President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
I
n the last few months or so, I have had to address a
weakness of mine, twice actually. This affliction of
mine needs to be carefully managed to prevent my
descent into personal poverty and the ire of my lovely wife. Plus, there’s the
issue that my kids want to go to college too. The weakness I’m talking about is
old cars, which in this case is a modern classic and a car that is older than me.
Before Christmas I was ready to fly to San Diego and buy a 1965 Cadillac
Coupe De’Ville. If you haven’t seen one, it is one of the last “finned” Cadillacs
and is exactly 18 feet, 7 inches long and with only two doors. For perspective,
it’s basically two MINI Coopers long. This is a car with presence, with style,
made when designers ran GM and not accountants. It takes “cool” and gives it
a “wedgie.” It doesn’t roll, it glides. It … okay, you can see this is a problem for
me. I was going to “see” this car on a business trip which was rescheduled, and
then the car was sold so I dodged a bullet this time. However, I do know that
the visceral need for a ‘65 Cadillac is not gone, it’s just back in the box for now.
Several months later I came across a 1992 BMW M5, with only 80 thousand
miles. It had been stored for several years and was for sale in Hyannis, which
you know is in Massachusetts and much closer than San Diego. You also need
to know that the first BMW that I owned was a 93 M5. It was the car I noticed
when my school friends were into Ferraris and is one of two cars I regret selling.
The pictures of this one looked great and I made arrangements to go see the
car with my wife’s blessing to buy it if it was the “one.” I must admit that I was
ready to buy the car sight unseen, but when I got there the reality of a 20 year
old car became more and more apparent as I looked it over. It would need new
paint, a door card and a new headliner at the very least. I took it for a test drive
and after letting the oil warm up, I opened the taps a little and … was disappointed. It didn’t have the magic that I remember from my ’93 car. But then we
got up over 4000 RPM and my memory was rewarded with that freight train
surge. This car was stock and didn’t have some of the modifications that my old
M5 had including a suspension upgrade.
It was looking promising but then I started adding up what I would need to
spend after I bought the car to make it right. The math was getting beyond good
sense unless the owner would let it go at a considerable discount. I returned to
the lot and talked through what I felt the car needed and made a fairly low bid,
which the owner politely declined. I went home with my check book intact, but
feeling a little sad and hoping that I had not let a good opportunity slip through
my fingers. The owner never did call back, and so for a while at least that M5
fever is back in the box, where hopefully it will play nice with the Cadillac.
I wanted to share this “problem” with you because I think there are many
of us that want to own one of those classic cars from earlier in our lives, to
be a good care taker for a machine that deserves to be preserved and most
of all driven. The memories that are tied up in a car, whether we owned it or
not are also important to preserve and perhaps relive. So, search those classified ads and web sites for the “‘one” you are looking for and bring home
a classic BMW or the car that fulfils your dreams. If you’re lucky, you may
even find something that someone else in your life will also love, so tell a
friend, pass it on. ♦

BIMMERS ACROSS THE BORDER XV
Mt. Tremblant, Canada
Friday, August 2nd to Sunday, August 4th
S
et your calendars for the Ultimate Family
Vacation – the 15 th Annual Boston Chapter/
Quebec Chapter Bimmers Across the Border
XV - Driving School at the incredible Le Circuit
Mont Tremblant and Tremblant Resort. The setting is the European-style
resort village Mont Tremblant nestled in the splendor of the Laurentian
Mountains; Mont Tremblant is located just 90 miles northwest of Montréal.
This is the perfect vacation getaway for the entire family. The driving enthusiasts’ have the world class racetrack and everyone else has a world
class resort all within a radius of only 2 miles! Come early, stay late, and
bring your friends … you can easily spend a week without getting bored.
The area features fine restaurants, shopping, and over 100 miles of protected trails for biking, skateboarding, and roller blading. There are two
great golf courses, an aquatics center and spa, and a beautiful lake with a
large beach. There are activities for the entire family.
The Track:
This village is only 10 minutes away from the world
class Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Built in 1964 in the shadow of the majestic Mont-Tremblant, the picturesque and twisty 15-corner 2.65-mile
track was completely rebuilt and upgraded in 2001. It is two meters
wider all around with extensive runoff areas everywhere. Le Circuit
Mont-Tremblant has been upgraded to meet FIA vintage Formula racing
safety standards. If you loved the track before, you won’t believe it now!
