Bi-Folkal Times 77* NEWS FROM BI-FOLKAL PRODUCTIONS, INC It’s outreach. It’s oral history. It’s a packaged program. It’s a Bi-Folkal kit. Each year we exhibit at the American Library Association meeting in June. This year it was in New Orleans, where the weather wasn’t the only hot topic. Libraries across the country are trying to do more with less. I was excited to hear reports of librarians and volunteers using kits, doing programs and gathering histories. Librarians hearing about Bi-Folkal for the first time asked me about finding funds to purchase a set of kits. I was happy to tell them—and you—that we have produced a list of suggestions for writing grant proposals (including a list of benefits to be gained) and reprinted an article from a librarian in California who purchased a set of kits by gathering a list of donors who each paid $300 for a single kit. Download it here. I was saddened to hear of budget cuts that resulted in too-early retirements of people who were doing great work. But one library’s loss is another’s gain. A fantastic consultant is now available for a library starting a new outreach department or service. If you email me, I’ll tell you all about her. A NON-PROFIT CORPORATION AUTUMN 2011 It’s about time! Time. A lot of it has passed since I last did an issue of Bi-Folkal Times. And a lot has happened since then. That’s what this issue is about. It’s really a news letter with a free programming resource on page 2 (a second is in the pdf linked to the article below) and some special prices on page 3. And now—the news! Start Community Conversations! An exciting program directed by recently “retired” librarian Kathy Mayo is happening in Florida. Community Conversations aims to make a difference in the lives of older adults in Lee County. Teams of volunteers are trained and then each month lead group programs in assisted living facilities, adult daycare programs, and at congregate meal sites. Thanks to the grant funding the project, programmer Tom Edwards and I led a pair of the training sessions in Fort Myers in March. The workshop handout with contact and funding information and two program resources is available here. * Like on Sunset Strip! Remembering Aloud Always allowed! And our sets of large-format photographs with discussion questions on 11 topics are a great way to prompt that remembering. Soon these sets will cost more. They will still be a bargain at $14 for twelve photos, but buy them now and you’ll save $2 per set. See page 3. Like the TV show that ran from 1958 until 1964. Remember Kookie Ed Byrnes? “77 Sunset Strip” is just one of the shows included in the crossword puzzle in the Sixties Actiphile. And the Actiphile is just one piece of the complete Remembering the Sixties kit that we are working on now. Other Actiphile activities include the ever-popular timeline, hit songs, a skit, sentence starts, nametags that feature lapel buttons of the time, and a recipe. I’m working in the Bi-Folkal test kitchen every weekend. Watch for the new kit before the end of the year.
