The University of Birmingham Sport has an extensive programme of exercise classes and is the largest
of its kind in the UK. Classes are available to students and staff of the University of Birmingham,
members of the Munrow Sports Centre and community non-members. There are Dance, Toning,
Aerobic, Holistic, Aqua and Specialist classes to choose from and they are suitable for all abilities,
some with a choice of beginner or intermediate levels. The emphasis is to exercise in a fun and friendly
environment, which encourages people to join in, meet new friends, and find something that they enjoy
doing! Check out the benefits of taking part in GROUP EXERCISE:
Get active!
Get healthy!
Pushing boundaries: A class can help you
move past a plateau —perfect if you want
to push yourself a little bit and improve.
Body image: Exercise not only helps
to change your body shape, but improves
how you see yourself. Look better,
feel better.
Get happy!
Physical benefits: Physical activity
can improve fitness, strength, flexibility,
general health and body composition.
Psychological lifts: Being physically
active can bolster good mental health and
can help you to manage stress, anxiety
and even depression.
Meet your community: Fitness classes
are a wonderful place to meet people who
have similar lifestyle goals and needs.
Buddy up: Find someone who attends
the same class and use each other as
a motivator to attend each week.
FREE CLASS WEEK
We have introduced a FREE CLASS WEEK at the beginning of the Autumn and Spring terms where anyone can book a class
for FREE. It’s a great way to try a class that you might not have tried before and get a feel for the Active Lifestyle Programme.
Follow the ‘How to book’ steps on page 12. Places are restricted and only available on a first come, first served basis.
FREE CLASS WEEK – Autumn
Monday 24 September – Sunday 30 September 2012

Astanga Yoga
This is a vigorous and athletic style of yoga, which involves
synchronising the breath with a progressive series of postures –
a process producing intense internal heat and purifying sweat
that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved
circulation, a light and strong body, and a clam mind.

Aqua Zumba
NEW CLASS!
Aqua zumba gives new meanin
g to the idea of an
invigorating workout. Splash
ing, stretching, twisting,
laughing are all components
of an aqua zumba
class. Aqua zumba blends the
zumba formula with
traditional aqua disciplines
into a safe, challenging wor
kout
that’s cardio conditioning, bod
y toning and exhilarating!
Benefits of exercising in water:
oReduces
the risk of muscle or joint injury as your weight is 40%
less in water than on land
oGreat toning potential as water has 12 times the resistance of air, and
this resistance is applied in both directions, so each movement works
two muscle groups
oResearch has shown that aqua classes are good for physical and mental
well being, and improves mobility and body image
oThe supportive environment of water is good for those with poor balance
oThe continuous cooling of the body prevents overheating when exercising
