Dear Friend,
Princeton Baptist Medical Center has forged a rich history based on its faith-based mission, and as we look to the
future, our ministry is flourishing and stronger than ever.
To keep us at the forefront in health care, a $57 million expansion plan is underway on the Princeton campus
to renovate 60,000 square feet of existing space and add another 90,000 square feet. The project focuses on
replacement and expansion of the hospital’s 14 operating rooms, but also includes other improvements to provide
greater convenience and comfort for our patients and their families. By the time the project is complete, we will have
some of the most modern, state-of-the-art surgical and endoscopy suites in the area.
The renovation will address changes generated by today’s medicine, including robotic surgery and hybrid surgical
rooms, which bring advanced imaging equipment into the operating room to maximize our surgeons’ precision and
the quality of our care.
We are proud to announce the opening in October 2010 of the Baptist Health Center at Hoover, a new 50,000
square foot professional office building. Located at the intersection of Highway 459 and Highway 150, the new
building will house a 10,000-square-foot diagnostic center, sleep disorders center and provide space for
25 – 30 physician offices. This wonderful new facility will provide easier, more comprehensive access to physicians
and outpatient care for area residents.
Our growth is not limited to bricks and mortar. Princeton and Baptist Health System have placed a heightened focus
on our performance in the area of quality. Based on our commitment to transparency regarding our outcomes, and
the pride we take in the quality of care we provide at Princeton, we have posted our quality scores on our website,
which may be found at www.bhsala.com.
You’ll find we’re among the first locally to offer a full presentation of our quality measures and to offer some basic
education on quality.
Our performance has been recognized recently with several national accreditations. Princeton’s heart care program
has been recognized as the area’s first Accredited Chest Pain Center and has received performance achievement
awards over consecutive years from the American Heart Association in its “Get With The Guidelines” initiative. We’ve
been designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care by Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
The weight loss surgical program is now an Accredited Bariatric Center by the American College of Surgeons, while
our cancer program was recognized with a three-year accreditation with commendation and the outstanding
achievement award following its most recent survey by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of
Surgeons.
Participation and leadership of our dedicated physicians help to inspire and ensure the continuing success of our
outstanding medical education program. Princeton trains new physicians in clinical specialties, such as radiology,
pathology, surgery and internal medicine, to promote high standards of medical care now and in the years ahead.
We firmly believe that our health care ministry is as vital as ever. The Princeton campus is not just viable; it is thriving
and continues to be successful. Thank you for allowing us to serve your health care needs.
Sincerely,
Keith Parrott

Cardiovascular Care
Commitments to innovation and excellence are keystones of the cardiovascular program at Princeton
Baptist Medical Center. With the Princeton Heart and Vascular Institute recognized as a regional
referral center for cardiac care, the commitment is as strong today as when the program began
more than 30 years ago.
Princeton offers the area’s first Accredited Chest Pain Center, a
designation achieved through demonstrated expertise and commitment
to quality patient care.
New treatments for congestive heart failure (CHF) and peripheral artery disease are among the
strategies that keep Princeton at the forefront of heart care. Angiogenesis to attempt the creation
of new blood vessels for patients with cardiac or peripheral artery disease is achieving landmark
successes. Laser technology to treat patients with varicose veins and therapeutic hypothermia
for appropriate candidates of cardiac arrest are further examples of continuing innovation.
Recognizing that prevention is good medicine, Princeton participates in the HeartAware assessment
program. Through this innovative online evaluation, patients at risk for heart disease are identified
so that help can be provided. The evaluation is user-friendly: painless, 24-hour access at-yourfingertips, confidential and free! Identify your risk for heart disease at www.bhsala.com and rely
on Princeton to help you manage your heart health.
Expertise and care in the treatment of coronary artery disease has been recognized by the American
Heart Association – most recently with a Gold Performance Achievement Award – in its Get
With The Guidelines Initiative. This and other awards recognize Princeton’s commitment and success
in implementing a higher standard of cardiac care that effectively improves treatment of patients
with coronary artery disease. Optimal care demands technology partnered with expertise and
compassionate care. One example is a specially-designed, top notch Cardiac Electrophysiology
Laboratory that houses the latest technology and a staff specially trained in the implantation of
defibrillators, pacemakers and other treatments for patients with heart abnormalities.
19
Remaining at the forefront of good medicine is a longstanding commitment at Princeton, with
examples such as:
• Robotic surgery for coronary artery bypass and heart valve surgeries
• Nation’s first to use the “Mini Pump” to assist in both coronary bypass and heart valve surgeries
• Endo Stenting technology to repair thoracic aortic disease
• Introduced transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR) or “the Heart Laser System” in
Alabama for patients suffering from severe, stable angina, who are not candidates for conventional
techniques.