Situated in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world for a race track,
the layout is a classic, as it combines the natural topography of the site with
elevation changes from the start/finish line, to corner 8 and back again. The
track is bordered by Lake Moore and Devil River (La Diable).
We have worked very hard to provide an exceptional amount of track
time each day. Advanced solo students will get 2 hours of track time each
day on Saturday and Sunday and over 2.5 hours on Friday (if you sign up
for the additional day). Novice and intermediate will get over 2 hours each
Saturday and Sunday with a bit more time for soloed intermediate students
possible on Sunday afternoon. Please note: there is an imposed sound limit
of 92db and the 30 car limit per session for this event.
Registration:
This is our premiere event of the year. Please use the
Online Registration system to register for this event, but remember: ALL
students may register for Saturday and Sunday. ONLY intermediate and
advanced students are all welcome to register for Friday.
We use PayPal for driving school registration fees. You will be accepted
into the school after we receive your payment. Your date of registration
will be your online filing date, provided you send payment via PayPal for
the proper amount within three days of our request for payment. Complete
guidelines on registration including refund deadlines can be found on the
Chapter website at boston-bmwcca.org.♦
Membership Corner:
Building a network of friends
by Eric Kaul
I
have been to or passed by Dave Bluestein’s preowned Bimmer shop in West Quincy, MA (Foreign
Motorcars, Inc.) so many times in the past four years,
that I cannot pinpoint with certainty the date that I first
stopped by to say hello. However, I can assure you that
I met him shortly after he moved to our neighborhood
in early 2009, and long before I became the Membership Chair for the Boston Chapter in late 2010. When
we first met, I was living a consultant’s life, flying out
Sunday night and flying home late on Thursday. So my
weekends started on Fridays, and after dropping the
dry cleaning off early, I’d invariably try to swing by
any local shop that might house a Bimmer enthusiast
to strike up a conversation. When I found out that Dave
was a longtime member of the BMW CCA, that was an
added bonus! As time went by, I appreciated the fact
that Dave enjoyed our conversations about cars and
the insertion of some BMW CCA camaraderie into his
business of selling cars, so I made it a point to drop by
every week.
Sharing the ride
It should come as no surprise, that I wanted my next
Bimmer to be one of “his“cars; and each week, he’d
throw me the keys to one of his cool project cars and
candidly ask my opinion on what I thought it needed. I
must say that until I met Dave, I had not driven the 2002
or an E21 320i, E36 M3, E39 525i, or E46 M3. Thanks
to Dave’s generosity and friendship, I gained intimate
first hand driving experience with each of these cars,
and a majority of pre-2007 BMWs and MINIs (with the
exception of the last generation 7 series). To this day,
when I meet new members or longtime members for
the first time, I can relate and share vivid tales of my
driving experiences with some of the classic Bimmers
that Dave let me take for a spin. They were the cars that
gave rise to BMW’s reputation as “The Ultimate Driving Machine.”
Those driving experiences made possible by Dave
and the ability to continually connect with a diverse
cross section of our membership are only a few of the
great aspects of our mutual friendship.
These days, I live and work a somewhat normal life,
(albeit with two kids, three dogs, a mortgage and a fleet
of fun cars) and no air travel. So naturally I have plen-
tiful opportunities to stalk prospective members when
they least expect it (at the gas station, in far corners of
parking lots or in line at Starbucks). Given the opportunity to talk with some of the great members of our
club, I’m always eager to speak the praises of Dave.
He is passionate about the marquee, and uses his shop
resources to help members troubleshoot technical car
issues and review CarFax reports on used BMWs &
MINIs outside New England. He has also been known
to open up his shop on an evening or weekend to help
a member caught up in a breakdown situation with no
one else was available. In short, I’ve always been impressed by how helpful Dave has been with me and
BMW CCA members when we aren’t necessarily coming his way to buy a CPO/used Bimmer or MINI.
