamber today.

Get ready for a sweet Southern experience
Go Southern – a local, family-owned group of
companies under the Southern brand – has been in
business since 1995 under the leadership of Mike and
Brad Shoults and Kevin and Kerry Veach. Through
their active involvement, Southern provides genuine
local service to owners and guests, maintaining a
small company feel alongside big company reach and
resources.
With a vision to be the most caring company along
the Gulf Coast, Southern’s employees bring that small
company feel to life, making every owner, guest and
partner feel individually impacted by great service
and an experience that exceeds expectations.
Led by Mike Shoults and Kevin Veach, Southern
Vacation Rentals has earned a reputation of integrity,
exceptional service and dependability. Representing
high quality and well maintained properties along
the Gulf Coast, Southern Vacation Rentals’ inventory
ranges from charming one-bedroom beach access
condos to grand eight-bedroom beach front homes,
and virtually everything in between.
As innovation and aggressive marketing are core
pillars of the Southern brand, a key initiative that
benefits owners, guests and local business alike is the
Southern Perks program. Through Southern Perks,
guests receive exclusive discounts to attractions,
activities and restaurants, and local business partners
receive unparalleled exposure to thousands of
Southern guests each year.
As Southern Vacation Rentals continues to expand
its portfolio, they have most recently opened a new
area office, in-house at Sea Oats condominiums,
where Southern has successfully managed more than
20 condo rentals for decades. This new office, and the
main Fort Walton Beach office, are led by new area
General Manager, Dawn Robinson.
RE/MAX Southern Realty, directed by owners and
brokers Kerry Veach and Brad Shoults, is one of the

Shalimar United Methodist Church
Helps Children in Crisis
The Shalimar United Methodist Church continued their
wonderful support to Children in Crisis again this year by
donating $12,615.62 to help provide a home to the children
living at the CIC Children’s Neighborhood. Pastors Larry
Bryars and David Hoppenjan presented the check on behalf
of the membership. The donation helps to feed, clothe, care
and give a home to about 100 children per year from our
community
Ken Hair, CIC President & CEO commented, “We have
been blessed with great support from the community to
build the Children’s Neighborhood. However, it’s really
tough to find funding to feed and clothe the kids and sustain
operations of the Children’s Neighborhood. Support from
the Shalimar United Methodist Church is a tremendous
help in our efforts to provide a safe haven to the abused,
neglected and abandoned children in need of a home.”
The CIC Children’s Neighborhood is located in Fort
Walton Beach but provides a home to foster children from
Okaloosa, Walton, Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. It
has an emergency shelter for children who are removed
without notice from an unsafe environment, family foster
homes for young children and teen transition homes for
foster children aging out of the program. To learn more

For the fifth time in as many studies conducted, Edward

according to a newly released study by J.D. Power and

Financial advisors also scored extremely high the support they receive from their branch office administrators
and the firm’s home office associates.

Bringing a Dog Park
to Fort Walton Beach
In the Fall of 2012, the Fort Walton
Beach City Council voted to approve
the construction of a dog park at Liza
Jackson Park, located at the western end
of town, right on the Santa Rosa Sound.
There were, however, conditions: The
money to construct and maintain the dog
park must be raised by the community.
No public funds are to be used for this
project.
The Greater Fort Walton Beach
Chamber of Commerce and Cumulus
Broadcasting took the reins (or rather,
the leash) and began the fundraising
effort.
If we’re going to cut the ribbon on
this much-needed community addition
by October 12, 2013 - Dog Daze 2013
- we need your help! We’ve already
received several significant donations
and many small ones – but need YOUR
HELP to make the Dog Park a reality! If
every dog owner in the county were to
give just $1, then we’d already be there!
Donations of any size will be a huge help
– but if you’d like to make a significant
gift, here are some options:
In recognition of your $1,000
donation, a bench will be named in honor
of your pet, your family, or your cause
of choice. 6” by 10” personalized plaque
will commemorate your generosity.
A $250 donation will sponsor a 10-ft.

the property. A 6” by 10” personalized
plaque will recognize your generosity.

three-day celebration of the pirate Capt. Billy Bowlegs, who, legend has it, frequented
the waters off the Emerald Coast in the 1700s.
The festivities start off with a gala parade on Thursday, May 30, that wends its
way up Eglin Parkway in Fort Walton Beach. Then the party moves to the Landing, a
waterfront park, where pirates and their wenches – along with buccaneers in training
– gather to enjoy the vendors and entertainment that pervades the park through June 1.
“We have our headline entertainers all lined up – Cabo Rock, Tom Mason and the
Blue Buccaneers, and Don’t Stop Believin’ – and we’re very excited about each of
them. However, we have a couple of openings in the entertainment schedule, and
we’d love to showcase some local talent,” said Ted Corcoran, president and CEO of
the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, the event organizers. “We
have two spots to fill – Friday afternoon (May 31) and Saturday at 5 pm. Each is
60-90 minutes. Traditionally we’ve had rock, classic rock, and country bands – but,
like all pirates, we’re open to great new ideas!”
Interested bands should submit a press kit with audio files to Rachelle Graves,
director of events for the FWB Chamber ([email protected]) or
deliver it to the Chamber at 34 Miracle Strip Parkway, SE, in Fort Walton Beach,
before May 10.