Cardiac Electrophysiology Service
The Electrophysiology Service at Princeton provides
a full range of outpatient and inpatient procedures to
diagnose and treat various cardiac rhythm abnormalities
and heart failure.
Electrophysiologic studies and ablations require 2 - 4
hours as catheters are guided into the heart chambers
while the patient is sedated. The catheters’ electrodes
gather data and a variety of electrical measurements
are made. These help the physician identify the type
and source of the rhythm abnormality and may help
determine the need for the implant of pacemakers and/or
implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).
The implant of pacemakers and ICDs is performed with
the patient in the sedated state. A small incision, usually
in the area of the left shoulder, is performed, and pacing
wires are advanced into the heart through large veins.
The wires are connected to the device generator which is
placed under the skin in the area of the incision. These
devices can perform a variety of important and life-saving
functions, including the corrections of slow or fast heart
rhythms, and may help improve heart failure symptoms.
When appropriate, ablation therapy can be performed
during the EP study. This non-surgical procedure treats
many types of arrhythmias by ablating or “altering” the
pathway that causes the disruption to the regular rhythm
of the heart.
For questions, call the Cardiac Cath/EP Lab
at 205-783-3231.
The Center for Therapeutic
Angiogenesis
Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels.
The Center for Therapeutic Angiogenesis, under the
direction of Princeton cardiologist Farrell Mendelsohn,
M.D., is dedicated to the research of protein, gene and
cell therapies that stimulate this process in patients with
cardiovascular disease.
Significant milestones in this research have been
achieved at Princeton. It was the first study site in
the world to administer a particular growth factor, and
the nation’s first to administer a new genetic medicine
designed to treat patients with peripheral artery disease
(PAD). Recently, Princeton was the first in the world to
treat a patient using a gene that attracts stem cells to
repair damaged heart muscle.
Princeton was the state’s first to inject a patient’s own
stem cells, or placebo, in a double-blind study on PAD
and again the state’s first to use a patient’s own stem
cells to treat a severe form of coronary artery disease.
More recently, stem cells derived from donors to combat
heart disease is now underway with participation in two
clinical trials. One trial uses adult stem cells donated
from healthy adults in an effort to repair damaged heart
muscle after a heart attack or myocardial infarction.
The other trial studies placenta-derived stem cells for
the treatment of peripheral artery disease. Princeton was
the first in the United States to treat a patient with these
cells.
Princeton cardiologists are using advanced techniques
with these novel stem cell therapies – therapies available
at only a few sites in the world.
For more information about current studies, call
205-780-4330, extension 234, or visit www.
CenterforTherapeuticAngiogenesis.org.

A Vital Community Partner
Since its beginnings in 1922, the role of Princeton has been that of community leader as well as healer. Today,
Princeton’s faith-based mission to provide for the physical, spiritual and social well-being of those it serves is as
strong as ever.
In answer to the call for caring, Princeton’s health care ministry is growing with a multi-million dollar
expansion underway to redesign and expand the hospital’s surgical facilities and other nearby clinical areas.
As the need for round-the-clock nursing care for elderly citizens increases, Princeton and others recently
participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction by Ball HealthCare of a nearly $16-million
nursing home on the hospital campus. Residents of the 117-bed Arlington Rehabilitation and Care Center will
enjoy easy access to Princeton’s physicians and specialty services. Dedicated beds for rehabilitation and routine
nursing care are among the types of care to be provided when construction is complete in about a year.
Princeton’s longtime support of education and literacy that earned it recognition as an education partner
continues. Activities to support the West End Regional Library’s growth, the Adopt-A-School program in
neighborhood schools, teacher appreciation programs and literacy training are just some of Princeton’s efforts
to help establish the area as a learning zone.
Participation continues with Discovery Clubs, a non-profit organization that partners with churches and schools
to host after-school Bible Clubs, and the highly successful Princeton Achievers, which introduces students
in grades 9 – 12 to careers in health care. Princeton’s involvement in innovative programs like the work/study
program at Holy Family Cristo Rey promotes not only education, but also broader career choices for area young
people.
Building relationships to serve the people of the community and their needs are evident as Princeton reaches
out to Her Choice and other support groups to help young women who struggle with health issues, such as teen
pregnancy and access to prenatal care.
Whether Princeton participates in community grassroots initiatives or multi-level government partnerships, the
goal is the same – the good of the community.
One such initiative is a convenient curb market to serve Princeton Towers and other neighborhood residents,
stocked with produce from the WE Community Garden, a project of Urban Ministry and Community Church
Without Walls with support from Birmingham-Southern.
Princeton – in the practice of good medicine and the good neighbor policy.