Making one person’s dream a reality
For those of you who know (or don’t know) the story
behind how my E36 M3 came to me – it was Dave who
was in cahoots with Alvin of Import Autowerks and my
wife Anjali, who surprised me with my beloved 1995
E36 M3 for my first Fathers’ Day in 2011. Dave knew
that I had been looking for an M3 to turn into a track
car, but that wasn’t the type of car that normally gets
traded in at his shop – until June of 2011. Within three
days of getting the car on his lot (and getting my attention) he got it inspected (by Alvin), detailed by a
local shop and worked with Anjali to get it insured and
registered so that I could enjoy it on Day 1. Yes, it was
a business deal, but it was also an act of friendship. He
knew what I wanted and worked with my wife to make

Review of equipment part of program
There were many questions from the audience on what
equipment you need to have to participate at the various levels, what skills are required and most of all what
are the expectations for a student’s performance. It was
emphasized that there are no tests or quizzes at the end
of any of these school events. The only judge of your
performance will be your own expectations. The Chapter conducts these events to help our members learn
and progress. You will end any of these events with a
new appreciation of your car’s abilities and your own
abilities to control its actions. ♦
Venues for 2013 driving events
A
track to a person hooked on driving
is sort of like a famous golf course to a
golfer. There’s nothing like your home
course, but let’s face it, variety is the spice
of life. That’s exactly why the Boston Chapter has developed relationships with different
venues and offers programs annually at 3 or
more different tracks. Some of these locations
are legendary, but each offers a unique experience. Here are the tracks that will host
Chapter events in 2013.
Deven’s Airport, Ayer, MA
While technically not a track, this venue has
consistently delivered some of the most exciting and challenging Autocross courses in the
North East. Located on the former Fort Devens Army Airfield near Ayer, MA, the course
changes for each event, guaranteeing members a great ride. Full directions to the sight
are available on the Autocross section of the
Chapter website. No gas or food is on sight,
but is nearby.
New Hampshire Motor Speedway
New Hampshire Motor Speedway is the Boston Chapter’s home track and is an excellent
choice for your first track day since it presents
a wide example of corners and the speeds are
controlled. Famous for its NASCAR oval, the
Boston Chapter actually runs a road course
configuration on this track which uses the
straights from the oval, and often one of the
big banked turns as well. This 12 turn 1.6 mile
circuit is fun and challenging, with elevation changes and nearly continuous turning.
NHMS is about 1.25 hours north of Boston.
Take I-93 North to Concord, NH, then take
exit 15E onto I-393 West. Next, take Exit 3 onto
NH route 106, turning left to go North toward
Loudon, NH. The track is 9 miles on your right.
You can drive up for events or you can opt to
go up the night before and stay at a local motel
in Loudon or Concord, NH. You can consult
the track’s lodging recommendations at www.
nhms.com. On the day of the event, the track’s
Checkered Flag restaurant is usually open for
breakfast and lunch.
– continued on the next page
www.boston-bmwcca.org | 13
Watkins Glen International
Watkins Glen International is a 3.45 mile road course located in the
middle of New York State at the tip of Lake Seneca. Its rich racing
heritage is famous as are the track’s long straights and high speeds
coupled with extensive elevation changes. While it has about the
same number of turns as NHMS, it is a bit more intimidating due
to the higher speed potential of the long straights. While fast, the
track is interesting in that almost all of the turns stand alone and the
classic “line” applies. Many drivers say this is their favorite track to
drive in the world.
WGI is about 7 hours west of Boston, so plan accordingly! There
are many historic racing sights to see starting with the bar at the
rustic Seneca Lodge, which has many historic racing mementos and
has been the hangout for decades of famous racing drivers. It is also
fun to take a trip around the original track which runs through the
streets and roads of the town. There are lots of places to stay nearby
besides the Seneca Lodge, and you’ll get a chance to try out a variety
of places to eat since there isn’t anything at the track itself.
Le Circuit Mont Tremblant
Built in 1964 in the shadow of the majestic Mont-Tremblant, this
picturesque and twisty 15-corner track has been described by some
as 2.65 miles of the Nurburgring transplanted into Canada. Situated in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world, the Le Circuit
Mont Tremblant (LCMT) layout is a classic. It combines the natural
topography of the site with elevation changes from the start/finish
line to corner 8 and back. The course has a very challenging hill/
turn combination, a hair-pin turn, and fast straights. LCMT combines the speed of WGI with the technical nature of NHMS. It also
offers the unique chance to combine a family vacation with a track
experience. Located in Quebec near the European-style resort village of Mont Tremblant in the Laurentian Mountains, it is located
just 90 miles northwest of Montréal. Within a two mile radius of the
track, you will find fine restaurants, shopping, golf, a spa, and over
100 miles of protected trails for biking, skateboarding, and roller
blading. There is also a large lake that offers swimming, boating
and a full aquatic program.