GI and Pulmonary Care
The GI/Endoscopy/Bronchoscopy Lab at Princeton brings together a group of board certified
gastroenterologists, pulmonologists and surgeons, who are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment
of gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders.
Sophisticated equipment enables our staff to evaluate both routine and complex diagnostic problems.
Princeton’s information systems put on-line test results readily at the fingertips of referring physicians –
to keep them involved in subsequent treatment decisions and the follow-up care of their patients.
This effective team approach has put Princeton at the forefront with such innovative procedures as the
Bravo pH monitoring procedure in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Princeton

Imaging Services
Princeton’s premier imaging center offers some of the most comprehensive, sophisticated imaging
technology in Alabama for diagnosis and treatment. Working closely with GE Healthcare helps Princeton
remain abreast of the newest applications and improvements for diagnostic imaging. One result: the best
work flow to accommodate patients and keep waiting time to the absolute minimum.
Princeton’s impressive array of imaging technology includes the GE Infinia Hawkeye 4, Open MRI, 3
Tesla MRI, digital mammography units, PET/CT, digital x-ray and state-of-the-art VCT to provide
Princeton’s specially-trained radiologists the tools for diagnostic imaging capabilities that equal or exceed
any available in Alabama. The Imaging Center offers a full range of outpatient diagnostic procedures
including:
Bone Densitometry – A technologically advanced radiographic procedure to determine bone mineral
density or bone mass and diagnose osteoporosis.
Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan – A CT scan or “cat scan” procedure images the body in crosssections and provides a very detailed look at internal structures and vessels. CT scans provide a clearer,
more accurate picture of the patient’s condition in only seconds. CTA (CT angiography) procedures are
used to evaluate vascular disease, such as aneurysms, peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery
disease.
Princeton’s newest generation of CT is Volume Computerized Tomography. VCT’s 64-slice imaging
technology offers greater image clarity, easier patient access and lower contrast dosage. Applications
include 5-Beat Cardiac™ for comprehensive views of the heart and arteries in just five heartbeats;
Triple RuleOut™ that in one scan helps rule out (or in) three of the most life-threatening critical
conditions in chest pain; Stroke Work-Up for rapid perfusion studies; and Cardiac Scoring, a unique
test to measure calcium in coronary arteries, which adds to plaque build-up and increases risk for heart
disease. Cardiac scoring takes minutes with results available within the hour. For specific questions about
VCT procedures, call 205-783-3282.
Diagnostic Radiology – Diagnostic radiology is the foundation for all other imaging tests. New digital
imaging equipment is much faster, and combined with our PACS technology, allows physicians secure,
direct online access to patients’ images and radiology reports throughout the hospital as well as in the
physician’s office or at home.
25
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – Princeton has both 3.0 and 1.5 Tesla GE magnets equipped
with high definition technology. MRI allows radiologists to view a patient’s internal structures in
a noninvasive way. Princeton’s Open-Bore MRI is more comfortable for patients who are extremely
overweight or claustrophobic. The new high definition, state-of-the-art Breast MRI takes imaging to
a new level to provide an outstanding degree of non-invasive imaging without radiation. The 3 Tesla MRA
provides a non-invasive accurate means of evaluating the vasculature and musculoskeletal anatomy for a
degree of detail previously ONLY attainable by invasive angiography AND without radiation.
Digital Mammography – Digital mammography is FDA-approved for screening and diagnosing breast
cancer. It offers images of outstanding quality, faster exams, increased detection rates and lower doses
of radiation. Senographe DS’s ergonomic design offers patients greater comfort and reduced stress;
while the use of the MammoPad® also adds to a patient’s comfort for a softer, warmer mammogram.
Computer Aided Detection gives the radiologist an “additional set of eyes” when reading mammograms.
Our services are accredited by the American College of Radiology and provided by board certified
physicians and certified radiological technologists.
Stereotactic (Non-Surgical) Breast Biopsy – This technique for breast biopsies is routinely performed
as an outpatient procedure. It is a key tool in identifying whether abnormalities detected in breast exams
and mammograms are benign or malignant. It is now also available using ultrasound guidance.
Nuclear Medicine/Heart Imaging – Nuclear Medicine or “cardiac stress testing” is a medical specialty
that requires very small doses of radioactive tracers often lower than those with an x-ray. Princeton’s
Infinia Hawkeye 4 excels in producing superior images of the heart.
Outpatient Myelogram – A specialized x-ray of the spine to detect blockage or decrease in cerebral
spinal fluid flow. It is most helpful in diagnosing tumors, damaged discs or changes in the bones
surrounding the spinal cord.
PET/CT - Positron Emission Tomography with Computerized Tomography provides exceptionally
detailed, three-dimensional computerized images to help doctors pinpoint the location of a suspected mass
of cells and determine if the cells are potentially cancerous. It also helps doctors determine what surgery
is needed, plan a surgical route and determine the best course of action. PET/CT offers applications for
neurology (e.g. refractory seizures and Alzheimer’s disease) and cardiology (e.g. myocardial viability and
myocardial perfusion). To schedule an appointment for a PET/CT, call 205-783-7979.
Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) – Therapeutic and palliative treatment for soft tissue and bone tumors
as well as tumor-related pain.
Ultrasound – A noninvasive procedure to create two-and three-dimensional images of any internal
organ. Ultrasound-directed biopsies and other ultrasound-guided procedures are available. Princeton’s GE
ultrasound equipment allows technologists to do “volume sweeps” of organs. Once images are sent to the
workstation, models can be created and formatted creating volume imaging of the pathology.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) – An innovative, less invasive, outpatient option to hysterectomies
for women with uterine fibroid tumors. With UFE, a specially trained radiologist injects small particles
through a catheter to block the flow of blood to fibroids. Deprived of oxygen and nutrients required to
grow, the fibroids shrink over time. For information, call Grace Dykes, R.N., 205-783-3274.

Vertebroplasty/
Kyphoplasty
Vertebroplasty is a non-surgical
procedure that injects liquid “bone”
cement into a compression fracture
or broken vertebrae. Shortly after
the injection, the cement-like
material hardens to create a
supportive structure for the
compressed vertebrae to prevent
further collapse and alleviate pain.
Kyphoplasty is a similar procedure
that places a balloon in the spine to
expand the space if the vertebrae
have collapsed. Particularly effective
with bone tumors, this procedure
creates space needed to insert
cement and better stabilize the
vertebrae.

appointments, call 205-783-7800.
Nursing Care
Since its beginnings, Princeton Baptist Medical Center has been one of Birmingham’s leading health care
providers and has demonstrated its commitment to providing outstanding patient care. From its earliest
days, nursing has played a vital role in this faith-based ministry.
When the Birmingham Baptist Association acquired the hospital in January 1922, the philosophy that the
patient was the most important person in the hospital was adopted.
The patient-focused philosophy continued when Ida V. Moffett became the hospital’s director of nursing
in 1941. During her 73-year-nursing career, Mrs. Moffett became and continues to be a symbol of
compassion for Princeton and Baptist Health System.
During the decades of her nursing leadership at the Baptist hospitals, she was a mentor to thousands
of nurses. She consistently communicated her loving concern and friendship to students, nurses and
coworkers. She instilled in them her high ideals and values concerning patient care. Her legacy continues
to serve as a role model for the nursing profession not only in Alabama, but also throughout the country.
In recognition of her contributions, Princeton each year recognizes performance excellence among its
nurses with the Ida V. Moffett Award.
It is that level of caring and compassion paired with clinical expertise that defines the standard of
excellence for Princeton’s nursing care. It is a standard ascribed to by its nurses; a call for commitment
and dedication to the well-being of each patient as well as their family.
Princeton nurses recognize the difference that caring nurses can make in the lives of patients. They’re proud
to be part of a multidisciplinary health care team whose goal is the highest quality of life for their patients.
Princeton nurses also understand the important contributions that patients and families can make as
members of the health care team. Their participation is appreciated; in fact, it’s encouraged. Princeton
recently established the Patient Action Line – PAL, as another response method to address the needs of
patients in providing the best possible care. A simple phone call to PAL allows a patient or family member
to reach a medical professional at any time.
Striving for excellence and caring with compassion are longstanding traditions at Princeton – traditions
Princeton nurses take very much to heart.