Mont Tremblant is about 7 hours northwest of Boston. The challenge to getting there is the trip through Montreal and don’t forget
the Passports! French lessons are optional. All tracks have sound
limits, but the sound limits at LCMT are strictly enforced. During
most events, the Sound Pressure Level limit is 92dBA, measured
at 50’.

Racing update
T
here were two big news announcements since my last
column was written. ALMS
and Grand-Am announced the
structure of their new combined
organization, United SportsCar
Racing which will be sanctioned
by IMSA. They also announced
that they had the blessing of
the LeMans sanctioning group
from France so they will have
automatic entries for their topteams into the 24 Hours du
Mans each year. An even bigger
event from my perspective was
the announcement that United
SportsCar has signed an agreement to bring the German DTM
series to the US starting in 2015.
This will bring BMW, Audi and
Mercedes racing to the US and
possibly attract GM and Ford to
develop cars for the series. It
could be the start of a new era
in sports car racing for the US.
The racing season is off to a
great start with two major races
since the traditional first event
of the year, the 24 Hours of
Daytona. The ALMS 12 Hours
of Sebring brought the first
race for the new BMW Z4 GTE.
The two RLL cars ran up front
all race and were leading until
a couple of mechanical issues
slowed them down late in the
race. They ended up 4 th and 7 th.
It was a good initial outing for
the new car. In the other half of
the soon to be combined championships, the Daytona winning
BMW Riley finished third at
the new US Grand Prix track
in Austin, TX while the Boston
Chapter’s own Turner Motor
Sports won the Grand Sport
class race with their BMW M3. It
was a great recovery after their
miserable race in Daytona. ♦
Tales from the home front: Itsy bitsy issues with the i8 Spyder
T
– by Ross Schold
he i8 Spyder has graced the
cover of Roundel several
times as well as making a
cameo appearance in the latest installment of the Mission Impossible
series. With all this exposure my
kids have decided that I need to
get my hands on the concept car
just as soon as it is available. They have assured me
that the estimated base price of $150,000 is reasonable
because it comes with 2 electric kick board scooters
mounted in the back. While this does not help me justify the cash outlay I’m fairly certain it goes a long way
in convincing pre-teen boys that it is a solid investment.
However, aside from the price point there are quite a
few issues with their suggestion, but I only have time
to cover the brutally obvious ones.
Issue # 1: I’m not sure I fit the mold of the target
demographic, and I mean this in both the literal and
figurative senses. I have drawn this conclusion because
each time I see one of these machines featured in advertising it is accompanied by a very “Secret Agent”
looking male who appears to be straight out of GQ
Magazine. Besides not getting a call for a GQ photo
shoot I rarely partake in any activity that is remotely
spy-like. (Even if I am a spy, I wouldn’t be able to tell
you … because its spy stuff ... so you have to trust me
on this.)
Issue # 2:
My version of Mission Impossible is
getting a 9 year-old home from little league practice
without having him grind his bubble gum encrusted
cleats into the floor mats. In the past I have also accepted the mission of trying to avert a catastrophic
meltdown of sorts when said 9 year-old is ready to
spill sports drink across the center console. In the i8 that would
actually be spilled on the “Energy
Tunnel” connecting the electric
motor up front with the 3 cylinder
turbocharged engine in the back –
delivering the full hybrid driving
experience.
“Great! – Don’t worry kids it’s only the housing for
the lithium ion batteries. What’s the worst that could
happen?”
I can only picture cutting edge German technology
crippled by a bright red advanced electrolyte delivery
system – aka- Gatorade Fruit Punch.
Issue # 3: The car is impressive, but it is a little short
on seating positions. My current family responsibilities
require that I drag along more than one youngster on
most days. The only advantage I see to this is that I
would no longer have to listen to them argue about who
is riding “Shotgun.”
I have voiced these concerns to my young team of
automotive advisors, yet they seem undeterred. They
are ready to go pick up the car as soon as it hits the
local dealer showroom. I’m not sure I have the heart to
tell them that my little issues outlined above are what
we call “Deal Breakers.” For now they will just have
to focus their bubble gum and Gatorade efforts on my
current 530ixt. ♦
Editor’s note: Ross Schold has been a
BMW CCA member since the spring
of ‘08. Ross lives with his wife Tara
and three sons Jack, Ben and William
in Wakefield, RI. His latest BMW is a
2006 530xit. In the past he has owned a
2000 528it, ‘86 325es and an 88 535is.

Philes’ Forum: Investigating the blower issue, Part 2

Rock Park, and I considered
Trip to be one of my mentors
when I was being evaluated for
instructorship myself.
Anyhow, Trip provided the
correct answer as to what the
“thing” under the resistors is.
It is a bi-metal temperature
switch that is supposed to shut
off power to the blower motor
when it is operating at reduced speeds and if an overtemperature condition exists in the HVAC intake
plenum. Trip went so far as to study the BMW electrical schematic for the E30 in order to understand
why the over-temp switch only affects Speeds 1-3 on
the blower. Thanks, Trip, for taking the time to email
me with the answer.
ello, Bimmerphiles! In the last installment of
Philes’, I was telling you about how I went about
diagnosing a problem with the HVAC (HeatingVentilating-Air Conditioning) blower on my M3. The
blower worked just fine on maximum speed, but did
not work at all on Speeds 1-3.
I had diagnosed the problem down to the blowerresistor assembly, but hadn’t yet determined what
exactly on the assembly was causing the intermittent
lack of Speeds 1-3. Photo #1, repeated from the last
Philes’, shows the blower-resistor assembly (AKA resistor block) removed from the car.

unusual for the BMW 6 Series including all three generations of this big, sexy coupe to be featured in these
shows. Why are they so “elegant?” Look for yourself
as we look back at the 6 Series heritage and just for
good measure, we will also look at the E9 Coupes, the
predecessor to the 6 Series and one of the loveliest
BMWs ever made. These are some of the most elegant
cars ever made by BMW. In fact, the BMW Mobile
Tradition’s book on these cars is titled “The Perfect
Line” and subtitled “BMW Coupes—A Tradition of
Elegance.” Why is that? Take a closer look.
The Ancestry
BMW’s history of big coupes goes back; way back.
The first of the line was the 327 and 327/28, the later
designating a 327 with the more powerful engine of
the contemporary 328 sports/racing car. The 327 was
built from 1937 to 1941, the war shortening its run.
Only 1,396 327s were built, counting both coupes and
cabriolets. Only 569 327/28s in both coupe and convertible form were built. All were built at BMW’s Eisenach
plant. The 327 had the flowing fender lines typical of
the 1930s which were often complemented by two-tone
exterior paint. And while the 328 was a Spartan sport/
racing car, the 327 was a luxurious touring car.
The 327 was powered by an inline six-cylinder engine of 2 liters. The smooth straight six was a BMW
tradition that had started in 1933 with the 303, the car
that also sported the first kidney grills. Both traditions
20 | Boston Bimmer • April / May 2013
would last for decades. And like many coupes, convertible versions were also built and also very popular.
After the cessation of hostilities, the Eisenach plant
was in Eastern Germany, controlled by the Soviets.
The plant resumed making BMWs including 327s.
The real BMW Company in Munich protested and the
Eisenach factory became the Eisenach Motor Works
and a few more EMW 327s were built in the late 1940s
and early 1950s.
The next model in the line of big beautiful coupes
was the BMW 503 built from 1956 to 1959. The 503 was
built in both coupe and convertible forms. It was built
during the same period as the much more famous BMW
507. Both the 503 and 507 were designed by Albrecht
Graf Goertz under contract to BMW. Both models used
an aluminum V8 and most of the other running gear
and suspension components were shared.
As the 328 tended to overshadow the 327, the 507
overshadowed the 503. But in both cases, the dowdy,
unflashy sister was a beauty too, albeit more subtle.
Alas, the production runs for both the 503 and 507
were terribly short, partially because BMW lost money
on every one and more because BMW’s overall financial situation was precarious. They were rare when
new and are even rarer today. In the end only 273
coupes were built and 139 convertibles.