Orthopedic Care
A more active lifestyle demanded by a growing demographic of older Americans is increasing demand
for joint replacement surgeries. About 773,000 Americans have a hip or knee replaced each year, and
Princeton is performing increasing numbers of these procedures to relieve pain and restore mobility for
area residents.
Princeton’s team of orthopedic surgeons performs a variety of innovative procedures to help joints
damaged by arthritis, injuries or other causes. Following surgery, individualized rehabilitation gets patients
on the mend.
Princeton’s Hana Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Table – the first Birmingham hospital to offer this innovation –
is specifically designed for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery and offers new patient benefits. With
it, surgeons can better position the body to permit smaller incisions, resulting in less muscle trauma and
faster recovery times for patients. The new technology also allows for x-ray imaging during surgery to
more accurately control implant placement and leg length.
Procedures utilizing the new technology include:
• Anterior Total Hip Replacement
• Total Knee Replacement
• Oxford Partial Knee Replacement
• Hip Fracture Repair
• Tibia Nail or Femoral Nail Implant

Outpatient Rehabilitation
Physical Therapy - Occupational Therapy
Speech Therapy - Lymphedema Therapy
Outpatient Rehabilitation at Princeton provides
one-on-one care with development of individualized
programs to meet each patient’s needs. The focus
of physical and occupational therapy is to gain
pain-free movement, improve independence and
maximize function. With speech therapy, our goal
is to improve communication and cognitive skills as
well as swallowing function.
These services benefit patients with arthritis,
sports-related injuries, joint replacements,
weakness from medical conditions, impaired
balance, neurological problems, speech and
swallowing difficulties, as well as other disorders.
Services include:
Manual therapy techniques are used to decrease
pain and increase mobility of the spine and joints
throughout the body through skilled movements
and soft tissue mobilization.
Therapeutic exercise is used to help patients gain
pain-free mobility, strength, flexibility, endurance,
coordination, relaxation, and function.
Education is individualized for each patient to
increase understanding of their physical problems
and avoid pain and injury while performing their
normal activities.
31
Modalities are used in conjunction with other
treatments to improve function by reducing pain,
inflammation, swelling and stiffness. Available
modalities include cold/heat therapy, TENS,
interferential electrical stimulation, ultrasound,
neuromuscular electrical stimulation, iontophoresis
and paraffin.
Outpatient Rehabilitation now offers a

either primary lymphedema — caused by defects in
the lymphatic system — or secondary lymphedema,
resulting from traumatic injury, surgery, radiation
therapy, chronic inflammations, etc.
The Lymphedema Program’s certified therapists
help patients experience less swelling, pain, weakness,
stiffness, infections and skin breakdown. The goal is
to improve function and quality of life by decreasing
pain and swelling as well as restoring mobility and
strength for those with this chronic disease.

Wound Care
Chronic wounds are seldom lifethreatening, but can be painful
and, in some cases, can lead
to lower limb amputations.
Healing — not just treating — a
chronic wound is the goal of the
Baptist Wound Care program
at Princeton. Care begins
with a complete history and
physical examination followed
by appropriate lab and imaging
studies. In a multidisciplinary
team approach with the patient
as part of the team, physicians
from various specialties then
determine the best course of
action and treatment.
The clinic specializes in
healing chronic wounds,