The successor to the 503 was another BMW beauty:
the 3200 CS, making the first use of the Coupe Sport
designation. The V8 engine was used again but this
time the styling was by Bertone. The 1500 New Class
had been introduced in 1961 and featured the Hofmeister Kink, the forward bend in the C-pillar. Bertone
adopted this in his design for the 3200 CS.
It enhanced an already beautiful car.
Unfortunately, Bertone also built the
bodies for BMW, by hand, and the quality was awful. The production run, from
1962 to 1965, totaled only 603 units. A
prototype convertible was built—a beauty—but it was not put into production.
In the early 1960s BMW was finally
finding its footing with the Quandts recapitalizing the company and bringing
in competent management. The success
of the New Class was followed up by the
next in the line of Big Coupes: the 2000
C and 2000 CS. The design was done
in-house by Wilhelm Hofmeister, BMW
Director of Design. Often mistakenly
called the E9, the 2000 C/CS is actually
Type 120 in the old BMW project numbering scheme. Total production was 13,691.
The 2000 C/CS had a number of shortcomings. It was underpowered with only
a 2-liter four-cylinder engine. The build
quality was rather poor; it was built by
Karmann and rust came factory-installed.
And the wraparound headlights made the
car, well, homely. But this Ugly Duckling
would soon become a swan.
E9 Coupes
Most of the shortcomings of the 2000
C/CS were addressed in the E9 Coupes
built from 1968 to 1975. The wraparound
headlights were dispensed with, replaced
with quad-headlights that became a BMW
signature. The rest of the body needed
nothing as this one change transformed
the coupe into a future classic. The change
from four cylinders to six helped make
the coupe a reasonable performer too.

The rust issue, well, it remained to bedevil owners
forevermore. There was a 2.5-liter version in Europe
but the U.S got the 2800 CS and later the 3.0 CS, while
Europe got the fuel injected 3.0 CSi. The lightweight
CSL—Coupe Sport Light—was the most desirable.
And for racing purposes a CSL with lots of aerodynamic add-ons made for a car that was less pretty but
was so outlandish that is became a legend as “The Batmobile.” A nice one will run you $150,000 today. The
total run of E9s of all types was 30,546.
6 Series, 1st Generation
The successor to the E9 was the first generation 6 Series, as BMW went to a new model naming system, one
that returned to the three-digit model numbers used in
the 1930s. The 6 Series was introduced in spring 1976
as part of a new model offensive that included introduction of the 3, 5 and 7 Series in a short period of time.
While most BMW models have a seven year lifespan,
the E24 6 Series was sold for a remarkable fourteen
years, from model years 1976 through 1989. The really amazing part is that the 6er styling looked good
for that whole time span. The big BMW coupes have
always been long-legged, sexy, grand tourers. The 6
Series was all that. The big coupe had a back seat best
suited to double amputees but for two people it was
an autobahn-burner that oozed style.
The designer of the E24 was Paul Bracq, a Frenchman that was the chief designer at BMW at the time.
The early 6 Series bodies were built at Karmann, continuing a tradition of poor quality. BMW soon got fed
up with Karmann and brought body production inhouse in about 1977.
Every 6 Series model used an inline six-cylinder engine but there were many variations on the theme. The
engine size was denoted in the last two digits of the
model name. These included 630CS, 628CSi, 633CSi
and 635CSi. Towards the end of the run the 24-valve
head from the M1 was fitted, the result being the
M635CSi in Europe and the M6 in the U.S.
The Hiatus

• The BMW E63, 6 Series , 2003-2010
• The BMW E64, 6 Series , 2004-2010
• The BMW F12 6 Series , 2011- present
The successor to the E24 was the E31 8 Series. BMW
made the decision to go upmarket in terms of size,
price and luxury. While the 8 Series was built from
1989 to 1999, it never achieved much commercial
success. That’s probably for a number of reasons including its weight (more than the contemporary 7
Series) and price.
6 Series, 2nd Generation
BMW introduced an all-new 6 Series in 2003 (as a 2004
model), the E63. This was followed the next year with a
22 | Boston Bimmer • April / May 2013
convertible version, the E64. Initially, only a V8 engine
was offered but later a six-cylinder was introduced for
non-U.S. markets. In late 2005, the M6 models were
added in both coupe and convertible form. Power
came from a V10 engine shared with the M5.
While the 6 Series shared many components with
the contemporary 5 and 7 Series, in the 6 Series the
emphasis was much more on performance and less on
practicality. Pricing rivaled the 7 Series and M6s had
sticker prices in excess of $100,000. This certainly ensured exclusivity.
The styling of the second generation 6 Series is
based on the 1999 Z9 concept car. The Z9 was designed
by Adrian van Hooydonk while Chris Bangle was Director of BMW Group Design. Van Hooydonk would
become Bangle’s successor in the top design job. Van
Hooydonk adapted his own concept car design to the
production E63 and E64. You might read on the internet somewhere that the 6 Series was designed by
Bangle but Bangle was Director of Design; he didn’t do
any specific vehicle designs during his tenure at BMW.
In any case, the new 6 had the long hood, short rear
deck proportions of the old E24 and of all of BMW’s
big coupes. But the E63/64 took the performance to a
level that could only be dreamed of by E24 fans. And
at the same time, the E63/64 is an extremely luxurious car and a grand tourer in the BMW tradition. The
E63/64 was produced from 2003 through 2010.
6 Series, 3rd Generation
The third generation 6 Series was introduced in 2011
as a 2012 model. The coupe is known as the F12 and
the convertible is the F13. The convertible remains a
fabric top despite the trend to folding hardtops.
The design of the F12/F13 is clearly evolutionary
rather than revolutionary. The proportions remain
mostly unchanged but the somewhat controversial
rear end of the E63/64 has been cleaned up and there
is a trend back to more classic BMW styling, styling
reminiscent of pre-Bangle BMWs. The design brief for
the car was “athletic, elegant and modern.”
The exterior designer is Nader Faghihzadeh, who
penned the coupe, cabrio and upcoming Gran Coupe.
The Gran Coupe, the third member of the 6 Series,
will be BMW entry in the “four-door coupe” market
and will compete with the Mercedes CLS and Audi
A7. The 6 Series’ interior designer is Christian Bauer.
In BMW’s process, the exterior and interior designers
work together to create harmony between the inside
and outside of the vehicle. This is particularly important for the convertible.
Current engines for the 6 Series are either an in-line
six or a V8. This generation’s M6 gets a V8, the previous generation’s V10 now a part of BMW history.
The pace of progress
What has been the pace of progress over three generations of 6 Series? Let’s compare the M6, the top
performer. For the E24 M6 the top speed was 155 mph
and the zero to 60 mph time was 6.8 seconds. For the
current M6 the top speed is electronically limited to
155 mph. But the zero to 60 time is now 4.2 seconds!
And this is for a car that weighs over 4,200 pounds.
Expect the typical seven year life for the F12/13
with a mid-life “impulse” of some styling changes
and technical upgrades. In the meantime we’ll see the
Gran Coupe in showrooms very soon. And we should
look forward to the fourth generation 6 Series in about
2018; continuing the tradition of BMW’s big, beautiful coupes. ♦

AAn earlyreview
of
the
M6
Convertible
morning drive makes a big impression
– Story and photos by Kamil Kaluski
I
n December of 2011, I reviewed the BMW 650i Convertible.
I found it to be a proper grand touring car, but despite its
400-horsepower engine it left something for the true enthusiast
to desire. Recently I had the opportunity to drive the M6 Convertible. I was really curious if, despite being a heavy convertible,
BMW could work its M magic to make this a proper enthusiast
car.
At first the car it didn’t feel any different than the 650i. The
steering feel was similar, the suspension felt the same, and it
didn’t even feel faster. I began to feel disappointed; I was convinced that BMW is just using its M brand and image to make
money. Heck, even the twin-turbo V8 in the M is related to the
engine in the 650i. I was disappointed.
After driving a bit I started fiddling with the steering, suspension, and engine dynamics settings. The steering got progressively
tighter, ride stiffer, and the throttle more responsive. But again,
the 650i has similar features, also with three settings each. On the
M however, those settings seemed to be a notch or two higher.
For example, what is called the “sport” setting on the 650i was
the “comfort” setting on the M6. But despite all this, I was still a
bit disappointed. Yes, it was fast, really fast, but there is more to
a sports car than just power and speed. So I parked the car that
Sunday afternoon, feeling a little disappointed.
Fast forward to Sunday morning, two o’clock in the morning.
My five month old son thought it would be just hilarious if he
woke up everyone at the house only to go back to sleep once
everyone was fully awaken. At that point I could have just gone
24 | Boston Bimmer • April / May 2013
back to sleep, but it’s not everyday that I
have a 560-horsepower car sitting in my garage. I decided to do what every other sane
man would do – I went for a drive.
There was no one on the roads. No. One.
First, I drove around the city a bit. More
fiddling with the settings, got the top down,
cruised. Awesome, but so was the 650i. Got
out on the highway – yup, it’s still fast, as in
really fast. But it’s not just high speed fast,
but how fast it gets to those speeds. It delivers arresting speed in the time “normal” cars
require to crack the three-digit point. Furthermore, once at speed it’s how stable and almost innocent it feels.
Reducing the speed comes courtesy of front 6-piston fixed clamping
calipers 15.7″ and 4-piston rear fixed calipers clamping 15.6″ rotors;
that’s hard-core track hardware (no squeaky track pads) which looks
as good as it feels.
But wait, there is more! The three separately adjustable setting are
all fine and dandy, but on the steering wheel there is the infamous M
button, which I had all but forgotten about by now. In an improvement
over the E90 M3, which I have come to know intimately on several occasions, the new M6 has two programmable M settings, and before the
M mode is engaged you are asked for a confirmation. But seriously,
what kind of a difference could a little button make?
Oh. My. God!! I don’t really know what the M mode does, nor do I
really care. But what I do know what it does to the car – it shrinks it
down and transforms it into sports car! But there is more; the stability
control is loosened up allowing for some tail wagging which will make
you, the driver, look like a driving god! I don’t know what the hell
kind of black magic BMW performs on these cars but with a press of a
button this car simply transforms. Remember that TopGear review of
the E60 M5 where Clarkson said that it turns into a different car with
a press of a button? He wasn’t lying!
While the car is amazing in each and every way, it does not defy
physics. Compared to the E90 M3 is feels about a foot wider and significantly heavier, which becomes apparent rather quickly. I doubt that
the M6 will be anyone’s track car, nor does it aspire to be. What it is,
however, is two cars in one. It is a comfortable and reserved grand
touring car for daily trips or weekend trips, and a badass stupidly
fast sports car for those special moments. Its $125,000 price tag will
make you cringe until you look at the similarly priced Porsche 911
Cab, Aston Martin, and other convertible four-seaters. It is then that
you realize that the M6 will not only outperform all of those cars, but
simply destroy them while delivering quality and features that the others don’t offer. Yes, I would take the M6 over an equally priced 911. ♦

Test drive notes
• The shifter is not intuitive to
use and sometimes annoying.
• The transmission now has
three settings, versus the
seven of the E90 DCT.
• Seats have a weird butt massage feature, only on the
lower cushion of the seat,
which feels a little weird.
• Head up display is awesome,
tells speed, nav, and tach. It
is also adjustable for height
and brightness.
• Engine auto-stop is defeatable and once turned off it
will stay that way. This feature is really annoying, not
smooth, and currently on all
new Bimmers.
• It is still a wolf in sheep’s
clothing. Despite the many
M badges, you don’t get
anymore looks than when
driving a pedestrian 6-series.
That’s a good thing.
• Did I mention how amazing
the overall package is? If you
think that BMW has lost their
way this maybe the car that
will turn you around. Yes, it’s
fast, but it’s more driver focused in everything it does
than any other car out there.

Hankook Z214 C91 275/35ZR18. Slightly used set of Hankook
Z214 C91 compound r-comps in
275/35/ZR18. I bought these back
in late summer 2012 for autocrossing and used them at two events,
for 12 runs total. These tires definitely have a full season of wear
left on them. My last event of the
season before winter though was a
track day and I have decided that
I would like to track instead of
auto-x. The tires performed fantastically and have a lot of grip. I
didn’t get much time with them
though and they were my first set
of R-comps I have ever run on so
I cannot compare them to other
choices. The C91 compound is the
softest that Hankook offers and is
really only for Auto-X. You could
try and use them for tracking I
suppose but according to most,
these will get too hot and not work
as well anymore/lead to reduced
life. Looking to get $600 OBO for
these. Brand new these were about
$950 but these have plenty of life
left in them. Located in Providence, RI. John Gayton (563)
